COMMANDER’S CORNER ~ AL KINSALL
Shipmates – First I
would like to thank
USSVI Groton Base
for re-electing me as
Base Commander. I
only hope I can live
up to your standards
and fulfill your
demands in making
Groton
Base
profitable and the
place for members to feel proud of.
It has been a very full spring with
preparations for the Anniversary
Celebration which took place from 30
April through 2 May 2015. Everyone who
attended had a great time and are looking
forward to next year’s events so they can
come back to where their Submarine
experience all began.
In addition we conducted our Groton Base
HOLLAND Club Induction Ceremony on
6 June 2015 on SUBASE in Dealey Center.
U. S. Congressman Joe Courtney was the
guest speaker surround by over 450 sub
school sailors in the balcony. It was
awesome and the members who were
inducted have something they can talk
about for years to come.
The Annual Appeal is progressing very
nicely.
On behalf of the Executive
Committee I want to thank all who have
donated to the "CLUB SUPPORT FUND."
Without your donation we would not be
able to do what needs to be done to our
building.
That said, we have started clubhouse
electrical repairs. We plan to have all
electrical repairs completed by late fall so
it doesn't interfere with daily operations of
the Base and Club/Bar.
I'm hoping we can also do the masonry
repairs to the foundation that was
identified during the building inspection.
Coming events until the next issue are the,
USSVI National Convention in Pittsburgh
PA, CO/XO/COB dinner we host for all
boats on the River and under construction
at Electric Boat, and of course our
Thanksgiving event at the end of
November.
I am pleased to announce that we have a
new Membership Chairman. He is on
Active Duty, an instructor at the Sub Base.
HIs name is Chris "Remi" Remiesiewicz.
All inquiries regarding membership should
be
addressed
to
him
at
[email protected] or
860.333.0530.
Have a great summer.
I’m always
reachable at 860-460-0027 or by email at

U.S. Submarine Force Losses
... those submarines that never returned and remain ... on Eternal Patrol. For July / Aug / Sept
JULY
USS S-28 (SS-133) was lost on July 4, 1944 with the loss of 49 crew off Oahu, Hawaii while conducting
training operations with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter RELIANCE. The exact cause of the loss
of S-28 cannot be determined. S-28 completed 7 war patrols.
USS RUNNER (SS-275) was declared lost July 20, 1943 with the loss of 78 crew while on her 3rd war
patrol when she was sunk somewhere between Midway Island and Hokkaido, Japan. RUNNER was
probably damaged by a mine in an enemy minefield and sank.
USS ROBALO (SS-273) was lost on July 26, 1944 with the loss of 81 crew while on her 3rd war patrol
when she was sunk probably off the east coast of Balabac Island (Philippines Islands), possibly as a
result of an explosion of her after battery and / or by striking an enemy mine. At least four men survived
her sinking, but died in captivity.
USS RUNNER (SS-275)
AUGUST
USS GRUNION (SS-216) was lost on August 1, 1942 with the loss of 70 crew on her first and final
war patrol when she was sunk near the entrance to Kiska (Alaska) Harbor. The true cause of
GRUNION’s sinking remains a mystery. It is probably that GRUNION was sunk by the deck guns of a
Japanese freighter.
USS BULLHEAD (SS-332) was lost on August 6, 1945 with the loss of 84 crew while on her 3rd war
patrol when she was sunk in West end of Lombok Strait in the Java Sea. BULLHEAD was possibly
lost as a result of being bombed by a Japanese aircraft.
USS S-39 (SS-144)
USS FLIER (SS-250) was lost on August 13, 1944 with the loss of 79 crew while on her 2nd war
patrol. FLIER was sunk in the Balabac Strait near the Mantangule Island; possibly as a result of striking an enemy mine. Eight crewmen
were recused by USS Redfin (SS-272).
USS S-39 (SS-144) was lost on August 14, 1942 while on her 5th war patrol when she was destroyed after grounding on a submerged reef
south of Rossel Island, Louisande Archipelago (Papua New Guinea) All the crew were rescued.
USS HARDER (SS-257) was lost on August 24,1944 with the loss of 79 crew while on her 5th war patrol when she was sunk off Caiman
Point, Luzon, Philippines Islands. HARDER was commanded by Medal of Honor reciepent Commander Sam Dealey when she was sunk
probably as a result of being debth charged. Captain Ed Beach is quoted as remarking that “USS Harder was a peer among peers, a fighter
among fighters, and, above all, a submarine among submarines.”
USS COCHINO (SS-345) was lost on August 26, 1949 when it was sunk in Norwegian Sea after an electrical fire and battery explosion.
All crew were rescused by the USS TUSK (SS-426). One man from COCHINO and 6 men from TUSK were lost in the rescue operation.
SEPTEMBER
USS S-5 (SS-110) was lost on September 1, 1920 when she foundered off Deleware Capes 40 miles
offshore by the accidental intake of water through the Main Induction Value. All the crew escaped
through a hole cut in hull in the tiller room.
USS GRAYLING (SS-209) was lost on September 9, 1943 with the loss of 76 crew while on her 8th
war patrol when she was sunk in or near Tablas Strait, Philippines Islands. The cause of the loss
GRAYLING remain a mystery.
USS POMPANO (SS-181) was lost on September 17, 1943 with the loss of 77 crew while on her
USS S-5 (SS-110)
7th war patrol when she was sunk off the northeast coast of Honshu, Japan. The cause of the loss
POMPANO remain a mystery.
USS S-51 (SS-162) was lost on September 25, 1925 with the loss of 33 crew when she was sunk after a collision with the SS City of Rome
while operating on the surface off Block Island. Three crewmen survived the sinking.
USS CISCO (SS-290) was lost on September 28, 1943 with the loss of 76 crew on her first and final war patrol when she was sunk in the
Sulu Sea, west of Mindinao, in the southwestern area of the Philippines Islands. CISCO probably was sunk by enemy bombing.

Sailor, Rest Your Oar
When you're final dive is made, and your
battery's running low,
You'll know there lies a boat for you many
fathoms here below,
With your annunciators jammed on full and
your depth gauge needles bent,
Your accumulator's dry of oil and your air
banks all are spent,
It's then you get to wonderin', "is my life's
boat rigged for dive?"
Your guessing drill commences, "am I dead
or still alive?"
You pace the flooded decks with scorn

Into realms of Rex you've stepped, and
here you'll make your stand.
To live your life, as sailors must, at the
bottom of the sea,
There's one you'll have to reckon-that one,
my friend, is thee.

Did you lead the kind of life you should in

"There is a port of no return, where
ships may ride at anchor for a little
space.
And then some starless night the

No tangled wreckage will be washed

Of sailormen from Cannes to Singapore.

The choice is up to you, sailor chart your

Chart it straight and true.
Now's the time to flood your tanks and trim

HOUSE COMMITTEE ~ JEFF WALSH
Hello
Shipmates,
I hope this
finds you
and your
family
well. The
last few
months
have been
busy and
we had another successful Anniversary
celebration. We had over 200 guests
attend the various activities and
everyone seemed to enjoy themselves
I would also like to take the opportunity
to thank the Anniversary Committee
members who without them we would
not have another successful year:
Lynn Wynn, Norm Kuzel, Al Kinsall,
Ella Mae Kuzel, Fran Kinsall, John
Perkins, Rich Cheatham, Dee
Carcioppolo, Sharon Foret, John
Carcioppolo and Stan Mathis.
With the conclusion of Anniversary
means it is that time again where we
plan for our THANKSGIVING Caring
and Sharing program. For this program
to be a success, it relies on the
tremendous generosity of our many
sponsors and members with the various
donations that we receive.
Last year we served nearly 1200 meals
and it was a great success. For meeting
dates please check the Events section in
our newsletter and our website for more
information.
We have several events planned for this
quarter.
July 25th – 1st Annual Veterans and
Family Picnic at Groton Elks.
August 15th – Clam Boil $15. Clams/
Mussels, Corn on the Cob, Potatoes,
Sausage
September 19th – SUBVETS Pig
Roast $15 Our Brunches have been a huge success
this year, but we can still use help. Some
of our regular crews have asked for a
much needed break. So we are looking
for crews to assist during our brunches.
We have openings for:
1st Sunday – Steak and Eggs
4th Sunday – Normal Brunch. This
brunch is normally reserved for those
looking to raise money.
Please contact the club if you are
interested in volunteering.
The calendar of events is posted on the
website, however if there are any events
you would like to see, please contact me
so we can discuss how to best utilize it
to make it a success. My email is
[email protected] my cell
phone number (860) 449-2103.

They enjoy the benefits of being a part
of the First and Finest and provide a
great deal of support to us here at
Groton Base. They have the added
advantage of getting together as
Shipmates for good times and
The group as a whole are great
supporters of USSVI Groton Base.
They are big supporters of the Kaps for

NOTES FROM THE PERMITTEE ~ SHARON FORET
Hello, Members:
Please welcome our
newest bartender,
Jake. Jake is former
Navy and very
experienced pouring
the suds and
keeping customers
happy. He’s already
building a following here at the clubhouse.
He’s hosting game nights and Sunday
brunches so far. He makes a fine addition
to a wonderful team working here.
We’d love to expand the evening grill-open
days, but can only do so with your
continued support. Let us know what you
like, or what you’d like to see us cook, and
we’ll do our best to make new ideas
happen!
Also welcome Ray, our evening cook. Ray
has been VOLUNTEERING his time for a
couple months as our lunch cook. He’s
been bringing some great ideas to the menu
while he’s been training and learning skills
for his future. Together, we’ve opened two
nights a week: Wednesdays, and Fridays:
when Ray is cooking specialty HappyTizers and dinners. The evening menu
changes as we get new ideas. The evening
menus offer such things as: a slider triothe trio varies: burger, pulled pork,
chicken, shrimp. We also have a small
fryer to make French fries, onion rings,
fried pickles, and lots of amazingly tasty
treats.
As always, the back dining room (Pump
Room holds 64) and upstairs hall (Topsidemax capacity 180) are available to rent for
parties and events such as pinnings,
retirements, re-enlistments, Wives halfway
nights, and reunions. Topside rental is only
$100, and Pump room is just $35. There is
an $80 cleaning deposit to hold either room
for the date you want, and you’ll get it back
if you clean it to standard. Just call and
talk with Tom or Sharon to pencil in the
date for your event.
We’re looking for members who are
interested in starting a dart league at the
club. If you know how to play and would
be interested in leading the group, we’d
love to have you. Talk to Tom or Sharon
and we’ll get it all together.
We also open the back dining room, at no
charge, for lunch meetings for groups. All
we ask is that you establish a recurring date
and we will be prepared for your large or
small group when you arrive.
Just a reminder that chili is available for
purchase as takeout- just for dinner, for
parties, and even for deployments in
gunboat size (approx. 6 gallons). Call
ahead and Tom will make the secret
SubVets recipe for your event.
We are approaching football season- and
just like last year, we do have Sunday,
Monday, and Thursday night football on
our TVs.
(The house committee is
preparing to hang our newly donated 70”
screen!)
There will be drink and food specials
including our traditional Sunday Game
day- Game day where we have different
game meats cooked between the two
football games on Sundays. We invite all
our hunting members to participate and
donate some of their dear, bear, fish, rabbit,
etc. Come on down and show the staff
how to cook your special dish with your
special catch, while we enjoy some slightly
rowdy camaraderie and football!
See you at the Clubhouse.

CHAPLAIN’S OFFERINGS ~ JACK GALLIMORE, BASE CHAPLAIN
We are quickly
getting near the
halfway point in
2015.
Has been
quite a year.
First...Thank you
again for the support
of the Honor Detail.
As usual, when
asked to be there,
you were.
When we are not able to directly attend, we
send a letter of condolence and an Eternal
Patrol certificate to the survivor.
An additional effort we perform is
recognition of the boats returning from an
extended operation. The RED HATS are
there to provide a 7 gun cannon salute. So
far we have not received any return fire.
That is a good thing.
As in past years, the Chaplain provides
Invocations and Benedictions or prayers at
many functions at numerous and various
ceremonies in the area.
Each week members who are either on the
Binnacle list, Sunshine list, or the Rest and
Recovery list are mentioned in the
Commander's notes. They welcome calls
and visits.

SUBSCHOOL GRADUATIONS ~ JACK GALLIMORE
At every BESS, SOAC, and SOBC Naval
Submarine School graduation, a
SUBVETS Groton Base representative is
present to participate in the Tolling of the
Boats, or what is sometimes called the
“Two Bell” ceremony. This event is
conducted so that the students and future
submariners, including the family members

At each BESS graduation, the SUBVETS

I wish to give my personal thanks to our

SUBMARINE QUALIFICATION RECOGNITION PROGRAM
We would like the opportunity to recognize your
sailors with our SQRP, but to do so we need
your support and involvement.
On meeting night (first Monday of every month
except when it falls on a holiday), the crew
members show up before the meeting starts at
1830. Usually the COB, CO, other crew
members and family accompany them. We
conduct the SQRP at the very start of the
meeting. The CO and COB say a few words if
desired.
We need you or one of your Chief Petty Officers
to tell us that you would like to recognize crew
members who recently Qualified in Submarines
at an upcoming meeting. We need a list of the
individuals including their full names and rates/
ranks at least one week prior to the meeting that
we will be recognizing your sailors so that way
we can prepare a certificate for them.
We all sound off our names and boat and year
that we qualified. When the sailors hear some of
the Qualification years it really hits them. We
are usually done by 1900 so all can depart, or
proceed downstairs to enjoy our facilities.
Anyone can stay for rest of the meeting. Boats
just returning from deployments are the ideal
candidates - with numerous crew members who

received their dolphins for us to recognize. We
look forward to recognizing your sailors.
If you are in port when our meetings are
scheduled give the Base Commander a call and
allow us to recognize your sailors.
If you are not the CO, or COB reading this,
please show them a copy or bring it to their
attention so that we can recognize your
shipmates for their efforts and welcome them as

USSVI SILENT SERVICE LICENSE PLATES ~ HARRISON SOLT III
Thank you to all
who responded to
the request to
contact elected
official and the
Connecticut
DMV regarding
the creation of a
CT Silent Service
motorcycle
license plate. In
spite of all your efforts and support a
motorcycle plate is not to be.
The new Commissioner and his staff did revisit
our request concluding once again that it was
not cost effective to create a motorcycle special
interest plate. The decision was based on the
following:
~ There are about 200 special interest license
plates, but no special interest motorcycle plates.
Creating a motorcycle plate for us will open the
door for others to request a motorcycle plate for
their organization.
~ The materials for the plates are very costly
and have a shelf life. The per unit cost becomes
very high In the case of low demand, projected
or actual.
~ Our population and demand is small. The
Long Island Plate number in excess of 50,000
plates, the new Red Sox’s plate [first issued in
mid-2014] is already over 25,000. We in
comparison are just over 700 plates.
~ When the CT Silent Service vehicle plate was
created the criteria was a minimum of 200
committed requests to create the plate. Now the
criteria is a minimum of 400 requests. This
precludes us from forcing the issue through
requests.
The Commissioner appreciates and supports the
Veteran and their organizations. They took great
pains to explain that fact as they explained their
decision.
Again, thank one and all for your efforts and
support. A SS motorcycle plate just wasn’t to
be.
The above all aside, there is still the vehicle SS
license plate. If you don’t have one you need
one. If you have one it is time for a second one.
Just a reminder that if a Member has more than
one class of vehicle registered in Connecticut
one can have the same plate marker designation
on each vehicle.
The Connecticut vehicle classes are passenger,
commercial, combination, camp trailer, and
camper. If you have more than one class of
vehicle registered in Connecticut you could
have the same vanity plate markings with the
Silent Service special interest background on
each vehicle.
The prohibition is having the same marker
designation on more than one vehicle of the
same class. I.E. Two passenger class vehicles
with the same marker is prohibited.
Thanks for your continued support, your service
to our great country and all that you do.
CLUBHOUSE CLEANUP
Our club gets cleaned thanks to our shipmates
on the Saturday Morning Cleanup Crew who
continually donate time every weekend to clean
our clubhouse and keep it looking good for our
members and guests.
The club belongs to the membership, but
cleanup of the club is done by only a small
handful of hard-working, dedicated volunteers.
handful of hard-working, dedicated volunteers.
We can always use more volunteers on a regular
basis to clean. You don’t have to be there every
Saturday, just when you can.
Cleanup starts around 7am and is usually
completed by 10am for our 11am opening.
The clubhouse belongs to the membership, and
at Groton Base we are very fortunate in that we
are the only USSVI Base with its own
clubhouse, even 51 years after the organization
was formed. That is special.
Please pitch in to keep your club clean. If the
membership does not clean the clubhouse, it
does not get cleaned.

KAP(SS) 4 Kid(SS) ~ John Riley
"No one stands so tall as when they stoop to help a child"
U S S V I G ro t o n
Base’s Kap(SS) 4
K i d ( S S ) Te a m
continues to bring
comfort and joy to
sick children and
their families.
Emails from the moms of two Kids we
visited:
“Thank you so much for visiting Jake at
CCMC. Your visit was the most positive
experience during his stay there. We will
be sure to make a special trip to the
museum this summer. Thanks again. Anna
“My 11 year old daughter is going through
Chemo at Smilow at Yale New Haven
Hospital. I just wanted to thank you for all
your support. She loved seeing the
veterans and she especially loved the cap!!
Thank you, Liz
Our first 2015 Kap(SS)4Kid(SS) visit was to
Bridgeport Hospital’s Child Psychiatric
Program on March 31st, where we made 6 pre-
teen Children Honorary Submariners.
In addition to the K4K ball caps, certificates,
wristbands, tattoos and Sub photos, we also
gave them Special Pillows with uplifting
messages sewn inside. They were made for our
K4K Program by Kids from Collegiate Middle
School in Richmond Virginia.
The hospital staff told us that the pillows were a
perfect added gift for the emotional problems
the Children were dealing with. Sub Vets Paul
Grammer, Ron Grabowski and John & Jackie
Riley, visited the Kids in their Activity Room.
On April 15th, 12 teenagers in Yale-Saint
Raphael Hospital's In-Patient Child Psychiatric
Program became Honorary Submariners!
As usual, our Honorary Submariner gifts were a
big hit with the Kids. They were also excited to
receive the Special Pillows, with uplifting
messages sewn inside, and Teddy Bears
provided by K4K Team member Ron
Grabowski. It was another very memorable
visit for our Team which consisted of Paul
Grammer, Charlie Murray, and John and
Jackie Riley.
Abraham Lincoln
were rewarded with joyful thanks from the
Children and their families and we thanked the
Kids for the opportunity to include them in our
Submariner Family.
Our Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team included Norm
and Ella Mae Kuzel, Paul Grammer, Ron
Grabowski, Mike DeLeo and John and Jackie
Riley.
34 Children at Connecticut Children’s Medical
Center (CCMC), in Hartford, became Honorary
Submariners on Thursday, May 14th!
The responses of the Kids again warmed our
hearts. Many of the parents shared that they
really appreciated our visiting their Children
and several noted that it was the first time they
saw their Child smile since they entered the
hospital!
We also visited Submarine Veteran, and Holland
Club member, Terry Pendergast, who was a
patient at the hospital. Paul and Ron served on
boats that Terry served on also which started the
lengthy telling of Sea Stories all around! We
had a great time with Terry and wished him a
speedy recovery.
Active Duty Submariners Daniel Messier and
Russell Frazier, stationed at the Nautilus
Submarine Museum, joined the Groton Base
Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team of Norm and Ella
Mae Kuzel, Paul Dillon, Charlie Murray, and
John and Jackie Riley for the visit.
Dan and Russell were big hits with the Kids
and are now officially Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team
members (they also visited CCMC with us in
December). As in December, Kids were excited
to learn that they would be given Special Tours,
and Nautilus Submarine Challenge Coins, by
Active Duty Submariners if they wore their
“Honorary Submariner” Cap or Doo Rag to the
Nautilus Museum.
Our Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Team thanks Jeff
Walsh, Sharon Foret, the Naval Submarine
School Chief Petty Officers Association, and
the Naval Submarine School First Class Petty
Officers Association, who put on the Kap(SS) 4
Kid(SS) Fundraiser Brunches.
They also donate their tips to the program!
These brunches are held the third Sunday of
each month at the clubhouse.
We thank everyone who supports the brunches
or separately donates to the program. These
funds help us bring comfort and joy to more
Children!

On May 27th, we were fortunate to be able to
spend lots of time with each of the 13 Children
we made Honorary Submariners at Smilow
Cancer Hospital and Yale New Haven
Children’s Hospital.
