Smallmouth Fishing

As I noted in my last article, when the
striped bass catch and release season closed,
I was heading to the Susquehanna River for
smallmouth bass fishing. The area I concentrate
on is above the Conowingo Dam a few miles
below the Holtwood Dam. Directions to the PA
Muddy Run boat ramp are on my website if any
of you readers are interested.
This area is what I will call “smallmouth
heaven” during the spring spawn. The rock
formations are a result of volcanic activity well
before our time on this planet. A brisk current
is present due to the power company raising
and lowering the water level in order to generate
electricity. The rocks provide current breaks and
this is where the smallies will be. All my first
time customers are marveled at the unique rock
formations and natural beauty of the area. I had
15 guided trips there in the last 3 weeks. Most
days ended with a catch of 20-30 smallies with
bigger fish being in the 3-4 lb. (18”-20”) range.
During the spawn, these fish will make beds
in protected areas where current will not wash
away the eggs. Casting a tube, senko or small
finesse worm in these areas and bouncing it back
off the bottom is the primary pattern. Casting
accuracy, a controlled line and watching the line,
will enhance the catch. My color preference is
green pumpkin but that is secondary to hitting
the smallies on their nose. A strong hook set is
then needed to finalize the catch. Watching these
smallies do a tail dance on the retrieve to the boat
is a sight to see and why fisherman love smallie
fishing.
A word of caution is in order relative to
running a boat in the area. It could be dangerous
resulting in serious injury to the individuals as
well as the boat. Channels are not clearly marked
and water levels could fluctuate 2-3 feet in a day
which means the rocks can grow. If you plan
to fish this area, try to take a friend who has
experience on the water or hire a guide for the
first trip. It would also be wise to wear a life vest at
ALL TIMES. I use the auto inflatable vests which
are not bulky but effective.
I had a repeat customer from the past two
years book me for 3 smallie trips in January for
this spring. After the second trip he asked if I
had any openings because he wanted to schedule

a fourth trip. I was able to get him his fourth
trip. This angler had a severe case of SMALLIE
FEVER. All types of fishing fever are addictive
and not conducive to working. I have had
the fever as well as a number of associates over
the years. It is also likely to result in dreams of
catching the big one. A healthy disease.
Striped bass season reopened on May 16th
and lasts until December 15th. Prior to June 1st,
1 stripper between 18”-26” can be kept. After
June 1st, two striped bass per person per day
between 18”-28” or one between 18”-28” and
one over 28” inclusive.
Largemouth bass fishing in the Upper Bay
is ON. I understand a 10 lb. 4 oz. largemouth
was caught about a month ago and released
alive. The Flats are becoming a major East Coast
fishery. The number of bass boats running every
weekend is staggering but what a boom to the
local business community.

I understand shad fishing was poor at best
this year due to low water flow. I have heard white
perch fishing has been good. And as always, the
Upper Bay remains loaded with river chickens
(catfish). Hope all you anglers get a chance to
go out and enjoy the fishing we have here in the
Upper Bay.

The Third Annual Big Tomato Contest will be held on August 11, 2012 and we are
expecting bigger crowds, and hopefully bigger tomatoes! Last year’s contest was a lot of
fun and we even pulled contestants from other states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey and
Virginia.
Mike Mansfield from New Jersey took first place with a 4 lb 6.6 oz monster and was
fortunate enough to land a 3 lb 8.5 oz second place tomato – both of which were the Big
Zac variety. Bernie Cordivano, lll, from the Buck, took third place with a 3 lb 5.6 oz beauty.
The “Just For Fun” competition was won by a genuine character from Norwood, Pa.,
Steve Kline, who also entertained us with his washboard abilities joining in with Box Turtle
Bob and Ed Belote, III on guitar.
Cecil Soil’s Big Tomato Contest is, actually, “just for fun”, and the real goal is raise
money for the Special Olympics of Maryland, which is, in my opinion, the most deserving
of charities. Again, I will be asking the business community to help sponsor this
worthwhile event, and again we will reward them with free advertising and name
recognition. Last year we presented Special Olympics Maryland with a check for $1500 and
with your help we will surpass that.
We modified the contest rules somewhat to make it more equitable for all contestants.
The biggest change is we are giving out one cash prize, that is $500. This will allow a
greater amount of the overall proceeds to directly benefit Special Olympics. We will not
have second and third place cash prices, but will award ribbons, etc. and of course publish
photos of the contestants.

• Participation in the contest is open to both Maryland residents and non-residents.
• To be eligible for the case prize, entry tomato must have been grown personally
by the registrant, and not have been used in any previous tomato contest. Rule

• Tomatoes may be green, white, pink, orange or red, but they should be large!
• One entry tomato per individual.
• Registration deadline is August 6, 2012. Entry forms are available on the contest
web site (www.bigtomatocontest.com) and in issues of Better Bargains
Advertiser and Cecil Soil Magazine.
• Registration fee for the cash prize contest is $10 per entry. There is no entry fee
for the “Just for Fun” division, but participants must be registered.
• Registration in the contest grants permission for entrant’s name and likeness to
be used in contest-related materials, including the contest web site, without
further compensation.
• Official 2012 contest t-shirts should be ordered at the time of registration.
Limited additional quantities will be available for purchase on the day of the
contest.
• We also have a limited supply of 2011 t-shirts for sale at only $6 each. Please
include your size on your entry form.

MD 21911.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 11th at 1149 Telegraph Road,
in the parking lot of Horse Unlimited Tack Shop. Last minute registration will
begin 1:00 PM, with the official weigh-in scheduled for 3:00 PM. There will be a
separate “Just for Fun” weigh-in at the end of the day for youth under 12 years old
and anyone else who does not wish to compete for the cash prizes. Ribbons will be

Where to get Giant Tomato Plants
You can go through your seed catalogs and find lot of tomato varieties that are truly giants and can grow to
awesome proportions, but two proven varieties are Big Zac and Delicious. So while others may give huge
fruit, we think these two varieties are your best chance, and are available locally from these trusted sources:
