of the Pughs News
Well it’s been a busy quarter
since we last did the Pughs News.
Congratulations to our very lovely
Marketing Co-ordinator Ceri
Jones, who has given birth to a
little boy, Max. Whilst Ceri is on
maternity leave we have Jo Harris
covering all our marketing and
after a few sleepless nights has
put together this Summer edition
of Pughs News.
Some of you may know that
our Service Manager at the
Churchstoke depot Marc Gould
left us at the end of February. He
has moved back to his original
home of the Midlands. We are
currently going through the
recruitment process and hope
to post news of an appointment
very soon.
Many of our engineers at both
Churchstoke & Holmes Chapel
have attended training over the
last few months keeping their
skills up to date. We have several
air-con trained engineers now.
Make sure you get your air-con
sorted before the weather starts
hotting up!
Talking of weather.....In the few
patches of sun that we’ve had, we
managed to have a bit of a spring
clean in the yard and have dug
out some old ex display bargains,
so make sure you take a look.
We have also got some cracking
deals on our used ex-hire Fendts.
If you have always fancied being

More than 1,000 farmers
descended on London to urge
the Government to do more to
help Britain’s struggling farmers
at the Farmers for Action March
on 23rd of March. Our Sales
representative Chris Gateley was
down in Westminster showing
his support. Chris said “It was
good to see farmer’s coming
together to hopefully try to make
a change, with the difficult and
tough times ahead”

“Tractors and taffeta”
We are very passionate about the
agricultural industry and our core
business has always been and still
remains in Agriculture. We have
been supplying machinery to our
farming customers for over 35
years and in that time seen many
changes, good, bad and ugly.
Many of our farming customers have diversified over the
years, whether it be holiday lets,
Christmas tree harvesting or quad
trekking.
We have over the last 6 months
been working on our own diversification project!
In September 2015
RVW Pugh Ltd
purchased Garthmyl Hall (with a
helping hand from
Barclays bank
in the form of a
business loan!)
Garthmyl Hall is an
11 bedroom grade
II listed Georgian Manor house, 8
miles from the Churchstoke depot.
The hall and gardens had been a
little unloved in recent years, so
the last 6 months have been a major refurbishment project. Robert
and Caroline Pughs youngest
daughter Julia, has worked
as a wedding co-ordinator at
a local venue for 5 years and
loves all things wedding.
So this seemed like the perfect
opportunity to add another string
to the family business bow.
As we go to print Julia and her
team are getting the final preparations in place for the official
launch 23-24thApril. With wedding bookings & shooting parties
already in the diary for 2016 and
2017, we are very excited to offer
the Hall as an exclusive wedding
venue and private hire venue from
mid June this year.

Holloway talks to us about his
NEW Grass Rejuvenator....
Mike has been a loyal customer at
R V W Pugh since the early 80s
with one of his first purchases
being a Lamborghini tractor.
Over the years he has bought most
of his farm machinery from R V W
Pugh which includes several OPICO
machines. It’s been some ten years
since he bought his HE-VA front
press from OPICO Territory Manager Nick Rider supplied through R
V W Pugh.
Mike also has an OPICO Grain dryer
on the farm to add to his machinery collection. Nick confirmed it
was when Mike went to the Royal
Welsh show in 2015 and walked
Mike said. “The Royal Welsh Show
was a fantastic ‘Shop Window’
for upcoming products and demonstrations, and I look forward to
seeing RVW Pugh at this year’s
show in July”

developed by OPICO in conjunction with HE-VA in Denmark and

of tines and extremely
aggressive star rings
ensuring a good tilth for
seed. To establish this it
is the perfect bit of machinery for over seeding
or doing a full reseed.

Local Farmer Ben Beddoes
explains how his Pottinger
assists his day to day farming
needs
Local farmer Ben Beddoes is located approximately 2 miles from the
Churchstoke depot. A long standing
Pottinger customer Ben is looking
to produce the right quality of milk
with a strong emphasis on forage
quality for the farm’s “Dairy Dreams”
ice cream business. Currently milking
around 200 cows, Ben changed from a
Pottinger Mex 6 trailed forage harvester to a new Pottinger Europrofi 4500L
wagon back in 2008
“One of the most immediate
benefits we saw was the big
reduction in labour”, comments Ben,
“utilising just one person rather than 3
or even 4 that we needed for the
forage harvester”

especially load capacity and ease of
driving. This is thanks to the new lowered floor design which is ramped down
towards the loading rotor aiding load
compression within the wagon body.
Ben also noticed far fewer DA’s
(twisted stomachs) in the herd. It
was common to have 5 or 6 every
year with the shorter precision
chop system, but now one every
couple of years is the norm with
the wagon forage.
“But what really got our attention was
the speed that we could clear the field.
Initially I thought the time we spent
away from the field would seriously
affect the Pottinger wagon’s output.
But thanks to its impressive loading
efficiency it was actually far quicker
than our trailed forage harvester and
three trailers!”
Towards the end of 2014 Ben started
to consider changing the Europrofi
4500L for the latest Europrofi Combiline wagon. “The strong residual
value of my second hand Europrofi
4500L and the increased performance
of the new model made it a straight
forward decision. Pottinger are way
ahead of the rest of the market. In my
opinion there wasn’t any point in looking at a different brand.”
After several conversations with
Barry Humphreys, Territory Manager
from Pottinger UK at local shows and
events, Ben came to the conclusion

that the new Europrofi 5510L Combiline
would fit the bill to harvest around the
500 acres total across 4 cuts. Having
in recent times acquired some land further away from the farm the extra capacity of the new larger model would
help on these 16 mile round trips. To
harvest this grass with a self-propelled
forage harvester would probably not
be viable at this distance.
The shorter 39mm chop length offered
by the new model over the previous
models 45 mm chop also impressed.
Ben believes this will only aid consolidation in the clamp further, which he
acknowledges as the key to good silage
making.
The deal was done with RVW Pugh Ltd
and a new Pottinger 5510L Europrofi Combiline arrived early in 2015. As
expected the performance of the new
model did not disappoint,

The new Europrofi Combiline machine
was further utilised for zero grazing last year combined with a front
mounted mower.
Thanks to the extra capacity of the new
wagon Ben has found that traffic levels
are now much lower. Fewer trips are a
major benefit with the farm situated on
the side of the busy main Churchstoke
to Newtown road, thus helping reduce
risk and increase safety for the operator
and farm.
So how would Ben sum up using his
new Pottinger Europrofi 5510L
Combiline wagon?

quality forage its helps us produce,
is proving to be a key factor in the
success of our business”

silage efficiency
Dairy farmers R J Langford and
Partners from Tattenhall near
Chester hope to improve their
silaging efficiency and quality with
the purchase of two new Pottinger
Torro 6510 Combiline forage
wagons from the Holmes Chapel
depot.
Having previously used and experienced a Pottinger Mex 6 forager
for the last few years themselves,
the Langford’s were aware of the
excellent quality of the Austrian
manufactured equipment and had
no hesitation in purchasing again.

In addition to an increase in silage
quality, the ability to pick-up
silage with just two drivers was
appealing as good staff at silaging time is always challenging to
find. The wagon driver’s could
also push the silage up themselves if an extra man wasn’t
available to sit on the clamp.
The two high capacity wagons
on 710/45R22.5 Vredestein’s will
comfortably handle the three
cuts of silage in place of the trailed
forager. The two 6510 Combiline
wagons offer a capacity of 65m3
and were ordered with the Twin
Blade reversible knife system to
provide double the service life.

the weight and provide easier

new 24 x 24 gearbox for
their larger compact tractors that incorporates 8
powershift speeds.
Ideal for those that don’t want
Hydrostatic transmission, the new

A Challenging shoot!!
Some of our lucky Challenger customers were treated to a morning
of clay pigeon shooting at the West
Midland Shooting Ground on 17th
February 2016. Nothing like a bit of
good old fashioned competition to
get you set for the day!
Congratulations to Matt for coming
first and Sammy and Martin for
coming joint second in the individual
shoot. And to Chris, Sammy, Mike
and Scott for all winning the flush.
Despite the rather dubious weather,
a great time was had by all!!!
“Spray Away” Day...
The first national Self-Propelled
Demo day was a great success!
Running from 10am - 4pm, the
day saw 13 different sprayers
gathered together at Bramcote
Hall Farm in Staffordshire.
With three fields, and 300 acres
of cover crop to run in, there was
ample room for all those booms
to be out and about in one place.
With the crop tramlined and with
safety in mind, there were just a
couple of machines constantly in
action per field at the same time.
The bonus of rolling topography
provided the perfect opportunity
for visitors to try out the performance of the Challenger RoGator
655D for themselves!With both
Challenger and RVW Pugh in
attendance, the day - improved
further by some glorious sunshine,
was a great success and was the
perfect opportunity to drive and
compare the best with the rest!

Importance of After Sales Support...

Belcher Farms has been a family
run business since the turn of
the Century in 1920, when back
in the day they started farming
with shire horses. With a great
transition in the 60’s seeing the
business expand from 500 to
1500 acres. Partly owned between
brother’s over the years, 2015 saw
the biggest development as Robert and Richard took on the farm
as a father and son partnership. In

Agriculture is traditionally an
industry with ‘under-braked’
trailed equipment.
Modern farmers demand more
productivity from their existing
trailers and traditional specification running gear cannot cope
with this increased demand.
This in turn can overload the
braking system of the tow tractor
causing premature wear or total
brake failure which other than

material defect or defective workmanship would void any manufacturers warranty.
In the event of a tractor brake
failure, most manufacturers will
now ask for a written report into
the condition of the brakes on a
customers trailed equipment.
Farm tractors and trailed equipment are no longer lost in the
‘grey areas’ of road traffic law.
Today, DVSA inspectors and traffic
Police have extensive knowledge
of current laws covering agricultural equipment on the highway
and will enforce as necessary!!
