Thanks be ‘t ye, Matey! SYHS Parent 2 Parent Newsletter—November 2015 M e s s a g e f rom P r i n c i p a l S wa n i tz Inside this issue: Message from the Principal 1-2 New Speed Limit 2 Teen Driving Class 3 Music Dinner 4 College Info 5-6 ASB Food, Toy Drives, Events 8-9 Principal Coffee 10 PTSA 10 Youth Coalition 11 Pirate Cove 12 Tutoring Info 13-14 Music Dept 15 Pirate Store 15 Theater Dept 16-17 Sports 18-20 Hotline # 21 Yearbook 22-24 Misc Info 25-28 Dates/Calendar 29-36 Misc Flyers, Maps, Discounts, info 37-60 It hardly seems possible that it is already November and that the first quarter of the school year is behind us. Even more remarkable is the tenacity with which summer-like weather held on through October. It was refreshing to get a wintery rain storm to kick off the month of November. I know that we are all hoping for a very wet, much needed El Niño winter. Our dedicated maintenance crew has already begun making preparations by securing sandbags and back-up generators to ensure that our students and facilities will be safe and well cared for through the anticipated barrage of winter storms. With all that said, the arrival of colder weather is not slowing down activities here at school. If you are the parent of a senior, the month of November can be a particularly trying time at home with college applications, essays, letters of recommendation, filing fees, and many scholarship and financial aid applications typically coming due by the end of this month. Please help your son or daughter stay organized during what can be a very hectic and stressful time. It is important that seniors ask teachers and counselors for letters of recommendation early as our staff members are sure to be inundated with such requests in the coming weeks. Faculty members take great pride in writing meaningful, personal letters for our students. It takes time for them to do this, and they appreciate those students who are thoughtful enough to ask early. Academically, being organized allows students to stay focused on school and to keep up those grades which colleges will ultimately use to determine acceptance. Not procrastinating also means that students will still have the opportunity to enjoy a restful Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family. While we’re on the subject of Thanksgiving, there will be no school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, November 25, 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving break. Please also remember that there will be no school on Wednesday, November 11 in observance of Veteran’s Day. While you are enjoying a day off, please remember to take a moment to honor our nation’s soldiers for keeping us safe and defending our freedom. SYHS students can be seen volunteering and performing at a many of the Valley’s Veteran’s Day celebrations. Coming up this week, on Thursday, November 5, SYVUHS will host the powerful Impact Teen Drivers assembly for all students. Impact Teen Drivers is a non-profit conceived by Jon Hamm, CEO for the California Association of Highway Patrolmen in response to the high frequency of crashes involving teens to which CHP officers respond. It was organized for the purpose of providing awareness and education to teenagers, their parents, and community members about all facets of responsible driving, with the goal of reducing the number of injuries and deaths suffered by teens as a result of 1 distracted driving and poor decision making. Their school assembly program is highly regarded and is being sponsored by our local CHP substation. The first semester ends on December 18 this year--before the start of Christmas break. Semester finals will be administered on Wednesday through Friday, December 16 through 18. Having semester finals before the vacation allows students to have better retention and to perform better on their exams than they do when the tests had traditionally been administered in January up until a few years ago. For this benefit to be effective, however, it is important that students are present to take their finals. Please arrange your holiday travel plans to avoid students missing any school in December. I should also mention that PTSA will be hosting their bi-annual Food for Finals event on December 16, handing out free snacks to help encourage students to do well. This would be a great opportunity for you to pitch in and volunteer to see what our amazing PTSA is all about. Email [email protected] for more information. Though November will keep all of us, especially seniors, very busy, it is my sincerest wish as we enter this holiday season that all of our Pirate families are happy and healthy and that we all find the time to slow down and be thankful for the many gifts we have been given. Mark Swanitz Principal Class of ’85 Attention, the speed limit on 246 between Janin Way and Edison has changed to 45 miles per hour from 55 miles per hour. The speed limit is 25 miles per hour when students are present. Look for the new speed limit signs. The CHP will be stepping up the enforcement of the new lower speed limit. Please drive safely. A friendly reminder to please use the crosswalk, DO NOT run across HWY 246. Citations will be issued if caught 2 Openings Available for Start Smart Class DRVING CLASS for TEENS at the Buellton CHP The Buellton office of the California Highway Patrol has announced there are openings available for the next Start Smart classes scheduled for: Tuesday, November 3, 2015, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Anyone who is interested in enrolling their sons or daughters (15-20 years) for this free one time two hour class can make reservations by calling the Buellton CHP area office at 688-5551. The deadline to submit is November 30. The University of California (UC) application continues to be open. Students cannot submit the application until November 1. The deadline to submit is November 30. Students are strongly encouraged to have their applications reviewed by their counselor before submitting. Students applying to college, along with families, are strongly encouraged to submit the FAFSA beginning January 1. There is no longer a PIN for the FAFSA. Instead, parents and students will each create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). For those that wish to do so, that can be done prior to the January 1 date when the FAFSA will first be open. Students applying to private colleges are also encouraged to check the PROFILE to see if the colleges they’re applying to are requesting more information for financial aid (in addition to the FAFSA). Students that will be needing letters of recommendation for college applications or scholarships are reminded to work directly with the individuals they are asking. Located near the New Gym and the Library, the unit features a digital counter which tracks the number of disposable plastic bottles saved from our landfills by encouraging the use of reusable, refillable water bottles. The SYVUHS Associated Student Body (ASB) will be selling Pirate water bottles to help defray the cost of the unit. It is hoped that more stations can be installed in the future. For information about purchasing a Pirate water bottle, contact Greg Wolf [email protected] If you are interested in making a donation towards the installation of future bottle-filling stations on campus, contact Mark Swanitz. 42 SYHS is looking for students to compete in National Youth Cyber Defense Competition CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association to inspire high school and middle school students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. The program features an annual online and in-person competition, in which teams across the United States and Canada, as well as from Department of Defense Dependent Schools abroad compete in a series of online rounds for a chance to earn an all-expenses-paid trip to the CyberPatriot National Finals Competition in Baltimore, MD in the spring. There students have the opportunity to win scholarships and network with industry leaders. Participation on our team is open to all SYHS students. Anyone interested should contact Mr. Peterschick, the team coach, in EP3 or via email: [email protected] or phone 644-6487, ext 3398. A commitment to the team is necessary and consists of meetings on a biweekly basis, learning new concepts and skills, and competing in 6 hour long competition dates, at least 3 times during the school year. Students will learn the basics, and much more, about computer workstation and server security on both the Windows and Linux operating systems. The competitors also learn about Cisco router and switch configuration, Computer Forensics, and how to use virtual machines. Network, Application, and System security are also touched upon for Mobile Devices. CyberPatriot builds teamwork and leadership skills in all competitors and functions best when a strong student leader rises to captain the teams that form. Teams consist of up to six players and our school can have multiple teams. We are also always on the lookout for mentors to help train the students. Anyone with skills in any of the areas mentioned above is welcomed to contact Mr. Peterschick as well. We are building this year’s team . Interested students contact Mr. Peterschick, the team coach, in EP3 or via email: [email protected] or phone 644-6487, ext 3398. 43 44 45 46 47 PTA / PTSA BENEFITS Save Money with Member Benefits Providers Whether you're buying school supplies for the kids or renting a car for your next family vacation, PTA members can save money on everyday purchases thanks to National PTA's Member Benefits Provider Program. ** National PTA teams up with businesses committed to supporting PTA’s mission of serving all children by offering our members special discounts, fundraising opportunities and other unique deals. · AARP · Hertz · MetLife · Schwan's Cares · Staples · Sylvan ·TeenSafeNew! https://www.pta.org/benefits TeenSafe With the TeenSafe smartphone monitoring service, parents are given a window into their children’s digital lives, with the goal of creating an open, positive dialogue between parents and their kids. Greetings, I would like to extend a warm welcome from the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School food service department. Our department prepares a daily breakfast and lunch menu from scratch, which can be purchased in the cafeteria and quad. Our food service program and restaurant occupations program is unique, as we work side by side with students to teach them all aspects of the food service industry. These students are required to have jobs in the food service industry and rotate through the facility working with each staff member for 6 weeks. The food service staff includes Denise Johnson, Adriana Ruelas and Chuck Willis. Jimmy Palacios, the restaurant occupations teacher, directly oversees safety and sanitation training, preparation and catering, as well as works with the student to ensure they are learning the proper techniques. They work along-side the students to teach them to make French toast, pancakes, bagel and English muffin sandwiches, breakfast burritos, waffles, biscuits and omelettes. In addition, the students make assorted sandwiches, salads, pasta salads, lunch burritos, hamburgers, spaghetti, assorted pizzas and the daily special. Most of our bread products are made by Edna’s Bakery, which are delivered fresh daily. In some of our bakery products, we have introduced ultra-grain whole wheat products, which provides additional nutrition. Each day we offer a lunch special which encourages our students to taste and try new healthier menu options and use different cooking methods. These recipes are developed by the staff and students to meet the new nutritional requirements, giving students the opportunity to create recipes from scratch and display and market new menu items. National School Breakfast and Lunch Program Santa Ynez High School food service program complies with all regulations of the National School Lunch Program. This program provides free or reduced price meals for those students who qualify. Our school follows a food-based menu-planning program, which requires specific food components to be offered at breakfast and lunch to provide daily nutritional requirements. The food components are a meat or meat alternative, fruit, vegetable, grain or bread, and fluid milk. Using these components as our guide, five items are offered daily and a student would need to take at least three items to make a breakfast and lunch. Students are required to take a fruit or vegetable as part of each meal. Complete Meal Breakfast and Lunch Prices 2015-2016 Paid Reduced Free A complete meal includes entrée, fruit, vegetable and milk. Breakfast Lunch $2.50 $3.00 $.30 $.40 $0 $0 Breakfast and Lunch Applications Applications for free or reduced meals can be found on line, can be picked up in the business office or obtained in the student information packet. The prior year’s eligibility is good for the first 30 days of school to allow parents to submit a new application each school year. Prepayments Lunches can be purchased in advance (prepaid), online at www.myschool bucks or by check payable to Santa Ynez Valley Union High. We encourage parents to set up a student account using your student's seven digit ID number, name and school zip code. Online you can track your student's lunch purchases, make payments, set low balance email notifications, or just check the account balance (additional Information can be found online at: http://www.syvuhsd.org under nutritional services).
