On behalf of the Houston Hispanic Forum Board of Directors, I would like to
welcome you to the 26th Annual Career and Education Day! Each year, we take
great pride in putting together this event for our Houston area community.
This is a great opportunity for each of you to gain more knowledge about the
various careers in the city of Houston as well as meet with college representatives
from around the nation. There is no better time to find out more about reaching
your educational and professional goals.
I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities and resources
available, not only in the exhibit area, but in the information sessions. These
sessions will answer many of your questions relating to specific career paths, the
processes involved in applying for college, and the types of financial assistance
that are available to help make your college education a reality.
I do want to note that this event could not have been possible without the
engagement and support of our community, including corporate and educational
partners as well as all the volunteers who recognize your potential and ability to be
successful.
Enjoy and make the most of your experience with us today at the 26th Annual
Career and Education Day.

Special Guests
Eva Guzman
Justice, Texas Supreme Court
Eva Guzman currently serves as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Texas. She is the first Latina to serve on our
State’s highest civil court. Justice Guzman is a strong advocate for children not only through her work on the
Texas Supreme Court Permanent Commission on Children, Youth and Families but also through her personal
investment in the lives of students in our public schools, especially those in underserved areas. She has tutored
elementary students, mentored teens, and worked with bar associations and other community groups in a variety
of ways to improve educational opportunities for the most vulnerable among us. Her passion for education is
born out of her own experience growing up in Houston’s East End, where she learned firsthand the power of
a disciplined commitment to academic achievement. Sharing the powerful story of her journey from humble
beginnings to the Supreme Court of Texas, Justice Guzman encourages students to “dream big, work hard, and make good choices” so
that they, too, will have the opportunity to succeed.”
Jennifer Hazelton, Chief Financial Officer
Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo
Jennifer Hazelton has served as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo chief financial officer since 2004,
responsible for all finance, membership and educational program operations of the Show. She graduated in
1993 from the University of Richmond in Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a
concentration in accounting. Hazelton is a Virginia licensed certified public accountant and has been a member
of the AICPA since 1993. She lives in Houston and serves on the Advisory Board of Neuhaus Education Center.
Dr. Isabel Gomez-Bassols
Univision Radio Network
Dr. Isabel Gómez-Bassols, better known to her legion of fans around the country as “la Doctora Isabel, el Angel
de la Radio” (Dr. Isabel, the Angel of the Airwaves), is the nation’s foremost Hispanic radio psychologist. A
Latina version of Dr. Laura, Dr. Ruth, Ann Landers and Dr. Phil all rolled into one, her immensely popular, live,
call-in talk show, “Doctora Isabel,” Monday-Friday, 1-3 PM (Eastern Time) is beamed coast to coast daily on
the Spanish-language Univision Radio Network. This warm, thoughtful and charismatic doctor, with a motherly
knack for listening and dispensing advice in a forthright manner, doles out expert opinions daily on a host of
crucial issues ranging from parenting, marital relations, divorce, human sexuality, education, death and mourning
to addictions, co-dependency, teen rebelliousness and violence both in and out of the home. A true media phenomenon, she receives an
average of 8,000 telephone call attempts per day.
Ivan A. Andarza
Chairman of the Board, TG
Mr. Andarza earned his Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Finance from the University of
Texas at Austin in 1993. He received his Juris Doctor from Baylor University School of Law in 1997. His
practice is limited to Immigration Law, Bankruptcy, and Criminal Defense with offices in Austin and San
Antonio. In 2007, Mr. Andarza was appointed by the Governor of Texas to serve on the Board of the Texas
Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG).
Alan Summers
Assistant Superintendent of College and Career Preparation, Houston ISD
Mr. Summers boasts nearly 20 years of experience in the public education sector where his experiences ranged
from elementary to high school teacher, grant writer and administrator. Through his career he helped turnaround
various struggling campuses and helped increase the amount of scholarships students received. He is currently
the Assistant Superintendent of College and Career Preparation for Houston ISD where he recently designed the
Houston Innovative Learning Zone (HILZ) program that provides students at six high schools the opportunity
to earn associate’s degrees in six high interest and high-demand areas while still in high school so that upon
completion they are prepared to either enter the workforce in a good paying job or continue their education
towards a bachelor’s degree. Mr. Summers earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Masters of Education in Administration and
Supervision from University of Houston.

This panel will be about anecdotes and experiences that would
hopefully inspire you into becoming educators too. A group
of professionals will talk about why they decided to become
educators. They will also talk about their different backgrounds
and the routes they followed to end up in their classrooms. You
will find out that there is many ways which can guide you to a
classroom and they are all good. We need more teachers with
passion for what they do regardless of how they went about to
become teachers.
The GeoFORCE Team we will set up a hands-on learning
activity that involves making your own core sample.

College Event Questions
Don’t forget to ask these important questions when talking to college recruiters!
Getting Into College
• What is your admissions policy?
Do you have a minimum GPA or SAT/ACT score to be admitted?
• What happens after I submit my admissions application and when do you make decisions?
• What is the student population like?
For example, traditional college-age or nontraditional; living on campus or off campus; from local/regional area; male/female ratio.
• What is the average high school GPA of the entering freshman class?
• How many undergraduate students are on your campus and what is the average class size for freshman courses?
In general, the fewer students there are per class, the more individual attention you may receive.
• On average, in how many years do your students at your institution complete a bachelor’s (undergraduate)
or associate degree?
For example, 4, 5 or 6 years. The longer it takes to graduate, the more an education costs.
• What is the cost of attendance at your college?
For example, tuition and fees, housing, books, etc.
Paying For College
• Does your college require any financial aid applications or forms in addition to the FAFSA or TASFA?
• What are the financial aid application deadlines?
For example, FAFSA and scholarship applications.
• Is financial aid awarded on a first-come, first-served basis?
• When do you inform me about my financial aid and scholarship offers?
• What does your college do to help me locate other sources of financial aid not associated with your institution?
For example, outside scholarships.
