Box 2766, Grapevine, TX 76099-2766 MARCH 2014 - 1st Quarter 2014 Dallas Autorama 1st Quarter January-March 2014 Wo r kb en ch President’s Column by Lance Reedy Hello Z Club! With our quarterly Newsletter schedule the new year is already moving along quickly as you read this, so lets jump right in. 2013 was a great year for Club activities and saw us make a few additions to our Club’s physical presence in the form of the outdoor teardrop banners and a projector. We’re making good use of these at various car shows (eg. Cars & Coffee) and our monthly meetings. And thanks to efforts from Warren Kline we have some new LED powered elements for the Autorama display and some ideas for further updates. As you know we’re a very active Club and most of us wind up with a variety of pictures and video from Z related gatherings. Which is why we voted to purchase the projector and why David Washington has volunteered to run point in gathering ZCoT related digital media from the membership each month. Whether they’re pictures and video clips of TX Tours, or images from other Z gatherings we need them for display at the meetings and for promotional use at Autorama. Promoting the Club is something that we all do whenever we show up at a group event, when we run into other Z drivers around town, and when newcomers join us at the meetings. Being a very active club that is full of friendly people is one of the things that sets us apart, and it’s one of the things that draws people to the Z Club of Texas. With a full schedule of charity events, TX Tours, Tech Sessions, track days and more for 2014 we have some great opportunities to enjoy our cars and the friendships that they’ve helped us forge. We’ve already had a new addition to the TX Tour library which took us down to West, and another that included parade laps at Motorsport Ranch. There are some other new things in the works for this year, and more ideas are always welcome! If you know of any firms that qualify, please contact ‘Mad’ Mike Taylor 4 17 Member Profile (continued) Wrapping up the cars on display at the home (not counting two parts cars) is this 280Z that Scott recently completed. He explains that the car had already been repainted when he found it and he brought the rest of the car into a restoration condition. We can all see that Scott has a fondness for Konig Rewind wheels! Scott explains that this car is intended to be his “driver” Z so I’m sure we can expect to see it frequently at club events. Not shown but very much a topic of discussion is Sarah’s late ’71 240Z – a Persimmon Orange car. Originally sold in Baytown TX, Scott and Sarah found the car still with its original owner and all maintenance records available. It is an unmolested and rust-free survivor. Sarah breaks into a big grin when talking about her plans the Z: a full Fairlady ZG conversion and triple Webers on the L24. There are only a couple of “small” items keeping Sarah from driving her car right now: dad has all the cars covered by collector car insurance (no drivers under 25) and it seems that Sarah has yet to master a 4-speed manual transmission. Getting back to the Bronco, Scott shares the story of his experiences with his father when he was just a boy. He and his dad enjoyed a lot of outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing, and his father’s Bronco was always a key element in their outings. Dad had swapped out the front bumper with a section of railroad rail as a crosspiece and it enabled them to literally mow down small trees and bushes on cross-country runs. After his dad died a few years ago, Scott decided to take on a ’74 Bronco restoration project as a tribute to his dad and to share some of those experiences with his family. Given the quality of Scott’s work with the Ford, I doubt any of us will see it doing any off-road work! Scott’s work, his family and church activities, and his car projects have limited his ZCoT participation to the occasional club meeting – something that Scott expects will change with his recent retirement from AT&T. In addition to his car interests, Scott is very much an outdoorsman and is making plans to get back into the hunting and fishing he enjoyed in years past. While he does not have a “Walter Mitty” wish per se, Scott does have this recurring dream of visiting Japan with Mad Mike and getting introduced to Mr. K. The dream continues with Mr. K taking Scott thru a door that opens into a long forgotten warehouse and giving him his choice of all the 1969 NOS Z parts that he can find. Meeting Minutes by Bob Bosse The February 2014 ZCoT monthly meeting was called to order at 7:30PM on February 20, 2014 by President Lance Reedy at the New New Buffet restaurant in Addison, TX. Lance introduced himself and the remaining 2014 Officers: Edward Cheung, Vice President; Bob Bosse, Secretary; Kay Newton, Treasurer. Treasurer’s Report (Kay Newton): All AutoRama bills are paid. The 6th issue of the ZCCM Magazine has been purchased. ZCCA dues are due. The Audit committee (Jim Arnett and David Washington) completed their audit and provided Kay with their report which showed no irregularities or errors were found in the Treasure’s books. Boutique Report (Glen Newton): Glen is in the process of conducting an inventory of all Boutique items and will release it to the Club upon completion. Lots of product is available for sale. Glen is looking for a volunteer to replace himself as Committee Chair. Please consider taking responsibility for this Committee and speak to Glen or any Officer if you’re interested. Inventory takes up approximately 13 storage bins. Community Service (Katy Taylor): - Katy thanked everyone for the great success of the “Center of Hope” cooking event on Feb. 2. Approximately 70 adults and children were well fed and they especially enjoyed the desserts. - Upcoming events: TBA Texas Tours (Lance Reedy): - Jan. 25, was the 2014 kick-off Tour using a new route to West, TX (see Club Facebook Page for video) with a great turnout of 12 cars and 1 two wheeler. Lunch was at the Czech American Restaurant followed by pictures at the Rail Station. - The Feb. Tour will be to Clark’s Outpost (BBQ) in Tioga, TX. The date is March 1, and will meet at 9:50am (leave at 10:15am) in Plano immediately following the Cars and Coffee show. - Mike Brunner is trying to plan a Tour that will hook up with one of the Driver Ed. Track days at MSR at noon time to do parade laps. The current planned date is March 29. Details TBA. Car Shows (Bill Hayden, Warren Kline): - Autorama: Great success this year with all six cars taking home trophies and the Club winning the best Club Display which came with a $500 prize! And Kay Newton got her picture taken with “Danielle” from the TV show “Pickers.” - Nismo Fiesta: This year the April 25-27 event will be held in San Marcus instead of San Antonio. It will include a Track Event at Harris Hill (sold out at last check.) Go to www. nismofiesta.com for details. - Bill Hayden will investigate the possibility of having a car show at Courtesy or McKinney Nissan…or both! That could easily be a dream we might all share in! 16 5 Meeting Minutes Member Profile by Bob Bosse February 2014 Minutes (continued) - The Mid-Tennessee Z Club will be hosting “Z Attack” in Franklin, TN on April 11 and 12. Motorsports (Renee Hayden): Contact Renee if you’re interested in any of these events. - MSR – Cresson, TX: March 29 & 30 (Noon Parade Laps could (?) be part of same day Texas Tour.) (continued) acquired VIN #550 in Austin for that critical parts role, as the shell is too far gone with rust to make a recovery. Scott anticipates that #87 will get finished sometime next year. VIN #248 is at the opposite end of the spectrum as evidenced by these pictures: - MSR – Houston, TX: April 5 & 6. - TWS – College Station, TX: May 17 & 18. - CVAR racing will be held at Eagle Canyon May 17-18 and reports say that 3-4 vintage 240Zs will be running! Pass on your good pictures and videos to David. - Dan Prall is coordinating obtaining a block of great seats at this year’s COTA F1 Race. Contact him immediately for details if you are interested. These seats will go on sale the first week March! Visitors Welcomed (Edward Cheung): Multiple visitors were introduced and each talked about their Z Car and how they heard about the Z Club of Texas. Tech Session (Edward Cheung): The detailing session for those cars entered in Autorama was COLD out. Next Tech Session will be in Mid-March. Watch for details in e-mail blast and on the Forum and Club Facebook Page. NOTE from Edward Cheung: A “Dyno Day” will be put on by Specialty Z at ATS Racing in Denton, TX on March 22. Check with Edward for further details. 50/50 (Matt Blanco): $148.00 total collected with $74.00 donated to the Club Treasury and $74.00 to winner Jon White. Meeting was adjourned by Lance at 8:20PM. 6 This car is heavily modified inside and out. The car began life with a Sherman TX owner and somewhere along the way it lost its original engine. Scott found the car in Rogers Arkansas with its second owner who had already completed all the drivetrain and chassis upgrades. It currently has a LT1 engine, mated to a T-56 6-speed transmission. A custom driveshaft feeds into a R230 rear-end with custom half-shafts and exotic suspension bits. Scott says the car is a bit of a “challenge” to drive with the Stage-3 clutch, quick-steering knuckles, and big tires. Scott admits that the car begs to be on the track but he has not yet come to grips with the inevitable wear and tear that track runs would bring. Oh, and Kim makes it clear that he will never have enough life insurance to get permission for track outings. The ’75 Scarab is one of 189 factory cars produced before the business was shut down by the State of California; it is one of the very last production models and is fitted out with the small-block 327 C.I. engine that customers could choose as an alternative to the big-block 350. This example was built from a customer-supplied car and Scott is the third owner. That’s Scott and Sarah beside the car with a shot of the big V8 power plant below. The car is original is all aspects except for the Konig Rewind wheels and new tires. The original Cromodora wheels that Scarab supplied came with the car and can be called on for exhibition use but have become too fragile for regular use. Here’s one of the ’78 Black Pearl editions recently back from the paint shop. This car is destined to get an “as delivered” appearance restoration with very slight internal mods to the engine. Scott has managed to pick up a NOS pin stripe kit that was part of the Special Appearance Package on these cars. Of the total run of about 1,500 Black Pearl cars, only about 850 had the SAP option. The wheels currently on the car are obviously aftermarket and will be replaced by stock as the project nears completion. 15 Member Profile Meeting Minutes by Bob Bosse by Jim Arnett Scott McElroy and Family Can a family ever have enough Z’s? Can a family ever have too many Z’s? Somewhere in the middle of these two questions is the McElroy family. I arrived at their home in Frisco recently to find Scott, his wife Kim, and daughter Sarah surrounded by part of their “fleet” of Z cars and three late model Nissan daily drivers. Seven Z’s were in attendance and Scott later revealed that seven more were at off-site storage locations. Also off-site, a restored to “as delivered” 1974 Ford Bronco – we’ll get back to that one later. Significant to this family is that all of the Z’s except one are S30 models – or at least they started life that way. The exception car is a 1983 280ZX that Scott credits ((blames?) as the starting point for today’s collection. Scott is an Arkansas native, growing up near Eldorado and later attending college at Louisiana Tech where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then returned to Arkansas where he went to work for Southwestern Bell. Scott shares that his first supervisor was later destined to become his father-in-law. The back story for all the cars begins with Scott’s graduation from college and the purchase of his first Z - a new ’83 280ZX which he drove for a couple of years and then traded up to a ’83 280ZX Turbo – silver in color. This car went on to become Kim’s ride. As the years progressed and the family grew with daughters Jennifer and Sarah, sports cars were traded away for more family-friendly vehicles. Fast forward several years and Scott found himself looking for a restoration project. While going through ads, he located a ’83 280ZX nearby and checked it out. What he found was a car in excellent condition and ready for additional miles, silver in color just like the turbo from years prior. He took Kim over to drive the car and afterwards was sure he had made a serious mistake. After her test drive, Kim returned to their truck without a word being said. Scott excused himself from the Z’s owner and went to check on Kim. Her words to him were “As soon as my butt hit the seat, memories came flooding back; just go buy it.”. It’s that purchase that Scott claims is responsible for their current holdings. That’s Kim seated in the “culprit”. To say that S30’s are Scott’s passion is pretty close to being on target. He explains that every car he owns is special in its own way. Here’s the list in age sequence: VIN #87, VIN # 248, a Series 1 Safari Gold car, a late ’71 car, a Scarab, a 280Z, two Black Pearl edition 280Z’s, and five parts cars. VIN #87 is an early stage work-in-progress that is targeted for an “as delivered” restoration. Scott and daughter Sarah are continually scouring the internet for NOS parts and some of the parts cars will be making substantial contributions to the project. Sarah provides some key support for her dad by helping to organize and keep track of all the parts on hand and those yet needed – and yes, she also does a bit of wrenching. Scott recently 14 The March 2014 monthly meeting was called to order at 7:29PM on March 20, 2014 by President Lance Reedy at the New New Buffet restaurant in Addison, TX. Lance introduced himself and the remaining 2014 Officers: Edward Cheung, Vice President; Bob Bosse, Secretary; Kay Newton, Treasurer. Treasurer’s Report (Kay Newton): Everything is A OK. Boutique Report (Glen Newton): Glen completed the inventory of all Boutique items and presented the report to the Officers and is available to all Club members. Glen is still looking for a volunteer to replace himself as Committee Chair. Please consider taking responsibility for this Committee and speak to Glen or any Officer if you’re interested.
