JULY/AUG 2014 - Stampin` Up!
JULY/AUG 2014 Summer has arrived, and warmer weather means barbecues, picnics, reunions, and parties. Whenever we get together with people we care about, whether it’s family or friends, we definitely want to do it outside so we can enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer this time of year! (In Utah, our outside gathering time is limited, so we like to make the most of it!) And whether we’re gathering to celebrate significant milestones (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) or everyday life, we can definitely make these celebrations even more memorable by adding our own personal creative touch. In my experience, people always pay more attention to a gathering if I send out an invitation, even if it’s just for a neighborhood party. More people know about it, and more people come—and that’s what I want. theme of the gathering. Whether we choose to do just one or two of these things—or everything we can think of—these personal touches make the gathering fun and festive. Plus, for crafters like us, creating these projects is almost as fun as the gathering itself, right? I love that Stampin’ Up!® products make creating these types of things (along with cards, scrapbook pages, and so much more) as easy as they are fun! Of course I look forward to getting together with people I care about, but I also look forward to creating, because I know with Stampin’ Up! adding my personal touch to any celebration is quick and stress-free! I hope your summer is warm and wonderful—and that you enjoy both creating for and hosting your summer celebrations! And once they come, it’s fun to have a few decorations to set the stage for a wonderful celebration. Try your hand at DIYing your own personalized dream catcher! Every dream catcher has essentially three parts: the hoop, the webbing, and the hanging elements. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT: 1. Choose a color scheme for your dream catcher. 2. Wrap your ribbon of choice around a metal hoop. 3. Use twine or ribbon to create your web in the center of your metal hoop. 4. Add your hanging elements. HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FOR YOUR CREATIVE HANGING ELEMENTS: •A dd unique shapes. We used feathers from the digital Feathered Woodcuts Kit and an e-cutter. •A dd a word that has meaning for you. We added the word, “Dream,” using the Chat Room Baby digital download and an e-cutter. •A dd color. We added a pop of color by using a contrasting color of Baker’s Twine on a section of the hoop. Dream catchers are meant to catch pleasant dreams. Then, those pleasant dreams are meant to slide down the hanging elements into the mind of a dreamer. To catch the most creative dreams, your dream catcher should reflect your personal style and creativity. Now is the time to embody your dreams in a creation. Dream away! Tip: For our triangles, we kneaded ink into our Simply Pressed Clay (item 130685), rolled it out, let it dry, and cut triangles using scissors. dream catcher DIY A Happy Hooray Stamp Set; Bermuda Bay, Whisper White, and White Vellum Cardstock; Tea Lace Paper Doilies; Hello Honey Classic Stampin’ Pad®; VersaMark® Pad; Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana, and Hello Honey Classic Stampin’ Ink® Refills; Gold Stampin’ Emboss® Powder; Gold 1/8", Natural 5/8" Chevron, 7/8" Cotton, Gold 5/8" Satin, and Hello Honey 3/8" Stitched Satin Ribbon; Crumb Cake 1/2" Seam Binding; Venetian Crochet Trim; Gold Sequin Trim; Bermuda Bay, Gold, and Whisper White Baker’s Twine; Baked Brown Sugar and Coastal Cabana Thick Baker’s Twine; Linen Thread; Simply Pressed™ Clay; Vintage Faceted Designer Buttons; MDS; Feathered Woodcuts Kit and Chat Room Baby Stamp Brush Set MDS downloads; metal hoop; needle and thread 5 © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! CASEing CASE (kās) v. Copy And Share Everything In the world of papercrafting, there is no shame in copying; in fact, we encourage it! CASEing is an easy way to come up with a project quickly, and there’s more than one way to CASE. You can copy a project exactly, or you can switch out some of the elements to adapt it for different needs. Sometimes coming up with a project design idea takes longer than actually making the project itself. That’s okay if you enjoy the process and have ample time for creative scheming. But if your time is limited or you just want to get straight to the fun of making a card, CASEing is where it’s at. It’s also a great concept to share with your customers. They’ll feel less overwhelmed in the creative process knowing that it’s okay to take ideas and get inspiration from other places. One of those go-to places is our catalog. the Draw the Line Stamp Set to get the same horizontal striped look. She chose a photopolymer set, which makes it easier to see the stamp image and get that perfect placement (a Stamp-a-ma-jig® comes in handy too). During your events you can demonstrate projects that you CASEd from the catalog—whether you re-created the exact project or took an idea or two from it and gave it your own spin. If you did the latter, talk your customers through your CASEing thought process. Here’s what we did with the Hello card from the catalog (feel free to CASE this CASE!). Lastly, we liked how the hello greeting is the focal point on the card and pretty much copied it exactly, just switching out the message. Our artist did note that if you don’t want to bother with hand-cutting out the greeting, the card would look just as great with a banner piece—that’s the beauty of CASEing—you can copy and change whatever you want. It’s all up to you! CASEing We love how the Hello card highlights our 2014–2016 In Colors®. We wanted to keep that element going in our Thanks card. Sometimes the only thing you CASE is a color scheme. In this case (get the pun?), those colors are: Hello Honey, Lost Lagoon, Mossy Meadow, and Tangelo Twist. 6 Rather than using cardstock to highlight the colors, our artist used As a contrast to the striped look, our artist wanted to include the arrow embellishment. She gave it a little twist by using the arrow from the Essentials Hardware Clips instead of a stamped arrow—and kept the Whisper White Baker’s Twine layer. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3: 1 . Stamp on Designer Series Paper. 2. Use a die to create a dramatic cut-out shape. 3. A dd some Glimmer Paper for extra glitz. Make a Good Thing Better Our bold Hip-Hip Hooray! cards are perfect for celebratory summer birthdays or giving congratulations. Showing your customers both a simple and stepped-up version broadens the scope of the basic design and what they can do with it. (Translation: more upselling opportunities for you!) SIMPLE CHANGES. ANY PROJECT. ANY STAMPER. As you’re sharing these projects at an event, you could point out the difference in the background paper and say something like, “Using this border stamp on the Designer Series Paper with matching ink adds a subtle but distinct depth. The border stamps make a nice accent on projects and work on all types of designs. Make sure to add them to your wish list.” And showing your customers how to step up the star gives you a chance to upsell the Big Shot, dies, Glimmer Paper, and Stampin’ Dimensionals! To make the glitzy star, you’ll die-cut the largest star using the Glimmer Paper, flip the sheet over that has the cutout, use a ruler to make a larger outline around the star, and then cut it out. Your customers won’t be able to resist getting the stepped-up look! Feel free to change things up, but you’ll find everything you need for your next round of parties on these two pages. Want to know the key to a successful party? The answer is so simple: bundles. There’s much to like about them, but top of the list is how easy they are for customers, whether they are bundled as one item by Stampin’ Up! or are different items that coordinate. Check out page 58 of the annual catalog, for instance. It features the Cupcake Party Stamp Set and three coordinating products that you can suggest as a bundle. Simple for you to demonstrate and for customers to purchase! Don’t worry, we’ll show you how. • Show the samples. Demonstrate these samples during parties so people will get excited about them. A nice variety, such as the ones shown here, ensures customers will find at least one appealing. • R efer to the catalog. Just Tie a bow on It Here at Stampin’ Up!, we’ve got a thing for gift packaging. Have you noticed? Now, part of the fun of gift-getting is not knowing what’s behind the lovely packaging—right? A box of chocolates is lovely . . . but a box of chocolates swathed in coral and pink tissue paper, wrapped in gold foil, and topped with a hand-tied ribbon is an altogether different experience. It’s hard not to feel gratitude for someone who goes the extra mile to give you a thoughtful gift. And it’s almost impossible not to feel fabulous when you are the one doing the giving! But what’s a slice of pie without the ice cream? And what’s a gift without a bow? With that in mind, we thought we would give you a couple of ideas for making handmade bows, which you can then share at your next workshop. When customers see how easy it is to create professional-looking bows with our high-quality ribbon, adhesive, and just a few simple techniques, they might just be inspired to buy! Why not plan an entire workshop around pretty packaging? After teaching customers how to make our easy ribbon bows, introduce them to our fun selection of gift boxes, Kraft bags, and muslin and cellophane bags. And when you’re done with that, show them how to make quick and easy tags with our stamps, punches, and cardstock. You could go a very, very long time and never hit the bottom of gift packaging possibilities using Stampin’ Up! products. It’s what we do. We also love to put heart into everything we do. And sharing handmade cards and creating lovely gift embellishments and wrappings show the people we love that they matter, that they are special, and that we want to share a part of ourselves with them. You can definitely tie a bow on that! Tailored Bow STEP 1. Wrap Bermuda Bay 1-1/4" Striped Grosgrain Ribbon lengthwise around the box; adhere the ends using hot glue. STEP 2. Cut banner tips on both ends of a 7" length of ribbon and adhere it to the top of the box using hot glue. (Notice how we folded the end of the ribbon to make the banner sides even.) See photo A. It helps busy people (so basically all of us) document life using photos and journaling in a quick, simple, and fabulous way. We’ve partnered with Becky Higgins, creator of Project Life, to offer a complete line of elite products. Becky explains, “It's called Project LIFE because it's about YOUR LIFE. Whatever your life is. Whatever your stage of life. Whatever your family circumstances. Whatever your lifestyle. Project Life is designed to help anyone and everyone get their pictures into a book.” How Does It Work? It couldn’t be simpler: slip photos, mementos, coordinating cards, and journaling into an album with Photo Pocket Pages. That alone will give you fabulous results (no scissors or glue required!); if you want to do more, you can embellish your photos or cards with accessories or stamps. best day ever page (12" x 12") Day to Day Stamp Set; Make Note This and That and Remember This and That Rotary Stamps; Everyday Adventure Project Life Accessory Pack; Everyday Adventure Project Life Card Collection; Jet Black StazOn® Pad; Black Project Life Journaling Pens; Project Life Corner Punch wonderful page (12" x 12") Remember This and That Rotary Stamp; Crushed Curry Cardstock; Everyday Adventure Project Life Card Collection; Jet Black StazOn Pad; Black Project Life Journaling Pens; Small Heart Punch ay Adventure d ry e v E e th e s »These pagCeasrdu Collection and Accessory Pack. Project Life Who’s It For? We’ve all heard people say scrapbooking takes too much time. You’ve probably had that thought yourself a time or two. That’s why Project Life works so well for all of us. It’s quick and easy and has a fresh approach. And for those who don’t do simple, you can embellish to your heart’s content. So in a nutshell, Project Life is for everyone—the scrapbookologists, the timid, and the skeptical. What’s Included? No one does high quality crafting and coordination like Stampin’ Up! and our Project Life products are up to par. These include albums, pocket pages, card collections, accessory packs, Framelits, a corner rounder punch, stamps, and journaling pens (all sold separately). Our Project Life albums come in two sizes: 12" x 12" and 6" x 8". The bigger size works well for everyday documenting, creating a baby or wedding album, or documenting your family history since there’s lots of space for pictures, cards, and journaling. The 6" x 8" album is great for documenting events with fewer photos such as graduation, vacation, or highlighting an event to give as a gift. You’ll want to fill your albums with photos and pocket cards. Cropping your photos is a cinch when you use the Cards & Labels Project Life Framelits Dies with the Magnetic Platform. Our card collections have squared corners but with the Project Life Corner Punch you can choose to have them either way. If you want to step up your photos and pocket cards, just use the photopolymer and rotary stamps for easy placement and our accessory packs for complete coordination. Scrapbooking What Now? 12 Many of our products lend themselves to “fancy” memory keeping, and that intimidates a lot of people. This product opens doors to those who just want a solution, and everyone will love how simple, beautiful, and downright fun Project Life is. It’s addicting! So you’ll even want to share it with people who haven’t ordered from you yet. © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! HERE’S WHAT TO DO: 1. Buy it and use it so you have your own testimonial. 2. Learn about the benefits and how it works so you can easily talk about it. 3. Share this new product line with everyone—whether or not they scrapbook. Many are looking for a way to preserve their memories but are often overwhelmed by the idea of scrapbooking. Project Life is the perfect solution! 4. Talk about it in your parties and events. Share your enthusiasm! Scrapbooking So, whatever YOUR life is, celebrate it with Project Life! And tell your customers to do the same. 13 © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! it's good to be a Star Before we could use our smartphones to help us find the nearest grocery store, people had to rely on paper maps to find their way. But if you go even further back, people had to rely on stars to help them get around. There are certain stars, if you know how to use them, which occupy identifiable positions in the sky and can help us know where we are in relation to where we are going. The trick is knowing how to use them. You can imagine a mother or father sitting around the fire at night, pointing out helpful stars to their children in the same way parents now teach their kids to memorize their addresses and phone numbers. If they have the right information, they can find their way. When you hear the term “Rising Star” now, you might immediately think of someone who is rising through the ranks and is standing out like a bright star in the sky. Stampin’ Up! offers what is called the Rising Star Performance Bonus to new demonstrators as an incentive to take the opportunity to rise up in their new business and stand out. And it is good to be a star! Not only do you receive rewards for your efforts, but like those bright stars that were once used to show the way, Rising Stars can serve as guides to other demonstrators who are looking to be successful in their business. What is the Rising Star Performance Bonus? You are a new demonstrator. How do you get started? Just like those people who used the stars to navigate to their destinations, the important thing to do is to find out where you are in the first place. Take a look at your business in its current state. Where is it in comparison to your goals? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What area is going to pose the biggest challenge? And as every journey begins with that first step, break down your journey into achievable sub goals. Maybe recruiting isn’t a problem, and you already have friends or family eager to join your downline. So focus on your sales. How many events do you need to hold in a month to reach your sales goal? Sometimes that first step is the hardest one, but once you take it, your journey is well underway! Read about the journey of one of our Rising Stars in the March/April 2014 issue of Stampin’ Success. You have new demonstrators in your downline. How do you help them get started? In the same way that knowledge of the stars was handed from person to person, as an upline you have the opportunity—and responsibility—to help your new downline member start down the path of achieving their goals. First things first; make sure they know about the Rising Star Performance Bonus. A lot of information is coming their way in those first days and weeks, and you can’t expect them to figure it all out on their own. Setting a measurable goal like the Rising Star Performance Bonus in front of them may give them the focus they need to start down the path of becoming a Rising Star. And as they start setting their goals and determining what steps they need to take, be ready to step in with practical advice and help when they need it. Sometimes, even if we have a map, it isn’t that hard to get lost, so make sure you are there to help as your new recruits take those first tentative steps forward. Think again of those people who only had the stars to lead them, and their relief on a cloudy night to see the stars they needed rising up before them out of a clearing sky. As demonstrators, both new and experienced, the Rising Star Performance Bonus can serve as a guide we can use to make sure we are on the right path. Feature Simply stated, in their first full year as a demonstrator, the goal is to reach $18 thousand us/$24 thousand can in individual sales and three promotions to senior associate in their downline. Ambitious? Sure. But with great achievements come great rewards. That’s why it’s called an incentive! When a new demonstrator achieves this goal, they receive a cash bonus of $1,000 us/ $1,300 can and a free trip to the Stampin’ Up! home office for a magnificent retreat with other Rising Stars. They get to socialize with other achievers, learn from what they are doing, and receive additional training from the home office to help them continue to build their business. 14 © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! Take a minute and think about the number of gifts you give in a year. Then think about how many people you know, and remember they give gifts too! It’s clear what that means: there’s a huge need for gift packages, so it’s time to spread the word about our packaging kits! Let’s take a look at the A Little Sumthin’ Sumthin’ Gift Box Kit and all the ways you can use it. Yes, that’s right: ways. This treat packaging comes with pillow boxes that are already precut and prescored. Ribbon, clothespins, and bubble word sheets accent the pillow boxes. Earning a Stampin’ Up! incentive trip is one of the most exciting moments you can experience as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator—other than attending the trip itself, of course! Stampin’ Up! incentive trips are one-of-a-kind vacations, designed to reward you for your hard work plus provide an opportunity to get away from it all. While it isn’t easy to earn these trips, it’s absolutely possible! We’ve asked two demonstrators to share their stories, and they’ll tell you (along with every other demonstrator who has ever gone on an incentive trip): It was well worth the effort! Stampin’ Up! hosts the best trips ever! Cherle Jones, Manager, Ohio: Joanna Jones, Senior Manager, Oklahoma: Cherle is not new to being an achiever; she was a Rising A demonstrator since 1996, Joanna earned her first incentive trip (the Getaway) in 2012—after 16 years of being a demonstrator! She earned the Grand Vacation the next year and tells everyone that she can’t believe it took her this long! Star her first year (she joined in November 2010). Fiji was her first incentive trip, and she earned the Western Caribbean Cruise as well, so she’s definitely established an incentive trip habit! “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to earn the incentive trips, but I never really thought it was possible. I’m not one to get up in front of people, so being a demonstrator was all new to me. But my sister and her friend kept pushing me to have classes, so I did. It happened quickly—and I loved it! People were so happy to see what they could make! “My advice would be to work hard and show your love Business for what you do. People will see that. Stampin’ Up! 18 constantly gives us the products and promotions to make earning the trips possible. Make the most of the help that Stampin’ Up! offers, whether in an online Q&A, videos and tutorials, e-mail or phone calls. Believe in yourself and visualize yourself earning that trip!” “When Stampin’ Up! announced the smaller incentive trip in 2011, I realized that maybe I could earn that. My annual sales weren’t too far off, so I thought I’d give it a try. I took the total amount I needed to earn the trip and divided that up per month, and then watched my totals every month. We’ve heard it at convention for years, so I didn’t do anything new; I just applied what I’d been hearing! When you watch your totals, you tend to stretch a bit more . . . plan an extra event or send an e-mail about promotions and specials. And that pays off! “I don’t really have any tips; after all, it took me 16 years to earn my first trip! But consistency definitely paid off. I have seven clubs, and many of my customers have been with me for years. I also offer club members an incentive to bring a friend along. I do our fair every year, which brings me new customers. And I often try ideas that I get from visiting with other demonstrators at convention or leadership. These things have all helped me become an incentive trip earner!” © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! Whether you’re interested in the Getaway (a three-night weekend trip with a guest) or the Grand Vacation (a weeklong adventure with a guest to an extraordinary location), we provide all sorts of tips and hints to help you achieve your goal on the demonstrator website (see Events>Incentive Events>Incentive Trip). Business 19 © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! Kits, kits, Kits WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT KITS FOR A WHILE. WE’VE BEEN ADDING THEM TO CATALOGS AND TELLING YOU HOW GREAT THEY ARE. HAVE YOU TRIED THEM? DO YOU AND YOUR CUSTOMERS LOVE THEM? GOOD! THEY’RE HERE TO STAY. Taken from the US annual catalog. No Room? Need Social Interaction? One of the main reasons people say they’re not interested in creating is that they don’t have room for all the supplies. You hear it all the time, but with kits you have a great solution to offer! Customers only need a few products to make projects in kits. Some of our kits call for a little more than others—like those you’ll find on page 198 of the 2014–2015 annual catalog—but not much more. You can see the A Little Sumthin’ Sumthin’ Simply Created Gift Box kit in action on page 16 in this issue of Stampin’ Success. No Creativity? Your customers probably love getting together with others and having that social bonding time. Well kits are great for that, too. Think about it! Instead of having to come up with new projects for every class you teach, you can use kits to supplement your ideas. You can charge a fee for the class to cover the cost of the kit and maybe a little more to pay for any additional supplies you provide. Then the money your customers spend goes toward your minimum, and you don’t have to do much to prepare. In the class they all make the projects from the chosen kit. You could have one kit class each month. If ten people come to one class per Kits are great for those people who think they lack creative vision. They still get that dose of creativity without having to stress about coming up with something to make on their own. Perfect! Plus kits can be used for all kinds of occasions: birthdays, gratitude, just because, etc. And our kits aren’t always just card kits, either. We have banners and even home décor. Make kits part of your business. We believe in them so much that you will start seeing regular articles about kits in upcoming issues of Stampin’ Success. We’ll highlight new kits and offer helpful advice on using them in your business. Who’s excited?! month and buy a kit, how would that affect your sales? Do the math! Earn Your collage degree OUR NEW KINDA ECLECTIC STAMP SET IS MORE THAN KINDA COOL! Webster’s Dictionary defines collage as “an artistic composition made of various materials glued on a surface; hodgepodge.” We define collage as Kinda Eclectic— a stamp set that combines a variety of traditional images in an unexpected way . . . perfect for creating projects with lots of layers, lots of looks, and lots of creativity! You’ll find this is an ideal stamp set to feature at one of your stamping events. The main message: You can’t go wrong when you create with Kinda Eclectic! Whether you’re an existing stamper who loves to start from scratch or a new stamper who is intrigued and perhaps a little intimidated, Kinda Eclectic is the stamp set for you. There’s no wrong way to put these stamps together . . . no wrong way to explore, play, and layer. Grab a couple of different stamp pads, an accessory or two, and this one stamp set, and you’ve got everything you need to create a wide variety of looks and projects. Make that point by pulling out the darling Demo It Kindness notecard. It uses four of the six stamps in the set and takes mere minutes to put together. There’s plenty of room for artistic stampers to add their own style, while the follow-to-the-letter stamper will enjoy the exhilaration of creating something fun and fresh as well. Display two other fun projects— for example, the Kindness card and Just Because bag—as Make & Takes, and your customers will see how fun it can be to study the art of collage. And while your customers are enjoying stamping, you’ll enjoy seeing your sales increase! Not only is Kinda Eclectic a musthave stamp set, it coordinates with two must-have punches: the Elegant Butterfly and Bitty Butterfly. And when you mention the Aqua Painter® (the perfect tool for adding splatters, which always look good on collage artwork), washi tape (see how quick and easy they are to add to the gift bag?), and buttons and sequins (also perfect accents for these types of projects), your sales will climb even higher. just because bag And Many More and Kinda Eclectic Stamp Sets; Crushed Curry Cardstock; Flower Pot Designer Series Paper; Sweet Sadie Designer Washi Tape; Polka Dot Tag a Bag Gift Bags; Crushed Curry and Lost Lagoon Classic Stampin’ Pads; Whisper White Craft Stampin’ Pad; Jet Black StazOn Pad; Gold Sequin Trim; Brights Designer Buttons; Essentials Wooden Elements; Elegant Butterfly Punch; Baker’s Twine; Basic Metal Buttons; Stampin’ Dimensionals; Big Shot; Banners Framelits Dies; Arrows Textured Impressions™ Embossing Folder a little kindness notecard (3-1/2" x 5") Kinda Eclectic Stamp Set; Whisper White Note Cards & Envelopes; Flower Pot Designer Series Paper; Crushed Curry, Lost Lagoon, Night of Navy, Tangerine Tango, and Wild Wasabi Classic Stampin’ Pads; Gold Sequin Trim; Aqua Painter; Bitty Butterfly Punch a little kindness card (5-1/2" x 4-1/4") Kinda Eclectic Stamp Set; Crumb Cake and Whisper White Cardstock; Flower Pot Designer Series Paper; Crumb Cake and Wild Wasabi Classic Stampin’ Pads; 2014–2016 In Color, Brights, and Night of Navy Stampin’ Write® Markers; Linen Thread; Vintage Faceted Designer Buttons; Stampin’ Dimensionals; Big Shot; Window Frames Collection Framelits Dies »Fill this bag with treats for a fun hostess gift. »Stamp off the polka dot image before stamping Stamps on the wood; it will help create a softer look. 24 »Stamp off the Wild Wasabi leaves to create a subtle background for the greeting on the A Little Kindness card. © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! For the last several years you’ve received new catalog product bundles when you perform at a certain title (AKA Title Benefit Bundles). Instead of planning your bundles, we now offer a straightforward product credit. “I’m excited; I like being able to choose my own products because I know my business and what appeals to me and my customers.” -Chelsey Christensen Now you can choose items from each new catalog that you want to play with and things you know your customers will want to see. You know what you like and what your customers are drawn to. Plus, everyone runs their business just a little different. This change makes running your business in your own way even easier and more fun. “I love that we can pick our own products now! It’s their appreciation that means so much to me.” Minnie Cieslak Senior Supervisor San Antonio, Texas What’s even better than a heaping bowl of delicious ice cream after a bad breakup? Stamping. That’s what Minnie Cieslak’s neighbor told her when she introduced Minnie to it in 1989. And Minnie found first-hand that her neighbor was right! Soon after, Minnie learned how to heat emboss with a small coffee cup hot plate. She (and, let’s admit it, the industry) has come a long way since then. Nearly a decade later, Minnie joined Stampin’ Up! after seeing a demonstrator’s booth at a rubber stamp convention in California where a large Victorian Lace stamp caught her eye. Minnie contacted Stampin’ Up! and signed up right away so she could get her hands on that stamp and enjoy the discount. Minnie’s plan was to stay with Stampin’ Up! for a year and go to the, “very much talked about 1998 Stampin’ Up! convention in San Diego”—but not before stocking up on all her crafting supplies at a discount (sound familiar?). She made it to the convention and on the way home her husband told her he didn’t want her to quit. She says, “He said he’d never seen me so happy with a smile from ear to ear.” This customer appreciation is what helps motivate Minnie in balancing her demanding full-time job as an executive assistant with her family life and demonstratorship. She says that learning when to take one hat off and put her Stampin’ Up! hat on is an ongoing process. But she shares, “Knowing that I have customers who look forward to coming to a class or a workshop is my motivation to make time for what needs to be done. And having the support and encouragement from my husband, Don, has also been a plus. He can’t stamp but he makes great appetizers for the ladies.” Minnie enjoys, “having the opportunity to go outside my comfort zone, being innovative, and giving the best customer service that I can.” She runs her business by focusing on what she loves to do: stamping, creating, and sharing her passion with friends and family. We’d say that’s better than breakup ice cream any day. Minnie’s Recruiting Tip “Throughout your workshop or class presentation, plant seeds. Don’t be shy about showing your passion and how much fun you have.” Minnie’s Sales Tip Making a Difference “Don’t sabotage yourself by thinking that you have That joy has stayed. Going on 16 years with Stampin’ Up!, Minnie’s inspiration comes from “the joy and excitement of creating a card for someone and then seeing them put to know everything about the products. You don’t have to be an expert. Just show your enthusiasm when you’re demonstrating the products.” 28 © 1990–2014 STAMPIN' UP! I think each recruit has to be treated as an individual; not everyone has the same goals or feels they can reach them at the same time. If we tailor our approach to each individual—while keeping the overall message and sharing of information the same— we can help them achieve their goals and hopefully keep them as active, productive demonstrators for longer periods of time! How do you get your new recruits to go from “I just want the kit” to actually placing orders and promoting? An upcoming Q&A will focus on the following question: How do you transition from a full-time job to doing Stampin' Up! as a career? What aspect of your business made the biggest difference in being able to replace your income? Any tips on making the transition? We may not be able to share all of the responses we receive, but we’d love to read and share as many as possible.* Please include your demonstrator ID with your response. We want to make sure we give credit to the right person. We’d also love to know what questions you’d like other demonstrators to answer. Send your questions and answers to [email protected] . Please send responses to this question by July 31, 2014. Deborah Smart Consultant Burnaby, British Columbia Once new demonstrators come to monthly group meetings they begin making new friends. I offer incentives (free stamp sets, etc.) to anyone who demonstrates at our group meetings. Between ideas that new demonstrators get at the meetings, as well as the friends they make, they tend to stick around. Once they get connected, they begin to desire the recognition that comes at the meetings. Soon, they are holding their own events and promoting! Kim Peck Director Livermore, California I invite my demonstrators to my monthly card class for free. They help new stampers and they get energized to see others discover stamping. I also contact them regularly with cards, phone calls, and e-mails. I have a Facebook group where I post pictures of stuff I am making, activities at classes I am having, deals, and ideas. My next “want to” is to provide an e-mail newsletter to my demonstrators. The more excitement I can generate, the more likely they are to pursue the business. Kay Cogbill As most of my new recruits are long distance from me I have created a series of private YouTube video tutorials to help them get up and running with their businesses. Each video deals with ideas to move their business forward, from learning about the demonstrator website, to placing an order, to the Stampin' Start program. I send videos in sets of two and encourage them to watch them, ask questions if needed, and then let me know when they are ready for the next set. This has been highly successful for my team and helps my new recruits on a path to their first promotion. Terri Walker Senior Manager Raleigh, North Carolina First I ENLIGHTEN my new and veteran recruits. I give them lots of information, hints, and ideas. We sit down together to place their first order and go through it step by step. Then I EXCITE them, by my attitude and actions, with the Stampin’ Up! incentives, projects, and rewards. I build up that extra 10% with the order in the first 45 days, Sale-A-Bration, Paper Pumpkin, or whatever is going on. Then I EMPOWER them to succeed! At my monthly demonstrator meeting they take a turn about every three months teaching one project to the group. This gives them practice and builds confidence. When they have questions I direct them to the source of the answer so that they can learn where to find information. Most of all, I help them set their own goals, explore ways to make it happen, and then celebrate their success!
