The Scope E-Newsletter Awards 2012
GSM Awards and Honors
UTGSM Is Proud To Be Among 'The Best'
The Scope Awards Issue is published
each summer as we congratulate our
graduating residents and fellows and
welcome in a new class of physicians
and dentists who are training in one of
our 19 accredited residency and
fellowship programs. In addition to
honoring these doctors, we also
recognize faculty and staff who have
achieved excellence in their teaching,
their research, their leadership or their
service. It is an honor to work side by
side with these professionals to
educate doctors and answer questions
to some of medicine's greatest
complexities. I especially want to
congratulate our seventeen faculty
members who earned promotions this year. This speaks highly of
their commitment to supporting our mission.
I also want to give congratulations to our partner, University
Health System, Inc, and to all who are part of The University of
Tennessee Medical Center. US News and World Report recently
named UT Medical Center as the number one hospital in the region
and the number two hospital in the state, with Vanderbilt
University Medical Center ranked as number one. The 2012-2013
report of "America's Best Hospitals" also nationally ranked two
specialties, Gynecology and Pulmonology, and listed 10 more
specialties as high performers. This report speaks highly of the
caliber of physicians we have teaching at the UT Graduate School
of Medicine and I thank you not only for your commitment to clinical
work but also to education.
James J. Neutens, PhD, FASHA
Dean
Faculty Honored for Teaching and Research
The ninth annual UT Graduate School of Medicine Faculty Awards
were presented by James J. Neutens, PhD, Dean, Eddie Moore, MD,
Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, and Mitchell
Goldman, MD, Assistant Dean for Research, to the following
recipients during the Resident Dinner and Faculty Awards
Presentation June 28 at UT Conference Center. Honorees were
also awarded money to be used for scholarly efforts.
GSM Spirit Award
Mark Rasnake, MD
Assistant Professor and Residency Program Director
Medicine
Dr. Rasnake came to the
UTGSM in 2007 and has
excelled in several areas
including education and patient
care. He trains residents in
multiple departments on
infectious diseases, third- and
fourth-year medical students,
as well as high school students
participating in the Medical
Explorations program. As
program director, Dr. Rasnake
has seen increased in-service
scores each year over the past
three years. With Dr. Kimberly
Morris, Chief of Internal
Medicine, he revamped the
program's curriculum and
revised the resident handbook
with robust teaching
procedures. Benefitting patient care, Dr. Rasnake arranged a
central line process improvement project that has significantly
decreased the rate of central line associated blood stream
infections to zero. He also worked with Dr. Daphne Norwood to
initiate "Monday Morning Quarterback" sessions for safety and
quality improvements. Dr. Rasnake has also received several
awards, including the Department of Medicine's London Award and
the GSM Excellence in Teaching Award.
Dean Neutens said, "The Spirit Award is given to a faculty member
who upholds and promotes the UT Graduate School of Medicine
mission to colleagues, residents, students, staff and the
community. Clearly Dr. Rasnake has accomplished this through his
efforts as program director and to reduce hospital-wide infection
rates."
Excellence in Teaching Award
Amy Barger Stevens, MD
Associate Professor and Residency Program Director
Family Medicine
Dr. Stevens joined Family
Medicine faculty in 2001 and
became Residency Program
Director in 2007. Her
advancements to the program
led to a four-year accreditation
in 2008. She has strengthened
patient continuity of care within
the resident practice,
advocated scholarly activity by
all residents prior to
graduation, and impacted an
increase in resident scores on
academic tests. She also
received the Family Medicine
Teaching Award, given by
residents, in 2005 and 2007.
Resident comments include
"really cares about education
and strives to make improvements to the program continually" and
"very good educator and clinician, very knowledgeable in all areas
of family medicine."
Gregory Blake, MD, Professor and Chair of Medicine said, "I believe
Dr. Stevens's contributions are stellar in the Department of Family
Medicine and that she is very deserving of the Excellence in
Teaching Award."
Excellence in Teaching for Volunteer Faculty Award (Tie)
Paul Crawford, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor
Surgery
Dr. Crawford has been a
volunteer faculty member on
the rural rotation in Morristown,
Tennessee, where fourth-year
residents rotate for three
months at a time. During the
absence of one of the senior
members of his division, Dr.
Crawford took over the
teaching responsibilities while
maintaining a very busy
practice and serving as Chief of
Staff of the MorristownHamblen Health Care System.
During that time, he
demonstrated a high level of
patience in his intraoperative
instruction while demanding
attention and progress by
residents. He has been an
advocate for resident
instruction. Resident comments indicate that they benefit from his
knowledge, wisdom and technical skills as they near the end of the
training.
Dr. Goldman said, "Dr. Crawford is an invaluable asset to the
Department of Surgery by serving as an example of what it means
to be patient-centered, well-informed and professional in surgical
care. He lights the way as residents go out into practice."
Excellence in Teaching for Volunteer Faculty Award (Tie)
Robert Overholt, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Chief of Division of Allergy
Medicine
Dr. Overholt has been a
volunteer instructor in the
Department of Medicine since
1971. He is affectionately
known as "Dr. Bob" to a wide
audience in the Knoxville area
that watches his television
show, in which he is respected
as an expert in allergy and
immunology and educates
listeners on a variety of topics.
His lectures are also always
popular with residents and
attending physicians. Dr.
Overholt is also a previous
recipient of the Department of
Medicine's London Teaching
Award.
Rajiv Dhand, MD, Professor and
Chair of Medicine said, "Dr.
Overholt makes a unique contribution to education. He is richly
deserving of the Excellence in Teaching Award for Volunteer
Faculty."
Excellence and Leadership in Clinical Research Award
Thomas Terrell, MD
Associate Professor
Medicine
Dr. Terrell joined faculty in the
Department of Family Medicine
in 2010 when he was already
working under a two-year
grant to study, "Genetic Risk
Factors for Concussion,
Concussion Severity, and
Neurocognitive Recovery in
Athletes" from the National
Operating Committee for
Standards in Athletic
Equipment. He also received a
grant from the American
Medical Society for Sports
Medicine Foundation for a study
in post-concussion recovery of
college and high school
athletes. Dr. Terrell has mined
data from these two studies
and prepared publications. He has several publications in peerreviewed journals, two of which have been since he joined faculty,
and he has two articles under review. His presentation, "A
Prospective Cohort Study of the Association of Genetic
Polymorphisms and Concussion Risk and Post-concussion Defect in
College Athletes" at the American Medical Society for Sports
Medicine Annual Meeting was highly acclaimed, receiving accolades
from many leaders in sports medicine such as Dr. Jeff Tanji at the
University of California, Davis; Dr. Douglas McKeag, founder of the
organization; and Dr. Bill Baxter, president-elect.
Dr. Blake said, "Dr. Terrell has proven himself to be an asset in the
field of sports medicine and deserves recognition for his efforts to
advance medical knowledge in this important area."
Employees Recognized for Excellence
The UT Graduate School of Medicine recently honored employees
with the sixth annual Employee Excellence Awards program.
Excellence Awards are given to staff members who go beyond the
scope of their jobs by providing outstanding job performance,
courtesy and customer service, community service and leadership.

Pulse.
Excellence in Community Service
Victoria Coy
Administrative Assistant
Family Medicine
Coy has been involved in many
projects that are of service to
Family Medicine, UTGSM and the
Knoxville community. She
helped initiate the Family
Medicine Community Outreach
Committee Food and Clothing
pantries. She actively works to
secure donations from the UT
Medical Center and Knoxville
community, including contacting
area businesses to see if she
can have donation boxes at
their business locations. Coy
took pictures for Family
Medicine's time capsule and at
the groundbreaking event. She
also quit smoking and
participated in a news story
about quitting smoking that
promoted the Medical Center's
smoke-free campus and a "Quit Forever" app created at the UT
Health Science Center.
In nominating Coy, Kandi Hodges, Information Specialist in Health
Information Management and Services said, "I think Vikki is an
excellent example of the Tennessee Volunteer Spirit, and I have
thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her over the past two years."
Excellence in Job Performance
Rick Green
Audio Visual Coordinator
Health Information Management and Services
weekends.
Green's problem solving skills
for audio/visual components
and his technical knowledge
are vast and impressive. In the
past year, he set up a video
feed of a dental procedure and
broadcast it into Wood
Auditorium to a live audience.
Green assembled the resources
necessary to facilitate this
novel event, which included
two-way communication
between the audience and the
dentists completing the dental
procedure. Green is always
available for every meeting
request, including early
mornings, late afternoons and
Alison McNabb, Team Leader of HIMS said, "Rick is one of the most
dependable and consistent employees I have known. He deserves
this award because his work exemplifies stellar performance. This
award allows us to honor Rick’s commitment to the UTGSM and to
formally acknowledge him for a job that is always well done."
Excellence in Courtesy and Customer Service
Missy Maples
Coordinator
Student Affairs
Maples continues to enroll
record numbers of visiting
medical students each year,
improving the services and
opportunities available to them.
She hosts a Match Day
celebration in her home for
students who are in Knoxville
and has hosted other events
for medical students as well.
Maples assists the department
of Graduate Medical Education
as needed, answering phones
when staff are unavailable.
Maples also provides notary
services to UTGSM faculty, staff,
residents and students.
Recently, she received
recognition and gratitude from
a UT Medical Center patient
who Maples assisted when she noticed the patient needed help in
a wheelchair. Rotating medical students have commented, "I want
to thank you for all of your help and support over the last couple of
years," and, "They are very lucky at UTCOM Knoxville to have you
here, and I hope you do know how much we appreciate you."
Of Maples, Eddie Moore, MD, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical
Education said, "Missy continues to demonstrate remarkable
adaptability, flexibility and dependability. The essential services
and assistance required for UTHSC medical students are generally
distributed between at least two or more offices. Missy, however,
has successfully adapted her abilities and skills to provide all of
these services for 225 external learners each year."
Excellence in Leadership
Kim Rose
Coordinator
Family Medicine
Since 2005, Rose has been a
significant help in facilitating
the electronic medical records
system. She has assisted the
Health Information
Management and Services
department many times outside
the scope of her duties and has
often been the person who has
notified management of a
power outage issue before
electronic notifications were
initiated. Rose has spent many
late nights and weekends over
the years helping with EMR
troubleshooting and testing.
She has recently taken on
many new responsibilities
regarding the EMR system and
has a great attitude about it.
Don Peruski, HIMS Systems Manager said, "I am so glad to see Kim
get this recognition. She has been the 'go to' person for me and
my team for a long time for so many things. Thanks, Kim!"
The Employee Excellence Awards are given annually in May, but
nominations are accepted year-round. A complete list of guidelines
as well as the nomination form can be found on The Pulse.
Residents and Fellows Recognized for
Outstanding Research
William Metheny, PhD, Assistant Dean, Graduate Medical and
Dental Education, presented awards to residents and fellows who
participated in the annual UT Graduate School of Medicine Academy
of Scholars Resident and Fellow Research Day at a ceremony May
31. Prizes were awarded in the categories of Original Research
and Case Reports. Presenters and research topics are listed in the
June 2011 issue of The Scope.
Original Research
First Place:
N. Lynn Ferguson, MD
Pathology
"Prognostic Value of Breast
Cancer Subtypes, Ki-67
Proliferation Index, Age, and
Pathologic Tumor
Characteristics on Breast
Cancer Survival in Caucasian
Women"
This research determined that
the triple negative breast
carcinoma subtype, associated
with worse overall prognosis in
comparison to other subtypes
in study populations consisting
of ethnic minorities and young women, might not carry the same
prognostic value for Caucasian women.
Second Place:
Chandler Long, MD
General Surgery
"Amelioration of Skeletal Muscle
Fiber Injury Following Hind Limb
Ischemia in a Type II Diabetic
Mouse Model with PARP
Inhibitor PJ34"
This research determined that
inhibition of an enzyme called
PARP (Poly-ADP ribose
polymerase) reduced the
amount of musculoskeletal
injury seen following an acute
ischemic event. This will
hopefully translate into
improved treatment modalities for patients that have significant
peripheral vascular disease resulting in the loss of blood flow to
their extremities.
Third Place:
W. Jeremy Mahlow, MD
Cardiovascular Disease
"A Peri-Operative Device
Management Algorithm for
Cardiac Implantable Electronic
Devices: the PACED-OP
Protocol"
This research examined the
safety and effectiveness of
using a unique protocol
developed and implemented by
physicians at UT Medical Center
for the management of patients
with pacemakers and other implanted devices who are undergoing
needed surgery. His findings support that this protocol allows
patients to undergo surgery in a safer and more convenient
manner.
Case Reports
First Place:
Ted Chang, MD
Radiology
"PET/CT in the Management of
Y90 Selective Internal Radiation
Therapy (SIRT)"
This study determined standard
PET/CT imaging can quantify
the radiation dose delivered to
patients undergoing internal
radiation therapy so that
subsequent therapy can be
modified accordingly, which, in
the described case, resulted in
complete tumor response.
Second Place:
Andrea Cox, DDS
General Dentistry
"Epidermolysis Bullosa Patients
and Dentistry: A Case Study"
This study concerned a 13year-old female who presented
to the clinic with dental caries,
non-restorable teeth, and
gingivitis and the measures
taken to comfortably perform
dental procedures on the
patient, the unconventional
oral hygiene methods used to
clean her teeth, and the
procedures used to restore her
dentition, along with the longterm dental goals of this patient.

Day May 14. There were a total of seven platform presentations
given by six of the pathology residents.
For the second year, awards were given for "Case of the Month"
Web Case Presentations. Lead by Laurentia Nodit, MD, Assistant
Professor, the program allows residents to choose an interesting
case, gather clinical and radiologic data and present pathologic
findings.
Of the project, Dr. Nodit said, "The ability to take quality gross and
microscopic pictures, describe the findings in a concise manner,
search the literature and summarize the data to support their
interpretation makes this process valuable and unforgettable. Our
department is grateful to the UT Graduate School of Medicine and
Alison McNabb for their support of our project. We hope to
continue this for many years to come."
