This brochure has been designed to help you select your accommodation and plan your visit. A full listing of accommodation (including Hotels, B&Bs, Self Catering, Caravan and Campsites, Hostels and Cruisers) is complemented 2 by details of what to see and do during your stay – you will be spoilt for choice! Fermanagh, situated in the South West of Northern Ireland is easily accessible – only 1 ½ hours from Belfast and 2 hours from Dublin. Often described as ‘the lake district of Northern Ireland’ Fermanagh is best known for its Lakes, Angling, Cruising and Watersports. However, there’s equally as many things to do on dry land where some of Ireland’s best – and most unique attractions can be found - for example, the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark (host to one of Europe’s finest showcaves and one of the first designated Geoparks in Europe) Belleek Pottery (the oldest working pottery in Ireland) and Devenish Island ( one of the finest monastic sites in Northern Ireland) even the bustling market town of Enniskillen has its own claim to fame as being Ireland’s only island town. Fermanagh is studded with many hidden historic treasures. From mysterious Neolithic sites and spectacular ruins of Plantation castles that have weathered rebellions to fine National Trust properties that were home to some of the area’s most prominent families, the county’s various settlers such as Celts, Vikings, Maguire chieftains and the Planters have left a fascinating and richly varied historic legacy for you to discover. Fermanagh is not just about ‘seeing’ – it’s also about ‘doing’! In addition to a wide range of visitor attractions, you’ll be amazed at the great choice of Fermanagh Visitor Information Centre || T: +44 (0) 28 6632 3110 //ABOUT FERMANAGH activity centres where families can enjoy getting involved on the water or on land. With a fantastic number of free public parks, forest walks, bicycle trails as well as some great indoor entertainment you won’t have a minute free. It’s not difficult to keep the kids (and parents) entertained in Fermanagh. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, -there’s always something going on. It’s not just the lovely lakeside Ardhowen Theatre which has a wide-ranging programme of events. There’s lots going on so come to a festival or event which is celebrating everything from cookery to caving, flowers to film, dance to drama, shopping to spas, walking to wakeboarding. There’s always something to share, experience and enjoy. Artists, poets and writers have all been inspired by the beautiful Fermanagh Lakeland but for me, it’s simply my home. I love the unspoilt views, I love the people: I love their quirky customs and their laid back mannerisms; I love Fermanagh…. And so finally, whether you’re bringing with you tons of energy and you want to get out and do things – or whether you’re simply coming to relax and chill out with no deadlines, nor agenda - just have fun. You’ll be among friends! facebook.com/fermanaghlakelands fermanaghlakelands.com Manager of the Fermanagh Visitor Information Centre ■ Purple Flag is the national accreditation scheme for town centres at night. It is the “gold standard” for night time destinations. Like Blue Flag for beaches, places that meet the standards can fly the flag. Purple Flag centres are clean, safe and convivial, with something for everyone. ABOUT FERMANAGH ■ Enniskillen is one of only three towns in Northern Ireland to hold the prestigious Purple Flag award. ■ The award of flags is based on an independent assessment undertaken by trained assessors using a rigorous and comprehensive set of standards for the night time economy. ■ Purple Flag is run by the Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) in partnership with industry, licensees, retailers, central and local government, the police and consumers. ■ The Enniskillen Purple Flag partnership is led by Fermanagh & Omagh District Council and includes representatives from Police, Licensed Trade, Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism and Department for Social Development. @fermanaghlakes #fermanaghlakelands @fermanaghlakes 3 //ABOUT FERMANAGH Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark is located in the rugged mountainous uplands and gently rolling lowlands of Counties Fermanagh and Cavan. There had been significant emigration before this time but the famine unleashed a flood of migrants and their descendants today populate, England, Scotland, Wales, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to name some of the principal destinations. Fermanagh’s population continued to drop and at c55,000 is now one third of what it was. Today, many enthused through the Internet and Family History Societies now like to come to Fermanagh in search of their roots. There are many examples of illustrious Fermanagh descendants around the world such as Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon and John White, Surgeon General of the First Fleet to Australia but, famous or otherwise, much can be found out about your Fermanagh ancestors. Taking on a genealogical search anywhere demands prior research. The degree of help you can be given is often directly in proportion to the information you have personally gleaned and the best results are obtained by finding out in advance the Parish or townland of origin of your ancestors. Your particular family information does not come prepacked ready to be handed across the counter but with a little careful preparation your ancestral past may be revealed. John B. Cunningham M.A. 36 Fermanagh Visitor Information Centre || T: +44 (0) 28 6632 3110 Here you can browse an extensive range of local and family history publications, graveyard inscriptions, some church records and details of what life in Fermanagh was like before your ancestors left. There is no closed season for the coarse angler as Lough Erne and many still waters are open all year round. There are many popular loughs, rivers and f isheries that are easily accessed by visitors. Lough Erne & Lough Melvin being the more well known. Lough Erne Lough Erne is made up of the Upper Lough east of Enniskillen and the Lower Lough which runs west to Belleek. The Lough is a mixed coarse and game fishery. The game angling, in the main, takes place on the Lower Lough although trout are found throughout the system. The Lower Lough is a large expanse of water, over 15 miles long with numerous islands and bays. These provide vast areas of shallow water and rocky shores making for ideal fishing grounds. fermanaghlakelands.com Although a limited number of salmon run the Lough wild brown trout are the quarry and the Lough holds an excellent head of fish. Sitting on the western end of Co. Fermanagh this is one of Ireland’s most famous Loughs. It is home to three distinct species of trout - the magic Sonaghan, the Gillaroo and the Ferox - as well as enjoying a run of spring salmon and grilse. ACTIVITIES - ANGLING The Coarse angler will find some of the finest fishing available in Europe, with bream, roach and hybrids in abundance as well as perch and tench. Fishing starts in February with the arrival of the first salmon and continues through the months with grilse from May to July and wonderful trout fishing throughout the season. Trolling is the most used method for the springers but fly fishing for the Sonaghan and Gillaroo, as well as the Grilse, is excellent. Angling Events A number of angling events take place in Fermanagh throughout the year. The main one being our Classic Fishing Festival, which is one of Europe’s premier fishing festivals with up to 300 anglers from Ireland and Europe taking part.
