English and French are Canada’s official languages, but you’ll find many Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, and hear Japanese, Korean and other languages as you walk down the streets. Find Yourself Richmond is in the Pacific Time Zone with an average altitude of one metre (about a yard) above sea level. Its 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres) of land area are spread out across several islands in the Fraser River delta, with a dynamic urban city centre surrounded by a mix of residential, commercial and industrial property, as well as agricultural space, natural areas, waterways and the Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Bring Sunscreen and an Umbrella Richmond enjoys a temperate coastal climate, with little to no snow and less rain than many West Coast communities – 30% less than neighbouring Vancouver. Average temperatures range from 7°C (45°F) in winter to 23°C (73°F) in summer. Although the climate is mild, weather can change quickly, so plan to dress in layers and bring your sunglasses as well as rain gear. Currency The currency is the Canadian dollar, though many retailers will accept U.S. dollars. Major credits cards are widely accepted in malls and most restaurants, but note that many smaller eateries will only accept cash. You can expect to pay 12% in sales taxes – 7% provincial sales tax (PST) and 5% goods and services tax (GST) – although there is no provincial sales tax added on restaurant meals. Tips of 15 to 20%, before tax, are advised in fine dining restaurants. 46 Vancouver International Airport (YVR) As the gateway to British Columbia, Richmond is easily accessible from just about anywhere in the world.
