Far East Meets
West Coast
Walk through Richmond and it seems as if you’ve been
transported across the Pacific Ocean. Nearly two-thirds of the
population here is of Asian descent – most from China, but also
from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and South Asia –
making Richmond a great destination for exceptional Asian food
and culture.
Here are ten great ways to visit
Asia without boarding a transPacific flight
1 Savour Authentic Eats
Asian traditions meet Canadian ingredients in Richmond to create
one of the most exciting culinary cultures in the world. Every few
steps you’ll stumble upon something irresistibly delicious in the
shops, food courts, and restaurants, especially among the over
200 eateries on Alexandra Road, better known among the locals
as Food Street.
2 Explore the Golden Village
This dazzlingly modern area in Richmond is the heart of Asian
commercial and cultural life. With three Asian malls, Food Street,
and 300-plus shops, services, and restaurants, there’s plenty to
see and do throughout the neighbourhood.
3 Visit the Buddhist Temples
Seek and you may just find enlightenment amid the dramatic
statuary and murals at the massive International Buddhist
Temple on Steveston Highway. Learn even more about this fascinating religion at the Vancouver International Buddhist Progress
Society in the Golden Village.
4 Eat and Shop Your Way through the Night Markets
Throughout Asia, people gather at night markets to eat, shop,
and socialize in a festive atmosphere. This trend has crossed the
Pacific to Richmond, where two night markets dazzle visitors

Along No. 5 Road, the world’s
major religions coexist in harmony and welcome visitors to share
in their spiritual grace. The nearly 20
religious houses include Buddhist and Sikh temples, a mosque, a
Chinese evangelical church, Vedic Cultural Centre and the Tibetan
Thrangu Monastery, the first of its kind in North America.
6 Go Shopping
In Richmond’s three Asian malls – Aberdeen Centre, Parker Place
Mall and Yaohan Centre – you’ll find boutiques selling everything
from trendy Taiwanese fashions to Chinese pottery. A mustsee is the first North American outlet of the Japanese Daiso $2
superstore at Aberdeen Centre.
7 Learn About Medicinal Herbs
Find a cure for what ails you amid the bins of fragrant herbs,
roots, and mysterious-looking dried ingredients used in traditional Chinese medicine. You can even set up an appointment
with an herbalist or acupuncturist at Aberdeen Centre or Parker
Place Mall.

8 Experience a Traditional Tea Ceremony
A Chinese or Japanese tea ceremony is about grace, beauty and
being in the moment. Tea ceremonies are part of many cultural
events in Richmond, but visitors can also learn all about the
tastes and traditions of this fragrant beverage at the Ten Fu Tea &
Ginseng Company in Aberdeen Centre.
9 Stroll through Japanese Gardens
The Japanese were among Richmond’s first non-Aboriginal
residents, farming the land and fishing the sea around Steveston
since 1888. Today, their history and traditions are commemorated in two peaceful places: Kuno Garden in Garry Point Park and
the Japanese Cultural Centre on Moncton Street.
10 Attend Festivals and Celebrations
Richmond is infused with Asian art and culture, especially during
the many festivals held year round. The biggest of these is the
Spring Festival to celebrate the Lunar New Year (Chinese New
Year), with two weeks of feasts, parades and dragon dances. There
are also festivals celebrating Asian food, film, heritage and culture
throughout the year.

picturesque seaside village of Steveston. Historic homes, tempting
eateries and unique boutiques line the streets. Bald eagles and

one of British Columbia’s most popular destinations.
1 Embark on a Whale Watching Excursion
Whale watching is one of the top attractions on the Canadian
West Coast. Book an eco-tour or whale watching expedition

humpback whales. Two local outfitters, Vancouver Whale Watch
and Steveston Seabreeze Adventures, offer tours departing April
through October from the Steveston wharf.
2 Discover National Historic Sites
Once the leading producer of canned salmon in British Columbia, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is now a
popular interactive museum presenting the history of the West
Coast fishing industry through fascinating guided tours and
interactive exhibits. Nearby, Britannia Shipyards National Historic
Site invites visitors to experience what life was like for workers in
Steveston’s fishing industries a century ago.

The Land of Fairy Tales Right
Here in Richmond
Storybrooke, the quiet little town in ABC’s hit TV series Once Upon
a Time, is actually the picturesque village of Steveston in Richmond.
With its heritage buildings and colourful store front signs, it’s
easy for Steveston to bring the magic of fairy tales to life. Many
local businesses appear on TV unchanged, and the “Storybrooke
Country Bread” signage can be seen year round.
Start your journey through Storybrooke at the Tourism Richmond
Visitor Centre (3811 Moncton Street, at the corner of Moncton
Street and First Avenue) to pick up a free self-guided ONCE walking map. You’ll also want to stock-up on official ONCE licensed
merchandise, including an exclusive Welcome to Storybrooke tshirt. Then set out to walk in the footsteps of the show’s big stars

Dining in Richmond is an endless adventure. This multicultural
city’s diversity becomes even more apparent when you explore
Richmond’s incredible array of international cuisines. Chinese,
Indian, American, Greek, Thai, Japanese, Italian, South American –
diners enjoy authentic and delicious culinary styles from across
the globe, without ever leaving Richmond. The city has more than
800 restaurants, half of them Asian and many highly acclaimed.
And of course, you cannot visit Richmond without indulging in
fresh Pacific Northwest seafood.
Richmond’s 10 Essential
Culinary Experiences
Food Street
It’s true, Alexandra Road is only three blocks long – but with its
nearly 200 restaurants tucked into obscure strip malls, locals
have nicknamed this food-lovers’ paradise Food Street. You’ll find
all the fragrant flavours of Cantonese, Sichuan, Shanghainese,
Northern Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean and Malaysian fare,
and everything from tender noodles and savoury hot pot to spicy
curry and frothy bubble tea.
Dim Sum
These delectable little bites are served at Cantonese eateries and
other Chinese restaurants. If you haven’t tried dim sum before,
think of it as Chinese tapas – irresistible dumplings, noodles and
fried snacks – that just happen to be the best way to start the
day. Check out the dim sum cheat sheet on page 18.
Asian Night Markets
Even before you enter Richmond’s two summer night markets
– Richmond Night Market and Panda Market – you’ll smell the
tantalizing aromas wafting from the dozens of food stalls. Try
barbecued meat, crisp bubble waffles, savoury dim sum, sweet
shaved ice and so much more.

Steveston Village
This historic fishing village in Richmond’s sunny southwest
corner is home to a world of great food. Seafood is the specialty
– especially the fish ‘n chips – but there’s something to satisfy
even the pickiest palate, including tapas, pasta, burgers, souvlaki,
sushi and sinfully sweet treats at the many local bakeries.
Family Friendly
Kids of all ages will love Richmond’s selection of accessible,
family-friendly eateries. You’ll find pizza, burgers, fish ‘n chips,
chicken fingers and ice cream at all the best-known Western
Canadian chains like Nando’s, Boston Pizza, and the legendary White Spot, one of British Columbia’s most beloved family
eateries. CF Richmond Centre’s much talked about Dining Terrace
offers convenient quick service restaurants for families and
shoppers in a bright, uniquely designed setting. It features ample
seating, family rooms, and an abundance of high chairs for your
little ones.
Seafood
Home to Western Canada’s largest freshwater commercial
fishing fleet, is it any wonder that Richmond is famous for
its seafood? Local chefs buy fresh mussels, oysters, salmon,
Dungeness crab, prawns and many other types of Pacific
Northwest seafood direct from Fisherman’s Wharf in Steveston.
Pub Fare
Relax at one of Richmond’s cozy pubs. Whether you prefer a
brewpub, Irish pub or gastropub, you can order a burger and a
craft beer, watch the game on TV, and catch up with friends old
and new.
Farm to Table
Surrounded by British Columbia’s best farmland, it’s no wonder
that Richmond restaurants feature local, organic produce, as well
as homegrown beef, pork, poultry and seafood. Ethical, ecofriendly dining never tasted so good.

Your Guide to
Dim Sum
Dim sum is a Chinese tapas-style brunch or lunch with small
plates that are meant for sharing, usually served between 10 am
and 2 pm.
 Plan to go early or make a reservation: Top dim sum spots fill
up quickly and can have long lines during the lunch rush.
 Go in a group: The small plates are meant to be shared, so the
rule of thumb is to order between two-to-three dishes per
person.
Ordering: Many restaurants now feature English menus with
photos of the dishes and have English-speaking staff. If you
get stuck, bring this guide!
 Bring cash: Some restaurants are cash only, particularly on
Food Street.
 Tea comes with: The tradition of dim sum originated in the
ancient teahouses along the Silk Road in Southern China, so
tea is an integral part of the experience. Jasmine is often the
default that comes with dim sum unless specified otherwise.
 Chinese custom: Pour your neighbour’s tea (not your own),
and keep the spout pointing away from diners. When the tea
needs a refill, flip the lid upside down on top of the pot.
Lots to choose from
10 Dim Sum Dishes to Try

translucent, slightly chewy wrappers.
2 Char Siu Sou/BBQ Pork Pastry Puff 叉燒酥: Flaky pastries

that come with barbecued pork, shrimp, Chinese doughnut,
or chicken inside. Be sure to pour soy sauce on top before
serving.
5 Gai Lan/ Chinese Broccoli 中國芥藍: Fresh, thick stalks often
roasted in garlic sauce.
6 Lo Bak Gou /Pan-Fried Chinese Turnip Cake 蘿蔔糕:
A Cantonese specialty. Well-seasoned squares of pan-fried
radish or turnip taste similar to fried potato.
7 Lo Mai Gai /Sticky Rice Steamed in Lotus Leaves 糯米雞:
Seasoned rice with meat in the middle (pork, chicken or
shrimp) that’s wrapped in lotus leaves.
8 Dan Tat /Egg Tarts 蛋撻: Baked flaky pastry crust filled with

at Shanghainese-style dim sum restaurants and every one
does it a bit differently.

Wineries and
Craft Beer
Where to go for a uniquely
Richmond libation
Wineries
Richmond is home to two award-winning wineries – Canada
Berries Enterprise and Lulu Island Winery, the largest winery in
the Vancouver region – and both wineries welcome visitors
for tastings. While these wineries do produce red and white table
wines, Richmond wineries are best known for Icewines and
some of Canada’s best fruit wines, including raspberry
wine, gooseberry wine, blueberry wine, blackcurrant wine, apple
wine and more.
Richmond wineries were the first to produce the region’s famous
blueberry wine. Canada Berries Enterprise also produces fruit
and berry syrups, wine jellies, and honey collected from bees in
its own fields. Lulu Island Winery is known as one of the most
exceptional makers of Icewine – a sweet, complex, productionintensive wine for which only three countries on the planet have
the right climate. Canadian Icewine is prized around the world,
and Lulu Island Winery is BC’s largest exporter of Icewine and the
world’s largest exporter of Icewine to China.

Craft Beer
Show up for the burger, stay for the beer. From local craft
beers to premium imports, great beer can be found in every
corner of Richmond. In 2015, the city welcomed another craft
brewery, Fuggles & Warlock. Try the deliciously creamy Bean Me
Up Espresso Stout. Also on the list of Richmond’s destinationworthy beers is the Fairmont Honey Lager from the Fairmont
Vancouver Airport Hotel’s Jetside Bar. This uniquely Richmond
concoction featuring home-grown honey in an exclusive lager
made in partnership with the Whistler Brewing Company, a local
BC brewer. Another must try craft brewery is BRB Co. Brewery,
producer of fine ales; their IPA has notes of lychee and is one of
their most popular beers.
A booming craft-brew movement wouldn’t be complete without
a local beer festival. The fourth annual Steveston Beer Fest returns on August 27, 2016 from 7pm to 9pm at the Gulf of Georgia
Cannery National Historic Site, and hosted byO’Hare’s GastroPub
& Liquor Store.

Spirituality
Experience the Highway
to Heaven
No. 5 Road is one of several wide, flat throughways that cut
across Richmond. What makes this one unique is that it’s lined
with some 20 religious establishments that coexist in peace
and harmony. Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and
Sikh houses of worship share the road that’s been dubbed the
Highway to Heaven.
You are invited to embark on a self-driven spiritual sightseeing tour to visit the religious establishments on the Highway
to Heaven. Stop and gaze at the architecture and adornments
from the outside or, if the building is open, you may look around
inside. There are often members who are willing to talk to visitors
about their faith and even extend an invitation for you to chant,
meditate or attend a ceremony.
Listen to the Buddhist monks chanting at the Thrangu
Monastery; participate in a Vedic Ashtanga yoga class at the
Vedic Cultural Centre, a Hindu spiritual awareness centre. Enjoy
a free vegetarian meal (called langar) at the Nanaksar Gurdwara
Gursikh Sikh Temple. Marvel at the magnificent courtyard and
the 1,000 white porcelain statues of Buddha at the Ling Yen
Mountain Temple. Take in the beautiful gardens, golden statues
and ornamental fountains of the International Buddhist Temple,
the second largest Buddhist temple in North America.
22
International Buddhist Temple
There is no charge to drop in and visit the temples in Richmond, but
donations are appreciated. Your head must be covered and shoes
removed at some of the places of worship. All of the establishments on No.5 Road are private religious organizations so be sure
to double check times, customs and protocols before visiting.

Shop, Eat and Party
Under the Stars
Richmond is home to two Asian-style night markets that are
open all summer long. On busy weekends, crowds of 20,000
people gather at both the Panda Market and the Richmond Night
Market to eat, shop and socialize in a festive atmosphere. Bring
cash, a hearty appetite, and be sure to sample these must-try
delicacies, available at both markets:
Hurricane Potatoes: Also known as Tornado Fries, Twister
Potatoes or Rotato, this is a whole russet potato cut in a spiral,
then deep-fried and sprinkled with your choice of seasoning.
Top Left: Hurricane Potatoes, Bottom Left: Richmond Night Market, Right: Seafood
Bring a hearty appetite
Asian-style Kebabs: The most famous skewer stand is Xin Jiang
Man BBQ in the Richmond Night Market, where Chef James
cooks up spicy lamb and honey garlic prawns while entertaining
the crowds with his hilarious friendly chatter.
Bakudanyaki: A Japanese treat, this baseball-sized savoury fritter is stuffed with meat, vegetables and/or cheese, then topped
with a curry, wasabi, chili or creamy original sauce.
Grilled Squid: Like the Hurricane Potato, this is one of the most
popular snacks at the market - tender, toothsome, a little salty,
a little spicy, and utterly delicious. Also available deep-fried.
Mango Slush: Fruit slushies make for a refreshing palate cleanser.
Try the ones made with fresh mango, ice, milk, coconut milk and
just a touch of sugar. Dairy-free versions are also available.
Bubble Waffles: A light egg batter is poured into an iron that
forms it into bubbles for a crunchy exterior and chewy middle.
The chocolate flavour is highly recommended.

and Play
From exploring the great
outdoors to discovering new
cultures, this vibrant city
has something for all ages,
interests, and abilities.
Whale Watching
Just off Richmond’s shores, Orcas, humpbacks and grey whales
play in the Pacific waters. Take a whale watching or eco-tour and
head out to sea aboard a Zodiac or cruiser. You will have a chance
to encounter these majestic mammals as well as porpoises, sea
lions, bald eagles and other wildlife. Bring your camera! You might
even catch a glimpse of the rare superpod, which occurs when all
three local pods come together in a group totaling more than 80
orca whales.
Family Geocaching
If the thought of tracking down hidden treasures pique your kids’
interests, try geocaching – a family-friendly outdoor treasure
hunting game that uses a smartphone or GPS device. Richmond
has 30 hidden geocaches in parks, on trails and at community
facilities throughout the city. Participants navigate to a specific
set of GPS coordinates to find the prize – a hidden geocache
container with a secret word. Before starting the search, download a Geo-Quest passport or pick up a copy from the Richmond
Nature Park. All details, along with the downloadable passport,
are available at www.richmond.ca/geocaching.

Terra Nova Park
Historic Attractions
Steveston is the ideal place to explore the maritime fishing roots
in BC. Join one of the guided tours at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery
National Historic Site to experience how the cannery must have
looked and sounded during its years of operation from 1894 to
1979. Walk the salmon canning line to learn the fascinating history of salmon canning on the West Coast. The nearby Britannia
Shipyards National Historic Site displays restored heritage boat
works, bunkhouses, and homes that show how locals lived and
worked in the early 20th century. Then, visit London Heritage
Farm to enjoy a full tea service and discover farmhouse life in
Richmond during the 1880s.
Parks and Playgrounds
Best. Playground. Ever. That’s how kids describe Richmond’s
$1-million playground in beautiful Terra Nova Park. There’s a
maze of tractor tires and paddock fence, a playhouse perched in
the trees, a double zip-line, hammock swings, and trampolines
as well as natural elements like the slough, hedgerow, fields and
ditches. Nearby, Larry Berg Flight Path Park is perfect for plane
spotting with the kids as it’s located directly in line with the
end of the south runway at YVR. Information boards describe
some of the identifying features to look for so that even novice
plane spotters can identify the aircraft overhead. Then there’s
Richmond Nature Park, where a pedestrian boardwalk leads you
through this remarkable peat bog habitat that is just a small example of the terrain that once covered much of Richmond. Picnic
sites are nearby and it’s free to visit.

Live Entertainment and Theatre
Over the past few decades, Richmond has gained a reputation
for high-quality live theatre and entertainment. Visitors come
from all over the world to play the odds at the four-diamond
River Rock Casino Resort, with its slot machines, table games
and high-limit VIP rooms. This state-of-the art venue also hosts
entertainment headliners at the River Rock Show Theatre, which
features a terrific lineup of non-stop entertainment, including
celebrity comics and musicians. The Gateway Theatre, a live
performance venue overlooking beautiful Minoru Park, is home
to musicals, comedies and dramas – from classics to world premieres. It is one of the best regional theatres in Canada and has
been winning standing ovations since 1984.
Plan your Escape
Your mission: enter the room, find the clues, and use them to
escape, all within 45 minutes. That’s the concept behind escape
games, a hot trend in Asia that’s quickly caught on here in
Richmond too. There are multiple escape game venues throughout the city, all with different rooms, different themes, and
different degrees of difficulty. A few places to try this are Xcape
or Exit Canada.

Plan Your
Trip
Before you visit this
vibrant city, here’s what
you should know
Meet the Locals
Richmond has a population of approximately 210,000, with 65%
of its citizens of Asian descent. English and French are Canada’s
official languages, but you’ll find many Mandarin and Cantonese
speakers, and hear Japanese, Korean and other languages as you
walk down the streets.
Find Yourself
Richmond is in the Pacific Time Zone with an average altitude
of one metre (about a yard) above sea level. Its 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres) of land area are spread out across several
islands in the Fraser River delta, with a dynamic urban city centre
surrounded by a mix of residential, commercial and industrial
property, as well as agricultural space, natural areas, waterways
and the Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
Bring Sunscreen and an Umbrella
Richmond enjoys a temperate coastal climate, with little to no
snow and less rain than many West Coast communities – 30%
less than neighbouring Vancouver. Average temperatures range
from 7°C (45°F) in winter to 23°C (73°F) in summer. Although the
climate is mild, weather can change quickly, so plan to dress in
layers and bring your sunglasses as well as rain gear.
Currency
The currency is the Canadian dollar, though many retailers will
accept U.S. dollars. Major credits cards are widely accepted in
malls and most restaurants, but note that many smaller eateries will only accept cash. You can expect to pay 12% in sales
taxes – 7% provincial sales tax (PST) and 5% goods and services
tax (GST) – although there is no provincial sales tax added on
restaurant meals. Tips of 15 to 20%, before tax, are advised in fine
dining restaurants.

Once you’ve arrived safely by air, YVR has buses, taxis, rental
cars, limousines, and hotel shuttles. The Canada Line is Metro
Vancouver’s rapid transit rail system connecting YVR to central
