A detailed schedule of events will be available on the website in mid-July. Please confirm your attendance at the International Student Orientation online at the OIS website: (http://ter.ps/OISOrient). International Student Orientation will be held August 26-30, 2013. Orientation includes (*indicates a required session): • Introduction to the Academic System at the University of Maryland* • Visa and Immigration Status* • Immunization Clearance* • Health Insurance and Health Care • Welcome Reception Some graduate school orientation programs may conflict with the OIS Orientation program. If you have such a conflict, you should attend your departmental program and include OIS sessions as time allows. Should you miss one of the required sessions noted above, you will need to make arrangements for a make-up session. The entire Orientation schedule, including locations, will be posted on our web site in mid-July. Bring the following documents (and copies of them) with you for the entire Orientation program: your admission materials, passport, immigration forms (e.g. I-20/DS-2019), proof of immunization, and a description of any coursework you would like to transfer to your degree at the University of Maryland. Welcome Check-In You must attend one Welcome Session where we will collect copies of your immigration documents. If you arrive to the area before Orientation activities begin, you may attend a Welcome Session. You must bring the documents listed above to the Welcome Session. A Welcome Session is also offered during Orientation week. For dates, times, and registration, please refer to the International Student Orientation website, http://ter.ps/OISOrient. Directory ID/Student Identification Number In order to gain access to University resources, it is important to select your UM Directory ID. To begin this process, you will need your Student Identification Number (SID). Your SID is either your Social Security number (SSN) or a UM generated number. Graduate degree students can find this number on the Application Supplemental Form (ASF) in section 1: Verify Contact Information. Housing For off-campus housing information, please visit http://www.och.umd.edu. Health Insurance All J-1 students are required to carry health insurance while attending the University of Maryland, and it is highly recommended for F-1 graduate students. We offer health insurance that is economical, convenient, and meets all U.S. government requirements. If your sponsor has already provided insurance for you, please bring a copy in English that describes the coverage. Parking for Orientation You may park without a permit during Orientation in any numbered lot except 15. I-20/DS-2019 Document You are expected to attend the school that is specified on the I-20/DS-2019 that you use to enter the US. Therefore, when you enter the US, it is important to use the I-20 or DS-2019 provided by the University of Maryland, College Park. Early Arrival If you arrive before the first day of Orientation and need assistance, please report to OIS on the third floor of Susquehanna Hall. We are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Check the OIS website for Welcome Sessions scheduled prior to Orientation. Only students receive an I-20. The form is published by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service and is prepared by the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) for students who have been admitted to our campus. Generally, new students receive this form in their home countries and take it to a U.S. consulate when they apply for an F-1 visa. At Question 2 on the form, you can find the name of the university who issued you that I-20; for UMCP students, University of Maryland, College Park, must be indicated here. Questions 3 and 4 indicate the degree and course of study of the student and the time frame in which the I-20 is valid. F-1 (student) Visa The F-1 visa is the most often used visa by international students to study at an accredited U.S. college, university, or English language institute. Students on F-1 visas come to the United States for a full degree program. For more detailed information on the F-1 visa, please use the following link: travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html. IF YOU ARE A J-1 STUDENT: Form DS-2019 Form DS-2019 is a document that supports a J-1 visa. The form is published by the U.S. Information Agency and is prepared for students or scholars by the university or organization that is acting as sponsor. Generally, foreign visitors receive the DS-2019 in their home countries and take it to a U.S. consulate when they apply for a J-1 visa. Question 3 on the form shows the period for which the DS-2019 is valid. Question 4 will identify whether the holder is a student, a professor, a research scholar, or a short-term scholar. Other options are available; these are the most commonly seen categories at UMCP. J-1 (exchange visitor) Visa The J-1 visa is used for educational and cultural exchange programs at the University of Maryland. Students on J1 visa typically come to the United States to study for a shorter period of time – one to two semesters. For more detailed information on the J-1 exchange visitor visa, please use the following link: travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1267.html Health Insurance Requirements for J-1 Exchange Visitors Exchange Visitors (J-1 visas) in the United States must carry health insurance for themselves and their J-2 dependents for the full duration of their J program. U.S. government regulations stipulate that if Exchange Visitors willfully fail to carry health insurance for themselves and their dependents, the J-1 sponsor must terminate the program and report the termination to the Department of State. In addition to the deductible, coinsurance, and exclusions, the Department of State has established the following requirements for the type and amounts of coverage you must carry if you hold J-1/J-2 status: The policy must provide benefits of at least $50,000 for each accident or illness. Insurance companies cover no more than the policy-holder’s expenses, minus a deductible and co-pay In the event of your death while you are in the U.S., the policy must provide at least $7,500 in benefits to send your remains to your home country for burial If you must be sent home on the advice of a doctor due to a serious illness or injury, the policy must pay up to $10,000 for the expenses of your travel Page 1 of 3 The policy may establish a waiting period before it covers pre-existing conditions (health problems that you had before you bought the insurance), as long as the waiting period is reasonable by current standards in the insurance industry The policy must be backed by the full faith and credit of your home country government or the company providing the insurance must meet minimum rating requirements established by USIA For more information on health insurance requirements for J-1/J-2 visa holders, how insurance works, and how to choose an insurance policy, please visit the IES website at: www.international.umd.edu/ies/123 Information for Both F-1 and J-1 Students: What Exactly Is a Visa? A visa is a document that is placed into your passport and allows you to request permission from an Immigration officer at a port-of-entry (usually at an airport) to enter the United States. The visa itself does not guarantee admission into the U.S. – all other documents must be in order as well. The procedure to enter the U.S. is covered in more detail further down this page. Visa Application Steps 1. Schedule a visa appointment/interview. To do this, you will need to contact the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country. Please use the following website to locate this Embassy/Consulate: usembassy.state.gov. Keep in mind that the wait for a visa appointment can sometimes be months, so please plan ahead. To see a list of visa appointment wait times, please visit the following website: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/wait/tempvisitors_wait.php Also note that you may not receive a U.S. visa no more than 120 days before the reporting date on your I-20/DS-2019. 2. Receive the I-20/DS-2019. Once you are admitted to UMCP, IES will be processing a visa-qualifying document for you. If you will be studying as an F-1 student, you will receive a Form I-20. If, instead, you will be studying as a J-1 exchange student, you will receive a Form DS-2019. These forms are necessary for your visa application and interview. 3. Pay the SEVIS fee. When you receive your I-20/DS-2019, you will have to pay a $100 SEVIS fee by going to the following website: www.fmjfee.com This is a fee that Immigration charges for the making of your SEVIS record and you must pay it and have proof that you paid it for your visa interview. 4. Attend your scheduled visa appointment. You should take the following documents with you: Form I-20 or DS-2019 A completed visa application form (available at the Embassy’s website) A passport valid for at least 6 months or more Financial support documentation (no older than 2 months) Proof that you paid the SEVIS fee & visa application fees Your admission letter from the University of Maryland (recommended, not required) Proof of home country ties, including but not limited to: proof of property ownership, bank accounts, significant family in your home country, a job offer in your home country upon completion of your U.S. studies (you may or may not be asked about this – but it is always good to be prepared) What Next? If all goes according to plan, you will receive an F-1 or J-1 visa stamp in your passport. Congratulations! Some U.S. Embassies actually put your I-20/DS-2019 in a sealed envelope and staple it to your passport. It is Page 2 of 3 recommended that you do not open this envelope. The Immigration officer at the U.S. port-of-entry (POE) will open it and check your documents when you arrive. Check your visa for errors before you leave the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. You may not enter the U.S. on your F-1 or J-1 visa more than 30 days prior to the report date on your I-20/DS2019. If you received a late visa appointment and will not be able to enter the U.S. by the report date on your I20/DS-2019, please contact IES as soon as you know this information so that we may defer this date on your I20/DS-2019 so that you are not turned away at the POE. I-94 Card On your flight to the U.S., a flight attendant will hand you a Form I-94 to fill out. This is a very important Immigration form, so please be sure to fill it out neatly and correctly. You should write your name on the I-94 card just as it is displayed in your passport. At the port-of-entry, an Immigration officer will look over your Immigration documents and ask you several questions about your stay in the U.S. S/he will staple a portion of the I-94 card into your passport. This card shows when and where you entered the U.S., in what status, and for how long your stay is valid. Do not lose this card! It costs $160 to replace it! NEG About Meningococcal Vaccine IMMUNIZATION RECORD A Meningococcal Vaccine is available for protection against most strains of the bacteria that causes meningitis. Meningitis is inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord that is fatal in 10 – 15 percent of the cases. Although the disease is rare, college students living in dormitories and individuals with weak immune systems can be more susceptible to the disease. The immunization requires one injection in the arm and is 85 – 90 % protective against strains A, C, Y and W-135, but not type B. Most meningococcal diseases in the U.S. are caused by types B or C. MENINGITIS VACCINE WAIVER I understand that under Maryland Law, students enrolled in a Maryland institution of higher education and who reside in on-campus student housing are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal disease, or may seek exemption from this law. Regretfully, we have too many incoming students to meet each one of you at the airport. Listed below are directions from each area airport. Travel from Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) is likely to be easiest. Taxis may be available at any of the three airports, but it will cost between $50-$100, depending on the distance of the airport to campus. Provided below are less expensive options. • Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). There is a commercial bus (Super Shuttle) which provides ground transportation service to the College Park campus. The cost is $23 and the bus will take you to any part of campus. Check at the Ground Transportation Booth in Pier C of the airport for more information and to purchase tickets. The Super Shuttle is a 24-hour service; however, the Ground Transportation Booth is only open from 5:30 am to 2:00 am. If you are willing to carry your luggage a little more in order to pay a little less, you may want to take the “B30 Greenbelt-BWI Airport Express Line” Metrobus to travel to campus. You can find information on www.wmata.com/timetables/md/b30.pdf. The fare for the bus is $3.00. From BWI Airport you will take the B30 southbound to the Greenbelt Metro station which is on the green line; get on a metro train to the next stop: College Park/U of MD. The metro fare will be less then $2.00. Monday through Friday there is a free shuttle bus service from the College Park station to campus. This service runs every 15 minutes from 6:45 am to 8:00 pm. From 8:00 pm to 12:00 am it runs every half hour. • National Airport. There is a metro stop at National Airport and the Metro runs until midnight every day. The metro stop is located on the concourse level of terminals B and C. Should you arrive at terminal A, exit the terminal and board any “Airport Shuttle Bus”. Exit the bus at the stops for Parking Garage B and C and there will be access through a bridge to the station. Take the yellow line train in the direction of Mt. Vernon Square to the Gallery Place Metro station. Get off the yellow line train and on the same platform board a green line train in the direction of Greenbelt. You will get off the green line train at the College Park/U of MD station. Monday through Friday there is a free shuttle bus service from the College Park station to campus. This service runs every 15 minutes from 6:45 am to 8:00 pm. From 8:00 pm to 12:00 am it runs every half hour. • Dulles International Airport. Dulles is the farthest airport from the campus. You may use the express bus service (Washington Flyer) to get to the nearest Metro station. Washington Flyer departs every 30 minutes from approximately 6 am to 10 pm, costs $8 and will take you the West Falls Church Metro station. Take the orange line train in the direction of New Carrolton and get off at the L’Enfant Metro. Go upstairs and board a green line train in the direction of Greenbelt. You will get off the green line train at the College Park station. The metro fare will be less then $4.00. Monday through Friday there is a free shuttle bus service from the College Park station to campus. This service runs every 15 minutes from 6:45 am 8:00 pm. From 8:00 pm to 12:00am it runs every half hour. If you are willing to carry your luggage a little more in order to pay a little less, you may want to take the “5A DC-Dulles Line” to travel to campus. You can find information on www.wmata.com/timetables/dc/5a.pdf. The fare for the bus is $3.00. From Dulles Airport you will take the 5A eastbound to the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station on the green line; get on a metro train in the direction of Greenbelt to the College Park/U of MD metro station. The cost for the metro will be less then $3.00. Monday through Friday there is a free shuttle bus service from the College Park station to campus. This service runs every 15 minutes from 6:45 am to 8:00 pm. From 8:00 pm to 12:00 am it runs every half hour.
