The Allan Kardec Spiritist Center (Ponto de Luz)
resulted from a group that was founded in 1990, by
Genoveva Rodrigues, Conceição Durval, Vilma
Garcia e Norma Guimaraes. It was also the result of
a group of people that started meeting in the 80’s
at the basement of the church San Francis of Assisi,
in NYC at 33rd street, next to the Madison Square
Garden.
The group was composed of Mrs. Luzia Almeida,
Marcelo Almeida, João Zério, professor at the
University of Phoenix. They continued their
gatherings, once a week, to study Spiritism in
English until some of the members moved to
another state. Marcelo continued the meetings
every Friday at 6:30 p.m., the last Fridays of the
month were dedicated to mediumship meetings.
Later the meeting changed from English to
Portuguese and more people started attending. It
was when AKDS was officially founded in 1990.
AKES
In 1984 a small group of friends decided to give a
formal character to the activities they started in
1980. Thus the Allan Kardec Educational Society
was founded in Philadelphia to promote the Spiritist
philosophy in the United States.
\
The founding members were the brothers Marcelo,
Leonardo, and Jose de Almeida, Maria Hanna, Ed
de Melo, Ellie and Gene Hart, and John Zerio. The
Spiritist philosophy had until then only one working
cell in the United States outside of Florida, the
Christian Spirit Center, founded by Mr. Salim
Haddad and Evelyn Morales.
The speaking tours by Divaldo Franco became
annual events of Spring for the AKES' team. in High
Point, North Carolina.
In 1992 AKES sponsored the first meeting of the
Vision 2000 project with 23 delegates from seven
states - Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., New Jersey,
New
York,
Florida,
California,
Connecticut,
Massachussets and for Canada.

The Perfect Medium includes images from the 1860s to the 1960s. In addition
to photographs depicting spirit mediums, séances, ghosts and ectoplasm, this
book includes photographs of "fluids" and auras that tread the line between
scientific experimentation and abstract art. There are camera-less thought-ographs that appear to show glowing shapes and other-worldly faces in a swarm
of bubbles. Levitations are recorded, too -- both in the form of leaping mediums
caught in mid-air, and objects like folding snack tables that are supposedly
defying gravity.
