Hand-woven wonders of Himachal Pradesh

ince the third and second millennium BC, Himachal
witnessed diverse communities, from the Aryans to the British, who
influenced its art forms. Even those who neighboured it, like the
Chinese, wielded influence.
An expression of the human spirit in material form, a joy to use and a
delight to gift, the handlooms of Himachal are fascinating. A splendid
interplay of fibres, patterns and colours handed down from
generation to generation...such are the handloom creations of
Himachal.
In Himachal Pradesh, the land of mountains, valleys, rivers and
meadows with a population of about 65 lacs, weavers create a range of
handlooms that have won over the hearts of millions. No child
labour is employed in the creation of handicrafts and
handlooms.
The Kullu Shawls and Stoles are certified by the Geographical
Indication Registry as endemic arts and the H.P. State
Handicrafts & Handloom Corporation is registered under the
Handloom Mark scheme.
For the hill folk of Himachal, agriculture is the main economic
activity followed by creation of traditional handlooms which are in
tandem with nature and ideas are given form from naturally available
material.
The Himachal Pradesh State Handicrafts & Handloom Corporation
Ltd. shoulders the responsibility of fostering and promoting the
handlooms & handicrafts of the State. The Corporation ensures the
overall welfare of weavers by imparting training and giving them
design inputs. The Corporation also provides assistance in
procurement of raw material and in marketing of their finished
products.
Apace with changing trends and preferences, the Design and
Development Unit of the Corporation plays a key role in evolving
new designs.
