SUMMERSPACE Summer Camps for Girls entering Grades 5-8 BUFFALO ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART 2016 genres of podcasts, learn what makes a great podcast, and then write, star in, and edit a podcast of your very own using a variety of digital tools. No experience necessary. This camp will also be offered 7/11-15. Camps SUMMERSPACE Week 1 Service Camp 1 & 2 - FULL Weeks 1–5 Western New York Catholic School Summer Band The Paul Effman Music Service runs band programs at several Catholic Elementary Schools and is offering a Summer Band program for boys and girls entering grades 4-8. One year of band experience is recommended. The program will focus on a combination of small group instruction and full ensemble rehearsals. A wide variety of music will be performed. FIVE WEEK SESSION, TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS, 3:30–5:30 P.M., BEGINNING JULY 12 Separate application required, please visit www.pemusic.com Spend a week sharing your time and talents by volunteering at a variety of agencies throughout Western New York. Each day we will volunteer at a different service site and learn about each organization. This is a great opportunity to explore our gifts and talents and to give back and make a difference in the community. Some possible service sites include: Canine Helpers for the Handicapped, Rainbow K School, American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, and Weinberg Campus. Maximum enrollment is 13 girls. Camp is open to girls entering grades 6-8. JUNE 27-JULY 1, AM CAMP Instructor: Maria Clare, SHA Religion teacher and Campus Minister 2nd camp 12:30 - 3:30 Introduction to Lacrosse This camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game, emphasizing basic skills, techniques and concepts. You will learn and practice basic to intermediate stick skills including cradling, passing, catching and shooting drills. In addition, you will learn offensive and defensive techniques and JUNE 27 – JULY 1, PM CAMP Instructors: Averill Earls & Sarah Handley-Cousins, The History Buffs Podcast (historybuffs.org) engage in daily scrimmages. Equipment needed: mouth guard, lacrosse goggles and stick (SHA has a limited amount of sticks for those who don’t own one).Team play will be highlighted as well as individual play. JULY 27- JULY 1, AM CAMP Instructor: Kristina Hartman, SHA Varsity Lacrosse coach Musical Theatre FULL Spend a week learning about live theatre and how to become a part of it. You will learn many different aspects of theatre, including movement, dance, voice and acting, as well as other technical and creative components such as costumes, set design and make-up. Each day you will participate in a series of activities which will prepare you for a performance piece to be presented on the final day of the program. JUNE 27 – JULY 1, AM CAMP Instructor: Terri Filips, SHA Musical Director & Associate Theatre Professor, Niagara University Introduction to Podcasting Calling all storytellers, writers, technology-inclined visionaries, future historians, journalists and media personalities! During this camp you will explore the many Catholic High School Entrance Examination Prep Course FULL Prepare yourself for the entrance exam in November. Learn strategies for test taking along with review in each section. Girls will take a practice exam on the final day. (This course will also be offered October 15-November 5.) JUNE 27 – JULY 1, PM CAMP, GIRLS ENTERING GRADE 8 ONLY Instructors: Tina Gilbert, SHA Math teacher, and Eileen Maloney, SHA English teacher S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) Camp Explore the fields of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Each day will revolve around one of these topics and include a fun activity. This camp will challenge your mind and highlight the power of female ingenuity! JUNE 27 – JULY 1, PM CAMP Instructors: TBD Week 2 Leadership Camp FULL This program encourages young women to explore and practice skills in the 5 B’s of Leadership: Becoming a young adult leader, Belonging to a community called school, Believing in God and one’s own self, Building relationships and Bettering our world. If you would like to be considered for admission to this program please attach a letter of interest and/or a recommendation from a teacher or principal with the application. Each participant is eligible for a $200 tuition credit to Sacred Heart Academy upon registration at Sacred Heart for the 2017-18 school year. JULY 5–8, 9 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. GIRLS ENTERING GRADE 8 ONLY Instructor: Maria Clare ‘95, SHA Religion teacher & Campus Minister Science Camp Interested in all kinds of science? This camp will explore different science concepts within the lab in a fun and exciting way. Activities to include making soap (and the science behind it), edible chemistry experiments, and other sustainable projects to learn about recycling and reusing every day materials. JULY 5-8, AM CAMP Instructor: Melanie Whitney ‘96, SHA Science teacher Dance Camp FULL So you think you can dance? Or would like to learn? We will explore tap, jazz, ballet, modern and lyrical styles of dance. Increase your technical skills and also explore your creativity through improvisation and the creation of your own choreography. This is a great opportunity to explore different styles of dance. All week we will create different arts and crafts, utilizing a variety of techniques and resources. JULY 5-8, PM CAMP Instructor: Riley Stepnick, SHA Music teacher Week 3 CSI at SHA FULL Do you like solving problems? This camp will introduce you to the world of forensic science and will take a behind-the-scenes look at crime investigations and uncover a series of “who dunits” using current forensic techniques. During the week you will examine fingerprints and hair and other evidence such as DNA to identify the criminal. You will be presented with a mock crime scene and use your newly acquired forensic skills to solve the case and write up your story of what happened. It is really fun! JULY 11-15, AM CAMP Instructor: Sr. Mara Walton, SHA Science teacher Basketball Camp This camp will help you develop your skills and improve your basketball abilities with emphasis on fundamentals. You will be involved in games, drills and various skill contests throughout the week, according to your age and ability. JULY 11-15, AM CAMP Coach: Sarah Pawlak ‘11, Assistant SHA Varsity Basketball Coach (SHA is the 2016 CHSAA Class A State Basketball Champion) Introduction to Podcasting Calling all storytellers, writers, technology-inclined visionaries, future historians, journalists, and media personalities! The ukulele is fun and easy to learn! Over the course of this camp you will learn everything from string names to tablature to strumming as well as the history and culture of Hawaiian music. No experience necessary. We will provide the ukuleles which will be available for purchase after the camp. JULY 11-15, PM CAMP Instructor: Riley Stepnick, SHA Music teacher Introduction to Ceramics/Pottery Learn about the basics of ceramics as you explore a variety of building techniques. Experiment with the various qualities of clay, and create both functional and sculptural work. You will have a chance to throw on the wheel and create a bowl or plate. You will be able to take home all your projects, and will learn about glazing. No experience necessary. JULY 11-15, PM CAMP Instructor: Tina Vu, Ceramic Artist Week 4 Cooking Camp #1 FULL Have you always wanted to learn how to cook and make meals for your family? Learn how with chef Jill Forster of Nickel City Cheese & Mercantile. This unique, hands-on learning experience will take place at Artisan Kitchens & Baths (on Amherst Street in Buffalo, transportation provided to and from Sacred Heart), with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. You will learn the basics of cooking and spend one day creating desserts. Space is limited! JULY 18-22, AM CAMP Instructor: Jill Forster, Owner, Nickel City Cheese & Mercantile Cheerleading Camp If you are interested in cheerleading or have ever been a part of a cheer team then this is the perfect camp for you. We will practice basic skills and beginners level stunting techniques that will prepare you to be a strong member of a team. By the end of the week you will have participated in the creation of a full cheerleading routine. No experience necessary! JULY 18-22, AM CAMP Coach: Chelsea Zogaria, SHA Varsity Cheerleading Coach Jewelry Making 101 FULL Would you like to pick up a new hobby and learn how to make your own jewelry? This camp will teach you all the fundamentals of jewelry making including how to use chain, wire, different types of knotting cords and leather. You will make several trendy pieces throughout the week that will give you the skills you need to become designers and create your very own jewelry! JULY 18-22, AM CAMP Instructor: Samantha Hoar ‘12 Introduction to Digital Photography—Portraits of Self and Psyche FULL In this week-long workshop we will explore what it means to make a portrait - of the self and others. We will begin with a quick survey of portraiture (in various media) in a power point presentation and discussion. Camera and lighting techniques will be reviewed before you begin to make your own portraits. The class will culminate with each student producing four portraits of themselves – traditional and/ or abstract – and make them into an accordion book. JULY 18-22, PM CAMP Instructor: Nancy J. Parisi, Freelance Photographer & Journalist Volleyball FULL This camp is designed to meet the needs of both beginning and intermediate players. As a beginning player, you will learn the basics of volleyball including passing, setting, hitting and serving, and an introduction to team play. If you have experience you will further develop your team skills with a volleyball player who has already mastered the basics. In addition, we will teach offensive and defensive tactics through drills and scrimmages. Escape Rooms are becoming very popular because they are fun, challenging, and require the participants to use their brains. Escape games are a type of physical adventure in which you are “locked” in a room with other participants and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit. We will start this week by taking a field trip to an Escape Room where we’ll work as a team to try to escape. Then we will plan and create our own escape room experience. We will come up with challenging puzzles and clues and stage our own room with a theme including props, etc. On Friday, family and friends will be invited to come and try to escape our room! Maximum enrollment is 12 girls. JULY 25-29, PM CAMP Instructor: Ruth Donner, SHA faculty member Studio Art Camp FULL Learn the basics of drawing, painting and other skills of art in this studio art camp. You will learn the fundamentals of art and take inspiration from many different types of art and artists. This camp will emphasize basic skills, techniques, and concepts in art. You will learn and practice skills including composition, perspective, value, color and lighting. There will be acrylic painting, watercolor painting, colored pencil drawing and more.
