Salisbury Live ‘09 is shaping up very nicely and is probably the most diverse and
exciting yet!! We have some old favourites
back plus there are additional, select events
taking place on the Sunday evening.
We are delighted to welcome back French
blues maestro, ‘Claude Bourbon’ and exciting acoustic roots artist ‘Martin Harley’
will be taking a break from his band to
perform solo, ably supported by our very
own ‘Mary Spender’. Local blues legend,
‘Pete Catlin’ will also be ‘riffing it up big
time’ with his new blues ‘super group’; ‘The
Bards’. Top Beatles tribute ensemble
‘Sergeant Pepper’s Only Dart Board
Band’ are back and Jazz buffs have a treat
in store with, ‘The Chris Walker Swingtet’
who are also back who are making their
Salisbury Live debut. International R ‘n’
B/rock icon’s ‘Dusty’s Rusty Nuts’ are
scheduled to appear,Derby’s indie/folk
rockers ‘James Warner Prophecies’ are
back after their barn storming appearance
at last years event. ‘Urban Troubadours’
will be a main feature of this years event,
they are an acoustic singer/songwriter collective that will be appearing in different
venues over the Salisbury Live Weekend.

Up Date on Pete Sharp
Plenty going on musically for musician
Pete Sharp at the moment, Pete’s acoustic
duo ‘Sharpy & Harpy’ are going from
strength to strength, gaining a good following of those in the know, producing some
incredible gigs. Rock band ‘Oblivion’ has
had a complete make over, still fronted by
Pete on vocals and guitar but now joined
by the talented James Bennett on lead
guitar and keyboards plus Rob Needham
on heavy rock/metal drums, with Aidan
Cochran on bass guitar. They have a new
set, a new tighter, slicker, more professional sound and a new found energy all adding up to a very exciting perfomance.
There first gig in the new line up was at
Wooky Hole Caves which ended with a
standing ovation!! This gig was recorded
and filmed so Pete will be adding clips of
this to www.myspace.com/petesharpband
Pete is also back with ‘The Age’

‘ MAMA STONE’S ’ UPDATE
When we started to distribute April’s
Scrumpy, news reached us that Mama
Stone’s in Wellington, featured on our front
cover for April, had been ordered by Taunton & Deane council to close due to continued complaints of noise at the venue. This
is sad news for the arts and live music plus
the supporters of this recently opened venue. Mama Stone’s is looking to relocate in
Exeter, Devon later in the year.

FOOD SERVED MONDAY to SATURDAY 12 till 2.45 pm
“THE KITS” from down under
“Music to look good to” was typical of the
media’s enthusiastic reaction to “The Kits”
album ‘Primitive Tales’ during the bands
Australian Jan / Feb promo tour. Their
move to London in 2007 moulded “The
Kits” sound in the crucible of the UK’s
unforgiving club circuit. Soon, live shows
delivered blow after blow of driving material, showcasing new and now permanent
members Marc Bonet from Spain and
Michael Cleverly from New Zealand. “The
Kits” limbered up for 2009 by playing gig’s
in Sydney and Melbourne, the reaction
from fans and promoters was such that
they plan to return to Australia for a full run
of headline appearances commencing mid
October 2009. Based on it’s success in
Australia ‘Get Closer’ is slated to be the
second release off ‘Primitive Tales’
planned to be released to support festival
and summer touring. The band formed by
Kit & Jay Atkinson, the band originally hail
from Melbourne, Australia. After two years
of playing the circuit in Melbourne, the
MAY ‘09
band developed a well earned reputation
for intense live shows. As their sound developed they found themselves drawing an
audience that responded to the kits unique
slant on the garage style, 2006 saw them
release their ‘This is Your Lung’ ep, four
tracks that took the stomp and grit of the
50’s and 60’s, gave it the injection of eternal youth through relentless guitar hooks
and snarling vocals. Their tales of crime,
addiction and short lived romances have
resulted in a rapturous UK following and
earned them supports with The Dirtbombs, Wolfmother, The Saints, and
The Nightmarchers. These slots plus regular shows at the Boston Arms in Tufnell
Park, where the notoriously hard audiences have adopted the band as their own, led
to a deal with industry respected ‘Dirty
Water Records’. For more info go to -

ROCK ‘n’ ROLL
with Boppin Darrin
Hi all and welcome to May, hope you all
have had a great Rockin month and remember the birthdays of the pioneers of
Rock ‘n’ Roll with Ricky Nelson on the 8th
1940, Larry Williams on the 10th 1935, on
the 13th 1943 it’s Richie Valen’s and sharing the same date is Joe Brown, 18th 1911
Joe Turner and the 19th 1932 Alma Cogan.
Larry Williams grew up in New Orleans,
where he learned to play the piano, when
he was 19 he met Lloyd Price who was
recording for specialty records, Lloyd hired
the young Larry as his valet. It was Lloyd
Price who introduced Larry to producer
Robert Blackwell who gave Larry a shot
with a recording “Just Because” which
went to no 11 in the charts , so impressed
they soon had a follow up for Larry “Short
Fat Fannie”, “Bony Maronie” both going to
no 1 position, a star was born! Soon followed with “You Bug Me Baby”, “Dizzy
MAY ‘09
Miss Lizzy” and the classic “Slow Down”.
Everything was going well until the Beatle
invasion in the sixties and Larry now, not
so popular had to find another direction, so
he went into producing for Oken Records
in 1966. He carried on producing over the
years and in January 1980 he was found
dead in his Los Angeles home with a shot
to the head, some say it was suicide some
say it was a contract on him! What ever the
truth he left some classic Rock ‘n’ Roll
tracks.......
This month why not pop a long to Brenda
and Dudley’s @Begbrook 0117 969 7326
on the 9th as they have got ‘Joey and the
Jives’. At Bill’s club @The Jive Inn, Bridgwater 07899 701 498 on the 15th they have

PENNYMOOR SONG AND ALE 2009
CRUSH UK TEN YEARS
The band ‘Crush UK’ are a regular in the
scrumpy gig listing every month and have
been around for ten years. They are based
in South Devon, but gig all over the country
and abroad, fronted by the very talented
Martin Weller, who like me is a firm believer
in keeping music live!! They have just released an album CD 1999 - 2009 which
has been complied from their albums ‘Changing By Degrees’ - ‘Pay Attention’ ‘The Next Big Thing’ and their most recent
‘Quiddity’. This contains 20 tracks and if
you are a regular at ‘Crush UK’ gigs this
album is a must for you, this has some
really excellent tracks with the band in full
throttle, that are good examples of their
broad appeal, very enjoyable. You can
obtain the bands recordings from www.crushuk.com/store
www.myspace.com/martinweller
For gig information, bookings etc....
Phone Martin on - 07932 121266

The BASS GUITAR
Part two * There are three ways the neck can be
connected to a Bass guitar, bolt on, fixed or
through neck. The so called bolt-on neck is
the most common and actually use’s four
(sometimes five) screws. These are either
mounted on a single metal plate, or a series of recessed metal cups tp prevent
them digging into the body wood. Fixed
necks normally use glued tenon joint,
which is more usually found on guitars.
Thru-necks have the same pieces of wood
used in the neck construction running right
through the body, which is often formed of
two ‘wings’ sitting either side of the neck
section to give a distinctive series of decorative stripes.
* Materials also have a noticeable effect
on the tone of the instrument. For instance,
a maple body tends to make for a percussive response with a lot of upper harmonics, where as the softer, lighter swamp ash
produces a more rounded tone with more
of the fundamental to the lower notes. Fingerboard materials also effect the tone as
well as the woods used in the neck.
* While many basses continue to use passive systems, ‘active’ systems with powered preamplifiers first hit the scene in
1971, when Alembic produced it’s first
bass. Made for Jack Cassidy of ‘Jefferson
Airplane’, it cost more than $4,000
(something like £20,000 in today’s money!)
The Leo Fender designed Musicman
Stingray bass came onto the market in
1976 with a distinctive humbucking pick-up
and an active pre-amp that was more affordable to working bass players. The key
advantage to active electronics is a much
greater tonal range, with bass treble and
sometimes mid ranges all having controls
that will boost as well as cut.
* As many bass guitar and electronics
manufacturers use the pick-up shapes established on the fender precision and Jazz
basses respectively. Hence many makers
use ‘P’ and ‘J’ style pick-up shapes, even
though the tones their units produce may
MAY ‘09
Issue 2 Vol 6
be quite different. One reason for following
this orthodoxy is that it makes it easier for
players to customise their existing instruments without necessarily routing any
woodwork.
* A scale length of 34” is widely excepted
as standard on a bass (although it’s often
called ‘long scale’) Because the low B
string used on 5-string basses can tend to
flap, some players are prepared to go to a
35” scale to increase string tension.
‘Medium scale’ would be 30” - 33”, while
‘short scale’ is 30” or less. Shorter scale
instruments can be easier to play, due to
less of a distance between the frets, but the
reduced tension can lead to diminished
response.
* The shortest bass scale length is undoubtedly the Ashbory Bass, now made
under license by Fender but previously
produced under the De Armond and Guild
brands. The scale length is around 18”,
with the sound from the silicone rubber
strings picked up by the integral
bridge/Pick-up unit. It sounds surprisingly
like a plucked double bass.
* The standard number of strings on a bass
is four, but there have been variations. The
mondern 5-string has a low D, but Fender
produced a model with ahigh string for a
while. Other variations include 8- strings
(tuned in double course’s a bit like a 12
string guitar). As well as models with six or
more strings, normally tuned at intervals of
a forth.
* Paul McCartney’s famous violin shaped
‘Beatle bass’ was made by Hofner, and
vintage basses just like his are highly collectable. Two extra facts : @ Paul McCartney isn’t left handed, he only learned to
play that way. (b) The first violin bass was
the Gibson EB1, made from 1953, a solid
body design, it had an extendable peg to
enable it to be played upright like a double
bass, but most players have preferred to
use it as a bass guitar on a strap.
* The acoustic bass has been around for
20 years, but has only achieved popularity
due to recent interest in bands holding
‘unplugged’ sessions. Continued page 27
25
FREE EVERY MONTH Scrumpy ‘n’ Western
Acoustic bass guitars produce nothing like
the volume of a double bass, so another
key to their success has been the increasing availability of high quality pick-ups and
pre-amp systems.
* Some makers, notably Kramer, have
produced bass guitars with aluminium
necks, typically with wooden in-fills to
make them less cold to the touch. The
Kramer instruments were produced from
1976 to 1985, however the production
techniques are complex and the benefits
hard to identify, although the necks are
probably impossible to warp!
