What most impresses your drivers? And what opportunities and benefits does the TopClass 500 offer you as an operator? Our “in focus” topic addresses these questions and many more. Find out how the TopClass 500 takes travel comfort and advanced technology in the touring coach sector to an all-new level, creating new possibilities for individualised premium travel concepts. Travel in style 10 | In the Land of Light The TopClass 500 is all about travel conceived to fulfil the most discerning standards – as beautifully illustrated on a tour in the South of France Best in Class 16 | C oach and bus technology par excellence All the expertise from the Daimler Buses development team has been incorporated into the TopClass 500 coaches Horizons 18 | The evolution of premium travel There are many opportunities for tour operators in the fast-growing market for upscale individualised travel An S 517 HD is equipped with a walnutwood level floor 06 | Special features The ComfortClass 500 with a level floor 24 | A new lift system The Kinemaxx 300 sets all-new standards 47 | A clever piggyback solution The variable rear box for the 500 series From the cruise ship into a Setra: two new S 412 UL coaches transport tourists in Tahiti 32 | Specialist for overland services The UL business for the tendering business 26 Passengers enjoy breathtaking views in the new Setra S 431 DT double-decker coach 40 | The Setra classic coach collection The latest addition: an S 315 HDH 43 | Ideal for airport shuttle services Ten S 517 HD coaches for Brussels 06 | Setra Get-togethers Setra Get-togethers | 07 France – nine Setra coaches for the Alsace region: A smart solution for less CO2 E nvironmental considerations were definitely in the foreground, as the Conseil Général – the chief administrative authority of the French department of the Bas-Rhin – purchased new service buses for public transportation in the Alsace region. The choice was made in favour of the Setra MultiClass with low-emission MercedesBenz OM 470 Euro VI engines with 265 kW of power. In order to further reduce the CO2 emissions of the already very clean BlueEfficiency Power engine, the top speed of these buses was limited to 95 km/h by the French customer, instead of the standard 100 km/h. Emissions can in fact be significantly reduced without requiring any great technical effort. The speed restriction also promotes anticipatory driving, with shorter and fewer acceleration phases. This saves fuel and therefore money. The Compagnie des Transports du Bas-Rhin, which was commissioned by the Conseil Général with the operation of the lines for regional transportation, received six S 417 UL and three S 419 UL MultiClass all featuring this individual technical modification. With the new buses, the Conseil Général wants to increase the appeal of public transportation in the department of the Bas-Rhin, while relieving traffic congestion within the area’s cities and towns. With a seat pitch of 72 cm, the S 417 UL provides space for 63 passengers. The S 419 UL can carry up to 67 people. To facilitate entry for passengers with reduced mobility, all nine vehicles were also equipped with a wheelchair lift. As is mandatory in France, an integrated alcohol measuring device for the driver was also included, which prevents the engine from starting if required. A ComfortClass 500 with a level floor and 2+1 seating and offers passengers plenty of room. Even travellers with reduced mobility will enjoy significant added value in freedom of movement. The hallmark of the level floor is the seamless passenger level without steps or a platform, which enables a variety of seating concepts. In this case, 2+1 seating (2 seats to the right and 1 to the left) was selected for Voyages Emile Weber’s coach. By installing additional fixing points, conversion to 2+2 seating at a later date is still possible. This way, the operator can capitalise on flexible application possibilities, while significantly increasing the coach’s resale value. Austria’s most beautiful coach C ustomised coach design from the Setra DesignCenter ensures high-impact, effective advertising for coach operators. And it’s even nicer when you win an award for your design. Together with the DesignCenter in Neu-Ulm, the Pfeifer travel agency from Neustift in Styria, Austria, created a memorable and truly distinctive design. At the “Bus Travel Business” show in Vienna/ Voesendorf, the S 431 DT luxury coach’s design won first place in the “Austria’s Most Beautiful Coach 2013” competition with an unprecedented lead. The Setra A career worthy of a Hollywood success story! Workshop visitors select the most beautiful vehicle design W ith the new 500 series, the ComfortClass can be equipped with a level floor for the first time ever – thanks to its comfortable standing height of 2.10 metres. Voyages Emile Weber opted for this equipment version in one of its vehicles, as part of an order of ten Setra S 517 HD coaches. The tour operator from Luxembourg also selected an American black walnut finish, which gives the interior an elegant touch. In addition, the coach features 22 premium leather seats, a club corner and a large, specially equipped galley kitchen. The level floor makes the passenger space appear even more spacious double-decker, with its “Marilyn” design motif, brought the Hollywood beauty’s famous curves to the winding Alpine roads – delighting show visitors. Within a timeframe of only six months, the coach was manufactured, fully equipped and graced with its award-winning design. The Pfeifer family business, founded in 1992, has grown into an impressive company thanks to its truly visionary ideas. It now employs a staff of 30 and deploys a fleet of 26 coaches. A career worthy of a Hollywood success story! L arge crowds gathered at the “Busplaner” Munich magazine’s stand at the RDA Workshop in Cologne. At the yearly photo competition for the “Most Beautiful Coach” held at the leading trade fair in coach and group tourism in 2013, only Setra coaches could be seen on the winners’ podium. As first-place winner, visitors selected a Setra S 416 GT-HD belonging to “Heinz Sprenzel Reisen” from Bernbeuren in the Allgäu region. The idea for the design – a colourful underwater South Sea world – came from the operator’s family and was then further developed and implemented by the Setra DesignCenter in Neu-Ulm. Lieselotte and Heinz Sprenzel are very proud of this award: „We are delighted with the great work done together with the design professionals from Setra. They evolved our family’s suggestions and ideas and brought them beautifully to life.” Back in 2007, the Heinz Sprenzel company was honoured with the “Most Beautiful Coach” award for their Setra with a floral design – also an S 416 GT-HD. The second “Most Beautiful Coach” prize went to the “Schörnig Reisen” company from Hanover with its Setra S 515 HD with Royal Class design. Third place went to the “Reiseparadies Kastler” company from the Ottenheim area in Austria. Consistent PPC use can result in up to four per cent less fuel consumption. Under testing conditions, experienced coach and bus journalists achieved an average consumption advantage of 9.2 per cent. A t a speed of just under 100 km/h, the TopClass 500 is rolling towards a moderate highway incline. The three-axle vehicle accelerates almost imperceptibly, picking up a little momentum. At just the right moment, the transmission switches down from the eighth to the seventh gear, and the Setra tightens its muscles, mobilising its enormous power reserves. The super high-decker smoothly takes on the hill. Shortly before the summit, the Setra independently reduces power, rolls over the crest, then immediately switches up, taking on the next gradient solely with the momentum created by its vehicle’s mass. A slight peak in momentum follows. And before the slope flattens out, the tachometer’s needle settles at idle, and the Setra “sails” onward, until the technology once again shifts into eighth gear once the set touring speed is reached. This sounds like an impeccable performance from a highly concentrated, experienced bus driver with excellent knowledge of the route. But in reality, the driver is simply sitting behind the wheel, fully relaxed, staying on course A steep mountain Mountain rolling In a basin Over the crest EcoRoll The system switches back early and/or increases speed Why accelerate, if rolling is sufficient? Exploiting the vehicle’s momentum Rolling over crests to avoid downhill braking Precise activation of the EcoRoll mode • Avoiding gear changes on the mountain as far as possible • PPC: optimised switching sequence (less gear changes) • The vehicle detects whether the set speed is achieved by rolling fast enough • EcoRoll kicks in to avoid drag loss • Briefly exceed top speed tolerance, but only minimally, to pick up more momentum • The vehicle detects whether it can roll over a crest with sufficient speed • EcoRoll kicks in to reduce drag loss • Started before crests and at the end of the mountain below the set speed • Terminated under braking speed • Not activated when the EcoRoll phase is too short and focusing solely on the traffic. Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), the new and very smart predictive cruise control function in the TopClass 500, is behind these exceptionally clever manoeuvres. On long-distance routes, it operates acceleration and transmission as perfectly as taught in driver training – with a wide view ahead. Any good bus driver with a passenger-friendly and fuel-saving driving style can achieve this as well. But how can a driver know every single incline and downward slope on the close to 300,000 kilometres of expressways and highways across all of Europe – by heart – and who can boast always being in top physical condition with perfect levels of attention? The PPC function can do just this – as it supports the driver on the way towards the perfect ride. PPC combines three-dimensional maps and GPS information. Since this information can also be linked with current speed, engine and transmission data, PPC selects both the timing and extent of switching, as well as the appropriate cruise PPC cockpit display, graphic PPC functions with bus and route, poss. hilly highway control speed set by the driver within a preset speed range – and depending on the route. This has many advantages: unnecessary switching operations are eliminated, and the ride is more comfortable and more economical. Capitalising on momentum in a targeted manner saves time on inclines as well as fuel. The third fuel-saving manoeuvre is riding without gas on downward slopes, along with temporary “sailing” in neutral position. If a shrewd driver aims to use PPC to achieve absolute perfection, he can simply set the cruise control on the highway just below the permitted speed (e.g. 97 instead of 100 km/h), allowing the PPC a speed tolerance of plus/minus 3 km/h. This way, PPC can take advantage of momentum peaks and imperceptibly reduce the tempo when nearing crests. This highly intelligent tactic makes the TopClass 500 especially economical. In fact, along mixed flat and hilly routes, the driver can actually reduce fuel consumption by up to four percent by using the PPC. A test performed with bus journalists from all over Europe demonstrated just what PPC can achieve on hilly routes. On three selected, PPC-friendly routes, they covered over 3,000 kilometres over five days with three TopClass 500 coaches loaded to 21.5 tonnes of gross weight. On average, the testers with PPC saved 9.2 per cent, compared with a ride with cruise control, but without the PPC function. Depending on individual driving style and settings, the advantage was between 5.9 per cent and 11.7 per cent. And even if somewhat deviating measurements are likely under different topographic conditions, the result is still nothing less than sensational – with the added benefit of a perfect driving style. With this intelligent technology, the TopClass 500 achieves impressive fuel efficiency. 10 | Setra Travel in Style Setra Travel in Style | 11 A dream destination in a dream coach: In the Land of Light Coach travel for connoisseurs: along the Côte d’Azur in the new TopClass 500. The ultimate travel indulgence in a luxury yacht on wheels. 12 | Setra Travel in Style Setra Travel in Style | 13 T he coast’s soft light and mild climate attracted and inspired them all. Painters like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse created some of their most iconic images on the French Riviera, and it’s also where writers like Ernest Hemingway and Henry Miller wrote their impassioned literature. The Côte d’Azur – the mere thought of its ambiance is enough to soothe the soul – arousing wanderlust for the blue coast with its extraordinary light and incomparable flair. The summers are longer here and spring begins earlier than elsewhere. Winter, snow and ice are nothing more than a distant memory. This truly is a pampered region where both locals and visitors have been taking it easy and enjoying life for generations. The area’s magnificent architecture – its stately villas and fashionable hotels – reflect this as well. Between Saint-Tropez and Menton, elegant yachts are moored at the ports of Antibes, Cannes and Nice. And all of this, as the new TopClass 500 glides along the coastal road. The TopClass 500 is ideally suited to this environment. Like a luxury yacht on wheels and a masterpiece among touring coaches, it offers its guests unprecedented The Côte d’Azur – the mere thought of its ambiance is enough to soothe the soul. comfort. Perhaps the greatest luxury on board each vehicle is the space. In a TopClass 500 coach, passengers travel free and unrestricted. This is reflected, for instance, in the generous 2.1-metre headroom. But even more important is the sense of airiness and spaciousness in the TopClass 500 – and especially with the new optional TopSky Panorama glass roof which spans the entire ceiling from front to back. Considerably longer and wider than before, it floods the cabin with the welcoming, warm light of the Mediterranean sun – opening up the view to the outside onto churches and palm trees, or simply inviting you to dream. Just recline the backrest and let yourself get lost in the endless blue sky with just a few white dots of cloud passing by. In the TopClass 500, passengers take their seats as if they were on a well protected observation deck. And still, the midday summer heat and annoying sunrays remain locked out – with double glazing and special glass tinting effectively filtering them out. Inside, the impression of spaciousness and harmony pervades. The open luggage racks above almost seem to hover, while tasteful fabrics under them spread a cosy atmosphere. The high-quality service sets are covered in quilted leather that feels as good as it looks. Laterally, elegant loudspeaker frames give structure to the long air ducts. While travelling along the coastal roads, passengers can take in the TopClass 500’s countless lovely details. The coach’s comfortable seats with their soft padding give passengers a feeling of security. In this coach, the double seats are staggered by a few centimetres, enabling all passengers to enjoy a clear view through the window outside. The selection of fabrics and leathers for the seat covers is huge. The experienced interior designers from Setra will be pleased to advise you in choosing one that is both tasteful and practical. Do the yacht owners in the marina below revel in as generous a selection? We doubt it! In the new TopClass 500, form and function merge with perfect harmony – down to the last impeccable detail. In fact, this coach could rank among today’s entirely legal stimulants. 14 | Setra Travel in Style During the journey, your view is drawn again and again to the outside – through the large side windows and the sweeping windscreen. Above it, the roof’s wide dome arches over a band of elegant smoked glass and the brand logo. Outside the coach, the glittering sunlight is reflected in the sea, the waves break on steep, rugged rocks, smaller villas cling to the hillside and palms offer shade to passersby. Fine sandy beaches appear again and again to the delight of sun lovers and as a platform for water sports. If the sun becomes blinding, a flick of the hand on the practical blackout blind is all you need. The coastal road blends in perfectly with the furrowed rocky landscape. It winds its way along each and every cove. Far from ideal if you’re in a rush, but ideal for connoisseurs. You’re in good hands in the exceptionally agile Setra. As you look down from your high vantage point through its large windows onto the bustling traffic below with its brazen scooters and impatient motorists. The travellers in the TopClass can just smile, as they hover above the everyday goings on. The suspension smoothly filters out uneven road surfaces, as the engine does its job almost inaudibly down in the engine room at the rear. The TopClass ranks as one of the gentle giants Setra Travel in Style | 15 Travelling in the TopClass is all about unmatched well-being for your passengers. of the road. If you’re interested in finding out exactly where you are currently located between Saint-Tropez and Menton, you can take a look at the navigation system’s map in the unfolded ceiling monitors – dotted in the glass roof like islands in a deep blue sea. The climate chart promises five to seven hours of sunshine every day in the Côte d’Azur in the winter months. In the summer you can expect ten to twelve daily hours of sunshine and at least 300 sunny days a year. The TopClass 500’s highly sensitive air conditioning system isn’t at all intimidated by the French Riviera’s minute temperature fluctuations. A two-zone control system automatically ensures a uniform temperature from the front all the way through to the rear of the coach. Thanks to a sensor, the technology also balances out fluctuations in humidity. The result is air conditioning in the truest sense of the word – so much more than simple temperature control. Travelling in the TopClass really does mean absolute well-being for your passengers. The best air conditioning is one that is never felt. One that operates in the background – unobtrusively and effectively. One that cools during the day and warms And the Red Dot goes to … The TopClass 500 has been given the Red Dot Award 2014. This is the second time in a row that the international award for outstanding product design has gone to a Setra model. Last year, it was the ComfortClass 500 which was awarded the coveted prize. A confirmation of Setra’s exceptionally innovative vehicle design, of which we are very proud. during the evening and at night – when even on the Côte d’Azur, temperatures cool to less than ten degrees Celsius. The TopClass 500 counters not only with its powerful convector heater and optional window sill temperature control, but also with its new underseat heating with two hot air outlets beneath every double seat – which ensures uniform temperature distribution in the foot well. It isn’t only the heating that ensures well-being on board in the early evening Mediterranean breeze, but also the fascinating lighting effects in the coach’s interior. Light strips stretch above along the luggage racks. The casing of the reading lights with recessed aluminium strips conveys a subtle 3D effect. On request, ambient lighting above the side windows can be installed as well. All this adds up to a discreet, intimate and above all, comfortable illumination of the passenger compartment. If you happen to look up, you discover the reflection of the interior lighting in the TopSky Panorama glass roof against the dark Mediterranean sky. In the TopClass, This Setra would have also delighted the Côte d’Azur’s celebrated painters. passengers feel like they’re sitting in an elegant lounge environment. And we believe that this Setra would have also delighted the Côte d’Azur’s celebrated painters. Arriving at your destination, you may not wish to leave this feeling of comfort. But it will no doubt be worth your while to exit the Setra using its curved, wide and well-lit stairs. Perhaps you’re headed to one of the elegant, proud hotels, or one of the coast’s two dozen star restaurants with Mediterranean cuisine and a perfectly aged wine? Or maybe you’ll be enjoying one of the area’s famous cultural events and festivals: the Lemon Festival of Menton, the Nice Carnival, or even the film festival in Cannes. For those lucky enough to travel in the TopClass 500, the red carpet is always rolled out – at least metaphorically. Just strolling along the famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice has its charm. You may even catch a glimpse of a celebrity guest at the legendary Negresco Hotel. Let yourself be inspired. By the Côte d’Azur and its fascinating light. By this breathtaking coast. And by the beautiful TopClass 500. 16 | Setra Best in Class Setra Best in Class | 17 Cutting-edge coach technology in the TopClass 500: The TopClass 500 – tomorrow’s coach technology today The entire knowledge of Daimler Buses’ R&D flows into the vehicles of the TopClass 500. The series delivers state-of-the-art technology – redefining cost-effectiveness and safety in the top-of-the-line touring coach segment. W ith the TopClass 500, cutting-edge technology comes into play even before you enter the premium three-axle coach. The new Multi Function Key (MFK) feels good in your palm – although it is so much more than just a fancy key. It unlocks and opens doors, performs a complete departure check with light test, displays fuel and AdBlue levels, checks on-board network voltage and air pressure, turns on interior lights, pre-heats the passenger compartment – and much more – at the simple touch of a button from outside the coach. On the inside, the cockpit is now 50 millimetres closer to the driver. The easy-to-reach controls are logically laid out, and all the instruments, including the multifunction Together, the cockpit and the driver form a single, perfectly functioning unit. display, are within clear view. Together, the cockpit and driver form a single, perfectly functioning unit. Not only is travelling in the TopClass 500 a unique pleasure, driving one is also an unmatched experience. Simply insert the MFK – it serves as drive authorisation – and start the engine by pressing a button. Position the fully automatic PowerShift transmission’s selection lever to “D”, release the parking brake, step on the gas and off you go. Smoothly yet powerfully, the high-performance, in-line six-cylinder engine in the rear takes off, flexing its muscles when it accelerates, and easily paving highway inclines. The drive train performs superbly. The engine, a Mercedes OM 471, with its 12.8 litres of cubic capacity with either 350 kW or 375 kW, achieves an impressive torque of 2,300 or 2,500 Nm. More important, however, than the dry facts is the power development you immediately feel behind the wheel. Even well below 1,000 rpm, the engine powerfully steps up, showing impressive spontaneity throughout its entire speed range. It is perfectly complemented by the Mercedes GO 250-8 PowerShift. Never before has an automatic transmission performed faster or more smoothly. Most gear changes are only experienced by the twitch of the rev counter needle and engine frequency change. Operating the steering column control stalk couldn’t be any easier – on the rare occasion that an intervention may be required. State-of-the-art technology assists the driver while reducing fuel consumption. The alternators work in a regulated manner, while LED technology reduces power consumption. Even the turbocharged air compressor saves costly fuel. A new option is the Eco Driver Feedback feature that evaluates driving style. It registers how the driver handles gas and brakes, among other parameters, praises the driver when he or she drives in a uniform fashion, and highlighting any possible deficits. Another first in the coach world is something called Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), the “seeing” cruise control feature. Installed optionally in conjunction with Adaptive Cruise Control and Active Brake Assist, the GPS-based technology is familiar with all the major highways in Europe, and it knows in advance when to expect inclines and declines. So, for example, PPC switches back when going uphill or lets the TopClass 500 An automatic transmission has never performed faster or more smoothly. roll before reducing. The latest trick is called EcoRoll. Depending on the situation, this technology imperceptibly shifts the gear to idle, then rolls the Setra in the neutral transmission position. As a result, the new TopClass 500 runs considerably more cost-effectively than its predecessor. The coach’s finely tuned aerodynamics, from its extremely curved windscreen through to its rear spoiler lip, play a key role as well. Beginning at a 95 km/h speed, the vehicle descends imperceptibly by 20 millimetres, therefore reducing drag. The new TopClass 500 not only looks impressive, it glides along smoothly – and noise stays where it belongs: on the outside. At the same time, the three-axle reliably runs straight ahead, immediately obeying the slightest steering command. Thanks to the front axle’s large steering angle and the actively steered trailing axle with independent wheel suspension, the turning circle is small. And, maximum safety is one of the new TopClass 500’s most significant features. The service brake is supported by a new lightweight, and durably strong water retarder. It never tires, even on long downhill stretches. One of the perhaps more common features, such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), can optionally join a variety of new assistance systems. In fact, no coach has ever offered more assistance systems, or more safety. And that is exactly what the TopClass 500 is all about: a high measure of cutting-edge technology serving both the driver and the operator. TopClass 500: driver assistance systems* Adaptive Cruise Control (ART) with Active Brake Assist 2 (ABA 2) It automatically keeps a predetermined distance from the preceding vehicle and adjusts speed accordingly. Should a rear-end collision threaten, an emergency stop is automatically triggered. With Active Brake Assist 2 (ABA 2), the same applies for stationary obstacles. The additional Stop & Go function controls braking and starting up in sluggish traffic. Attention Assist The Attention Assist feature detects driver fatigue by assessing vehicle movements and, using an optical and sensorial signal, advises him or her to take a break. Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL) The DBL feature prevents unintended acceleration when driving downhill over a certain speed limit or above 100 km/h via retarder intervention. Eco Driver Feedback (EDF) The EDF feature gives the driver individual feedback on his or her personal driving style. Electronic tire pressure monitoring system It displays the exact air pressure of each tire in the instrument cluster, eliminating the need for tedious manual control. In cases of pressure loss or excessive temperatures, a warning is issued – even while driving! Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) Within existing physical possibilities, ESP® prevents skidding through the targeted braking of individual wheels. The ABS Anti-Block system, ASR Traction Control, and BAS Brake Assist functions are integrated to the ESP®. Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) On the basis of GPS data, PPC recognises forward-lying highway topography and, together with the Powershift transmission, it ensures an efficient speed profile targeted at saving fuel. (Please also see the separate article on PPC on the following pages.) Lane Assist (SPA) The SPA feature uses vibration in the seat to warn the driver when unintentional lane departures occur. *individual equipment available on request 18 | Setra Horizons Setra Horizons | 19 The evolution of premium travel: “Individualisation is the new luxury” Tourism is becoming more and more individualised, and this is also significantly changing the premium sector. There are many opportunities facing exclusive tour operators. SetraWorld took a close look at the multifaceted market for upscale customised tours. I lona Hensel appears relaxed. The Geotoura managing director just spoke with her tour guide in Spain and everything is going exactly according to plan. The participants of the nine-day “Journey through Andalusian culture” customised tour are delighted. The small group of travel and culture lovers was just enjoying an original “Gitano” show. The local group of performers was carefully selected by Ilona Hensel – they are one of Andalusia’s finest flamenco ensembles. The venue is also exceptional: the historic cave offers both great acoustics and an authentic, ambiance-filled environment. The travel highlight for the next day was also selected early on. In the morning, the 16 travellers will be driven in a very comfortable coach to an olive tree plantation, located right in the middle of the Córdoba province. Partaking in an olive oil “degustation”, they experience the many taste secrets of Andalusia’s liquid gold. Afterwards, they will be served the best regional cuisine by the cultivators of the precious oil. Geotoura, the tour operator from Heidelberg, has several more fascinating highlights throughout southern Spain on its agenda: guided tours of Moorish cultural treasures, a visit to a traditional Sherry bodega, and of course accommodations in carefully selected hotels. “We had to try out different combinations to find out what is most appealing,” explains Geotoura’s managing director Ilona Hensel. “These are important experiences for us. The market for upscale tours – combining culture and comfort – is growing and becoming increasingly discerning.” All these offerings need to deliver high quality, which also has its price. Meticulous preparation and top quality The worldwide demand for individualisation has long been recognised by the tourism industry, and what was originally a trend has evolved into a new travel market segment – one that continues to alter the conventional notions of premium and luxury. While one person may insist on a five-star beach hotel, another one dreams of a guided tour of Mount Kilimanjaro, or perhaps a relaxing stay on a mountain farm with a focus on self-discovery – and guaranteed without an internet connection. Or even, as in Andalusia, the immersion into a foreign way of life with diverse cultural and culinary impressions along the way. There is a common denominator to all these offerings: they all need to deliver high quality, which also has its price. At Geotoura, meticulous preparation is an absolute must for each trip. First, contacts need to be established and maintained in the host country. Then, on site, hotels, restaurants and other service providers need to be visited and personal contacts have to be established. If an organiser has a soft spot for a particular region or type of travel, all the better: “This passion is then passed on directly to the customer, and then it’s easy to give each 20 | Setra Horizons Setra Horizons | 21 and every participant of a group tour the feeling of a very special and unique holiday. This is how individualisation becomes a very personal luxury.” Geotoura’s customers are mostly over 50 years of age with aboveaverage income and time to travel – the classic clientele for premium travel. Package versus modular tours Close to half of all travellers in the EU still opt for package or all-inclusive offers. Even in the premium segment, the all-inclusive option is becoming increasingly popular, with the Club Med model serving as template. However, the number of vacationers who want to create their own trip is growing. They can select their preferences from a variety of travel components. Country, type of tour, accommodations, cultural programme – these all have to be combined as flexibly as possible. But not every combination works: “We’ve had less than ideal experiences, for example, mixing culture with nature,” says Ilona Hensel of Geotoura: “Anyone interested in a vacation focusing on culture may welcome a leisurely stroll through a vineyard. But a hiking tour in the Sierra Nevada will not be well received.” Geotoura customers are mostly over 50 years of age with aboveaverage income and time to travel – the classic clientele for premium travel. The Heidelberg organiser is also profiting from the current market trend. In recent years, the number of travellers over the age of 55 has increased by 23 percent worldwide, according to the ITB’s “World Travel Trend Report”. A development that coach operators are well aware of: only a quarter of their clientele in Germany and other EU countries is younger than 50, according to the Association for Coach Comfort & Quality. Experiencing mobility on its own terms Also important for the coach touring industry is that customer expectations are increasing – and the journey itself is most definitely an important part of the holiday. Travellers want to experience interesting places and attractions along the way – travelling in a relaxed ambiance and in a way that is environmentally friendly. This is just another reason why train and coach travel are picking up, whereas air and car travel with their less impressive ecological balance sheets are gradually losing ground (source: Statista.de). The demand for so-called “end-to-end” offerings is increasing as well. Here, the planning of transport from the customer’s front door to the hotel at the holiday destination is provided from a single source, or is at least organised centrally. Coach operators offering a journey from a central collection point pick up their passengers at home by minibus in a personal shuttle service. “There is no doubt that the future belongs to companies that are very service-oriented. They save their customers a lot of work and stress when planning and organising a holiday,” says Anja Kirig, author of the Frankfurt Future Institute’s “Tourism Report 2014”. According to the travel researcher, organisers can easily minimise all those small travel inconveniences with minor tokens to make travellers’ lives just a little bit easier: “For example, with freshly baked biscuits on arrival, a personal flashlight or free lunch boxes.” The best coach to fulfil the most discerning tastes: the TopClass Whether comfort, culture, sustainability or other special experiences, the market for premium travel is quickly changing. Whereas in the past, bookings were clearly split between sailing and cruise ships, exclusive train journeys, safaris and diving holidays, today’s market is increasingly confusing, at least at first glance. But those who take the time to closely observe and analyse their customers’ needs can take advantage of opportunities to customise their offerings. This could and will be worth their while: “For several years now, people in Germany are willing to spend more money on higher-quality travel products. Four-star hotels are booked more often, even if it means travelling for one less night,” says Torsten Schäfer from the German Travel Association. A coach with impeccable quality and superior functionality – such as the Setra TopClass – fits in perfectly with travellers’ increasing demands. The new model generation introduced in 2013 offers the ideal environment for premium travel, since the coaches not only exude a feeling of safety, but also provide comfort and wellbeing at its finest. Ilona Hensel also continues to focus on exclusive, customised travel offerings. In fact, due to popular demand, Geotoura recently expanded its Andalusia portfolio to include Portugal, Sicily and Morocco. Also important for the coach touring industry is that customer expectations are increasing. 22 | Setra Get-togethers Setra Get-togethers | 23 Two Setra coaches for Tahiti The last ComfortClass 400 coach finds its home F ive lengths, seven models and success in over 33 countries. Between 2004 and the end of last year, a total of 6,551 coaches from the ComfortClass 400 series left the Setra production facilities. These are impressive figures for an impressive coach series. From Norway to Italy, and from Poland to Portugal – with the Setra ComfortClass 400, every coach operator found just the right vehicle to meet their unique requirements. Over an entire decade, the series’ high-floor and high-decker coaches for touring, excursions and overland applications combined discerning touring comfort with economically attractive operating costs. And they will no doubt continue to dominate the travel landscape for many years to come. The front runner was the S 415 GT-HD with over 2,600 units travelling along the roads of Europe – and still actively shaping the world of coach travel across the continent. After almost ten years, the production of this very successful Setra series has come to an end, and the next generation – the ComfortClass 500 – is already off to a very promising start. The last ComfortClass 400 coach built in Neu-Ulm found its home with a German customer. The S 415 GT will be deployed by the Swabian operator “Teinachtal-Reisen” in overland transport in the northern Black Forest and the greater Stuttgart area. Lufthansa opts for the 500 series B ecause Lufthansa believes that passengers should be able to enjoy high-level comfort not only in the air but also in the shuttle service, it has opted for Setra. Additionally, the high-floor vehicle offers generous storage space to accommodate even the bulkiest luggage. To connect Alsace to the Frankfurt hub, three S 516 HD/2 coaches will be used, and BusWorld International GmbH from Frankfurt will operate the shuttle service. The two-axle vehicles featuring the airline’s distinctive crane design will commute twelve times daily between the Frankfurt Airport and Strasbourg, performing an important shuttle function. On the road for Lufthansa: the Setra S 516 HD/2 from “BusWorld” The new Setra S 412 UL coaches at the port of Papeete, the capital of Tahiti T he two Setra S 412 UL overland coaches from the MultiClass 400 series travelled by ship on a fourweek voyage until they finally reached their destination: Tahiti. They covered close to 16,000 kilometres on their way from Neu-Ulm in Germany to the faraway islands in the South Pacific. Tahiti is part of French Polynesia and, as a French overseas territory, it is also a member of the European Union. Since the beginning of November 2013, the two Setra S 412 UL coaches have been deployed by Marama Tours. Each one equipped with 41 seats, they bring tourists arriving at Tahiti’s Faa’a international airport, or by cruise ship at the port of Papeete, the country’s capital, to their “We had our last Setra coaches in operation for 20 years.” hotels. As needed, Marama Tours also uses the coaches for excursions to the sister island of Moorea which is located 25 kilometres away, on board the company’s own ferry. The 10.8-metre-long Setra coaches, travelling among the island’s countless minibuses, are true rarities in Tahiti. As early as in 1980, Marama Tours opted for coaches from Setra. “We had our last Setra coaches in operation for 20 years. In the meantime, we also worked with coaches from other manufacturers, but we have decided to place our trust in Setra buses and coaches, because of their high quality, durability and ease of service,” explains Lya Cowan, General Director of Marama Tours. Taking the Setra to Disneyland Paris O n behalf of Disneyland® Paris, the Transdev VEA transport company (Transdev Val d’Europe Airport) takes care of visitor transfers from the airport to the hotels in the amusement park. To ensure that guests, both small and large, all arrive in a good mood, safe and relaxed, VEA organised a competitive tender and finally decided on a Setra S 419 GT-HD. VEA was especially impressed with the generous interior space for up to 69 passengers and all their luggage. The second door of the S 419 GT-HD was repositioned behind the last axle to further increase the luggage space. The 15-metre-long three-axle vehicle was designed on the outside and the inside with the red and yellow Disneyland colours. The engineers from Daimler have developed an exceptionally space-saving lift for touring coaches and overland buses. W hat has long been a given with city buses is now becoming an increasingly important issue in overland and touring travel: passengers want and should have access to barrier-free travel. The issue affects many: in Germany alone, nearly 1.5 million people are dependent on wheelchair mobility, and in Western Europe, the figure is closer to five million. Buses and coaches make an indispensable contribution to mobility which really should be open to everyone. Easy access for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility enables them to take part in public life and to enjoy tourist attractions. With this in mind, Setra can deliver both a coach and a lift from a single factory. Exclusively available for EvoBus brands. Dedicated coach operators have long recognised people with limited mobility as an extremely important target group. They often work closely with aid organisations and associations, and have developed targeted travel concepts. The subject is now affecting other types of organisations as well. In Germany, for example, according to ECE regulation R 107, barrier-free accessibility for newly registered vehicles in long-distance coach travel will be mandatory beginning in 2016, and as of 2020, the same will apply to all vehicles used in long-haul traffic. In some European countries, specially equipped coaches and buses will even be eligible for subsidies. In low-floor and low-entry vehicles, barrier-free accessi- bility isn’t a issue: thanks to low floors and kneeling, nothing more than a folding ramp is required. Unlike the classic overland bus with a 860-millimetre floor height, or even a touring coach with a gangway height of one metre or more. Setra sets new standards in both segments with the new Kinemaxx 300 wheelchair lift. All Setra highdecker coaches can be supplied with the lift as standard from the factory. The Kinemaxx 300 is also available as an option for other vehicles. The new wheelchair lift offers several special features. It covers all the above-mentioned model series with a single model – achieving uniformity in the fleet. But above all, the lift moves almost vertically up and down the coach’s body. Special software controls the raising and lowering of the platform (electric drive) as well as the actual lifting movement (electro-hydraulic drive). Via sensors, the controlling mechanism assesses whether the platform is positioned correctly along the predetermined trajectory, and regulates any possible deviation as required. This leads to a comparatively small amount of required space in both the pivoting and lowered position on the bus platform. At the same time, the wheelchair user is given a feeling of safety throughout the movement by the lift’s proximity to the vehicle. In addition, the Kinemaxx 300 meets all requirements for technical equipment for passengers with reduced mobility: for example, the UN ECE-R 107 with provisions on platform size, roll securing and safety, end stops and many other details. Hinged side railings give the wheelchair user additional protection from rolling back, as does the folded ramp. In overland buses with double-width centre doors, the lift’s aluminium cassette is housed as usual in the bottom All vehicle series are covered with a single lift model. entrance step. For touring coaches, mounting on the right side to the rear of the front axle is provided. An additional door opens access to the vehicle at the height of the passenger compartment. In this case, the lift’s cassette is positioned under the shortened luggage compartment flap just behind the wheel arch. Thanks to compact design and with a height of only 145 millimetres, the cassette requires significantly less space than previously used systems. Correspondingly, the luggage compartment is only reduced by about 0.5 cubic metres. The driver or attendant can easily operate the lift by remote control. The Kinemaxx 300 wheelchair lift’s cassette is made of aluminium, and the platform support structure is essentially made of steel. The system weighs 350 kg and its load capacity of 300 kg is compliant with ECE-R 107. Once on board the coach, the wheelchairs are mounted on airline rails integrated to the platform floor. Depending on the equipment and space requirements, the double seats in this position are removed prior to installation. Alternatively, the company can use so-called cinema seating with folding seats, which can be compacted easily and quickly. If only space for one or two wheelchairs is necessary, this can be set up on the right side of the touring coach at the level of the additional door. If further wheelchair users will be travelling, the coach operator can choose to purchase a model with a level floor – such as the ComfortClass 500. Alternatively, the central aisle can be “bridged” with a floor insert or shelf. One thing is guaranteed: operators can look forward to being provided with Setra barrier-free solutions from a single source – from overland buses through to high-decker coaches. 26 | Setra Best in Class Setra Best in Class | 27 Let the future come: high tech for the touring giant Euro VI was mandatory with the arrival of the new year. And the result is nothing less than a thoroughly upgraded Setra touring double-decker. I t has never been quite as superb as it is today: the new Setra S 431 DT with Euro VI emissions standard is more economical, easier to operate, more comfortable and safer. Insiders recognise it from the rear by the engine compartment’s new air vent. Viewed from the front, what immediately catches the eye is the bonded windscreen without a rubber frame. It improves the coach’s aerodynamics while reducing wind noise. But even more important are the double-decker coach’s countless inner values. The drive train clearly benefits from the new BlueEfficiency Power engine generation. Although the cubic capacity was reduced by more than 25% to 12.8 litres, power increased to 375 kW, as did the torque by 200 to 2,500 Nm. This results in even better acceleration and pulling power The drive train also shows its strengths in sensitive manoeuvres. at a lower speed, as well as reduced fuel consumption. The new engine generation has successfully demonstrated its smooth running characteristics and quietness in both the ComfortClass 500 and the TopClass 500. The fully automatic Mercedes GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission is standard equipment. Fast and buttery soft gear changes are among the key features of this transmission which was specially developed for coaches and buses. The drive train also shows its strengths in sensitive manoeuvres during which, thanks to the “creep function”, the driver can handle the powerful coach with the brake pedal alone. “Predictive Powertrain Control”, the predictive cruise control feature, is also unique to coaches and buses. It works on the basis of GPS data, knows the routes of all major highways in Europe, responds quickly to ascents and descents – and is only available in the TopClass. Revolutionary fuel-saving technology, such as needs-based air treatment control, intelligent generator and energy management, and the low-friction Mercedes RO 440 rear axle, all together result in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to five percent compared to the previous model. In addition, operators profit from extended maintenance intervals. With Setra, Euro VI definitely pays off, in spite of additional expenses for exhaust gas treatment. Companies further benefit from the double-decker’s new selection of variants. The front stairs to the upper deck can be located on the left or the right. As an alternative to the standard design, the second entry is available in a widened version, or even with a double-width door and a ramp for barrier-free travel. The Setra’s driver looks on to a new cockpit. The S 431 DT is more user-friendly than ever, with its multifunction steering wheel with leather cover, electronic ignition, significantly extended steering wheel adjustment, new display instruments and the intuitive operation of the PowerShift transmission. The same applies to the luggage compartment, where a wider door facilitates access. Passengers may not immediately recognise the innovations the new generation of the double-decker coach brings, but they will most certainly feel them. The new trailing axle, with independent suspension and optimised damping characteristics, further enhances comfort. The smooth-running, inline six-cylinder engine with common-rail injection reduces running noise, as well as the advanced rear suspension and the bonded windscreens for upper and lower decks. Whether passengers, drivers or operators, everyone benefits from the double-decker coach’s new safety systems. The new secondary water retarder shows stamina during continuous braking on downhill stretches, an important safety advantage considering the huge mass of a double-decker coach. Oil changes are no longer necessary, which represents a real cost benefit. In terms of passive safety, the double-decker has also been improved. Its frame structure was strengthened specifically in the areas of the A-pillars and the front of the vehicle. So this Setra already voluntarily meets the pendulum impact test according to upcoming EU regulation ECE R-29. Despite a low seating position, the driver of a Setra doubledecker coach is optimally protected. And, we’ve saved the best for last! The Setra S 431 DT now weighs no more than it did before, in spite of the Euro VI emissions standard and its many innovations. Therefore, full seating capacity, and the resulting maximum revenues are still ensured. And with them, a top position for the double-decker coach from Setra. The Setra S 431 DT double-decker coach: its most important innovations at a glance • A powerful, fuel-saving engine as per the Euro VI emissions standard; significantly raised torque increases pulling power • PowerShift transmission with operation via steering-column, for quick, smooth gear switching • The secondary water retarder saves weight, is maintenance-free and delivers higher continuous braking power • Regulated ancillaries save fuel, while reducing wear • The trailing axle with independent suspension further enhances road handling and comfort • A larger door noticeably improves access to the luggage compartment • Additional variants increase individuality and range of applications • The new instrument panel and multifunction steering wheel enhance ergonomics and facilitate operation • New assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control with Active Brake Assist 2, Lane Assist, Attention Assist and tire pressure monitoring, all contribute to improved active safety • The cornering light makes things easier for the driver when manoeuvring at night and when turning • The reinforced frame in the front of the coach and at the A-pillars increase passive safety • Implementation of Euro VI without additional weight and with a reduction in fuel consumption 28 | Setra Best in Class Setra Best in Class | 29 Factory tour – the finishing hall: The vehicles are taken on a 70 to 90 kilometre test route, reflecting the realities of everyday driving. “Each and every coach is put to the test” In the finishing hall, coaches leaving the assembly line in Neu-Ulm are once again thoroughly examined and are given the finishing touches. In a highly informative tour of this key production area, foreman Harro Przeslawski explains the meticulous inspection process. Each and every Setra coach needs to pass through an uncompromising 12-station quality check before being delivered to its new owner. ensuring that the new Setra is passed on to the customer in mint condition and exactly as ordered. Harro Przeslawski, 65, worked full-time at Kässbohrer/EvoBus for close to 25 years, most recently as Coordinator of Special Customer Requests in spare parts documentation Mr Przeslawski, here we are right in the middle of the finishing hall. The coaches appear to be absolutely perfect, at least to us. What are the items to which the finishing team pays close attention? The finishing team performs important tuning and testing work on the fully assembled vehicles in order to guarantee their road safety, reliability and impeccable quality of workmanship. Test drives and seal tests are run as well. The finishing team is responsible for What are some of the actual tasks you perform here? The first stop for any coach is a test rig on which the suspension geometry of the front and rear axles is measured and corrected if necessary. The finishing team also checks whether the brakes work one hundred per cent. They adjust the speedometer as well as the driving assistance systems. Then, the QA check is made. What’s a QA check? QA quite simply stands for Quality Assurance. The vehicles already exit production in a technically correct condition. Nevertheless, the mechanics meticulously check the power train and the engine against a list of about 300 individual points, as well as the vehicle’s complete design specification. This is done for every coach without exception. And although there is usually nothing to find fault with, this vital step is intrinsic to Quality Management at the EvoBus plant. The same applies to the test drive. What exactly does a test drive cover in this case? The vehicles are taken on a 70 to 90 kilometre test route, reflecting the realities of everyday driving. It covers country roads, main roads and, of course, highways. During the journey, the colleagues check the vehicle’s roadworthiness based on their lists with about 100 test points. Then, here at our premises, the vehicle is driven over a so-called vibration track – and the coach gets pretty shaken up. By then, we know for a fact that the coach drives well, that nothing rattles and that it feels like a real Setra. What else is the coach put through? There is the seal test for example. In a special hall, using a very fine water mist, we check that all windows, doors and roof structures are completely waterproof. The countless water droplets, with which the coach is sprayed from all sides, are so tiny that they would make every little crack in the seals of the vehicle visible. Is the finishing then complete? Not quite. What follows now is the final end check. This is a very time-consuming test that can actually take up to six hours. One last time the team goes through a list of several hundred positions point by point. And although the vehicle has already been extensively checked, we take the time again to ensure that the coach is in absolutely impeccable condition. As you can tell, quality at Setra enjoys a very high priority. So now the coach is finally ready to be handed over to the customer, right? Basically, yes. Just to make absolutely sure that the customer receives a coach that is perfect in every respect, it goes through a final cleaning. Our motto for the last inspection is “How does the customer see their new vehicle?”. The customer should have nothing to find fault with when they are handed over their very own, customised, new Setra. The 12 finishing stations at a glance: 1. The Setra brand received a total of five awards at the event. T he well-rounded overall concept of the new Setra ComfortClass 500 touring coach generation, which was first presented in autumn 2012, impressed the international jury of experts, confirming initial customer feedback on the new vehicles. Nineteen European journalists awarded the “Coach of the Year 2014” title to the Setra ComfortClass 500. The expert jury of coach and bus experts evaluated workmanship, safety features, braking and handling, interior noise, ergonomics and passenger comfort, as well as the series’ operating efficiency. Stuart Jones, President of the “Bus and Coach of the Year” jury, presented the award to Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses, on October 18, 2013, at the international Busworld 2013 show in Kortrijk, Belgium. Since 1989, several European industry publications have jointly awarded the “Bus of the Year” and “Coach of the Year” titles alternately on a yearly basis. During the decisionmaking process, practicality and the overall concept of the vehicles taking part in the “Coach Euro Test” were in the foreground. The “Coach of the Year” title was far from being the only prize awarded to the Setra ComfortClass 500 in Kortrijk. The series was also honoured with the “Green Coach Award 2013”. This is the second time within three years that the environmental prize from the “Omnibusrevue” and “Busfahrer” journals for exceptionally fuel-efficient vehicles was awarded to the Setra brand. Anne Katrin ”The Green Coach Award takes the hard facts into account.” Wieser, editor-in-chief of the “Omnibusrevue” publication, highlighted the stringent testing the vehicles were put through: “The Green Coach Award acknowledges the hard facts which can be transparently tracked based on published test results.” The valuation basis was a calculated factor correlating fuel consumption to the test vehicle’s weight. When tested on a very demanding, 600-kilometre-long route in the Swiss Saxon region, the Setra ComfortClass 500 achieved the best fuel economy. Setra’s new coach generation proved that it is truly exceptional not only in terms of comfort and technology, but also from an ecological perspective. The TopClass 500, which celebrated its grand premiere at the Busworld show in Kortrijk, was honoured with three awards. The “Grand Award” for touring coaches went to the new luxury class from Neu-Ulm. Following a one-week test, the expert jury from the “European Coach & Bus Week”, which traditionally precedes Busworld, highlighted the superb environmental friendliness and safety of the new three-axle Setra. The exclusive long-distance touring coaches from the TopClass 500 series combine luxury with high-level functionality – taking design, quality and safety to an all-new level. “These awards clearly show that, with the Setra ComfortClass 500 in the premium class and the Setra TopClass 500 in the top luxury segment, we have paved the way into a new era of coach technology,” said Hartmut Schick referring to the flurry of awards given to Setra. 32 | Setra Best in Class Setra Best in Class | 33 The UL business – Setra expands the MultiClass: For winners The high-strength seats are precisely tailored to overland, scheduledservice applications. in the tendering business Above, in the passenger compartment, grab bars in the colour of your choice secure standing passengers. Options such as air conditioning and double glazing enhance comfort, as do the space for parking a pram or wheelchair, and the optional lift for passengers with limited mobility. For the UL business, cost-effectiveness also means maximum passenger capacity: platform extensions and a cleverly chosen position of the centre door secure the maximum number of seats in minimal space. This brings us to the three variants: the S 415 UL business with a 12.2-metre length, the S 416 UL business with 12.7 metres and finally the 13.38-metre S 417 UL business – offering 55, 59 and 63 seats respectively. No other manufacturer offers more, at a comparable length and identical seat pitch. The standing room of over 30 is also quite exceptional as well. S etra and overland business – a combination that fits together perfectly. For decades, Setra has played a leading role in scheduled-service overland business. In fact, this is where one in four new Setra vehicles currently earns its keep. The typical Setra attributes, such as durability, quality and efficiency play a decisive role in this tough segment. The new UL business is a recognised, highly qualified specialist in the tendering business. It was developed specifically for overland applications and is precisely targeted to the sector’s requirements: high passenger capacity, robust and practical equipment, extended maintenance cycles with a particularly long interval of 90,000 kilometres, and last but most certainly not least, a very attractive entry-level price in the MultiClass segment. Setra has long known what operators need. In overland scheduled-services, cost pressure from tenders, missing or declining funding and shorter line assignments are increasing. The answer to these challenges is the UL business. The new Setra expands the diverse MultiClass family – functional, practical and completely tuned for cost-effectiveness. A “focus on the essentials” is the motto of the new series. The business models are functionally equipped, and they deliver everything an overland scheduledservices bus needs. The sturdy Setra transit seating (optionally, Setra Route) with fabrics from the Setra Collection is, with its high-strength seats, ideally designed for overland use. The same applies to the selection of spacious luggage racks, which can also accommodate large bags. The shelves’ open lattice structure makes sure that nothing is left behind. And whatever may not fit above, can easily be swallowed by the generous luggage compartment below, which holds up to 6.9 cubic metres of luggage and bags. The new Setra enhances the diversity of the MultiClass range. Setra Best in Class | 35 The UL business is a real Setra in terms of safety as well. The mid-sized 12.7-metre-long S 416 UL business deserves special attention: it can accommodate up to 59 seated and 35 standing passengers. Nonetheless, with its 6.58-metre wheelbase and tight turning circle of just 22.35 metres, it is surprisingly agile. All variants are equipped with two axles, which minimises costs while ensuring maximum luggage space. The front and rear overhangs are identical on all three buses. They only differ in their wheelbase. The new models are typically Setra, from their distinctive faces under their windscreens from the MultiClass series through to the taillights. In between, you’ll find pure Setra quality, from the cathodic dip painting to ensure rust protection all the way through to expert workmanship. The new compact, in-line six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 936 is located at the rear. It is installed upright, achieves with 7.7 l displacement either 220 kW or 260 kW, with a maximum torque of 1,200 or 1,400 Nm. The fourvalve engine features a fully electronic control system and double overhead camshafts, and is the only engine of its size with an adjustable exhaust camshaft. This camshaft adjustment serves the thermal management for exhaust aftertreatment, and for the regeneration management of the particulate filter. With its rigid construction, the engine is designed for long life and boasts very low oil consumption. This is not only good for the environment, it also ensures long maintenance intervals, while being kind to your pocketbook. In short, it’s a real treat for your bottom line. All these statistics only provide a very rough outline of the engine’s exceptional performance. You have to experience how the diesel engine picks up even under 1,000 rpm, how spontaneously it performs in the mid-speed range, and how willingly it makes use of high speeds when needed. And, of course, how smoothly it runs under all these operating conditions thanks to highly sensitive common-rail injection. The engine not only works cleanly, it is exceptionally economical. It boasts the latest fuel-saving technology, such as regulated alternators, the turbocharged air compressor and the efficiency-optimised Mercedes RO 440 rear axle. The appropriate gear plays a key role as well: depending on the application, operators can opt for either the six-speed manual transmission with the easy-to-grip joystick, the fully automated eight-speed Mercedes GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission, or even a converter automatic transmission. Whether short or long distances between stops, whether for lowland or mountain driving, the new business models deliver exceptional performance everywhere. Your driver will recognise the familiar cockpit from the MultiClass series. All controls are within easy reach, from the switch for the driving light on the left, to the tachograph on the right. The instruments, including the centrally positioned colour display, are ideal to read. And no matter whether to regulate air conditioning, interior lighting, or other features – everything is very straightforward. Space is provided for a cash box or ticket printer. And above the driver the destination display is positioned in its fairing. Floor-level, glazed door windows improve visibility to the side from the front and help passengers in the middle to exit the vehicle. The UL business is a real Setra in terms of safety as well. It features an electronic brake system with traction control, Brake Assist and ABS, a powerful engine brake, disc brakes all round and the new, light and powerful water retarder. The MultiClass business models are optionally available with the ESP Electronic Stability Programme. The S 416 UL business: 59 seats and room for 35 standing passengers at a length of 12.7 metres. 36 | Setra Get-togethers Setra Get-togethers | 37 Past exhibitions Setra shows & exhibitions The new TopClass 500 was without a doubt the star of the most recent shows and exhibitions. Numerous customers, fans, representatives from the press and the entire EvoBus management team were present when the two TopClass 500 models were ceremoniously unveiled. Also, for the very first time, an S 516 HD in a double-axle, long-haul service version with a wheelchair lift was also introduced. At the stand, Setra was honoured with several awards for the TopClass 500 and the ComfortClass 500 (see article on page 31). Other show highlights were the presentation of the new FleetBoard Performance Analysis as well as the launch of the new BusStore pre-owned coach and bus brand. SetraShow 2013, Neu-Ulm 11/16-17/2013 It was the first world premiere at a SetraShow: the presentation of the new UL business overland bus from the MultiClass 400 series. The introduction of the UL business took place in front of a large group of media representatives on the Friday. During the evening, Setra customers and employees celebrated the premiere of the TopClass 500. On the Saturday and Sunday, the SetraShow achieved a new visitor record: close to 2,550 visitors, 400 more than last year, came to the CustomerCenter in Neu-Ulm from over 20 European countries and the U.S. The main focus of the two-day event were the test-drives with the TopClass 500 and the UL business. Other vehicles, also fairly new on the market, such as the ComfortClass 500, were extensively tested. The sightseeing tour of the Setra classic coach collection – shown for the first time in the context of a SetraShow – was very popular too. Also new at the event were the special children’s tours for little Setra fans. TopClass 500 Roadshow, Romania 4/23-26/2013 During the four-day roadshow through Romania, Setra customers in the South-East European country had the opportunity to extensively explore and test-drive the new Setra TopClass 500. The participants were especially impressed with the new luxury class’ high quality of travel, functionality and elegance. The roadshow travelled all across Romania through four cities: from Timisoara and Arad in the west, to Sibiu in Transylvania, all the way to Râmnicu Vâlcea. Best Bus on Tour 2014, the Red Bull Ring Spielberg (Austria) 5/13-14/2014 Participants of the Best Bus on Tour driving event at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg in Styria, Austria, had an opportunity to take part in a very unique driving experience. The full range of Euro VI coaches and buses from Setra and Mercedes-Benz, as well as several high-horsepower cars from Daimler, were available for test-driving at one of the world’s most modern racing circuits. Participants enjoyed a get-together and shared dinner on the eve of the event. The more challenging driving exercises were run in groups on the second day of the event. Attractive replacement parts and service offerings from OMNIplus rounded off the programme. OMNIBUS 2014, Kloten (Switzerland) 11/7-8/2013 In November last year, EvoBus Switzerland welcomed close to 1,000 guests from all over Switzerland and Liechtenstein to its traditional in-house exhibition in Kloten. The fascinating technical discussions and the latest product highlights from Setra, such as the new TopClass 500 and the ComfortClass 500, received great attention. Another highlight was the presentation of the S 431 DT double-decker coach with a Euro VI engine and 2+1 seating in a ComfortClass 500. The OMNIplus service and maintenance offerings and the presentation of the new BusStore brand for pre-owned coaches and buses in Switzerland also met with high-level interest. 38 | Setra Service & support Setra Service & support | 39 New – ExpertHandling Training from OMNIplus: Professional knowledge that pays off Much has changed, and not only with the introduction of the new Euro VI engine generation. ExpertHandling Training allows you to greatly enhance the operation of your new coach, while securing a vital building block in ongoing advanced training. ExpertHandling training – content highlights • Operation: Multi Function Key, cockpit, multifunction steering wheel • Driving: assistance systems, engine and transmission, fuel consumption optimisation • Service: maintenance and inspections, minor repairs while on the road S etra coach’s state-of-the-art technology explained in great detail in both function and application by the manufacturer’s specialists – even experts with a lot of experience stand to gain considerable knowledge. You’ll find fascinating technology, especially in Setra’s new 500 series. “Getting in and driving off” without a hitch has never been easier thanks to intuitive and straightforward operation, with all basic functions being self-explanatory for professionals. Nonetheless, if you hope to take full advantage of the cutting-edge technology available in a TopClass, ComfortClass or MultiClass vehicle, you should extensively familiarise yourself with all comfort and safety systems. This is best done with the new ExpertHandling Training programme. Covering key topics such as the cockpit, drive technology or maintenance, the trainers customise the training sessions to individual levels of driver knowledge, and to specific questions and requirements. The best take-off point with a new Setra is undoubtedly the thorough instructions included when you pick up the coach. Many valuable tips are also exchanged among colleagues or at training sessions as well as in the detailed operating instructions. The ExpertHandling Training programme is the perfect complement to all this. Over the course of a whole day, operators and their teams have an opportunity to extensively familiarise themselves with their new Setra – with their own vehicle, on site at their location, directly behind the wheel, and on routes where the drivers are at home. You can also take advantage of this great service on Saturdays. You’ll receive expert answers to all the questions that come up throughout the first few days and weeks in practice. The experienced trainers from OMNIplus have valuable advice to share, since they know each and every Setra down to the last detail: every key on the multifunction steering wheel, detailed menu navigation and heating and air conditioning controls, all the way through to sensitive handling of the Powershift transmission. They even cover the Setra TopClass 500’s new Multi Function Key which enables a complete pre-departure check before you even board the coach. It not only looks like a smart phone, it really is just as versatile. Drivers also have an opportunity to delve into the new engines’ powerful performance characteristics. Those that ensure that the coaches run more economically, more smoothly and more quietly. An anticipatory approach to driving is always in the foreground during training, with a focus on safety, economy and comfort. The new TopClass 500’s intelligent cruise control feature, called Predictive Powertrain Control, is an advanced and highly perfected instrument. Nonetheless, its operation’s many facets need to be learned: which speed setting is recommended, which “hysteresis”, or speed deviation from the long-distance travel speed should be selected to save fuel when rolling across hilltops. The experienced trainers from OMNIplus have valuable tips and advice to share. But there are also very tangible items that are part of ExpertHandling Training, such as checking fluid levels and refill options, or dealing with snow chains and wheel changes. You learn how to quickly and securely exchange a lamp when you’re alone on the road, or if you decide to take advantage of a quiet moment to clean the air conditioning’s air filter. Error diagnosis is also addressed: how to respond to the various signals on the display, how the warning lights indicate levels of urgency and with which colours, what needs to be responded to immediately and what can be done at a later date? Since this is an intensive course, the number of participants is limited to a maximum of twelve. After all, each person has to be able to closely observe what’s being discussed, ask for details, and of course try out all the tips and tricks on offer. The better a driver knows their Setra, the more economically and sparingly they can drive it – and above all, more safely and in a more relaxed fashion. They can transport their passengers even more responsibly and identify even more strongly with their coach. And, perhaps best of all: ExpertHandling Training counts as a fully-fledged module of the advanced training according to the Professional Driver Qualification Act. It can also be combined with other training programmes, so that coach and bus drivers are ideally equipped to get the most from their Setra. More information is available at www.omniplus.com or through your sales representative. The new OMNIplus Training Center in Neu-Ulm Four training rooms with state-of-the-art media, two workshop halls with pits, column lifts and a brake test rig – the new OMNIplus Training Center on the Werk IV grounds in Neu-Ulm offers the best possible conditions for top training courses. Events for workshop employees are in the foreground, with topics ranging from error diagnosis to overhauling coach and bus frames. 40 | Setra Get-togethers Setra Get-togethers | 41 The classic coach collection – the Setra S 315 HDH: A lovingly cared for treasure The brand tradition is alive and well, in part thanks to the Setra classic coach collection and its perfectly maintained beauties. The latest addition to the historic collection is a 1996 Setra S 315 HDH – a “Coach of the Year 1993” winner, whose design and technology set standards at the time. I n following with a great tradition, this unique coach will continue to be the source of great pleasure in the Setra classic coach collection, where it will be cared for with enthusiasm and passion. This exclusive collection of 18 rare models impressively illustrates Setra’s history. For the public to enjoy when selected classic coaches take part in rallies. Or, when they are displayed at their most polished, recently at the Retro Classics show in Stuttgart. From the S 8, the very first Setra coach from 1951, through to this latest addition to the collection: a Setra S 315 HDH built in 1996. A comparatively young classic, but nonetheless a very special one. Had its previous owner, Swiss operator René Heiniger, kept the coach over all these years in a well-tempered hall, the S 315 HDH would hardly be in better condition today. With its impeccably maintained equipment and a gloss as flawless as on the day it was delivered. And yet it covered some 500,000 kilometres between its first registration in May 1996 and its journey to the Setra classic coach collection in Neu-Ulm last November. What type of lifestyle did the S 315 HDH enjoy with “Heiniger Carreisen” from Uster in the Canton of Zurich? Well, between April and October, it regularly travelled to Venice, Prague, Ljubljana and Copenhagen, in the summer to Lake Garda, or in the footsteps of William Tell over the Klausen Pass, as well as in many other parts of Europe. The Heiniger flagship coach was also given some extra special treatment: the 315 HDH was driven mainly by the boss himself. It was only ever washed by hand and was able to spend winters in an indoor hall. Although goodbyes are never easy, René Heiniger isn’t too sad, since he knows he is passing the S 315 HDH into caring hands. 1991: new design, new standards The 300 series plays a special role in the history of the Setra brand. When introduced in 1991, it set all-new standards that are still impressive today – as did the previous series. Its numerous customer-oriented innovations amazed even the experts. Perhaps more than anything, the innovative design of the coach’s bow was fascinating: with its lateral wings over the front axle which still shape Setra design today. And with the revolutionary integrated rear-view mirror system developed by Setra and baptised the “ladybug antenna” by trade show visitors. The new exterior mirrors not only gave the coach a distinctive look, they also provided all-round visibility – laterally as well as in the previously blind area in front of the vehicle. Just a quick look into the electrically adjustable mirror was needed for every coach driver to be persuaded of the system’s advantages. René Heiniger also quickly recognised the qualities of the new series: “When I saw the S 315 HDH and its development at the Neu-Ulm plant, I immediately knew that this would be my coach,” recalls the 59-year-old operator. Although the S 315 HDH was built on the concept of the predecessor model 200 series, the new 300 series was “reinvented”, especially in terms of its operation and maintenance. The multifunctional electronic display, used in a coach for the first time, informed the driver on the condition of all major systems. A notification was given automatically or by pressing a button on the steering column and signalled status with different colours: red for messages relating to road safety, and orange for those addressing operational safety. In addition to the standard six languages for text messages, further languages could be easily programmed. Unprecedented ease of maintenance Ease of maintenance played a major role in the design of the new Setra S 315 HD. Customer service staff and service technicians had greatly contributed to its evolution. This led to the development of an exceptionally service-friendly coach, which included some extras that were anything but expected at the time. Examples of this include the V-belt tension via compressed air, an easily removable front panel, or the easy access to the windscreen washer system. All error messages were automatically stored in a microprocessor, and could then be analysed and rectified in the workshop. Also, access to the engine was designed in a way that was more maintenance-friendly than ever before. Another great customer benefit was that, in spite of more extensive comfort fittings and safety equipment, the coach was not any heavier. This was achieved through computer-based structural optimisation of the materials used, in relation to the overall structural strength of the bus frame. Flower vases as special equipment The fact that the Setra 300 series was ahead of its time was confirmed in 1993 by a jury of journalists who honoured the coach with the coveted “Coach of the Year” award. The series’ sales success was equally impressive: no less than 1,686 units were sold by the time it was replaced with the 400 series in 2001. René Heiniger’s S 315 HDH coach later received additional extras such as a wide-angle front and rear camera, a video and DVD player, an induction loop auditive system for the hearing-impaired – and a vase of flowers on each window pillar. This was a special request from the service-oriented Swiss operator. “In this immaculate condition, you could still drive this coach anywhere today,” raved Ottmar Steiner, Setra’s chief mechanic for the classic coaches, during the handover of the S 315 HDH Setra to the collection. He was also delighted to have a little less work to do. The usual mandatory expert restoration can easily be postponed in the case of this classic coach which has been taken care of so passionately. Hello and goodbye: the S 315 HDH stays and Heiniger Carreisen’s new Setra S 415 GT-HD “Final Edition” heads home 42 | Setra Service & support Setra Get-togethers | 43 BusStore, the new pre-owned coach and bus brand from Daimler Buses: Tried. Furthermore, with the OMNIplus brand, BusStore customers have access to a unique range of services within a pan-European service network. Why should an operator buy a pre-owned coach or bus from BusStore? Mr Smits: What distinguishes BusStore are its dedicated coach and bus expertise, its predictably high quality and a multitude of services relating to pre-owned coaches and buses. Dr Neef: BusStore acts independently, purchases attractive pre-owned vehicles, which are not necessarily attached to new vehicle purchases. So it’s always worth speaking with BusStore first. Dr Neef, how will this higher market transparency be achieved? Dr Neef: With BusStore, the customers know what they get. We assign our vehicles into Gold, Silver and Bronze categories, according to very clear quality criteria – which is absolutely unique in the industry. For example, Gold vehicles are a maximum of three years old, have been driven up to 300,000 km, prepared with a high level of quality and have a warranty on their powertrain. Dr Bernhard Neef, Head of the European Pre-Owned Business Mr Smits, what motivated Daimler Buses to introduce the BusStore brand? Mr Smits: The objective was to independently reorganise our preowned coach and bus business in Europe. This is reflected in a separate, fourth Daimler Buses brand. BusStore encompasses all activities in Europe relating to pre-owned coaches and buses from Setra and Mercedes-Benz, as well as from competitive brands. Can you tell us more? Mr Smits: BusStore stands for partnership, integrity and significantly enhanced market transparency, since all our European pre-owned vehicle sites now form a well-connected network. The extensive offering includes several hundred pre-owned touring coaches, overland, city and minibuses from our Mercedes-Benz and Setra brands, as well as vehicles from other brands and manufacturers. But potential buyers look for pre-owned vehicles on the Internet as well, don’t they? Mr Neef: Of course. And our website www.bus-store.com offers access to hundreds of coaches throughout Europe with a single click. Thanks to clear search criteria such as type of application, make, model and first registration, you can get an overview of what’s available and very quickly find what you’re looking for. The site is laid out in eleven languages, with even more to follow. What additional services can BusStore offer? Dr Neef: On request we take over vehicle transfer and registration, or even customs clearance in the case of export. Through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, we offer customised financing and insurance. Individual service BusStore is at your service all across Europe Hans Smits, Head of Key Account Management & the European Pre-Owned Coach and Bus Business The ComfortClass 500 also scores in demanding shuttle services T Where can these pre-owned coaches and buses be purchased? Mr Smits: BusStore is present at 17 locations across Europe. This is very unique as well. What exactly can BusStore do better than others? Dr Neef: BusStore understands tomorrow’s pre-owned coach and bus market, and can bring together the right vehicle with the right prospective customer early on. For instance, we’re linked with new vehicle sales where trade-ins are agreed on. For trade-ins, we assume pricing, preparation and resale. On request, we also offer additional services such as deregistering a used coach. Ten S 517 HD for Brussels airport shuttle: The BusStore Show enjoyed a successful debut The long-standing IGOM International Used Bus & Coach Fair found a successful successor: the international BusStore Show. On the last weekend of February, the pre-owned coach and bus event – with its enhanced concept – celebrated a successful premiere. The show attracted close to 1,300 visitors from over 23 countries to Neu-Ulm on the site of the German BusStore facility adjacent to the EvoBus bus plant. The BusStore Show will be continued: in the future it will be held yearly just before the beginning of the travel season. he appeal of superb coaches to comfort-seeking travellers has also been recognised for economically challenging business applications – and tenders in the shuttle service sector are no exception. Outstanding safety and comfort are behind this increasing appeal. The latest example is Voyages Leonard, the largest Frenchspeaking tour operator in Belgium, and part of the Sales-Lentz Group in Luxemburg. The company successfully operates the 60-kilometrelong shuttle line between the Brussels Airport to the city and back. Under the name FLIBCO, ten white and blue Setra S 517 HD coaches have been in continuous use since July 2013. They run every half hour, from morning to night, 24 times a day. Up to 12,000 passengers are transported by coach every month, with an anticipated annual mileage of close to 280,000 kilometres. The ComfortClass 500, with its excellent fuel consumption and long maintenance intervals, scores brilliantly – especially at these high mileages. The Setra coaches are equipped with the latest safety systems: ABA2, ART, SPA and Attention Assist. The air conditioning system, in three performance versions, along with the inviting Voyage seats and generous storage space for luggage, ensure maximum passenger comfort. Modern Wi-Fi access is also available on board, free of charge. This level of comfort and service doesn’t necessarily have to cost travellers a lot. Tickets for the “low-cost shuttle” can be purchased for prices ranging from 5 to max. 22 euros, either on the Internet, as an iPhone app, at the ticket counter on site, or directly from the driver. The Brussels City Shuttle is a prime example of how the ComfortClass 500 can also successfully take on economically challenging business models, with its attractive lifecycle costs and full-fledged Setra values, such as reliability, robustness and durability. The financing concept is also very attractive: after 2.5 years and a total mileage of 700,000 kilometres, the shuttle coaches can be traded in for ten new S 517 HD coaches at the end of 2015. To date, an agreement for the supply of 30 ComfortClass 500 vehicles has been confirmed. 44 | Setra Travel in Style Setra Travel in Style | 45 Part two of Avanti’s world tour with the ComfortClass 500: A once-in-a lifetime adventure A record-breaking journey in 215 days: on board a Setra S 515 HD from Breisgau, Germany, to Tierra del Fuego, via Shanghai. In part two of our report, we look back on the longest coach trip in the world with tour operator and coach driver Hans-Peter Christoph. O ne of the most breathtaking passages along the Pan-American highway is located in Colombia just beyond Medellin: narrow, hairpin curves blasted into rock – and without guard rails – wind around deep abysses. Ancient bridges stretch over raging white water, and then steep ramps, sparkling in the bright sunlight, lead up to altitudes of 4,300 metres. A little later, we emerge from a wide sweeping descent into the wild nature of the humid, tropical jungle. Small buses and vans swarm like mosquitoes around the imposing, red Setra S 515 HD coach which Hans-Peter Christoph has driven from Freiburg all the way to South America via Shanghai. Avanti’s Managing Director honks the horn of the red giant, as is usually done here when overtaking, as he concentrates and passes by a truck convoy. The road clears once again. It’s days like this for which Christoph has been either sitting behind the wheel or looking after his tour group as host, organiser and entertainer during the stops. For which, over a three-year period, he applied for visas and custom documents from his office in Breisgau – reserving hotels, researching ferry schedules and even booking a round-trip flight. He has been on the road for 20 weeks. First through Turkey, Iran and the Central Asian steppes to China – where he had to undergo a local driving test and have his coach inspected and certified by the local Never before has a coach tour covered more than 52,000 kilometres across four continents. Technical Control Board. organisation. Then he embarked on the second segment of the journey through America, from the northern to the southern tip, where he also ran into a few complications. Following the shipment of the coach across the Pacific ocean from Shanghai to Alaska, the Setra S 515 HD was held by U.S. Customs. It was only three months later that the tour group was able to travel onwards in their own ComfortClass 500. In the meantime, they travelled in replacement coaches through to Colombia. But even this unexpected hurdle was unable to stop the exceptional marathon. Never before had a coach ventured on a journey that would cover a staggering 46 | Setra Travel in Style 52,000 kilometres, over four continents, six climatic zones, 26 countries – and along the Silk Road and Pan-American highway, the two perhaps most legendary routes on the planet. On the scheduled day of departure, more than just a few passersby believed that the Avanti coach with the “Freiburg – Tierra del Fuego, departure: Monday 8:00 clock” display panel was a belated April Fool’s joke. But Christoph managed to bring his vision to life. “I knew that this trip would be the absolute highlight of every driver’s life,” says Christoph who has been driving trucks and buses through Europe and the Middle East over the past 35 years. But what appeared to be a dream to bus drivers and passengers alike became a test of strength for the ComfortClass 500 – one that it passed with flying colours. On the many Turkmen potholes, where the optimised running gear proved its excellent suspension and ride characteristics. In the 42-degree-in-the-shade region of Turfan in Western China, one of the lowest points of the earth. Under extremely humid conditions in Cartagena, Colombia. And on the highest passes in the world. Even in the extremely thin Andean air, the coach’s 315 kW, 10.7-litre in-line six-cylinder engine performed its duty – reliably and powerfully. There was surprisingly little to do for Anatoli Reklin, the tour’s service technician. In Kazakhstan, the catalyst had burned out and needed replacing, and in Colombia, the particle filter had to be regenerated. In both cases, what caused problems were the low-grade fuels from Iran and China, whose residues became problematic during the coach’s 12-week customs odyssey. “Setra’s ComfortClass 500 S 515 HD coach is not only the safest and most low-emission model on the market, it’s also amazingly reliable,” says Christoph. “And that’s why we were able to travel according to plan on every single one of the tour’s 218 days. The only delay was my train from Frankfurt back to Freiburg.” Since Avanti deployed two drivers on every segment of the trip, a journalist from the Omnibusrevue magazine joined the group in South America behind the wheel of the Setra S 515 HD. Even this expert confirmed: “It didn’t make any difference to the coach where it was, it just ran and ran and ran.” Following shipment of the ComfortClass 500 to Alaska, the journey appeared to have come to the end of the road. The U.S. Customs at the Port of Tacoma refused to allow the brand-new Setra to travel onward. And even the Saint-Christopher medallion which Avanti’s Managing Director had mounted on the dash before departure couldn’t help. But Hans-Peter Christoph responded quickly and hired other coaches on site with which the group continued their tour. For Setra Customised | 47 twelve weeks, between Alaska and Colombia, the group travelled in a coach standard that would have been considered obsolete in Europe even 15 years ago. This was a test of patience that almost brought Christoph to his limit: “I was about to blow off the whole thing, but no one gave up and everyone encouraged me to carry on.” And the moment he was allowed to continue the trip in his Setra coach at the port of Cartagena, after twelve long weeks of uncertainty, is one that Christoph will always remember as being one of the trip’s most emotional highlights: finally taking a seat behind the wheel in his familiar cockpit. And, of course, seeing his passengers indulging in the luxurious comfort of the S 515 HD: with comfortable recliners, generous spacing between seats, vis-à-vis seating groups with tables, 230-volt outlets, and, not to forget, a high-performance air-conditioning system. The system was life-saving, perhaps now more than ever, since the most amazing scenic segment of the journey took the group through the hot, humid jungle – along the Pan-American highway through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina. A wild, 18,000-kilometrelong patchwork carpet. With at times bumpy dirt roads, at times paved streets, at times real highways, and for the most part welldeveloped motorways. And all along the way, there was hardly a single Latin American trucker that even regarded the motorway’s almost constant solid double yellow line. “On the other hand, fuel only costs about 20 cents a litre here,” laughs Christoph. “And the winding curves are a lot of fun.” On the last 700 kilometres through Patagonia, via ferry over the Strait of Magellan to Tierra del Fuego, the globetrotters became contemplative: the Setra S 515 HD only encountered two cars. Then, just before reaching the final destination, Christoph played Karel Gott, the German folk musician’s famous “Einmal um die ganze Welt” (transl.: Just once all around the world) through the speakers in the passenger compartment – although it’s not usually his kind of music. But now, he feels euphoric, grateful and relieved beyond measure. And although Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, is anything but a one-horse town, he has to fight back tears. After Christoph takes his driver’s card, for the very last time on this trip, from the Setra’s digital tachograph, he doesn’t need very long to regain his composure. His first thought: how tempting it would be to backtrack along this amazing journey. Another 215 days far away from home – but Christoph is able to put the brakes on his bus driver’s heart. Already though, in his imagination, new destinations, new landscapes and adventures are beginning to take shape. Hans-Christoph Peter knows for a fact that the idea of another world tour just won’t let go. In 2016, he would like to begin the next record-breaking tour around the globe. And, of course, once again with a great tour group and a very special coach ... A new rear box for the 500 series: A big box with room to spare The rear box for the new generation of coaches is spacious, ideal for year-round use and variably equipped. It will be offered in versions ideally suited to the ComfortClass 500 and TopClass 500. S ometimes even the most spacious luggage compartment is too small. And sometimes guests travel with luggage for which a special carrier would be more suitable, i.e. skis or snowboards. The new Type M ski box, exclusively made for Setra, is the answer to these passenger requirements. The box is made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) and is based on a sturdy metal frame. It measures 750 x 2,375 x 2,220 millimetres (length x width x height) and fits seamlessly into the lines of the new generation of coaches. It doesn’t even alter the coach’s exceptional aerodynamics – a key feature of the new 500 series. The ski box was tested directly on 500 series vehicles in the wind tunnel. The box offers storage space of about three cubic metres behind its swing-up, side-pivoting flap designed for easy loading. With its many equipment features, it can be used variably in six loading versions. The box’s basic equipment includes two rakes. Mounted vertically, they can carry up to 36 flat pairs of skis, and horizontal mounting enables up to 12 standing snowboards. With its additional storage system, it can also conveniently carry luggage. The ski box is a genuine all-rounder. A ready-made special equipment package includes a variety of aids for securing loads, including support braces, expanders, tightening straps and a safety net. Moreover, a hook-in ladder facilitates safe loading and unloading. The weight of the box is approximately 180 kg without the storage system, and its permissible total weight is 500 kilograms. If not used, it is mounted on level supports. For mounting the box to the coach, all that is required are the usual four bearings at the rear. The box can be mounted easily with the help of a forklift. A contact surface on the bottom of the ski box is provided for this purpose. Laterally integrated handles help to accurately position the box. The box is positioned at a distance of 80 millimetres to the rear of the coach. Therefore, ventilation of the engine compartment is not adversely affected. For checks or service work on the engine, the unloaded ski box, supported by a gas spring, can be pivoted to the side in a few steps and the engine cover can be opened. Due to the box’s dimensions, the view through the rear window remains unaffected. Optionally, Setra can provide a rear view camera integrated to the ski box for reversing. The ski box is available in two versions, each one respectively matched in design to the ComfortClass 500 or the TopClass 500. Technically, both models also fit the other coach series. Painting and lettering can be customised to specific requirements, so that the box is as individual as the coach itself. A well thought out and highly versatile carrying system: the ski box can hold either up to 36 pairs of skis or 12 snowboards
