‘We must win in Nelson’ - Azzurri manager
Luigi Troiani, Manager Squadra
Nazionale FIR (LTR), is really looking forward to having the people
of Nelson behind them throughout
RWC 2011.
“Nelson has an Italian community
and we hope that we have their
support. The Mayor is Italian, so
we will love to win the matches
here.”
Business guide updated
Once again Council has made
updates to the Business Opportunities Guide for RWC 2011.
You’ll find lots of useful information in the guide if you are a
business in the region hoping to

Italian Manager Luigi Troiani shown around Trafalgar Park by
Although assisted by an Italian to Shane Davies, NCC Senior Project Manager Major Projects.
English translater, Luigi frequently
answered questions in English, trying to immediately forge a bond with New Zealanders.
Impressed with Trafalgar Park’s recycled glass sand turf and the training venues,
including Saxton Field, Luigi says he “found the training venues good and the people demonstrated great hospitality.”
Team preparations for the Azzurri are going well - they feel particularly fortunate
they will be in Nelson because the weather is comparable to Italy. “I’m sure we’ll
like staying in Nelson, it’s like Italy.”
Luigi is particularly focused on the team’s games in Nelson against Russia and
the USA. “All the matches we play are hard, and the two matches in Nelson we
must win, there is much pressure on us. Every match is a story and each one gets
harder.”
He’s set his sights high though: “If we beat Australia, it’s all good. We hope to go
far, to have a good RWC.”
Keep up with the Azzurri

Of the 21,000 tickets made available to date for
Trafalgar Park’s two matches, 13,000 sold during
Phases 1 and 2.
An independent research company surveyed ticket
purchasers and results for Nelson are very positive.
Of the 45,000 FIT (free and independent travellers) surveyed, 15,500 expect to visit the Top of
the South. This doesn’t include the 30,000+ visitors
coming to New Zealand through the official travel
programme.
Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio says, “I’m beyond
ecstatic at the this news. Now we really have to
shift gears to encourage business readiness for the
thousands of visitors.”

Of those surveyed, 44% will be coming to New
Zealand for the first time and the average length
of stay is 23.3 days: Half the respondents will stay
between 15 and 35 nights.

Significant progress in 2010 •
•
Plans for RWC 2011 in Nelson have been underway
for more than two years, but last year saw Nelson
achieve a number of key milestones toward being a
great Tournament host.
• The Trafalgar Park upgrade was completed and
Tournament Organiser Rugby New Zealand 2011
Ltd (RNZ) has expressed great confidence in its
capability for RWC 2011.
• Coaches and managers from the three teams
we are hosting (Italy, USA, Russia) have visited
the region and scoped out Trafalgar Park, Saxton Field and training facilities as well as accommodation. They have also expressed confidence
and excitement about Nelson’s facilities.
• The Game On Festival was launched on 9 September and includes three confirmed and five yet
to be confirmed community events, alongside
several Council events.
• Temporary seating at Trafalgar Park for 13,000
has been booked to go on the west side, the
south side, and in front of the eastern stand,
•
•
•
which will not be in use for either match.
One 40m big screen TV has been booked for
Trafalgar Park to sit on the embankment and
another 20m big screen for the Nelson Fanzone.
Tasman is organising plans for its Fanzone at
the Motueka Recreation Centre.
The Italian Team welcome plans are underway.
Council and RNZ recruited 265 volunteers
heading toward a total of 350 - register now at
www.rugbyworldcup.com/volunteers
Saxton Field has had fibre optic cabling installed
to enhance media needs for training coverage
Saxton Field’s primary football field has had
a drainage upgrade – a planned maintenance
project that will benefit the sporting codes as
well as meet RWC 2011 team training requirements
A temporary traffic management plan is in place,
approved by NZTA and RNZ 2011, with very
positive feedback from National Police HQ.
