But first, let’s take a look back at the outstanding spring we enjoyed at Saugahatchee! • WELCOME to the 19 New Members who joined in the first quarter. • I can see clearly now that the HAZE has gone! ...from the windows, that is! We have new windows in the Dining Room, Dogwood Room, Entrance, and Pro Shop where the seals had broken causing a “hazy” appearance. Now, we can enjoy the beauty that surrounds us at Saugahatchee! • Thank you to the 350 people who shared Easter with us! It was an outstanding day at the Club. The food was fabulous, and the fellowship even better! We hope you and your family enjoyed it as much as we did. • Our spring golf tournaments, “Spring Handicap” and “Member-Member”, were successes and well attended. Thanks to all who participated! • Lobster Night was a big success and our Thursday Theme Nights continue to be very popular! • Wine-O continues to impress. This Saugahatchee favorite will return in the fall. • We reached the “500” milestone in membership! This is the first time since 2008 we’ve had 500 members! A big thank you to our veteran Members for the warm welcome shown to the newer Members. • All “Cooking with Trey” classes SOLD OUT! Participants left enlightened, happy, and full of wine and food! • SPECIAL THANKS to outgoing Board Members Russ Stone, Drew Burkhalter, and Pamela Boyd, who have been instrumental leaders and great contributors to your Club over the last few years! • We REDESIGNED AND EXPANDED SUNDAY BRUNCH to increase appeal. And, children 12 & under EAT FREE! Attendance is up 57%! • Returned to mailing hard copy newsletters to all Members to keep you better informed. Saugahatchee will be running at full throttle this summer. Here’s a sampling of what we have planned. • Design of Upstairs Dining Renovations will be here soon! WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE DONATIONS WE HAVE RECEIVED AND ARE SEEKING TO ADD MORE! • Pool Opens Saturdays & Sundays starting May 7th. “Swim at your own risk” until Memorial Day. • Pool Opens with full service beginning Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, May 27th. • Thursday 9-Hole Golf League started April 28th and includes hors d’oeuvres afterwards! • PGA Junior League has arrived! It’s like little league for Golf! Come join the SCC team! • Still have a few slots for our June 14th-17th Summer Kids’ Discovery Camp. • Memorial Day Buffet & Golf Tournament. Of course, this is all possible because of the loyal and passionate membership of Saugahatchee Country Club. As always, thank you for your continued support! See you at the Club! 11:00 am - 1:30 pm $16.95++ Adult 12 and Under eat free Craft Beer Corner OLD RASPUTIN FROM NORTH COAST BREWING COMPANY. This is a fine Russian Imperial Stout - what I call a sipping beer at 9% abv a rich beer with flavors of coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, and a hint of smokiness. It’s truly one of the King of Beers. Replacing clubhouse windows. 3 | SMOKE SIGNAL SAUGAHATCHEE COUNTRY CLUB FROM THE GREEN COMMITTEE Dear Members, This is an exciting time of year for golfers. We see the green start to replace the brown and the ground start to dry from the winter rains as we move into summer and the temperatures rise. Our golf course will soon start to flourish with the 85 degree days and 60 degree nights. I love the smell of fresh cut grass! I would like to share some course maintenance items that will be taking place during May and June and work that has been recently completed: • Planting of summer annuals around Clubhouse and Pool. • Aerifing Tees, Fairways and Rough. • Greens Program- Vertical Mowing, Topdressing will be in full swing. • Continue to fertilize weaker areas of turf in all areas of course. • Replace or add new sod to worn areas and areas that are bare or never had sod. This project is ongoing all year. • All fertilizer and pre-emerge has been applied to course. • Bunkers are an on-going project. We are going to try some new fabric around the slopes of bunkers that should help hold the sand up and help keep the clay from being exposed and ruining our bunkers. • Cart Paths- We have a plan to repair the path on 8 under the trees and get drainage to the area. There are several other cart path areas that will be addressed. • Continue to look for best way for walkers to carry sand to fill divots. • There have been azaleas planted behind # 1 which should add to that hole in the future. • Continue efforts to maintain the edges of the lake. • More drainage was added over winter which is making a big difference after rains. • New Rough Mowers added. You will see a dramatic difference in the height consistency of the rough this year. • New Topdressing machine. Great addition. Please, Please!!! Remember to fill your divots and any others you see, as it helps our course to stay healthy. Also fix your ball marks and any others on the greens. We continue to have a number of Members that think they can drive wherever and whenever they want on the golf course. This issue is moving more to the fore front of complaints from other golfers that witness this. Please drive in and out of the fairways at the green post. We are working diligently to make our Tee Box areas look great and pulling off onto the grass at Tees serves no purpose. Please drive on the paths, not half on and half off. Part of our Golf Professional’s job is Course Management. This includes managing tee times, pace of play, golf cart rules, dress codes and all other golf etiquettes. The Green Committee will be working with and supporting Charlie in this area. For a good refresher on golf etiquette please go to www.pga.com/ golf-instruction/instruction-feature/fundamentals/golf-etiquette. Our goal is for Guests who come to Saugahatchee to play golf to arrive knowing that we have rules that will be enforced, will show respect for our course and be excited about playing Saugahatchee. This respect will only come by the example set by our Members. Thank you for your continued support of the Green Committee and the Golf Course Maintenance Team. See you on the Course, David Scott Green Committee Chair 4 | SMOKE SIGNAL TENNIS CLINICS MIKE VOYLES DIRECTOR OF TENNIS INSTRUCTION 334.749.6705 ADULTS Women’s Beginning Clinic Women’s Intermediate Women’s Intermediate Doubles League Men’s League Women’s Intermediate JUNIORS 1st, 2nd, 3rd Grades 4th-6th Grades 4-year olds Thursday Monday Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday Friday 10:30 am-11:30 am $40/month 9:30 am– 10:30 am $35/month 9:30 am– 10:30 am $35/month 10:30 am– 12:00 pm No Fee 6:30 am – 7:30 am 9:30 am—10:30 am $35/month Monday T/Thur Thur 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm $40/month 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm $40/month 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm $35/month T/Thur 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm $80/month T/Thur Saturday 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm 7:30 am to 9:00 am $80/month JUNIOR HIGH Intermediate Competitive Clinic ADVANCED Competitive Clinic Group tennis lessons paid in advance ~ private lessons billed in arrears. 24 hour cancellation policy. 5 | SMOKE SIGNAL Easter at t h e Clu b 6 | SMOKE SIGNAL Mother’s Day Brunch!
