The Germania annual meeting is almost here, so now is the time for our
members to consider who will lead the club toward our second 160
years. One thing is for certain – the club can‟t run its self!
There are positions open on the Executive Board and as Trustees. These
are vital positions charged with the responsibility of making the
important decisions that will guide the club into the future. Contact
Gisela Hetherington or me to discuss your future role in the Club.
Please consider YOUR future role in the club. Maybe you are ready to
step up to a leadership position. If you are not quite ready for that role,
please strongly consider becoming a part of a standing committee.
There is plenty of work to be done by every member. Buildings and
Grounds, Rentals, the Bar Committee, Event planning, kitchen and
more all need volunteers to keep us going.
Plans for Oktoberfest are well under way. I am working out details with
WDST radio to help market the event this year. WDST is confident that
they will be able to gain the help of a couple major (German oriented)
businesses. That combination will help to air a series of promotional
spots on the station to draw more patrons. More patrons mean more
success for the event, but it also means we need you to volunteer.
Attendance was up last year and should increase again this year so
please sign up!
Bring your personal calendar to the annual meeting on Saturday June
18, 2011. The volunteer book will make its much anticipated debut at
that night thanks to Karen Rose. Please sign up for multiple spots to
help your club during this major fund raiser. We rely on the income!
Volunteering is a great deal. You work a bit and for your trouble you
get to meet thousands of happy Oktoberfest patrons, you get in for
nothing, eat for free, and then enjoy a couple of free beers while you
enjoy the Fest. On top of all that fun you will have helped Germania
succeed! The Oktoberfest Committee will continue to meet on the 4th
Tuesday of each month. We meet at 7:30 PM to plan the details for this
year‟s Fest. Please join us.
Now, more than ever Germania needs your help. Please attend the
Annual meeting to learn more about what YOU can do to help. See you
then!
IMPORTANT NOTICE!
THE ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE TAKING PLACE ON SATURDAY, JUNE
18TH PROMPTLY AT 7:30PM. Arrive at 7pm to greet your friends and get your seats and drink before the
meeting. There will be openings of 5 members to become a Trustee for a two-year term, and as always the
election of five members of the Executive Board. NOT ALL OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD AND
TRUSTEES UP FOR RE-ELECTION ARE ABLE TO ACCEPT RUNNING AGAIN, SO WE DO HAVE
VACANCIES TO FILL! Please, anyone that is interested in running for any position, please send an email to
Nominating Chairperson Gisela Hetherington at [email protected] or call and leave a message at 845-4549849. Due to the uncertainty of Gisela‟s travel to Germany, if you cannot reach her please call election
committee members Herb Wenskus, 845-297-4688 or Joe Ulrich 845-380-7925.
Your support is needed at this annual meeting either to vote for the best person for the job, nominate someone
for a position or to fill a vacancy yourself; also, attending meetings is the best way to stay informed of the
club‟s operations, events and financial status, and a good place to meet fellow members and take an opportunity
to thank the Board, Committee Chairpersons and volunteers for their hard work and dedication. We hope to see
you June 18th
GERMANIA‟S CONVERSATIONAL GERMAN and GERMAN GRAMMAR language classes are coming to
an end. We wish to thank Frau Karen Wagner for a great six months of teaching our small class and we wish
her the best with her move to the Albany area. Please come back and visit us for any of our many events here at
Germania.
Germania Golf Cart History and Beautification Upgrades – by Cal Baker
Phase 1 (October 2010) - This Golf Cart was given to the Germania Club at the end of 2009 after Oktoberfest
by John Jorgensen and family. Thanks again John. Our use of this cart is many fold: ground keeping, shuttling
back and forth between the pavilion and the clubhouse, but most of all it‟s used extensively during the week of
Oktoberfest for fest setup and removal and around the clock use during the 3 days of the festival. During the
summer our power source (batteries) for the cart went bad. Funds for the batteries were not available in time for
the Oktoberfest; to meet this challenge a special Family Rescue fund was set up. A Special Thanks to the many
Families that came to the rescue of our Golf Cart. Sufficient Funds were collected and the batteries and cables
were replaced by the Building Committee. We hoped in the near future for other projects to spiff up this great
Cart.
Phase 2 (May 2011) - Good news!
Several
new
changes
were
implemented on the Club‟s Golf Cart
and were available for review at the
membership
meeting
held
on
05/17/11. All upgrade costs have
and/or will be donated for these
projects: new paint job, new window,
welding and frame restoration and all
new stainless hardware where
possible. A Special thanks to the “FINISH LINE”, Chris Dolan and his band of diligent workers. Thanks!!
Also thanks to Herb Wenskus and Cal Baker for project coordination and mechanical upgrades.
Editor‟s Note: Wow! It screams German pride… the paint job is great!
REMINDERS:
HOW TO VOLUNTEER: If you can work a Friday dinner, a Biergarten or any of our other calendar events,
please call Gisela Hetherington 845-454-9849 or Virginia Wagner 845-462-0243 with your name, phone
number and date or dates you are available. These volunteers include set up, clean up, cashier, plating food,
food preparation, waiter/waitress and dishwashing. Other areas of need for volunteers include being a monitor
at rentals, weeding the gardens, spring cleanup in basement and at pavilion, general cleaning, and more.
Leave a message at the clubhouse 845-471-0609 to let us know how you can help your club.
We do not have even half of our 425 members registered to receive this bi-monthly newsletter electronically!
April’s postage expense was over $300 and a similar amount is spent each month on postage. Please consider
receiving your newsletter and the photographs throughout in clear full color. This is the best way to get the
news first, and help your club save on postage and photocopy expense. Please take a few moments to
sign up for the newsletter via email by going to our club website, www.GermaniaPok.com, click on the
button on the left called “Newsletter”, click the grey box that says Email Me the Newsletter and follow the two
(2) steps: one to register your name and mailing address and one to register your email.
NOTE: Editor has received four undeliverable newsletter messages. If you change your email address, please
remember to register your new email so that you can keep the newsletter coming. Unfortunately the members
with undeliverable newsletters are not getting it on email or in the mail… if you hear of someone like this let
them know to register their new email address.

Do you have a FUNDRAISING IDEA that is not food service driven? Jon Wagner has announced at several
meetings that he is open to new ideas for events and fundraisers. Come to the membership meetings to give
your idea or call Jon at 845-635-9009.
LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR SUNSHINE LADY – by Janett Frank
The following members are still on our sick list and we wish them all the best: HELEN SCHIMPF (who
recently was hospitalized), ED BLATZ, HERMAN BRILL, FRAN KALBLE, and BRUNO GROETSCHEL
(who was also recently hospitalized). We have also recently learned that ED BAUER‟s health has taken a turn
for the worse. Our prayers are with all of you.
March was a very sad month for Germania members and our sincerest condolences goes to all of the families. It
began with the announcement of the passing of KARL W. BEUMER on March 10th. Karl was a 25 year
Honorary Member and two years short of reaching his 50 year membership. Karl was also a long time active
member of the men‟s chorus and the men and ladies chorus. He is survived by his wife, Elsa, and two
daughters.
Karl‟s death was followed EDDIE BERGER‟s death on March 23rd in Orange City, Florida (please see
obituary within this newsletter).
Word was then received on the passing of OTTO MAHN on March 24th. Otto was recently honored as a 25
year member. Most of us remember Otto as a butcher and owning and operating the Fishkill Pork Store with
his lovely wife Melita. Many of Germania‟s members purchased Karl Ehmer products and wonderful imported
German goods from Otto and Melita. Otto and Melita would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on
November 26th this year. Otto is survived by his daughter Susan and her husband Gary, his son Michael and
wife Barbara, his two grandsons and two sisters Christa and Marga in Germany. Otto will be missed by many
of his friends from Germania.
MAGDA BISZICK, wife of deceased member John Biszick, passed away On April 5th. She is survived by a
son and daughter and 5 grandchildren. Even though John had passed away in 2004, Magda continued to support
Germania and could be seen at many affairs especially with her good friends, Vroni and Hugo Fueglein.
MARILYN SALA, mother of member and BOCES Chef Instructor Darcy Sala, died suddenly on April 27th.
She leaves her husband, daughters Darcy Sala, daughter Lynn Margiotta and one grandchild.
MEMBERS IN THE NEWS: Hope you didn‟t miss the great picture of member JEFF CONTELMO and his
wife Sharon as they crossed the finish line at the 41st Annual Wappingers Creek Water Derby on Saturday,
April 30th.
Last but not least, if you haven‟t had the chance yet to purchase or review the POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL‟S
THE MID-HUDSON VALLEY THROUGH OUR EYES, Volume I, and Volume II, you will spot many
pictures of members and groups of Germania in both books. These books are very interesting if you wish to
know more about the Mid-Hudson Valley‟s History.
MORE MEMBERS IN THE NEWS AND OTHER TIDBITS
Poughkeepsie Journal featured an article on March 30th about a Wappingers Falls man that is touring the world as a
production manager for one of the hottest bands in rock, Grammy winner for Album of the Year for „The Suburbs‟,
Arcade Fire… and that Poughkeepsie High School graduate that oversees the technical side of Arcade Fire‟s live stage
show is STEVE GORDON. The lengthy article is an interesting read, so check it out online. Steve‟s parents, Jim &
Bobbie, are members of Germania and Steve is a past member of Germania and of the Germania Almrausch
Kindergruppe. Congratulations to Steve, his beautiful wife Anne-Michelle Radcliffe and Bobbie & Jim for this terrific
write-up and on Steve‟s continued success.
You can read the whole article at Germania‟s Website,
www.GermaniaPok.com or at www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/blogs and click on “Sonic Storm” to learn more.
The Five Boro Bike Tour was held May 1, 2011 and among the cyclists was
Germania members ROBERT ROSE, MIKE REICHERT and GERT-JAN
DOEDEE, their fourth year doing this tour together. Pictured are the guys
having an ice cold beer at the Hofbräuhaus in NYC after biking more than 40
miles!
TAX RAFFLE WINNERS: The following were the lucky $100.00 winners of
the March 2011 Tax Raffle: Ed Kelley, William Polgrean, Gert & Trudy
Wegner, Eric Lehner, Christine Pattantyús, Fr. Michael Palazzo, Bob Hlavaty
and Walter Werner Gross. Congratulations! In spite of the bad economy, the tax raffle income this year was $270 higher
than in March of last year. Many thanks go to all who participated in the raffle, with special thanks to Klara Erdt, John &
Gert Reifenberger, Ray Skov and Fred Siemer for their generous donations, and to Carol Ann & Ed Fischer, Brad Forrest,
Barbara Lang Hutchison and John & Elizabeth Germiller for their additional contributions. Germania is fortunate to have
so many caring and supportive members. Thank you all!
While only 63 guests attended the annual FRUGLINGS GALA, this formal affair netted $2,149 for Germania. Great job
Gala Committee!
In June of 2012, the Germania Men & Ladies Singers will host the semi-annual SAENGERFEST right here at Germania!
This event will be a large undertaking and it will be important to show our support because our foundation is built on the
singing society that was founded over 160 years ago! We will need many volunteers, mainly in the food service area, over
a three day festival event. Details will be available soon and we hope we can count on you to volunteer.
This picture of Dutchess County BOCES chef instructor (and Germania member)
DARCY SALA and three of her students appeared on Poughkeepsie Journal‟s website,
Week's Photos 5/10 - 5/17. Picture number 15 for that week shows them harvesting basil
at the aquaponics garden on May 11, 2011. What is aquaponics? I wanted to know too. It
is a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture (raising
aquatic animals such as fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating
plants in water) in an environment where the two relationships depend on each other.
SUMMER DANCE CLASSES (5 weeks) - A five-week session of ballroom and swing classes will be offered at
Germania with dance instructors Esther and Ben. (The instructors are Dance Masters and members of the New York
Society of Teachers of Dancing.) For information contact: Esther 635-3341, [email protected]

The REICHERT FAMILY welcomed their 15-year old exchange student, Elena Goerner, from Salzhausen in northern
Germany. She arrived April 1st and left for home on the 20th. Elena and Alexandra enjoyed a variety of school events,
shopping and site seeing. This is a wonderful experience for Alex, and she is looking forward to her trip to Germany to
stay with Elena‟s family, and we are looking forward to hearing all about it!

In Memory of Edward C.W. Berger (1931 - 2011)
Edward Charles William Berger, a resident of Orange City, Florida, died on March 23, 2011 at age 79.
Born May 13, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Edward Berger and Else Emilie HoyerBerger. As a member of the US Navy, he was an electrician aboard the U.S.S. Alsea, ATF 97; he also
organized the ship's reunions. Mr. Berger was employed by Daystrom Electric Corporation and also IBM,
for 25 years in the electronics and engineering departments. He is survived by his daughter, Joanna Fuchs
and son-in-law Patrick of Hyde Park; cousins, Rolf Bobrink Sr. and wife, Urzel, of Lilienthal, Germany,
and Rolf Bobrink Jr. and wife, Sabine, of Grasberg, Germany; former wife, Anna Marie Berger of Hyde
Park; and close childhood friends, Doris Wheeler of Conyers, Georgia, and her sister, Marilyn Luhmann
and husband, Charles, of Rosendale, NY.
He was one of the eight founding members of the Germania Almrausch Schuhplattler Verein as recorded at the dance
club‟s first official meeting in January 1970. He was also a member of the Germania Singing Society of Poughkeepsie,
the German American Society of Casselberry, Florida and of the American Legion and VFW. Ed became a Bavarian
yodeler and loved being a German entertainer doing the Schnitzelbank as Professor Kleine Teufel in the New York
Catskills. In Florida, he was a singer with the Katzenjammer Jungs and performed with the Schneebrunzer Kapelle with
the von Knoblauch Orchestra. Ed enjoyed playing his harmonica, accordion, cowbells and the teufelsgeige and most of
all, making people laugh. He had a love for animals and his hobbies included HO trains, photography, camping and
skiing. Eddie always stopped in at the Germania club when he traveled to New York for a visit.
Memorial visitation was held April 15, 2011 at Sweet's Funeral Home in Hyde Park. Burial with military honors followed
in the family plot in Union Cemetery of Hyde Park. In lieu of flowers, it was asked that memorial donations be made to
Germania of Poughkeepsie, 37 Old Degarmo Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.

SUBJECT TO HAVING ENOUGH MEMBER VOLUNTEERS
CHORAL CORNER by Pat Kemmerer
The Men & Ladies Singers participated in the Good Friday (Kar- Freitag) Services on
Friday, April 22nd at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and attendance was very good.
On March 24th, 2011, the singers appeared with the “Vanavar Caravan” Foreign Language
Assembly at Wappingers Junior High School. Since the Almrausch did not have anyone
available to dance during the day, we were referred to the organizer and we sang two sets between the
Mexican Hat Dance and the Famingo during 8th and 9th period. Many thanks to our director Helga Baker, and to
Gisela Hetherington, Janett Frank, Dorothy Ferry, Elizabeth Calabrese, Pat Kemmerer, Philip Nicholson,
Hansheinrich Franzen and Helmut Loibl.
The Annual Spring Concert was held on April 30th, AMERICA THROUGH GERMAN EYES in the 1950’s. We
began the journey in the East and ended with a Hula in Hawaii with Renate and Janett as our dancers
(complete with hula skirts). The Singers dressed as cowboys and cowgirls giving a German version of Country
Music. We had a great time. Special thanks to Helga Nowak Razey, Barbel Zehnbauer and Jo Pragman for
decorating – great job! Also, special thanks to our Kinderchor (they were wonderful as always), our director
Helga Baker, our pianist Katherine Ulrich, our violinists George & Elizabeth Calabrese, our accordionist Janett
Frank and our soloists Hansheinrich Franzen and Helga Nowak Razey. The roast beef dinner was cooked by
Margarethe Killmer and Monica Jorgensen and it was delicious. Thank you also to the entire kitchen volunteers
(dishwasher, helpers, servers and carriers). Dancing to the zither music of Reinhold Wiedemann made for a
great ending to the day.
We will be singing at Germania’s Oktoberfest September 10th and 11th and at Tymour Park on September 18th.
Until then, have a healthy and safe summer.
SCHUHPLATTLER NEWS.
Germania Almrausch invites you to come and watch our
rehearsals, and would be happy for you to join our group. The Kindergruppe (Children’s group)
practices at 7:30 followed by the adults at 8:30; call for schedule 845-452-6360.
As this newsletter goes to print, our Kindergruppe will be going to the 18th annual Mid-Atlantic Kinderfest on
June 4th, this year hosted by our Patenverein, Edelweiss-Passaic, in New Jersey. Then, the kids will be
working hard to prepare for the upcoming dance season which will kick off at the Germania Oktoberfest.
As for the adult group, we are hanging in there in spite of the resignation of 3 members in 2010 and one in
2011, one member on a medical leave and one on an education leave, and three members recovering from
knee surgeries! We are a small group, but we are a family and we continue to promote Bavarian culture and
preserve Tracht through Schuhplattler dancing, and we enjoy the camaraderie of fellow Trachtlers and our
friends at Germania. And although we may only be able to put 2-4 couples on the dance floor these days, we
are looking forward to the Oktoberfest season and seeing all of our family, friends and supporters in the crowd.
Until then, have a wonderful summer!

I would like to apologize to two of our Honoree's, Peter Pressmar and Jan Adamiak for not having their pictures
in our last newsletter. Somehow they were omitted and I am truly sorry. The picture of Mike Killmer, our other
Honoree, was in the April newsletter. Congratulations to you again and Peter, I hope you had a wonderful trip to
Germany. Jan, I am glad to have seen you back at the club on some of our functions. Here are the pictures and
thanks again to you and all the friends that came out that night and helped us celebrate your milestone.
EDITOR‟S NOTE: I received a variety of pictures from both the membership dinner and Fasching but did not realize
there was hope for every photo to be published; the oversight was not intentional and due to lack of space.
