The Żuławy Association (Stowarzyszenie Żuławy) is the
self-governing lobby organization of the area that tries to
influence decisions concerning our region made by the
government, local authorities as well as other administrative bodies and institutions. It is a forum for cooperation
and promotion of the Vistula Delta. There are more than
20 members of the association – self-governments of towns,
communes and counties of the Żuławy region. It is the organizer and host of an annual competition held to ascertain the

Żuławy [ʒuˈwavı] at the delta of the Vistula River is a region which for ages has
justly paid back dividends for its wise management, efficient water and meliorative technology and high standards in agriculture. There is no other place in Poland which combines amazing landscapes, incredible nature and wildlife, multinational history as well as cultural heritage in such a wonderful manner.
Żuławy is a region more endowed with historic monuments
of Material Culture than any other region of Poland. Villages and
rural settlements, perfectly preserved and quite often of mediaeval origin, are highly valuable. The architecture of arcaded
houses reached a pinnacle of its development in Żuławy. The
wooden or brick houses, featuring a frame construction with
the intricately designed arcade supported by several pillars, give
the architecture a unique character. Dutch homesteads, situated
on specially built mounds called terp, present a great opportunity for learning and discovery. The Żuławy region also holds
an exceptionally large amount of sacred objects and sites of
worship. Brick Gothic country churches and their ruins, as well
as extraordinary Post-Mennonite cemeteries, arouse one’s admiration. Numerous hydrotechnical structures, such as canals,
sluices, dykes, and swing and lift bridges, are a real visual treat.
The cuisine of the Żuławy region is a delicious fusion of both local and foreign traditions maintained in families and restaurants.
Its high standard is significantly influenced by a wide variety of
local, high quality animal and crop products, as well as freshwater and sea fish. Long ago, the cuisine of Żuławy was developed
through the influence of the middle class societies of that time,
particularly those of Gdańsk and Elbląg. The best traditions of
Polish cuisine are enriched with old day, local, culinary customs
brought by settlers arriving after World War II. Machandel savouring, which has been known for ages, is nowadays a distinctive
feature of many ceremonies and events in Gdańsk and Żuławy.
Natural heritage. The final parts of the terminal branches of
the Vistula River in its delta and the remaining area of a natural
riparian forest situated on the fork of the Vistula and Nogat are
protected by a nature reserve. A bigger forest complex, a part
of Vistula Spit Landscape Park, is situated in the north part of
Żuławy, along beautiful Baltic beaches. Żuławy region’s clean
rivers are home to an extensive beaver population. Standing
waters are covered with water fern – Salvinia natans, commonly
known as floating moss. Approximately 70% of all bird species,
which have their nesting places in Poland, nest in this region.
This is made possible by the abundance and diversity of the
region’s water reservoirs. Drużno Lake National Reserve, the last
remaining relic of the original range of the Vistula Lagoon, is a
wonder of nature on a European scale.
Everything is in close proximity. The businesses and transportation infrastructure of Gdańsk’s Metropolitan Area is easily
and quickly accessible. The tourist attractions of Gdańsk, Sopot,
Malbork, Frombork and even Kaliningrad (in Russia) can be
reached in a short amount of time. The capital of Żuławy – Nowy
Dwór Gdański – is situated 40km away from the Gdańsk city
centre. The A1 motorway runs along the western outskirts of
Żuławy. The S7 clearway goes through Elbląg and Nowy Dwór
Gdański on its route from Warsaw to Gdańsk. These two routes
are joined by the south-east ring road of Gdańsk.
