ANTHROPOID
Period photograph of the turn in Holešovice
1
V Holešovičkách, the turn between Zenklovova Street
(in 1940–1945 Kirchmaierovou) and V Holešovičkách Street
Klein-Holleschowitz, Kirchmaierstraβe
Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš came there before 09:00 on 27 May
1942, probably from the flat of the Khodls in Vysočany or from the
Ogouns in Dejvice.
At 10:35, the black Mercedes 320C with the registration plate SS-3
driven by SS-Oberscharführer Johannes Klein had to slow down in the
turn. Reinhard Heydrich was sitting next to the driver. Josef Gabčík
and Jan Kubiš were ready to attack the car, but Josef Gabčík’s Sten
sub-machine gun probably failed. Reinhard Heydrich commanded
the driver to stop and pulled out his weapon. At that moment, a bomb
thrown by Jan Kubiš exploded above the running board in front
of the rear right wheel of the car. The explosion smashed through
the coachwork and ripped the door from its hinges. Reinhard Heydrich
was injured by a fragment of the bomb.

Hans Ulrich Geschke, commander of the Prague Gestapo, and
K. H. Frank arrived at the venue about an hour after the attack.
The Gestapo were searching the surroundings of the place until the
afternoon, and attempted to carry out a reconstruction. Gestapo photographer Adolf Dauer took pictures of the venue of the assassination.

The original turn ended up below the level of the surrounding new
flyover during a reconstruction, and the whole place looks completely
different today.
A respectable memorial was only built on the venue of this event
in 2009.

A randomly passing van of Holan company with the registration plate
PD-46.301 was stopped by Constable Michal Lofergyuk. Together with
the driver, František Šitta, and his assistant, Theodor Šulc, they transported the injured Deputy Protector to the hospital Na Bulovce. Reinhard
Heydrich himself came to the surgery, where he was examined by
MUDr. Karel Jarolímek, and was hospitalised in Pavilion No. 5. He was
immediately operated by two German physicians, Prof. Walter Dyck
and Prof. Josef Holbaum, who were assisted by MUDr. Alois Honěk as

anaesthesiologist. The pavilion was then cleared out and guarded by SS
units. Reinhard Heydrich died there at 09:00 on 4 June 1942. According
to the autopsy report, he died from damage to his vital organs caused by
bacteria or their toxins.
All of the protectorate newspapers and magazines inform of the death
of the Deputy Reich Protector
