At 10:35, the black Mercedes 320C with the registration plate SS-3 driven by SS-Oberscharführer Johannes Klein had to slow down in the turn. Reinhard Heydrich was sitting next to the driver. Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš were ready to attack the car, but Josef Gabčík’s Sten sub-machine gun probably failed. Reinhard Heydrich commanded the driver to stop and pulled out his weapon. At that moment, a bomb thrown by Jan Kubiš exploded above the running board in front of the rear right wheel of the car. The explosion smashed through the coachwork and ripped the door from its hinges. Reinhard Heydrich was injured by a fragment of the bomb. 120 Anthropoid_130x200_anglictina_04.indd 120 6.4.2016 15:02:17 Event, escape and crypt Driver D ri e JJohann h Klein then pursued urs rsue u d flflee ue eeing e in ee ingg Jo Jose Josef sse ef Ga G Gabčík bčík bč ík to Na Zápalčí Street while Jan nK Kubiš, ubiš ub išš, in inju injured ju ure ed by tthe he ee explosion, xplo xp lo losi osion on,, was escaping for Libeň on a bi bicycle. l Hans Ulrich Geschke, commander of the Prague Gestapo, and K.
