Rare maps debut at History Center
More than 150 maps from the 16th century through today chart six centuries in
the Sunshine State
A decade after Columbus sailed across the
Atlantic, explorers were still speculating about the
contours of the New World. Today’s experts
remain uncertain about when, exactly, Europeans
first set foot in La Florida, but by 1511, a historian
named Pieter Martyr labeled the unknown land
north of Cuba “Isla de Beimeni,” the native
Indian name for what is now Florida.
Martyr’s hand-drawn sketch is just one of more
than 150 maps featured in Charting the Land of
Flowers: 500 Years of Florida Maps, on exhibit now
in the History Center’s Wayne Thomas Gallery.
One of the most comprehensive exhibitions of
Florida cartography ever presented, Charting the
Land of Flowers traces six centuries of Florida
history, bringing together maps from museum and
library collections around the world, many are on
view to the public for the first time.
The exhibit offers audiences a rare opportunity
to see the world as early European explorers saw
it, and to watch the peninsula that would become
one of the South’s most populous states evolve
before their eyes. They’ll see that much of the
earliest European exploration of North America
occurred not in New England, but in Florida and
the Southeast, while early railroad maps and
tourist brochures vibrantly illustrate Florida’s
transformation into one of America’s top tourist
destinations.

Charting features rare maps from the Library of
Congress, on view to the public for the first time.
They include a manuscript map from 1639, and
another of what was once referred to as East
Florida, from 1823. Other maps and objects on
loan to the History Center include the first known
map of Tampa, from 1838, from the Matheson
Museum in Gainesville; a 1780 printing plate on
loan from the Florida Historical Society; the
earliest known map of St. Petersburg from the
St. Petersburg Museum of History, and an early
plat of Ybor City from USF Libraries Special and
Digital Collections.
“This really is a one-of-a-kind show,” said
Saunders Foundation Curator of History Rodney
Kite-Powell. “In terms of the scope of the
exhibition – it actually begins in the 15th century
and continues into the 21st, so, technically, it
covers seven centuries – and the quality of the
maps presented, it’s a very special and comprehensive exhibition that we are quite proud of.”
Kite-Powell and his team have been working on
Charting the Land of Flowers for nearly three years,
enlisting the help of dozens of researchers,
scholars, conservators, designers and other
experts. Produced in-house, the show will debut
at the History Center and will be on exhibit for
five months. (Cont. on page 6)

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Charting the Land of Flowers
For the past two years, and to coincide with the quincentenary commemoration of Ponce de Leon’s arrival in
Florida, TBHC staff members have
worked diligently to create one of the
finest exhibitions of historic and contemporary Florida maps ever assembled –
Charting the Land of Flowers: 500 Years of
Florida Maps.
When our guests tour the History
Center’s newest exhibition, I am confident
they will like what they see. They will
enjoy viewing maps that are, in some
cases, hundreds of years old. They will marvel at the cartographers’ skills
in creating accurate maps with (by comparison to today’s resources) the
simplest of tools. They will be intrigued by the stories associated with these
pieces. And they will be engaged by the artistry of maps.
As many of our members and supporters know, the Center’s founding
board chairman, Tom Touchton, is an avid collector of Florida maps and
has spent years researching and studying maps and map-related ephemera.
Tom’s collection and his vast knowledge provided a wonderful starting point
from which to build the exhibit. Scholarship is one of the Center’s core
values. In order to ensure the information we present in the exhibition and
accompanying catalog is complete and accurate, we built a team of
advisors – scholars, collectors and curators from some of the top map
libraries in the nation – to assist us. This team worked closely with TBHC’s
Saunders Foundation Curator of History, Rodney Kite-Powell in
researching and identifying additional materials for inclusion in the show,
and writing copy for the catalog and the exhibition. We are extremely
grateful for the many contributions made by these individuals and their
good work is reflected in the quality of the show.
Organizing an exhibition of this size and quality can be an expensive
undertaking. From conservation and digitization of various maps, to
framing and printing of the exhibition catalog and labels, the costs build up
quickly. We were fortunate to have the support of several corporations and
individuals who generously provided the funding to cover these costs. Our
presenting sponsors are listed on page 6 of this publication.
Programs are at the heart of the Center. While our curatorial team was
working on the exhibition and catalog, our education staff was creating a
variety of children’s and adult education programs to complement the show.
It is an impressive line-up and I hope you will consider attending one or
several of these terrific programs.
This exhibition has truly been an “all hands on deck” effort. TBHC’s
facility staff built walls, repainted the gallery and worked with technical
experts to ensure proper temperature and humidity levels are in place. Our
marketing department has been raising awareness of the show both locally
and nationally. Our accounting department has tracked the generous gifts
from our supporters and provided reports of our expenditures. The
museum store team has worked hard to find unique map related
merchandise. And Tom Touchton has spent many hours researching and
writing. We’re proud of the result and we hope you like it too.

A special visit
Benita Navarro shows some her father’s cigar making tools and other
artifacts to History Center CEO C.J. Roberts and curator Rodney KitePowell.
Earlier this year, History Center President and CEO C. J. Roberts
received a hand-written letter from Mrs. Benita Navarro, an 89-yearold resident at John Knox Tampa Bay, a local retirement community.
Mrs. Navarro wrote to tell us about her father, who traveled from Cuba
to Key West to Tampa, where he worked in the thriving cigar industry
as a cigar maker and eventually married and raised a family. She also
mentioned that she had some of her father’s cigar-making tools and
other items, and that she hoped a friend would bring her for a visit to
the History Center.
Rare maps (cont. from page 1)
“When I read Mrs. Navarro’s letter, I wanted to make sure we found
a way for her to visit the Center. Our Cigar City exhibit celebrates and
tells the stories of her father’s legacy, which she so clearly treasures.”
said Roberts. History Center staff reached out to officials at John Knox to help
arrange a special tour and lunch for Mrs. Navarro. A few weeks later,
Mrs. Navarro and her husband, along with a group of 25 other John
Knox residents, visited the History Center for a special outing. They
were treated to a docent-led tour, followed by lunch at the Columbia
Cafe. Mrs. Navarro brought along her father’s cigar artifacts, including
two cigar chavetas (flat handle-less knives) and a chaveta cradle, and
generously donated them to the History Center after meeting C. J. and
the Center’s Curator of History, Rodney Kite-Powell. “We were thrilled that Mrs. Navarro donated these items to the
History Center and it was wonderful to hear her personal stories of
her father’s work.” said Kite-Powell. “Meeting Mrs. Navarro and seeing her passion for her own family’s
history and deep roots to the Tampa Bay community reminds us of
why it is so important that we preserve Tampa’s rich heritage and the
stories of the people, events and industries that shaped this very special
region. It was an honor to spend time with her and I hope she will return soon.” said Roberts.
Recently married, Mrs. Navarro said she enjoys life at John Knox
and has two daughters, five grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Asked what she likes to do for fun, Mrs. Navarro quickly
replied “cooking and dancing, but I have also recently taken up oil
painting, so I am spending a lot of time on that too!” Charting the Land of Flowers is supported by the Duckwall
Foundation, the Florida Humanities Council, the Kimmins
Foundation, the Mosaic Foundation, the Saunders Foundation, the
Tampa Bay Times, Tucker Hall and the University of South Florida.
SELECT MAPS FEATURED IN THE EXHIBITION:
• 1513 Tabula Terre Nove portrays the world as it was known at
the time of the Ponce de Leon’s Florida landing.
• 1786 Maritime Observations in a Letter by Benjamin Franklin includes
A Chart of the Gulf Stream.
• 1838 Earliest known map of Tampa.
This map, commissioned by the Dutch West India Company in 1630, is one of
more than 150 maps, charts, atlases and other artifacts in Charting the Land
of Flowers, opening Sept. 21.
Intricate and often vibrant – pink, red, and purple hues abound –
the maps in Charting the Land of Flowers are as much works of art as
they are historical documents. Together with atlases, city maps, nautical
charts, and satellite images, they chart 500 years of exploration,
settlement, and growth in The Land of Flowers.

Travel to Sicily
Featuring Agrigento, Tampa’s Sister City
May 4 - 12, 2014 • 9 Days
When Giovanni Cacciatore of Santo Stefano, Sicily,
arrived in Tampa’s Ybor
City in 1887 he found little
more than unpaved roads
and alligators. Within a few
short years, however, a
growing Italian community
would help transform Ybor
City into a bustling multiethnic immigrant neighborhood. Today, descendants
of Tampa’s Italian and
Sicilian immigrant families
have become an integral
part of Tampa’s multi-cultural identity.
In May 2014, you’re invited to discover Tampa’s
Sicilian roots with AAA and the Tampa Bay History Center. Join
Vince Pardo, Chairman of the Tampa-Agrigento Sister Cities Committee, and C.J. Roberts, the History Center President and CEO, as
they embark on a special tour through Agrigento and beyond.
Trip includes
• 8 nights in first/superior first class hotels in town centers
• Sightseeing, tours and excursions as per itinerary, led by qualified
English-speaking guide
• Transportation in luxury air-conditioned vehicles, including
qualified drivers
• Entrance fees for sightseeing as indicated
• Welcome dinner with wine in Palermo
• Farewell dinner with wine in Taormina; wine pairing lunch on day 3
Our tour of Sicily is the second international trip we’ve planned in
partnership with AAA. In May of 2012, the History Center, with special tour guide E.J. Salcines, led 30 guests on an exploration of northern Spain, visiting small towns and cities with cultural connections to
the Tampa Bay area. Our 2014 Sicilian adventure promises to be just
as special. For details about this one-of-a-kind opportunity, contact
your local AAA office.

NCNB Plaza Cornerstone
2013.032.016 | Courtesy of Sharman Hurd
By Jamie Lynn Riedy, Collections Department Volunteer
This limestone brick, engraved “NCNB Plaza,” was one of several such
stones placed along a wall on the corner of downtown Tampa’s Ashley
Drive and Kennedy Boulevard, denoting the venue for the regional
headquarters of the first out-of-state financial institution to acquire a Florida
bank. As originally conceived, NCNB Plaza
included a 33-story
cylindrical tower and
two 6-story cube
pavilions, as well as a
3.5 acre park. Architect Harry Wolf ’s
plans employed geometrical elements and mathematical ratios with the application of
Fibonacci’s numbers, a sequence of numbers in which each successive
number is the sum of the two preceding numbers, in the buildings’
design. Renowned landscape architect Dan Kiley, a National Medal of Arts
recipient, echoed facets of Wolf ’s design in an urban garden complete with
lush plants and water features. The synthesis of building and landscape
architecture were lauded in articles appearing in Civil Engineering and
Progressive Architecture magazines. Following its completion in 1988, the tower – now called Rivergate Tower,
but popularly referred to as the Beer Can Building – received numerous
awards for its architecture and interior design, including the 1989 Award
for Excellence in Architecture sponsored by the Florida Association of the
American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Eleventh Annual Interior
Awards for Best in Banks and Financial Office Design by Interiors
magazine.
Although the neglected park was dismantled in recent years, the building
continues to be celebrated for its unique contribution to local and state
architecture. In 2012, Rivergate Tower joined other Tampa landmark
buildings, including the Henry B. Plant Museum at the University of Tampa,
the Tampa Theatre, the Cuban Club in Ybor City, and the Tampa Museum
of Art on Florida’s AIA chapter “Florida Architecture 100 Years; 100
Places” list.
This stone was given to Ms. Sharman Hurd, in recognition for her role
in assisting with the interior design of the iconic downtown Tampa
building. As NCNB Liaison, Ms. Hurd worked with Associated Space
Design, Inc., to facilitate NCNB employee work flow and performance in
the unique round tower structure. Ms. Hurd also coordinated the relocation
of approximately 600 NCNB employees to the company’s new regional
headquarters, and was subsequently appointed NCNB’s Facility Manager.
