Unique places
Bischoffsheim
Bischoffsheim, a charming wine-growing village, used to
have two castles although today only a few ruins remain.
It boasts beautiful fountains, the oldest of which dates
back to 1550. The old half-timbered houses, impressive
carriage entrances and former seigniorial estates illustrate the village’s rich past. In the spring, the blossoming
orchards invite you to take a leisurely stroll. Bischenberg,
a hill overlooking Bischoffsheim, offers a lovely view of
the Plain of Alsace, and, in the distance, the Black Forest.
An old monastery, still used today, contains a chapel
featuring remarkable stain-glass windows.
Boersch
The Wine Route of Alsace will lead you to Boersch, a picturesque mediaeval town surrounded by sunny hillsides
and vineyards. Formerly fortified, Boersch was protected
by a wall dating back to the 14th century. Three towers
still stand, as witnesses to these fortifications. The best
way to discover the city is to visit the Renaissance Town
Hall and the Six-Bucket Well and, as you stroll down
the streets and alleys, take in the wine growers’ halftimbered houses and their numerous trade emblems.
Saint-Léonard is a former Benedictine convent that today
houses the famous Spindler marquetry workshops,
where Alsatian Art Nouveau emerged at the beginning of
the 20th century.

Klingenthal
257
Klingenthal
Klingenthal owes its name to the Royal Blade Manufactory which was opened there in 1730. Tilt forges, grinding
hulls, workshops and houses formed the factory village
along the Ehn River.
Grendelbruch
Located in the foothills of the Vosges, at the heart of
a vast forest, Grendelbruch is a peaceful mid-altitude
village. You can enjoy all the pleasures of a hike, whilst
making the most of numerous panoramic view points
over the Plain of Alsace. The massif du Hohbühl and its
high meadows are great places for flying kites and paragliding in summertime, and, in wintertime, for setting off
on cross country skiing expeditions.
Griesheim
Griesheim, a charming residential village, developed in
the valley of Rosenmeer, a wide vale carved out by the
stream, alongside which extends an arboretum, perfect
for strolls past different tree species from around the
world. Griesheim has always been a farming town and
is renowned for the quality of its asparagus and, for the
past few years, for its educational farm, “La Chèvrerie”.
You can visit the goat farm and taste different kinds of
cheese there.

Mollkirch
Mollkirch is a restful, revitalising sight to behold. As you
hike through the mountain, you will discover the ruins of
Guirbaden Castle, one of the largest in Alsace, built in the
11th century. You will be enchanted by the Celtic imaginings of the Demoiselles de Pierre Trail, with its forest
elves and fairies. Next, hunting horns, which echo across
mountains and valleys, will guide you to Laubenheim,
where you the Kloesterlé Chapel, dating back to the 12th
century, is waiting to be discovered.
Ottrott
Ottrott, a scenic little village nestling in a sea of green
and the village of Mont Sainte-Odile, will make you feel
welcome with its floral ambiance. Ottrott offers a wide
range of possibilities for enjoyment and discovery. While
taking a hike, you can discover the Pagan Wall, a 10.5 kmlong wall winding through the forest, the origins of which
remain unknown to this day. As for the wine growers,
they will impress you with the indisputable know-how
they put into making Rouge d’Ottrott, a Burgundy grape
variety that has been grown here since the 11th century.
Higher up, Mont Sainte-Odile is an centre of both tourism
and pilgrimage in Alsace. Magnificent panoramas will
allow you to admire the Plain of Alsace and the Vosges
Mountains.
Rosenwiller
A charming wine-growing village, Rosenwiller is located
in the hills above Rosheim, surrounded by hills rich
with especially diverse wildlife and plants. At the edge
of the woods, the Jewish Cemetery, one of the oldest
Jewish cemeteries in Alsace, contains over 6,000 tombs

featuring highly original sun patterns on the gravestones.
A stroll through the vineyards will give you the chance to
admire the panoramic views of the plain, before going to
taste the various grape types of Alsace wine, which have
been grown here since the 6th century.
Rosheim
Rosheim is a beautiful Alsatian town located on the Wine
Route and the Romanesque Road with an especially rich
history, to which its architectural heritage proudly bears
witness. The town is proud to possess one of the oldest
civilian buildings in Alsace, the Romanesque House, also
called the Pagan House (1154). St Pierre and St Paul
Church (12th century) is also one of the region’s jewels of
Romanesque architecture. The old doors, Six-Bucket Well
and Town Hall are other testaments to the town’s rich
past. To finish off your visit, you can enjoy the local delicacies and gastronomic specialities during the numerous
summer and winter events.
Saint-Nabor
Nestling at the base of Mont Sainte-Odile, Saint-Nabor is a small, peaceful village surrounded by forests
and vineyards. The village’s history and heritage are
intertwined with Niedermunster Monastery, an abbey
which is now in ruins but which had been converted into
a hospice by Saint Odile. The hospice’s purpose was to
take in ailing pilgrims who could not make it all the way
up to Mont Sainte-Odile. The little Saint Nicolas Chapel,
located downhill from the ruins, is a perfectly restored
monument of Romanesque architecture.

The legend of St. Odile
At the end of the 7th century,
Adalrich, a great Alsatian lord, was
desperately hoping for an heir. But
when his wife gave birth, it was to a
girl, and what’s more, she was blind.
Adalrich refused to accept this fate
and ordered that the infant be killed.
Protected by her mother, who hid
her, the child was saved. When she
was 12 years old, her sight miraculously returned when she was baptised. She was then renamed “Odile”,
meaning “child of light”. Soon after
her christening, Odile expressed
the desire to go back home. Her
brother Hugues responded quickly,
inviting her to his castle. Wild with
anger, the father killed his son. But
Adalrich was remorseful and called
his daughter back to him, provided
that she would agree to marry one
of the powerful men in the kingdom.
She refused. Then a second miracle
occurred in the forest. Fleeing from
her father, Odile struck a rock, which
opened up to protect her. Adalrich,
convinced of the miracle, had his
Hohenbourg castle converted into
a monastery, and this is how Odile
became the first abbess of Hohenbourg.
6
History
Around 680, Adalrich, Duke of
Alsace, had a convent built for his
daughter Odile in Hohenbourg. The
monastery thrived quickly, becoming
what it remains to this day: an
important place of worship in Alsace.
It is also a place of pilgrimage
dedicated to the patron saint of
Alsace, and since 1931, a constant
flow of worshippers have been
taking turns to fervently sustain a
constant prayer vigil, night and day.
What you can visit there
The Tomb Chapel, containing the
sarcophagus of St. Odile and 18th
century paintings recounting her
life and legend - the cloister with

History
St Pierre and St Paul Church is a
Romanesque building of utmost
importance in Alsace.
Built in the 12th century at the

compound of the town, the church
now looks as if it were set on a high
base, dominating the main street.
St Pierre and St Paul Church
embodies the artistic zenith reached
in the 12th century in Alsace.
Furthermore, it has a prominent
place in Romanesque sculpture,

At the heart of the village, the
church, dedicated to the Assumption

one in the canton with important
elements of Gothic architecture.
Inside the church, visitors will notice
the murals in particular, which were
characteristic of sacred art in the
Middle Ages. The high altar is one
of the church’s jewels. It is made
up of 4 elements from different
periods: an altar table circa 1220, a
tabernacle and a statue of the Virgin
with her Child from the 15th century,
and an altarpiece from the 17th
century. Furthermore, this building is
unique due to its wooden furnishings
from the 17th century, and in
particular the side altars dedicated
to St Sebastian and Saint Catherine.
The bell tower and Gothic choir are
classified as historical monuments.

On the Alsace Wine Route
Located on the Wine Route, Rosheim Canton combines beautiful landscapes with gastronomy. The Pays du Mont
Sainte-Odile offers, in addition to the 7 “traditional” grape varieties, two extra red wine varieties: Rouge d’Ottrott and
Rouge de St Léonard.
Presentation of the different wines
Local Specialities
Riesling: considered one of the best white wines: dry and
racy, with exquisite fruity notes.
Rouge d’Ottrott: this wine emerged in the 10th century
in Alsace. It is distinguished by its harmonious body.
Gewurztraminer: renowned for its aromas, this is a fullbodied white wine with a real elegance. It can be served
as an aperitif, with foie gras and with dessert.
Bouquet de Senteurs: A blend of fine grape varieties
developed by the wine growers of Rosheim Canton,
each vintage bears the signature of the wine grower
who made it, like a symphony of the best wines in
their cellars. A harmony of floral notes reflecting the
richness of the soil in this part of the Vosges Foothills,
the Bouquet de Senteurs is a dry and fruity wine that
will go perfectly with starters and seafood. As an aperitif,
serve it chilled on a summer terrace to fully enjoy all its
aromas.
Sylvaner: a light, dry white wine that goes well with cold
cuts, white meats and salads.
Pinot Blanc: a dry, supple and lively white wine that suits
all sorts of dishes perfectly.
Pinot Gris: a powerful, round wine, it can often suitably
take the place of a red wine with white meat and game.
Muscat d’Alsace: ideal as an aperitif, this white wine will
win you over with its characteristic bouquet and fruity
taste.
Pinot Noir: the only red or rosé wine of Alsace, with a
deliciously fruity taste..
