There’s an old saying: “an ounce of prevention is worth
a pound of cure”. It’s true! The flu is a dangerous enemy, but we can fight it! The CDC (Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention) confirms that vaccination is the
best way to prevent the spread of the flu virus. The
CDC also recommends:
• Avoid close contact with sick people.
• Persons with flu symptoms or illness should limit
contact with others as much as possible, and stay home
for at least 24 hours after fever is gone without the use
of fever-reducing medicine (Everyone should wash
hands often with soap and water when available, and/
or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. This is important before and after meals and toileting; after use of
tissues; after physical contact with others who are ill,
and after being in public.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you
cough or sneeze, to block the spread of germs; then
discard your tissue! If you don’t have a tissue, use your
upper arm to block your cough or sneeze- never your
hands! This will help you to prevent spreading germs
when you touch objects or other people.
Please report illness/hospitalization to the ADC! Also,
please reinforce flu prevention efforts with your family
and with others in the community. Lets work together
to promote the health and safety of ADC clients and
their families. There’s another wise saying: “the best
defense is a good offense!”
For more information about the flu virus, prevention,
and treatment, visit the CDC website at
http://www.cdc.gov/features/fluactivity/.

Embassy Club News: From celebrations of Kwanza to Tu Bi’Shvat, to MLK talks & remembrances this club has been on the move. They enjoyed their Olympic Event with the University School 3rd graders for an afternoon of non-stop action and high energy fun as
they work as partners with their pen-pal buddies in relay races and games.
A group was able to get in an exhilarating trip to China Town for a taste of fresh egg rolls
and candy. They always enjoy the visit from the Master Gardeners who this month had
them paint flower pots and propagate flowers to sell at the Carte-Nedley FUNdraiser.
Club Belair News: This club took advantage of the New Year Sales with a trip to
Malley’s Chocolate Factory where they were able to get twice the treats! They
continue to relax, bend, stretch, smile and laugh during the bi-monthly sessions
with Dance & Music Therapist, Miriam. These sessions bring out the best in
every member of Club Belair and made it easy for them to be the first on the
dance floor at the smooth sounds of Fred Sevillo.
Club Mandel News: In honor of National Eye Care month, Club Mandel looked into all aspects of eyes - from famous eyes to Eye-Q. They had their second visit from the University
School 3rd graders when they came to participate in our Olympic Event. The pen-pal partners participated in washers, corn-hole, cup stacking and cup passing before sharing a snack
and lively discussions. This afternoon is filled with laughter and exercise and is the highlight
of the year for at least one of the University School teachers! The club was treated to a presentation from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, complete with pelts, antlers and nature ‘tails’.
Looking aHead News The Looking aHead trainees are now preparing for our annual Fresh
Flower Sale, to take place here at Menorah Park on February 14th. This sale has become a
valued service to Menorah Park staff, as it permits staff the opportunity to purchase fresh
cut carnations on site for a friend or loved one. Our customers are able to customize their
“cash and carry” orders, by selecting the colors of their carnations, colorful wrap and ribbon.
We will be accepting advance orders for larger flower amounts or multiple single flowers.
Our goal is to make the process as easy and efficient as possible for the hard-working employees of Menorah Park! The opportunity to provide this customer service allows the trainees to work on their active listening, attention to detail and interpersonal communication
skills – all of which are executive level cognitive skills.
Club Fusion News:
Club Fusion has been staying warm and dry indoors this past month. They are well aware of
how ‘cabin fever’ can negatively affect a person’s mood and health and are working on
ways to manage them during this bitter, winter weather. Under the direction of Andrea
Coleman, they have continued to do so in a variety of ways including different types of exercise, dance, art/craft projects and games. Amidst all of this, is the continuous presence of
hearty laughter – which we all agree is the BEST medicine!
Club Delight News: Between all of their own brain stimulating games, swimming and
exercises, and making wooden trinket boxes for the fundraiser, Club Delight went to Cleveland art Museum for an exhibit of worldwide ancient treasures. They were most impressed with the Incan pottery that has beautifully survived the centuries.
Making it fun!
We have planned a FUN February 4-8 for the Carter Nedley Week by joining forces with FUNdamentals
(Menorah Park’s childcare program) to sponsor a week of philanthropic FUNdraising. The Carter Nedley
foundation began in 2010 by the Nedley family, whose son Carter lost his life to myelogenous leukemia.
His family set-up this foundation to serve children battling cancer and to support the infant programs here
at Menorah Park where he had been attending day care.
Since October, we have enjoyed preparing many craft items that will be for sale on Tuesday, February 5 at
the FUNdraiser. We made sun-catchers, bookmarks, trinket boxes, beaded jewelry, seasonal stationary and
greeting cards. Club Members have appreciated being able to help support this huge event and have been
very proud of their masterpieces. The final event will be on Friday morning when we have a one hour
Dance-a-thon in the Menorah Park auditorium. We encourage you to help us by filling up and returning
the enclosed sponsor sheet. We invite you to stop by Menorah Park any morning the week of February 2-8
to join in the fun and to support this very special Foundation.
• Monday, Feb 4th Kick-off with Gift Basket Raffles & 50/50 Raffle sales
• Tuesday, Feb 5 Craft Sale
• Wednesday, Feb 6—Balloon Grams (for $1.00 you can send in a note & we’ll deliver a balloon-gram to
your loved one)
• Thursday, Feb 7—Bake Sale— all items will be kosher
• Friday, February 8, 10:30—Dance-a-thon and drawing of Raffle winners.
I hope you hear about how much FUN we have – we strive to make it meaningful, too. If you have questions, or ideas to share, please contact Shawn Biese, 216-896-1107 or [email protected].
