VenturingFest 2016 The first national gathering of Venturers at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, is set for July 31 to August 5, 2016. The Summit is a great place to have fun and an exciting time with other Venturers from across the country. VenturingFest 2016 is open to registered Venturers, Scouts (14+) and adult leaders. This six-day High-Adventure excursion invites participants to explore the best the Summit has to offer. We’re talking rock climbing, skateboarding, BMX biking, water sports, shooting sports, zip lines, challenge courses, and so much more. Cost: $400 Youth, $300 Adults More Cub Scout Advancement News Reporting Please make sure that all Webelos and Arrow of Light ranks are entered in the BSA system before your Scout crosses over and registered in a Boy Scout unit. Once a boy is registered in a troop, any Cub Scout ranks that were earned including Arrow of Light will not be able to be entered in the youth’s scouting history. This is why prompt recording of advancements is important. All ranks should count for the Scout and be on their permanent Scouting record. Cub Scouts Shooting Sports Awards – Take Aim at New Fun! Cub Scout Shooting Sports Awards are here! To discover the new opportunities, visit the Program Updates web page (scouting.org/programupdates), and see the details for the inclusion of BB guns, archery, and slingshots in Cub Scout programs. These programs may only be conducted at a district or council level and by qualified range masters and supervisors. Boys will earn the shooting sports awards in a particular order: Rank-level patch. Choose a discipline: BB gun, archery, or slingshot. Complete the Level 1 requirements for that discipline. Discipline device (pin). Complete the Level 2 requirements for the same discipline in which the patch was earned. Additional discipline devices. Earn pins for the remaining disciplines by completing the Level 1 and Level 2 requirements in those disciplines. (Note: Both Level 1 and Level 2 requirements must be completed for each successive discipline.) More Boy Scout Merit Badge Changes Changes were recently announced for some very popular merit badges as a direct result of feedback from leaders across the country. Cooking For years, Scout leaders reported that there was not enough “cooking” in the Cooking merit badge, and it did not adequately represent all types of cooking. In 2014, the badge became an Eagle Scout-required badge once again, and these concerns were addressed. Almost immediately, feedback began to come in from leaders saying that although the new requirements were a great improvement, perhaps they went overboard. The badge had become more technical and science-oriented and the requirements could be better organized. In a very unusual move, an update was released this year to help our Scouts earn the badge without losing the original intent of the improvements. REMEMBER… A Scout can continue to use the older requirements should he choose to, or he can switch to the new. The choice is his. More Lifesaving Several requirements were rewritten to reinforce safety and to clarify for Scouts and counselors what is expected. The pamphlet has greatly been improved with new text and photos. Snow Sports Scouts have previously been able to earn this badge by demonstrating their skills in skiing or snowboarding. Now, they will also be able to do so with a third option--snowshoeing. Many Scouts participate in snowshoeing at camp, and now they can earn Snow Sports merit badge by doing so. Welding Merit Badge Workshop Session 1 June 11, 2016 Session 2 June 18, 2016 Both Sessions are 9am-noon at Harper College (1200 W Algonquin Road, Palatine, Ill) Registration is $15 Online Registration for June workshop is open to June 7 Currently there is a wait list so check in to see if there is an opening Participants MUST be 14 years old to attend. Scouts must attend both sessions in their entirety to qualify for the welding merit badge. Workshop supported by Harper College and Chicago Blowers Corporation. More Someone You Should Know Sue Simmons Council Commissioner Sue became Pathway to Adventure Council Commissioner in April after being a 16-year veteran volunteer of the Boy Scouts of America. Her lifelong love for outdoor adventure was sparked at 17 years old when she embarked on a 14-day camping trip in Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. This was her first of many camping experiences. Since 2010, Sue has served the BSA through a myriad of volunteer positions at all levels and in numerous programs. She has volunteered as a den leader, assistant Scoutmaster, committee chair, Jamboree 2010 assistant Scoutmaster, district committee chair, council executive board member, group vice president of district operations and council commissioner for Northwest Suburban Council. Sue is a staunch advocate of training and practices what she preaches. She served on the training staff for Baloo, OWL, IOSL, OKPIC, Wood Badge, District Committee Workshop and Unit Commission Basics and Tools. Sue is a Vigil Honor member of the OA, a Silver Beaver recipient, and a Fox to those who know her through Wood Badge. As Council Commissioner, Sue provides direction and support for the Unit and District Commissioners and their service to units. One of the services is helping adult leaders use the Journey to Excellence to achieve excellence in youth development. Outside of Scouting, Sue is the director of quality improvement for Help At Home, LLC. Sue and her husband, Jim, live in the Pathfinder District of PTAC’s Northwest Suburban Community. Sue and Jim have three adult children: a daughter and two sons. In her free time (we don’t know where she finds it) Sue enjoys gardening and bird watching. Honor Flight Chicago will be flying WWII and Korean War veterans this year to Washington D.C for special recognition of their service to our country. Scout groups are asked to come to Midway to welcome them home from their day of Honor. We hope you can join as part of the honor guard this year. Flight dates are June 8, July 13, August 10, September 7, and October 5.
