t is time for Men’s Day 2013! This year our theme is: “Grateful for
Happiness: Through Perseverance, Participation & Prayer!” which is
inspired by Pastor Jackson’s “Happy A nyhow” sermon series. Dr. Sam
Davis of Beulah Grove Baptist Church, Augusta, GA will be our Men’s Day
Worship Service speaker. Motivational speaker, Mr. Brandan Davis will share
an inspirational message during the Men’s Day Breakfast.
Dr. Sam Davis - Reverend Davis is a native of Barnwell, South Carolina and

Financial Empowerment Sunday - June 16th
On the third Sunday in June, our featured Financial Empowerment Sunday (FES) business will be The
Community Farmers Market. This business is sponsor ed by The Cor por ation for Economic
Opportunity (CEO). CEO is a non-profit corporation, founded by Brookland Member, Joe James, in
2004. CEO’s mission is to improve the economic status of disadvantaged individuals and communities, while
improving their quality of life. The Community Farmers Market at Brookland was started four years ago by
CEO, linking rural and urban African-Americans, while improving diets in our community and increasing
revenues for Black farmers.
Since its founding in 2004, CEO has:
Brought a fruit orchard to a deserving Columbia neighborhood in 2012
Begun working with a group of women quilters, from Monrovia, Liberia, by helping them sell their
wonderful, hand stitched quilts, here in the US.
Plans to help the youngsters at Brookland Academy plant their own vegetable garden. Hopefully, in
addition to eating all they can, some of their produce may be featured at the Community Farmers Market.
The Community Farmers Market’s display on Sunday, June 16th will serve as their official kickoff of its fifth
season. However, its regular hours thereafter will be on Friday afternoons, from 1-7 PM, on the church’s
gravel parking lot starting on Friday, June 21st.
Financial Empowerment Sunday (FES) is a monthly event that will feature businesses owned by members of
Brookland Baptist. FES is part of an ongoing effort to promote African-American economic
empowerment and all Brookland worship service attendees are strongly encouraged to financially support these
featured businesses.
Please stop by the Community Farmers Market tables in the gravel parking
across Sunset Boulevard after worship service on June 16th.

Brookland’s Students - Where Are They Now?
As part of Brookland Baptist’s ongoing commitment to education (one of the three “E’s in our mission statement),
Brookland offers financial scholarships to help deserving students pay for college. Have you ever wondered where
these students ended up or pondered how they were doing? To help you keep up with many of our children in
their post collegiate years, we are introducing this new feature of the Brookland Star newsletter.
If you are a past recipient of a Brookland college scholarship or a parent of one, please contact us at
[email protected]. This is your opportunity to share with us how you or your college graduate child is
doing.
This month’s featured “W here A re They Now” profile is of Mr. Aston Motes, the son of Henry and Patricia Motes.
Aston Motes
Aston attended and graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
with a BS in Computer Science. At MIT, he participated in the Black Students
Union and was a percussionist in the MIT Wind Ensemble and the Festival Jazz
Ensemble. He also helped to found Pulse, the annual Black cultural show whose
purpose is to display all cultures and traditions of the African Diaspora in order to
help our community appreciate how all of these cultures are intertwined. Also at
MIT, Aston was inducted into Eta Kappa Nu, an honor society for electrical and
computer engineering.
After MIT, Mr. Motes was the first hire at the increasingly popular online storage company, Dropbox. At the time
of his hiring, Dropbox was just a startup firm. He spent four years there as a Computer Engineer and partly
because of his expertise, this company experienced tremendous growth in the number of its employees and
customers to become the well recognized technology firm it is today. Currently, Aston is working on his own
venture.
Before his college years, Aston’s main activity at Brookland Baptist was with the Teens in Praise. During his
years at Irmo High School, he was a percussionist in the Marching Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and the
Percussion Ensemble. After graduating from MIT, Aston spoke at Brookland during the 2008 Annual Education
Day Observance. His general theme for his speech was “Growing Up and Making Decisions in Times of
Uncertainty” .

The CBJS will celebrate 35 years of music ministry, July 12-14, 2013. The anniversary Theme: “Through the
Years: Trials, Testimonies & Triumph!” portraits the sincere F amily and fellowship that has kept this ministry
together for over 3 decades.
The Reunion Anniversary Week-end will kick off with a Reception on Friday, July 12th followed by a Saturday
Choir Rehearsal and Banquet. The Reunion Choir will provide musical selections at the Sunday, July 14th 11:00

Three things to Expect When Facing Life’s Challenges
The enemy will try to put fear in you
When you make a decision to face something, one of the tactics of the devil is to embed fear in you. Convincing you to
believe you can’t do it and to think of all the things that will happen as a result of you confronting what needs to be
faced.
Don’t give into the schemes of the devil. We know that he comes to kill, steal and destroy and that God has NOT given
you the spirit of fear, but power, love and a sound mind. Overcome the spirit of fear with faith.
Expect people to change on you
When Jesus was here on earth, the same people who smiled in His face were the same people who turned on Him and
yelled for him to be crucified. Truth be told, when you are facing whatever it is you need to face, not every person will
understand. They may smile, talk behind your back and even reject you as they did with Jesus.
Although Jesus knew this to be so, He didn’t let facing rejection, mockery, suffering and rejection stop Him from going
to the cross. As the time became closer for Jesus to be crucified, He said to his disciples, “The Son of Man must suffer
many terrible things,” he said. “He will be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law.
He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead” (Luke 9:21)
As the time of crucifixion got even closer Jesus said, “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away
from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine” (Luke 22:42). As you see, Jesus didn’t want to face being
crucified, but He did for you and I. But while doing so, He had people, such as Judas, change and turn on him.
When you make a decision to face life’s challenges and confront the things you know needs to be faced, don’t be
surprised when people begin changing on you as they did with Jesus.
“But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats” (1
Peter 3:14).
Expect God to work through you
The Bible never says that everything we face and go through will be good; however it does say that ALL things work
out for our good. When you confront the thing God has pricked in your heart to face, expect God to work through you;
revealing His glory through you to others around you.
You may not see it right now, but once you confront this thing, at the end of it all you will realize that it was for your
good that you needed to confront and face it.
