D’Addario Chromes flat wound electric guitar
strings are famous for the smooth feel of their
flat ribbon windings and their great tone. Each
Chromes string is wound and polished on the
same machine, with string tension remaining
constant between processes. Nickelplated
steel underwindings on hex cores, polished
smooth, make Chromes the choice of jazz
and fusion players.

Half Round guitar strings are round wound with 430 stainless steel, as used in our
XLS strings. The strings are then precision ground, leaving the outer surface smooth
and ”semi-flat.” The result is a string that maintains the flexibility and most of the tonal
characteristics of round wound strings, with the smooth feel of flat wound strings.

Flat Tops: D’Addario’s Phosphor Bronze strings in a
semi-flat form. Flat Tops are polished smooth, with
D’Addario’s three-step polishing process. This produces
a smooth, flattened playing surface, but does not
sacrifice the warm tone and sustain associated with
phosphor bronze strings. Flat Tops are excellent for
recording and greatly reduce finger noise.

D’Addario Gypsy Jazz strings are
specially designed for the “Django”
style. Silverplated copper is wound
on a high carbon steel core, delivering a warm,
projecting tone optimal for any Gypsy Jazz
style guitar.
item #
Silk & Steel strings provide a mellow tone
preferred by many folk players. Excellent for
smaller-body acoustic guitars, silk and steel
strings make for easier fingering and allow
for reduced string noise.

EXP Coated™ 80/20 Bronze Round Wound
EXP Coated™ Phosphor Bronze Round Wound
EXP Coated Acoustic Guitar strings look like traditional strings, feel like traditional strings,
and sound like traditional strings. The difference is that the EXP Coating provides a barrier
against the corrosion and wear that can quickly sap the life out of your strings. EXP
Coated strings retain their "new string tone," lasting 3-4 times longer than traditional strings.
An ultra-fine layer of EXP Coating is bonded to the wrap wire, which is then wound onto the highcarbon steel, hex-shaped core wire. This gives you a feel you're comfortable with, coupled
with longer life, increased durability, and corrosion resistance, along with the great tone associated
with D'Addario strings.

“You’re not just playing
the guitar, you’re
playing the strings as
well. D’Addario strings
give me everything I
want from a string;
clear, balanced sound,
luscious tone and feel
that I’ve never found
in any other strings.
They are the highest
quality and most
consistent strings
I’ve ever used.”
Ed
Gerhard
“I am delighted with
D’Addario EXPs.
Here is a string with
no loss of response
and no change in feel.
EXPs start out
sounding great and
stay that way longer.”

ProSteels are D’Addario’s brightest and most magnetic bass strings. A specialized alloy
delivers harmonically rich, brilliant high-end coupled with deep, tight lows that work in tandem
to create the “piano tone” steel players crave. ProSteels are the new sound of steel!

Heavy/Long Scale
The Donnas
20
Here’s how it works: An ultra-fine layer of EXP Coating is bonded to the outermost nickel plated
steel wrap wire, which is then wound onto the high-carbon steel hex-shaped core wire.
The result is a barrier against the corrosion and wear that can quickly sap the life out of your
strings and your sound. And, since the EXP coating is cross-linked to the wrap wire prior to
winding, EXP strings have a normal round wound feel and keep their “new string tone” 3-4
times longer than traditional bass strings.

Chromes™
Stainless Steel
Flat Wound
D’Addario Chromes Flatwound bass strings are famed for their smooth feel and great tone.
Complex combinations of interlocking under-windings on a hex core build a foundation for
the delicate outer ribbon winding. The strings are wound and then polished to produce an
incredibly smooth surface.
Half Round bass strings are round wound with pure nickel, then precision ground, leaving
the outer surface smooth and ”semi-flat.” They retain the flexibility and many of the tonal
characteristics of round wound strings. Our Half Round heat-treating process increases the
brightness of the strings.

“For long life, great
tone, and superior
quality, use D’Addario
strings.”
Chris
Chaney
“I’ve been using
D’Addario strings on
all my basses for the
last fifteen years.
Their clarity and
harmonic balance
have always given me
the sounds I’ve been
looking for, from
mellow fretless to
raging thrash and
everything in
between.”

“I have used D’Addario guitar strings for many years now.
They are on all of my recordings and are played at all of my
concerts. They give my guitar a beautiful, full, warm tone
and they are always reliable and in tune. Everything I want
from a guitar string. D’Addario classical guitar strings
are the best on the market.”
David Russell
“It’s true that I only use D’Addario strings.
I demand the best!”
Xuefei Yang
“There wouldn’t be a good sound without them!
The strings we use are the essence of our sound,
the quality of it. I prefer to surround my guitar
world with D’Addario strings.”

Folk/Classical Guitar Ball End
D’Addario Classics
D’Addario Classics use rectified nylon trebles.
Each treble string is ground using proprietary
centerless grinding techniques. Roundness and
dimension control are unsurpassed, ensuring
absolutely perfect intonation. Rectified nylon
strings are known for their ”warmer” tone.
Folk Nylon strings are high-quality nylon guitar
strings with ball ends on each string to facilitate
easy installation on classical guitars, as well as
steel string acoustic guitars if desired.

“Since 1976 all of my recordings have
featured D’Addario strings. Tone has
always been important to me and I like
their tone. And they’re very consistent.
I don’t know how you all do it,
I just like ’em.”
David Grisman
“D’Addario strings withstand all the punishment
we can dish out and still retain that great tone and
feel we look for on a daily basis. Quite simply,
they’re the best strings we’ve ever used.”
Mountain Heart
Del McCoury
“I’ve been using EXPs and they’re great. They stay alive
longer and have a great sound. I wouldn’t use anything else.”
Ronnie McCoury
“I really like the longevity of EXP75s. I tend to sweat
a lot and I can’t believe how long they stay lively.”

“I’ve been playing
D’Addario strings for
over a decade and I am
really impressed with
the craftsmanship and
consistency, to say
nothing of how long
they last. Whether
I’m using the acoustic
banjo strings or a
custom classical set
for my electric nylon
string banjo, when
I’m playing D’Addario
I know my strings
won’t let me down.”

3 – Even acoustic guitar saddles can be worn out, causing
strings to abrade at rough
spots.
5 – Check break angle.
Good break angle
ensures a firm string to
saddle contact.
6 – Break angle is determined by tailpiece height
on instruments with Tuneo-matic style bridges.

why strings
break
If you keep breaking one string, inspect all points of string contact. If they are smooth, suspect
that your playing style is aggressive enough to warrant an increase in the gauge of the string.
Browse through the listings of the many standard set configurations we offer; special sets like
EJ26, EJ19, or EXL140 and EXL125 enable you to increase the gauge of only half of the set.
Remember, you can always make up your own custom set by purchasing single strings. Your
favorite dealer can custom order any string gauges they may not keep in inventory.

(action) at the 12th fret.
Suggested “low” action measurements:
Steel string guitars – 6/64" at the
bass E and 4/64" at the treble E.
Classical guitars – 8/64" at the
bass E and 7/64" at the treble E.

About String Tensions and Gauges
D’Addario string sets are gauged so that when they are at concert
pitch, the individual strings feel near equal in tension. String tension
is determined by vibrating length, mass, and pitch. Diameter alone
does not determine a string’s tension. By using different raw materials
or by varying the ratio between the core and the wrap wire during
the winding process, two strings with the same diameter, tuned to
the same pitch, could have different string tensions. Comparing a
D’Addario .032 string to a competitor’s .032 string may not yield the
same playing tension. For the most part, all plain strings are made
of high- carbon steel; thus any brand of plain steel string with the
same diameter will have a comparable tension. That’s not to say
that the quality of the wire used to make that plain steel string will be
the same. At D’Addario, we have stringent quality-control measures
for all plain steel and wrap wires to ensure unsurpassed quality and
consistency. You should experiment with different string sets to
determine what sounds, feels, and plays best for you.
There are many factors other than string gauge that determine actual
and perceived string tension on your instrument:
• Scale length, or the distance from the nut to the saddle. (The
longer the scale, the higher the tension for the same string).
• The flexibility of the instrument top and neck.
• The string break-angle at the nut and saddle/bridge.
• String height or “action” as adjusted at the saddle.
• Truss rod adjustment (neck relief).
String tension is measured in pounds of pull per string. In this catalog,
string tensions are listed with each set.
Before deciding on a string gauge, be sure that your instrument is
“set up” properly. High string action not only affects how tense the
strings feel, but can also cause poor intonation.
Which String Set is for Me?
Glossary of String Terms
String tensions were measured at
the scale lengths listed below:
Ballend - Refers to the brass ferrule affixed
to the end of a musical string.
Instrument
Ballend Nylon - Sometimes referred to as
“Folk Nylon,” these are standard nylon guitar
strings that have a ballend affixed to one end.
This enables quicker and easier installation
on a nylon classical guitar or facilitates the
use of nylon strings on a steel string guitar.

Whether choosing an electric or acoustic string, the right string tension
for your style is a matter of trial and error and is of utmost importance.
Experimenting with different tensions can bring out a completely
different character in the sound of your instrument and in the style of
your play. Players are often astounded to find that a lighter tension
set can actually sound better on their guitar. You should not assume
that the string tension the guitar manufacturer selected at the factory
is the right tension for you.
Bronze, Phosphor - Introduced to string making
by D’Addario, phosphor bronze strings last
longer than conventional bronze alloy strings.
The small percentage of phosphorous in the
alloy helps them to retain their sound longer.
Composite classical guitar strings - in this
catalog, the term Composite refers to a new
fourth-generation polymer that is used as a
multifilament core for the wound strings and
as a monofilament for the third string in our
Pro•Arté Composite series sets. This new
polymer is the closest man-made equivalent
to natural gut.
Half Round™ - Introduced by D’Addario in the
early ‘70s, Half Round® strings start out as
traditional round wound strings that are then
precision ground, leaving the outer surface
of the string smooth and flat wound in
appearance, while retaining the flexibility and
most of the tonal characteristics of a round
wound string.
Light gauge strings are the most popular and are recommended by
most makers of acoustic steel string guitars. Lighter overall string
tension ensures longer soundboard and neck life. Heavier tensions
are not recommended for guitars built with fragile tops. Medium
gauge strings offer more projection on heavier built instruments.
For those players who prefer to use heavy strings, heavy gauges are
available.
34
Bronze, 85/15 - An alloy of 85% copper and
15% zinc, 85/15 bronze combines the brilliant
sound characteristics of 80/20 bronze with
the greater sustain usually found in phosphor
bronze strings.
Flat Wound - Refers to winding a flat or
ribbon-like wire onto the core of a musical
string. All D’Addario flat wound strings are
digitally wound for precise wire spacing and
then polished in three different steps to create
an incredibly smooth, accurate string.
Custom blending of light and medium sets or extra light and light sets
is also an option. For example, EXL140 combines the trebles of a
regular light electric set with the basses of a jazz EJ21 set. This allows
easy bending of treble strings with the heftier bass response of the
heavier EJ21 strings.
Classical sets are gauged in light, normal, hard, and extra hard tensions.
Although the total pounds of pull of classical string sets are much
lower than their steel string counterparts, the string height, as measured
from the fretboard, is set higher on classical guitars. This fact makes
the tension difference critical.
Bronze, 80/20 - An alloy of 80% copper and
20% zinc, sometimes referred to as brass.
Delivers a strong, deep bass response with
extremely bright and crisp overtones when
used as wrap wire for acoustic guitar strings.
Extremely brilliant sounding when new, they
begin to lose some of their “new” sound
after only a few hours of use. Preferred by
many stage and studio performers.
Hex Core Wire - A high carbon steel alloy
that is six sided in cross section. When used
as the core or “center” of a musical string,
the 6 edge points firmly grip every turn of the
wrap wire, ensuring a tight wrap and longerlasting string. Used exclusively on all
D’Addario steel core strings.
Quality control inspections include testing incoming
wire shipments for tensile strength and elongation.
Laser-selected Pro•Arté™ Nylon - The
monofilament nylon used for all D’Addario
Pro•Arté treble strings is an exclusive, slowextruded nylon that has harder and denser
properties than conventional nylons. Each
string is passed through laser inspection
where approximately 200 measurements are
taken along the length of the string. The data
is compared and averaged by an exclusive
high-speed computer process and the string
is sorted into the various tensions listed in this
catalog. Strings that do not meet tolerance
specifications in any one of their measurements
are rejected in this process. This ensures
consistent string tensions and virtually perfect
intonation from every Pro•Arté string purchased.
Lock Twist - The ballends on all D’Addario
strings are fastened with a standard twist
and a series of tightly wound lock twists.
Used exclusively on all D’Addario plain steel
strings, it ensures that the twisted area will
not unwind when under tension.
Monofilament Nylon - Single strand extruded
nylon commonly used for the treble strings
on a classical guitar.
Multifilament Nylon - Refers to the floss-like
material used as the core of wire-wound strings
for use on classical guitar, oud, lute etc.
Nickelplated Steel - A steel alloy that has an
electroplating of 8% pure nickel. This is the
formula used in the world-famous D’Addario
XL string line. The steel alloy is ideally suited
for magnetic pickups and the nickel plating
provides a cosmetic finish, oxidation resistance,
and surface softness. It is bright sounding
and long lasting without promoting premature
fret wear.
Polished - A unique process of sanding or
polishing a round wound string into a semiflattened surface. We utilize three grits of
sandpaper to produce the sheen you see in
our Flat Tops line. At D’Addario, we wind,
wrap, sand, and polish the strings on the
same machine.
Rectified Nylon Trebles - Beginning with oversized standard nylon, each string is centerless
ground to precise tolerances (+/- .0002")
ensuring perfect intonation. Used in all
D’Addario “Classic” series sets, rectified nylon
strings have a more mellow sound and are
preferred by many professionals for recording
work and for use on Renaissance instruments.
Round Core Wire - A high-carbon steel alloy
wire that is round in cross section. Used for
plain steel strings and by some music string
manufacturers in place of more costly hex
core wire. Unless treated properly, it can
yield loose or prematurely dead strings.
See “Hex Core Wire” for further explanation.
Round Wound - Refers to the winding of round
wrap wire onto the core of a musical string.
Silverplated Copper - Bare round copper wire
is electroplated with pure sterling silver. This
wire is ideally suited for classical guitar strings.
Stainless Steel - The stainless steel used by
D’Addario is a 430 series highly magnetic
alloy. 430 stainless steel strings are excellent
for magnetic pickup amplification and are
noted for their exceptional brightness,
anti-tarnishing characteristics, and extreme
durability. Also a preferred choice on
acoustic/electric instruments.
Standard Nylon - This refers to commercially
extruded material used by most other string
manufacturers for classical guitar treble strings.
Not recommended for the serious musician
since control of diameter and density is usually
unacceptable. Standard nylon is usually
found in such products as hair brushes or
fishing line.
Wrap Wire - Refers to any wire that is used
to wrap or wind on top of a core to produce
a musical string.
Nylon Strings - A term that usually refers to
the complete complement of 6 strings used on
a classical guitar. Usually the first three (treble
strings) are monofilament nylon and the last
three are wire wound on multifilament nylon.
Nylon Trebles - Refers to monofilament nylon
commonly used for the first three strings on
a classical guitar. D’Addario uses 3 types of
nylon treble material; Laser-selected Pro•Arté
nylon, rectified nylon, and standard nylon.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Restringing Your Guitar
1 – To ensure solid, non-slip tuning, make sure strings
are properly secured at both ends.
When to change strings:
Most players change strings when they lose their brilliance, sound too
mellow, when intonation falters, or when their instrument is difficult to keep
in tune. Changing one string after it breaks is not recommended, as the
newer string will definitely be brighter sounding than the rest of the set.

1 - mark the lowest pitch string at
the nut with a marker (figure a).
The locking hold - The most secure method of wrapping around the
tuning peg is to bring the extra string back around and under the
string as it winds around the peg. This is especially critical on strings
that have no windings (plain steel or classical nylon treble strings).

steel string
classical/nylon
On steel string acoustic guitars,
make sure the ball end of the
string is firmly seated under
the bridge by pushing down
on the bridge pin while pulling
up on the string.
At the bridge, it is essential to create
a “locking” loop to ensure against
slippage. It is common to loop the
plain nylon treble strings under two
times and the wound strings at least
once. This will ensure that as tension
is applied to the string, it securely
locks in place.
Visit www.daddario.com to view our restringing videos.
2 – Settling the string
Use thumb and forefingers to gently stretch each string across its entire
length. Tune the string to pitch and repeat the stretching procedure two or
three times on each string. This will help stabilize your strings more quickly.
Care must be taken not to stretch the strings too aggressively. In general,
nylon strings need more stretching time before they "settle."
Note: It is common for classical plain nylon treble
strings (1st, 2nd, & 3rd) to last longer than the wound
bass strings (4th, 5th & 6th). Most professional classical
guitarists will go through two to three sets of wound
bass strings for every set of plain nylon treble
strings. To that end, you may wish to consider
our 9-string sets, which include two sets of
wound bass strings and one set of trebles.

Make sure electric guitar saddle locations are set for proper intonation with
an electronic tuner. Check acoustic guitar saddle placement by measuring
from the front of the nut to the 12th fret. Double this measurement and
compensate for string height (the stretch of the string in order to fret a note)
by adding about 3/16" at the bass E and 1/16" at the treble E. Classical
guitar saddle placement is about 2 mm or 5/64" longer than twice the 12
fret measurement.
