year after year. Kelleys Island has a charm of its own,
with it’s relaxed laid-back atmosphere. You can leave all

Getting There
Whether traveling by
ferry boat, cruise boat,
private boat or plane,
getting to Kelleys
Island is an adventure
in itself. The Kelleys
Island Ferry Boat Line
provides service from
Marblehead to Kelleys
Island. Air flights are also available from Sandusky
or Port Clinton. The Goodtime offers passenger
service to Kelleys from Sandusky and The Jet
Express offers passenger service to Kelleys via
Sandusky, Port Clinton and Put-In-Bay.

History
The Glacial Grooves
State Memorial is the
largest and most
spectacular example
of glacial grooves left
in the entire world. Signs

Indian hunting ground remain on Inscription Rock
State Memorial. This flat-topped limestone boulder
on the south shore of Kelleys Island has faint
pictographs of men, birds and animals carved by
the Erie Indians 300-400 years ago. Kelleys Island
Historical Museum - located on Division Street.

What to See and Do
Places to Stay
Fishing from various
piers or boats will thrill
you in the “Walleye
Capital of the World”
Bait shops sell supplies
and licenses, and will
aid any angler as to the current “hot” locations and lure
selection. Perch, catfish, smallmouth and white bass are
caught in quantity in their respective peak periods.
Constant lake breezes and small
waves provide ideal weather
conditions for jet-skis, and sail or
power boaters. Transient and
overnight boat dockage, gasoline,
and pump out, are available at
various marinas around the island. As the quality and
clarity of the Lake Erie waters steadily improves,
shipwrecks from the 1700-1800’s provide fun and
excitement to both snorkelers and scuba divers.

downtown area remains
the heart of island activity.

can browse among unique
gift and clothing shops.

Our grocery stores provide
all basic necessities including fresh produce and luncheon
meats. Many restaurants provide dining experiences
inside or outside from traditional Lake Erie Perch and
Walleye to pizza or sandwiches. Weekends provide a
variety of entertainment in some of our local taverns.
The island also hosts a microbrewery and winery.
There is no bank on the island, but there is a bank deposit
drop-off and several ATMs for your convenience.
Kelleys Island offers a variety of lodging choices
sure to restore your spirit, such as, The Kelleys Island
Condominium complex which is located downtown
and which provides easy access to dining, shopping
and dockage.
Choose from a wide variety of cottages, each with
it’s own unique offerings. Overnight lodgings vary,
ranging from cottages to efficiencies, to Bed and
Breakfast Inns, and a Resort Hotel.
Kelleys Island State Park - offers a sandy beach,
stone pier for fishing, boat launching ramp, and a
129 camping sites, group rent-a-camps, yurts and

Ohio State Park System - In the 676 acre Ohio
State Park system on Kelleys Island, miles of selfguided nature and hiking trails can be explored. The
North Shore Loop begins behind the Glacial Grooves
and follows the wild flower studded woods along the
north shoreline. Discover fossils along the inactive east
stone quarry, wetlands, and horseshoe lake while
hiking the East Quarry Trail.
For the Kids - Playgrounds are located at the
school and the Pavilion Ball Park. The Northeast end
of the island offers a fishing pier and Sandy Beach
which are located next to the campgrounds. Bike and
hiking trails located at the East Quarry in the State
Park might appeal to the older kids. Then of course,
there is always ice cream!

Natural Areas
The Boardwalk, on Ward Rd., winds across the ancient
shoreline, through a variety of meadow and woodlands,
to the edge of the pristine North Pond Nature Preserve.
Climb the tower at the end for a view of this beautiful area.
Glacial Grooves is the most spectacular example of glacial
grooves left in the entire world. A self-guided tour explains
how the grooves were formed and some island history.
North Shore Loop Trail leads past the “old crusher
and lime kiln” through thick woodlands and along the
shoreline to view the Canadian islands.
East Quarry Trail follows the edge of an abandoned
quarry to reveal its stark beauty and Horseshoe Lake.
Birding is a big event during the spring and fall migrations
since the island sits on the overlap zone of both the eastern
and central flyways. The island serves as a stepping stone
used by multitudes of migrating birds to cross Lake Erie.
