OCTOBER 20th POMONA SWAP MEET...

One thing about Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter is that

we are a very active group of people. We are fortunate to live in the center of the
car universe so there is no shortage of events. When the National Council’s picnic was
recently cancelled the event Gods must
have been looking down on us. We
received a message from the folks that run
the world famous Pomona Swap Meet
asking us to be the featured car club for
the October 6th event. An arrangement
was made and with it came 20 free entry
passes for a vehicle, passenger, and driver.
FREE is always a good price for any of us so
it was easy to attract 18 trucks including 5
guests! It was a great turnout.
Bob Koranda really came through for us by
arriving on Saturday to socialize with some
of his friends and to hold down our
assigned spot. He was joined early Sunday
by Rich, Ed, and Tudy so all was well. continued on pages 6-7
Keane Vann and his wife were our guests.
We met at the recent Western Nationals.

A Simple Strut... by Steve Stillwell
For this issue, I have opted to share a rather simple tech tip that
will save you big bucks and a big headache any time you are working
on your truck’s front suspension. A truck’s suspension (springs)
are fabricated to support the weight of your engine and all of the
accessories as well as the weight of a wet radiator, battery etc. When
your engine is not in place the front suspension will fully extend, pushing
the A-arms as far down as they can travel. This is especially true during
the time that you are also changing out the front suspension system of
your pickup.
Coil-over shock sprung suspension systems are not
as affected as the ever-popular Mustang II style which
features a 14-inch long new spring that has not
been “cycled”, a term for relaxing a truck’s coil spring
suspension. The problem is simple, if the A-arms stay
fully extended for a long period of time, the rubber
boots surrounding the upper and lower ball joints will
literally be sliced by the edge of the A-arm cup as the
rubber is pinched.
Also, the boots of the rack & pinion steering will
be stretched beyond their limits and fail. While the
ball joint cups and rack boots will endure normal
suspension travel and an occasional full extension,
they will not survive months of being pinched in
between metal parts and stretched for long periods
of time.
So, a simple cure is to fabricate metal bars which
are the same length of your shocks when the A-arms
are level. As shown in the photo, they do not have to
be expensive, machine turned rods as simple bars
fabricated from thick bar stock will perform quite well for this task.
At Total Cost Involved we sell bushings for coil-over shocks and A-arms every day. Customers
often say that they find it hard to believe they have failed because they haven’t driven these cars
and truck for months at a time and accumulated very little mileage! Truth is, bushings, boots
and seals will last longer if the vehicle is being driven as the lubricants are put into motion and
the rubber components are being flexed. Thought I would share this tip and info to my fellow
truck builders!

VP Report... OK, What’s Ed up to now???

So I call Ed the other day to see what is
going on with his truck. You see he had
asked me a few gas tank questions several
weeks back and I wanted to see what he
decided to do. I knew he was getting things
ready to paint and had a FEW other things
in mind.
One thing leads to another and Ed shows
up without his truck. “I’m still working on
it” he says as he sends me a few shots of
his fenders being sanded by his grand kids
(see last issue). Time marches on... he
talks about Tudy shooting some color on
the fenders... and the project continues.
Then comes our October 20th date at
the Pomona Swap Meet and Ed shows up
real early with his truck. The gang gathers around and Ed give that big grin saying
“Check this out!”. He pulls a pin and flips up
the bed of his truck proudly saying. “I found
everything I needed to do this at Home
Deopt!”. It is actually really cool and will be
a great addition to his truck when he and
Tudy finish the job.

Editor’s Ramblings... Don’t be afraid to drive it...

Years of experience has resulted in more than a few “strandings” in my time. Big John and I have
parked our butts on the side of quite a few highways over the 40+ years we have known each other.
The only thing that has changed is the level of my Auto Club coverage so why worry? To be able
to drive the crap out of my truck and have a great time is worth a few inconveniences. This year at
Cruisin for a Cure, my thermostat stuck and I was going no place fast. That is until I saw the Auto
Club flat bed roll past. A quick phone call and
within a few minutes I was riding in style. As luck
would have it, Mike Hay came rolling past in
April’s Nash and gave us a ride home. It seems
that Mike and this Nash are becoming the EMT’s
of Pickups Limited (see page 23 for “BAIL OUT”).
And that is a big part of what it is all about when
you are in a club such as Pickups Limited. Somebody is always there to offer a helping hand like
Mike was for me. Of course there is also somebody there to witness all of your screw ups and
miss-fortunes, just to rub it in a bit (thanks John).
The point is that all vehicles are going to have a
problem from time to time no matter how old they
are so why be afraid to drive them? Roadside
repairs are sometimes the best part of a long
distance trip and can often happen close to home.
Yes that truck is your baby but don’t baby it. Drive
that thing more in 2014. Don’t miss out on some
of the great events we attend each and every

Give Me A Brake...

Avoiding The Wallet Flush
We’ve heard of courtesy flushes, bird flushing, a royal flush and even eye
flushing. So what does it mean to have a wallet flush.
The term Wallet Flush is a derogatory term used to describe the practice
of automotive fluid flushing that either isn’t necessary and/or has little or
no value.
A Time And Place
There is a time and place for
everything, even automotive
fluid changing. The big question then becomes “when is the time and place”? Many
automotive fluids today are specifically formulated to better
handle oxidation and molecule break down.
Most vehicle manufactures will state in their owners manual
the mileage and/or time intervals for fluid changes. This
should be a guide. And, I emphasize the word GUIDE.
Common sense and actual fluid condition trumps a GUIDE.
Routine System Repairs
When an automotive system with fluid is being repaired, like power steering, automatic transmission
or the cooling system, the entire system should be flushed or have a complete fluid change. When
a system component fails, usually contaminates in the system are a result. These contaminates will
cause other component failures.
Fluid Condition
How can you tell if a fluid needs to be changed as a
maintenance procedure? It’s not always easy. Engine oil can be analyzed, although somewhat inconvenient. Differential fluid is even harder to evaluate
visually. One car manufacture recommends never
changing differential fluid and another states in it’s
owner’s manual to change differential fluid every
17,000 miles with others somewhere in between.
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid is probably the easiest to test. Electronic
testers are readily available to test the moisture content. 1% to 2% is acceptable. 3% is marginal and 4% or more indicates a need for attention.

Engine Oil
Engine flushing is almost never needed. Today’s motor
oils are formulated to prevent many of the issues we had
with sludge and lesser quality oil. Many late model cars
have sensors to evaluate the motor oil condition. Oil in
older vehicles should be changed based on mileage and
driving conditions.
Engine Coolant
Engine coolant can be tested for boiling point. If it’s clean
and at the correct boiling point, it’s good to go.
Transmission Fluid
When transmission fluid has that burnt smell and is discolored, it
might be time for a change. Other than that, no service should be
needed until transmission repairs are done or as indicated in your
manual.
Power Steering Fluid
Power steering fluid falls under basically the same guide lines as
transmission fluid.
The Bottom Line
In nutshell, when you go to that national quick lube place or
other automotive facility, beware of the “Fluid Flush” services if they are recommended. If you are told your vehicle
needs a “Flush” it might really need one. If this happens it
would be best to ask why the service is recommended. If
it’s not recommended by the vehicle manufacture or if there
isn’t a good reason, like contaminates, ask more questions.

And Now for Something Completely Different...by Chris Travers
The Anaheim High School Alumni Association hosted the
3rd Annual Colony Classic Car Show on Saturday, Oct.
12, 2013. This is one of the few shows in our area that
is actually growing in attendance with over 125 vehicles
this year. Cool classics were displayed all over the interior of the school campus which is located in the heart of
the historic Colony District in central Anaheim.
The event featured food booths, live entertainment,
vendors, family-friendly activities as well as most all of
the student clubs on site to showcase their talents and
projects. This was truly a great setting and a different
experience from the normal “drive to and sit on your butt
all day car show”. The energy of the kids on campus was truly inspiring. Monies raised were directed
toward student scholarships, school programs and restoration projects.
With October becoming a busy month for our Chapter, Pickups Limited of Orange County was
represented by only two members; Rich Miller
(who won the Best Truck Award) and your Editor, but there were plenty of other F-Series and
older Ford trucks that were not in attendance at
our F-100 Western Nationals... more P.R. work

Cruisin’ Grand in Escondido has
become the #1 car cruise in the
nation. This event officially runs from
5pm to 9pm but sources say that you
need to get there no later than 3pm
to get a decent spot because there is always
a ton of people. We left Ken Grody Ford at 1pm
for the trip down to Escondido on one of the hottest days of the year.
My AC didn’t work but as long as we had the windows down and were
hauling butt, it wasn’t too bad.
Once in town, the OC group made up of Rich & Randi, Bill and Andrea, Mike Hay, your Editor with
his “date” Dusty met up with several folks including Al & Pam Ubrun from our Inland Empire Chapter,
Charlie & June Crossman and Ron Hangartner from San Diego along with several other San Diego
members that came and went
throughout the evening. This
turned into a really nice turnout
for all of Pickups Limited.
This particular evening was Fire
truck night which can make even
the toughest dude giddy like a
school child. Horse drawn rigs
from the turn of the century
parked beside modern behemoths displays the history of the
mobile fire brigade. If that is not
enough for you, they also do fire
truck rides for both big and little
kids.

Cruisin’ For A Cure at the OC Fair
& Events Center in Costa Mesa
supports the City of Hope Prostate
Cancer Program. This show featured more than 3,600 vehicles
on display, 200 vendors, and a
cruise route that stretched for one
and a half miles. We saw everything
on wheels at this event. Pickups Limited of Orange County had our regular reserved parking area and BBQ
thanks to Glenn Kerr and his helpers
and made our annual $2,500 donation to The City of Hope thanks to
the proceeds from Jeff’s Fun Run.
The mission of this show is to
raise awareness and support for
prostate cancer research. The
show has been providing free
prostate cancer screenings for
participants since its debut 13
years ago. To date, the organization
has raised more than $1 million in

1st Ever Ford Truck Jam - October 6th... by Dianne Hamano
It was a beautiful day and the setting was scenic, overlooking the bay of Long Beach in front of us
and the Long Beach skyline behind us. The Ford dealers went all out for this first ever Ford Truck
Jam. They had bands scheduled and food trucks and new Ford trucks on display! Chuck, Lenny, Joe,
Rich, Robert, Mas and Dianne met at Schooner or Later at the Marina in Long Beach. After a hearty
breakfast (as seen on Diners Drive Ins and Dives), Chuck led us to the Long Beach Convention Center
parking area! There were vendors and a play area set up for the young at heart. It was free event for spectators! Participants had a registration fee however, we got in for free through Ken Grody Ford. It was too bad
that there wasn’t more participation and spectators. Our good friends Joe and Diane Chandlee from
Torrance won a nice trophy and a full set of new tires for their beautiful Gilmore hauler.
It was the end of the day, so a few had already gone home like Robert Flores. Mas and I would
guess that only 40 - 45 participants and maybe 100 spectators came through. It was hard to tell because they had the
dealer’s truck mingled in. They kept announcing to call friends
and tell them it was a free show with live bands and a celebrity
guest.It was really geared to the younger people. The music
was loud and we didn’t know the celebrity guest, but had a
good time just the same. Chuck was ready to go home after
a half a hour of listening to that loud music. He did mention to
lower the volume to a few of the staff, which they did. It was
really too bad as the event seemed well organized. I think they
had more staff then
participants though
with a bunch of college student volunteers
from CSULB.
It might have done
better as a show if it
was all Fords, not just
trucks! Oh well, live
and learn... maybe
next year.

Super Tour 2013 Sept. 20-29… What a week

This tour was all put together by Bob and Barb Baxter. Attending from
our Chapter was Rudy & Edith Weber with Bill & Andrea Crisel. 38 in all attended the tour.
We all stayed at the La Quinta Inn in Poway and used it as our base hotel. We had breakfast
together every day then a meeting in the parking lot to roundup the cars and trucks for our
daily ventures.
Friday Sept 20th - Welcome Dinner at Filippi’s Pizza Grotto
Saturday, Sept 21st - Campo
Train Ride & Museum: We road
on the San Diego Short Line
Railway to the Cal. Mex. Boarder
inside a Tunnel at 10 miles and
hour and got a good view of the
border fence. The Museum was
just packed with old and older trains. Off to lunch in the Laguna
Mountains at the Pine House Cafe & Tavern, (Good Food) We
drove all day and had a great time.
Sunday, Sept 22nd - USS Midway Tour and Hornblower Harbor Tour: This was Fleet week in SD. You
can never see the whole ship in one day. Edith and I tried with the
help of the ships elevators and lots of benches. We had lunch at
Anthony’s Fish Grotto… we needed the rest. While sitting in the park
waiting for the Harbor Tour next to the homeless encampment, we
saw Gabby Giffords from Tucson and her husband pass by.
Monday, Sept 23rd - Old Town Trolley Tour: Downtown San Diego, up
and and over to the Great Del Coronado Hotel, back to Little Italy for
a snack, then off to Old Town for dinner with our group at Miguel’s
Cocina Restaurant. Another full day!
Tuesday, Sept 24th - Cabrillo National Monument and Balboa Park: San Diego Auto Museum in the
park. Everyone had a good time and saw a lot of old vintage cars and a lot of walking. Everyone was
getting tired and headed back to the Hotel for Rest and Cherries.
Wednesday, Sept 25th - Craftsmanship Museum: The
purpose of the Joe Martin Foundation is to Recognize
and Reward outstanding craftsmanship in projects at
the small end of the size scale. All working steam, gas,
Hot Rod engines were all made form a block of solid
metal. This is a very large display of great small items
of all kinds, and all working. Off to Barona Casino for
a great buffet lunch and gambling. Bill had fun today!
We all had too much to eat but that’s what we came
for. The food was the best ever or was it the Bananas
Foster. Another long day driving our Ford Trucks was
the best part.

Thursday, Sept 26th - Free Day: Edith and I went to the San
Diego Zoo. We visited all our relatives. They were all in great
shape! We took the guided bus-tour, ExpressBus, and SkyFari Aerial Tram and still a lot of walking, that was very hard
on Edith. She kept on marching on. The Zoo was a great day
outing.
Friday, Sept 27th
- Trip to Julian:
On the way, we
visited Bates Nut
Farm, Palomar
Mountain Observatory and the city of Julian to check things out. Edith
and I went to the Julian apple Pie shop to just rest and use the rest
room then off to Brad and Jackie’s home for a pit BBQ Dinner. Brad
and Jackie have a Dream of a home in the hills. Brad has a Man Cave
(Garage) to die for. The food never stopped coming, then a large verity
of deserts. To top off the party we were serenaded by Susan Thomas
(what a voice) and on the guitar by Charlie and Vince.
Saturday, Sept 28th - Beach Party BBQ at the Coronado Island Navy Seals Base: We all just relaxed with our great new and old
friends and our Cherries. What a great day again in San Diego with friends and our Ford Trucks we all love.
Sunday, Sept 29th - The trip home by way of a 107 mile ride to a
family reunion in Yucaipa. What a ride! We got High Fives all week
and a lot of them our trip home.
PS. Awards;
Edith got an Award for being the Energy Bunny by never giving up
and always making it to the end of the day. I got an Award for not filling up my gas tank enough to make the day
trips… I had to double back and get gas near Compo!

ABOUT US
Pickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently
the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We
are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western
Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business
meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as
various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you
feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!
• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.
• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to
paint and body to interior total restoration.
• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help.
• Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or
F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.
• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!
• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.
• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although
there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
