President's Corner
The 1984 Board of Directors is pleased to announce that there will be no increase in
dues this year. The present fee of $280.00 is quite a bargain when you compare our
fine pool and tennis facilities with others in North Atlanta.
We have an excellent Swim Team program for the kids and very competitive ALTA tennis
teams for all levels of play.
In addition, the three holiday parties (Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day) along
with the Sunday Family Nights are features most of the other neighborhood clubs do
not have.
The single most important element that keeps the Brittany Club running strong is
membership participation. However, at this time, we have approximately 10 openings
for Membership which need to be filled as soon as possible to enable the club to
fulfill all improvements planned in this year's budget.
Please encourage your
neighbors who are not members to apply for membership. Enclosed is an application
form. Contact a Board Member for assistance. This year's Board of Directors are as
follows:

If everyone continues to participate and help out when called upon, this year should
be more enjoyable than ever. I look forward to meeting and seeing everyone at the

Membership
Since the last Brittany Bits we have had resignations from Bill McElhannon, Walt
Basco, and Roger Bauer.
A hearty welcome to new members Joel and Al Culley who reside at 3302 Finistere
Court. Joel is with the City of Atlanta.
A reminder to all members to solicit new members within the Club area of Oglethorpe
Estates, Brittany, Cambridge Park, Hampton Hall, Sunderland, DuBerry Court and Wood
Valley Court. Call Terry Mullane (237-0469) for further information or assistance.
Tennis
ALTA Tennis:
Brittany has four entries in ALTA mixed doubles this winter. These
teams are competing at the A-l, A-5, B-3 and C-l levels. The regular season sched
ule continues on Sunday afternoons through March 4.
The rosters for men's and women's Spring ALTA are due February 14. There will be
four men's teams playing Saturday mornings beginning March 24th and four women's
teams playing Thursday mornings beginning March 22nd.
In addition, efforts are
being made to start a C-level entry in the Business Women's League, with play set
for Sunday afternoons. Call Cheryl Barlow if you are interested.
Junior boys and junior girls ALTA teams are being managed by Judy Thompson and Dona
King, respectively. The girls' matches begin Tuesday, March 20th, and the boys
start the next day.
Players may be added to teams as late as two weeks after play begins. If you are
not on a roster but would like to play, contact the appropriate captain or anyone on
the Tennis Committee.
1984 Eyents: The Tennis Committee for 1984 includes Jim Stirling (Chairman), Mary
Cartwright (Women's Coordinator), Stan Krivo, Rita McDonald, Len O'Neill and Lynn
Bush. We expect to conduct mixed doubles tournaments on Memorial Day and Labor Day
weekends, and doubles tournaments on July 4th~ as well as other adult and junior
events throughout the year. If you have an idea for an event you would like to see
added to the agenda, please contact one of the committee members.

President's Corner
The pool is being prepared for opening, the bathrooms are under renovation, tennis
is in full swing and the Memorial Day Party promises to be a great social event. We
need a big turnout for workday on April 28, 1984. All of us have baseball games,
tennis matches, yard work and other distrac ions on work day, but you owe it 0 the
club to come down for an hour or two and participate in getting your club ready for
the summer.
We are still short on membership. Talk to your non-member neighbors to see if we
can fill our vacancies. Our bUdget is based on fixed cost obligations, and if we
don't have 220 members, the dues will probably have to be increased to cover our
overhead.
If anyone has any suggestions for improving the operation of the various aspects of
the club, except for impeachment of the President, please call and discuss them with
me. We encourage membership participation in all areas of operation.
See you at the pool.

club are Guy and Lee Marley and thei r daughter Christy. The Marleys live at 1768
South Johnson Ferry Road, and Guy is with Star Blends.
A reminder to all members to solicit new members within the club area of Oglethorpe
Estates, Brittany, Cambridge Park, Hampton Hall, Sunderland, DuBerry Court and Wood
Valley Court. Recent resignations from the club have resulted in several vacancies.
A membership application is enclosed. If you know any families who may be interest
ed in joining, extend an invitation and application. Call Terry Mullane (237-0469)
for further information or assistance.

Social
Social chairman, Ann Epps, reports that Vince Giovi nazzo and committee have plans
well underway for the upcoming Memorial Day Party on Saturday, May 26th. Mark your
calendar now and plan to attend.
S.'nn1ng Pool
With Mother Nature's cooperation, the pool will be open on weekends for all Brittany
members starting May 5. The swim team will begin practice May 7 from 4-6 p.m. every
weekday through May. Our guards for the year will be SuSu as manager and Holly,
Dana and Kathy as guards. Holly will be swim coach with Dana as her assistant.
Kathy will be back as diving coach.
There will be a workday April 28 (rain date April 29). We need everybody. Chairs
need to be pulled out and cleaned, deck washed and swept, pool cover removed and
cleaned and pool cleaned -- a complete spring cleaning around the grounds.
Please
bring brooms, rakes or just yourself anytime that day and help get everything in
tip-top Brittany shape. Refreshments will be provided.
Enclosed in th Bits is a copy of pool rules. Please read carefully, with special
attention to #5 and #6, as these will be strictly enforced by our guards for the
safety of all children.
There have been several complaints regarding the use of radios at the pool. Please
be courteous and keep radios turned down so as not to disturb those around you who
may not wish to hear your music.
Swim and Diving Team
Swim and diving practice will begin May 7 from 4 - 5 p.m. for ages 10 and under and
5 - 6 p.m. for ages over 10. Swim suits will be on sale at Brittany on Tuesday, May
8. There will be a brief but important meeting Monday, May 7, at 5 p.m. Please,
all swimmers and parents, try to attend because there will be some changes announced
and details of upcoming events, parties and plans for the '84 season will be dis
cussed.
If you are interested in the Dynamo Stroke Clinic to be offered in May, please
contact me for information concerning dates, times and fees.
It is an excellent
course to help you get in shape for our summer league.
We will be recycling aluminum cans as a fund raiser for the swim team this year so
start saving them now. Bring what you have saved to our meeting on the 7th. The
more cans we collect, the more fun we can have this summer.
For those parents who volunteer to be certified as judges, the diving coaches clinic
will be sometime in May. I will have all the information on the date by the 15th of
April. Please call me if you are interested. We need at least three judges.

I am looking forward to having all our swimmers back as well as all newcomers to
make this not only a successful year but a summer full of fun.

ALTA:
Two of Brittany's four winter mixed doubles teams made it to the playoffs
before being eliminated. The A-I team captained by Bill Smith finished second in
its division to earn a playoff spot, while Harry De Meza's B-3 team finished on top
of its division with a 32-3 record. Congratulations to all involved for the fine
showingl
We have 9 teams in Spring ALTA play -- 3 men's, 4 women's and 2 junior's. Regular
season play in each will continue through the first week in May. It's not too early
to think about the summer schedule. If you are new to the club or have not other
wise been on a roster recently, fee 1 free to contact any of the tenn i s committee
members or team captains.
Club Notes:
We're planning a mixed doubles tournament in connection with the
Memorial Day weekend festivities (May 26-28).
We're considering several formats
with a goal of fostering good competition and socializing.
Watch the board for
details and a sign-up sheet in mid-May.
We continue to have isolated incidents of vandalism or mischief with respect to our
courts and equipment. The absence of a bench at Court 4 is a recent example of the
problem. Replacement or repair of affected items is a needless waste of members'
time and money. Please consider the preservation of all our tennis facilities to be
a collective responsibility, and take appropriate action where you see abuse of any
kind.
Jim Stirling
BUildings/Grounds
Renovation of the Club bathrooms will take place over the next month. During this
time, the ALTA teams will need to make other arrangements since the bathrooms will
be unavailable for use. We regret the inconvenience, but the improvements should
make it all worthwhile.
WORKDAY IS COMING
Workday is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, starting at 9 a.m. (rain day is Sunday,
April 29). We urge everybody to come down and pitch in. Even a small amount of
time can really help. Free beer and soft drinks will be provided.

Not enough of us realize we have a real hero in our midst. Hurne Cole, a new member,
took to our Silver Lake like a duck takes to water.
While feeding our mallards
their daily bread, he noticed one of the ducks cou d not fly because of fishing line
wrapped around one of her legs. After several weeks of trying, he finally caught
her, had a veterinarian remove the line, and the mallard lives happily ever after.
What a great story and grand fellowl Thanks, Hume, for your efforts. Al Bloch does
live onl
Did you know, too, that we have more champions in our midst? Kim Mosel~ and Chuck
McCuen coach the Women's and Men's Tennis Teams at Georgia State.
Now how often
does that happen?
Cynthia Morrison and Mary Bush showed thei r expertise at the
recent County meet by capturing 2nd and 9th in diving. Congratulate Casey Hoerner
for her 3rd place achievement in freestyle and Patricia Powell for winning the
individual medley and 2nd place in the SOD freestyle.
She must be following in
brother Mike's steps whose swim team just won the North Junior College Championship.
Seems those early morning practices at the Brittany pool do payoff!

Since the last Brittany Bits we have had resignations from Dick Smith and Jim
Thomas. We also had four terminations due to non-payment of dues.
A hearty welcome to new members Suzanne Palmer and Keith Avera, Foster and Vel vet
Brown, Dan and Jane Carr, Ed and Nora Ford, Larry and Sheila Moriarty, Richard and
Janine Selberg, Bill and Kristen Stanhope, and Darlene Vaughan.
On Sunday night, June 17, 1984, Father's Day, we are having a cookout at the club.
We encourage you to bring prospective member famil ies with you to the cookout to
take a look at our club and the fun we have. We still have vacancies in our member
ship roster and need a few more members. Those families eligible for membership are
those residing in Oglethorpe Estates, Brittany, Cambridge Park, Hampton Hall,
Sunderland, DuBerry Court and Wood Valley Court.
If you know of any families in
these neighborhoods who might be interested in joining, invite them to the cookout
and sell them on our club. For further information and appl ications, call Terry
Mullane (237-0469) •
We have been having trouble with dogs wandering around the club
facilities unattended. These dogs are becoming a real nuisance due to their odorous
residue, fighting and the danger to small chilrlren. We have had numerous complaints
from members. Please keep your dogs at home or, at the very least, on a leash while
around the club facilities. We do not want to ask the county to impound one of your
family pets.

AL~:
Summer play for ALTA mixed doubles begins June 16. Brittany will again field
four teams -- two A's, one B and one C.
This should cover virtually any skill
level; so if you'd like to play and aren't already 011 a roster, see any member of
the Tennis Committee or team captains. All matches are on Saturday mornings.
The last two seasons of men's ALTA at the C level have shown that we have a numbers
problem. There were too few players for the two teams entered in the fall of 1983,
and there was an overabundance of players for the consolidated team which competed
in the spring of this year. Bill Roberts is working on a solution and has prepared
the enclosed survey as a means of ascertaining the desires of those affected. If
you are a past or prospective player at th{s level, please take the time to complete
the form and return it to Bill at your earliest convenience.
Congratulations to Brittany's Boys 14 and under AL~ team who won the City Champion
ship May 19thl Playing superbly al~ season were: Richard Bush, Jody Culley, Ken
Doss, Walter Gourgues, Randy Harkins, Kris Hutchinson, Mi e McMahon, and Chris

Mary Cartwright is on the lookout for more women interested in playing fall ALTA.
Please check with Mary if you would like more information.

you who played this Spring know, our C2 doubles was blessed with either too many
players or too few, depending on your point of view and how much you wanted to play.
Based on the returns from the survey, we will either continue with one doubles team;
one doubles and one singles/doubles team; or two singles/doubles teams. Regardless,

Fourth of July
Our traditional JUly 4th festivities once again provided a wealth of entertainment,
food and drink for many Brittany families and their guests. As with most events of
this nature, the day's success depended on the efforts of many volunteers.
We
served in excess of 260 dinners, and Reggie and Carole Jones, Larry and Barbara
Mattix, Drew and Gail Davidson, Leslie Krivo and Pete Cabrelli all provided invalua
ble assistance in bringing that about. In addition, I want to extend special thanks
to Ron and Jo Ann Carr for the long hours they put in on the 4th and the previous
weekend providing cold beer and soda; to Brian and Lesley Strange, who got the day
started right with a fine children's parade; to Tony and Diane Jabaley for the
outstanding field games; to SuSu, Holly and Dana, who provided hours of enjoyment
with their pool games; and to Jim Bedell for putting the finishing touch on the day
with his colorful fireworks display. My thanks to all of youl

Continued, uncontrolled erosion of the membership base
will require dues increases to offset those paying only 1/2 the

At the same time, there are numerous families living in
the Brittany Area who have expressed an interest in joining the
Club, b find it difficult to come up with the initiation feE,

Admittedly,
Brittany's fees and dues are low ccmp2red with clubs wit~
