YeJ ID Parlcing Plan
I am writing to. express my
support for the Roosevelt Center/Community Center Parking
and Traffic Management Plans
submitted to the Roosevelt
Center Merchants and Community Center users -by Celia Wilson on May 21.
I understand that this plan
will cOme before City Council
on June I 0. I encourage the
council to direct staff to proceed with this plan.
I was especiaJiy pleased to
see that staff recommends
changing the parking restrictions f-or the half hour parking
adjacent to the Post Office
from all hours to ending at 8
p.m. This wiiJ be very helpful
to the Greenbelt Arts Center.
Perhaps, in addition to the
time change, the restriction
could be changed from all days
to Monday through Saturday in
order to further coincide the
restriclion with when the Post
Office lobby is open.

Cherrywood Lane to one lane
in each direction is the fifth
option. This would mean 2-4
feet in width for bicycle lanes
on both sides and a· continuous
median strip. Cros-sing the street
could be safer for pedestrians,
as only one l.ane would have to
be crossed in each direction and
there would be a median strip
to stand on. Traffic speeds
should decrease, Wilson said,
but traffic del~ys should i_ncrease.
The.. sixth option is to implement option fi~e only along the
section of Cherrywood Lane
near Springhill Like. Wide
curb Janes would provide bi·
cycle access for the rest of
Cherrywood Lane.
Citizen Response
Dozens of citizens were
present at the council meeting
and a number spoke .in favor of
from Springhi11 Lake. and for
them Cherrywood Lane is a
residential slreet. (Council has
included in the past a trail from
Metro to Cherrywood Lan-e
crossing the property owned by
A.H. Smith in the Trails Master
Plan; July 25, 1994, however
the city does not have funding
or right..of-way to construct this
trail.)
Response of the Neighbors
The
neighbors
of
Cherrywood
Lane
spoke
against diminishing the size of
Cherrywood Lane to accommodate bi-cycle lanes.
Metro officials are against
reduction of traffic lanes since
all local traffic gets to· the station via Cherrywood, inCluding
cars and all six. bus routes that
serve the station. Metro expects
a significant increase in usage of
the Greenbelt station when the

Early History
Greenbelt was born..in con·
a federal
experiment in social engi·
neering designed to provide
both low-cost housing in a
well-planned community and
constructiorr jobs for hundreds of men in the Washing! on area dislocated by the
Great Depression. Llke other
New Deal programs, it drew
criticism as an unprecedented
and costly incursion by the
federal government into the
private market.
It was
sneeringly referred to by a
cont~mp~rary reporter for the
Wailflingron Posr as "Tugwell
Town" referring. to Rexford
G. Tugwell. the Rooseveir
adminiscntion"s chief policy
architect of the "greenbelt
lownship"' program. At rhe
same time it d.rew world~wide
acclaim from city planners
Cor its innovations in -urban
design. The Resettlement
Administration
careCully
screened its first reside-nu f~r
good character ·and compatibility by requirin& thenx. to
rill out lensthy questionnaires. The greenbelt township program foundered. how·
ever, and only three Q-f the
more than 20 cities originally
enviSioned were completed.
The federal role in Greenbell
came to an end in 1954 with
the sale of 'he housing stock
to the housing cooperative,
Greenbelt Homes. lncorpo·
rated.
