We offer the entire range of these professional, German made soft pastels. Their extreme softness and
color strength is achieved by Schmincke’s very traditional formulation. Their color range includes 400 colors! Schmincke offers 77 pure colors and then mixes
each pure color with black artist pigment for a rich,
deep tone and to achieve their lighter pastel tints they
also mix each pure color with three levels of white artist pigment, each graduation lighter than the previous
mixture. To round out their line, they also offer 15 rich
colors consisting of special darks, lights, metallics and

DIANE TOWNSEND SOFT PASTELS
Diane Townsend began making her own pastels in
1972 when she found that the colors she observed in
nature were not available. She makes a beautiful range
from the deepest darks to pastels that are so pale,
they literally have just a whisper of color.
Soft Form pastels have a very soft consistency, dense
covering power and tinting strength, as well as clarity, depth, and incredible richness. They are made in
small batches using the best pigments, bronze powers, and pearlescent powders available with no fillers
or extenders added. Very little has been done to alter
the natural pigment color. Each pigment has different
qualities, therefore the pastels may vary in consistency, from soft to firm, from smooth and buttery to dry
and powdery. Diane uses very little binder to hold the
pigment together. Some colors have a surface “skin”
that yields to reveal the soft pastel within. Sandpaper
will help get these newer pastels started.
We offer another handmade pastel formulated with
pumice. Diane Townsend originally created these pastels to eliminate the need for fixative. Terrages Pastels
are made with extra fine pumice to allow it to “bite”
into the surface of the paper and provide a base coat.
This base coat provides a surface similar to a sanded
pastel paper, even on smoother papers. The pumice
base coat allows an artist to apply multiple top layers
of softer pastels. Available in a beautiful range of 177
colors, shapes and sizes will vary but average around
1-3/8” x 1” x 3/8”. The addition of pumice makes them
very sturdy and ideal for large scale works.
Thin Line pastels are similar in texture to the Terrages
pastels. They are made with extremely fine pumice in
the pastel binder and pigment mixture; so that each
stroke of pastel will literally bite into your paper. They
are not gritty; they are very smooth and velvety- just
made with a different pastel base. These sticks are
thinner and just a touch longer than the other pastel
lines by Diane.
Due to the handmade nature of Diane’s pastels, color,
shape, and size may vary from shipment to shipment.

UNISON SOFT PASTELS
Unison pastels are the creation of artist John Hersey.
From a converted coach house in Northumberland,
England, skilled artisans lovingly make Unison pastels
by hand, cutting no corners, accepting no compromise. The make small batches of 100 to 200 pastels at
a time. Each stick is hand rolled and allowed to air dry.
This produces a soft pastel which is eager to embrace
the tooth of your drawing paper. There is a richness,
a smoothness, an intensity you will find nowhere else.
John Hersey developed Unison’s color scheme in unified cycles of 18 colors. After 15 years of experimentation, his pastels reflect the true nature of color. Unison
pastels are a work of art themselves!

WALLIS PASTEL PAPER
Wallis Professional Grade paper offers an amazingly
durable surface with a very forgiving tooth. The surface features an off white waterproof coating with a
white aluminum oxide abrasive for an incredible texture that will accept up to 25 layers of soft pastels.
This Professional Grade paper uses a cardstock which
is neutral pH and acid free and has an archival rating
of 300 years. However, the cardstock is not made from
cotton and the back is not primed, therefore, we do
NOT recommend this paper for water based paints.
Wallis Museum Grade, when available, is our best
selling pastel paper. It has an amazingly durable surface with a very forgiving tooth. The off white waterproof coating uses a white aluminum oxide abrasive
for an incredible texture that will hold up to 25 layers
of soft pastels. The Museum Grade uses a 100% cotton base paper which is neutral pH, acid free and has
an archival rating of 500 years. The cotton rag base
