Heritage Board (NHB). Since 1996, it has represented and
comprises a collective of public and private museums,
heritage galleries and unique attractions of science and
discovery in Singapore. With more than 55 members
currently, the MR strives to develop a stronger museumgoing culture in Singapore while positioning museums as

Battle For Singapore
February – March
To commemorate the anniversary of the Fall of Singapore in
1942, the MR organises a series of guided tours, exhibitions and
public talks aimed at educating the general public about this key

the Japanese Occupation.

The Museum Roundtable Arts & Heritage Village @ Istana Art Event
is held on the weekend before National Day in conjunction with
Singapore’s National Day celebration. Through hands-on activities,

The Art Retreat Museum is Singapore’s first
private museum to showcase a substantial
collection of modern Asian and European art.
Established in 2003 and incorporating the Wu
Guanzhong Gallery, the museum has a collection
of 1,500 paintings by more than 135 artists.
The main gallery of the Art Retreat Museum
features temporary and travelling exhibitions

Established in 2008, the NUS Baba House was
once the ancestral home of a Straits Chinese
family. It is now conceived as a heritage house to
promote appreciation, reflection and research into
Straits Chinese history and culture.
The first and the second floor of the NUS Baba
House reference the Straits Chinese community’s
material culture dating back to the early 20th
century. The third floor gallery hosts temporary
exhibitions, providing an avenue for researchers
and art practitioners to explore and contribute
to the evolving discourse on the Straits Chinese
culture, hybridity, architecture, conservation and
urban development.

The NUS Museum focuses on regional Asian
art and culture, and leverages on its collection
and curatorial practices to provide resources for
teaching and research in support of NUS' mission
to transform the way people think and work
through education, research and service.
The roots of the NUS Museum can be traced to
the establishment of the University of Malaya
Art Museum in 1955. Its collection of over 8,000
artefacts and artworks are divided across four
collections: the Lee Kong Chian Collection, the
South and Southeast Asian Collection, the Ng
Eng Teng Collection and the Straits Chinese
Collection, housed at NUS Baba House.

Opened in 1996, the Singapore Art Museum
(SAM) is a contemporary art museum which
focuses on art-making and art-thinking in
Singapore, Southeast Asia and Asia,
encompassing a worldwide perspective on
contemporary art practice.

of contemporary art from the region, SAM
advocates and makes accessible interdisciplinary

Established in 1993, the Tan Swie Hian Museum
is the first museum in Singapore dedicated to a
living artist. The highlight of the museum is its
collection of 100 works of art from the 1960s to
2010s by Tan Swie Hian.
The museum showcases oil and acrylic paintings,
calligraphy, ink and colour paintings as well as
prints by the artist. Complementing the collection
are objects belonging to Tan Swie Hian such as
his published books, manuscripts, seals, book
certificates and medals.

Established in 1993, the Asian Civilisations
Museum (ACM) is dedicated to exploring Asia’s
rich artistic heritage, especially the ancestral
cultures of Singaporeans. Currently housed in
the Empress Place Building, gazetted as a
National Monument on 14 February 1992,
the museum traces its roots to the 19th century
Raffles Museum.
ACM focuses on the historical connections
among Asian cultures, and between Asia and the
world. The history of Asia is examined through
Singapore’s role as a port city. International
exhibitions and annual programmes such as
the River Nights festival encourage visitors to
connect closely with arts and culture.

Located in three beautifully-restored shophouses
along Pagoda Street, the Chinatown Heritage
Centre serves as the gateway into Singapore’s
Chinatown where visitors can trace the footsteps
of Singapore’s early pioneers and discover the
personal stories of people who made Chinatown
their home.
The centre is the only place in Singapore that
features recreations of the original interiors of the
shophouses during the 1950s and offers visitors
a rare glimpse into the lives of Chinatown's early
residents. The centre offers character-guided
tours for visitors to meet the iconic characters of
Chinatown and fully experience the rich culture
and heritage charm of Singapore’s Chinatown.

Established in 1995, the Chinese Heritage Centre
is an autonomous research institute of the
Nanyang Technological University and functions
as a research centre, a library and a museum.
The centre houses two permanent exhibitions:
the "Chinese More or Less" exhibition which
explores the theme of "Chinese-ness" and
Chinese identity as well as the "Nantah Pictorial"
exhibition which features more than 120 archival
photographs of Nanyang University, the only
Chinese-medium institution of higher learning
outside of China in the 1950s.

The Eurasian Heritage Centre was established
in 2003 to provide a better understanding and
appreciation of the history and heritage of
Singapore’s Eurasian community, which has been
around since the 1800s when the founder of
modern Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles, invited
Eurasians of Malacca and Penang to work in the
Singapore British Administration.
The centre’s three galleries showcase artefacts
such as personal belongings and household items
belonging to the Eurasian community which
emulate the traditions, lifestyle and culture of
Eurasians in Singapore, including prominent
Eurasian individuals who have contributed to
Singapore’s nation-building efforts.

With more than 17 years of history, the Fuk Tak
Chi Museum is Singapore’s first street museum
which features Chinese history and culture, and
showcases artefacts depicting the lives of early
Chinese migrants in Singapore.
Originally built in 1824 by the Hakka community,
the temple in which the museum is housed is
Singapore’s oldest temple dedicated to the deity
Tua Pek Kong. The temple was restored and
converted into a museum by craftsmen from
China and Malaysia, and features more than 200
artefacts contributed by residents in Chinatown.

Housed in an 80-year-old clan association
building, the Gan Heritage Centre seeks to
honour and preserve the rich 2,500 year heritage
of the Gan clan, celebrate the historic and cultural
significance of the Gan ancestry, and uphold the
clanship spirit while promoting its relevance in a
modern, changing world.
With a comprehensive clan archive, the
centre presents the story of the clan from the
etymological origins of the Gan surname to the
contribution of Gan businessmen in shaping
Singapore. It also serves as a living museum
that encourages interaction with the younger
audience in search of their ancestral roots and
cultural identity.

Opened in May 2015, the Indian Heritage
Centre is the first museum in Southeast Asia
to focus on the diverse heritage of the Indian
community. The centre serves as a focal point for
the community by showcasing the diverse stories
of the various groups and their rich links with the
global Indian diaspora.
The centre is also one of the first few museums
locally to adopt augmented reality in its
permanent galleries. It features more than 440
artefacts comprising jewellery, stone sculptures,
costumes, wood carvings, vintage suitcases used
by early immigrants and war-time publications
from the 1940s.

Established in 2005, the Malay Heritage Centre
showcases the history, culture and contributions
of the Malay community within the context of
Singapore’s historical and multicultural society.
The centre houses the Istana Kampong Gelam,
which was gazetted as a National Monument

With the galleries revamped on 1 September
2012, the centre’s permanent galleries now
highlight the history of Kampong Gelam

The Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, which
was gazetted as a National Monument in 1994,
traces Dr. Sun’s revolutionary activities in
Southeast Asia and highlights the impact of the
1911 Chinese Revolution on Singapore as well as
Singapore’s contributions to the revolution.
The revamped memorial hall was re-opened to
the public on 9 October 2011 and features a new
storyline and new galleries which introduce the
key Chinese community leaders who supported
Dr. Sun’s revolution in the early 20th century,

A former underground command centre in
Fort Canning Hill, the Battlebox was built in the
late 1930s and was part of the Malaya Command
Headquarters during the Battle for Singapore.
It was also the site where Lieutenant-General
Arthur Percival made the fateful decision to
surrender Singapore to the Japanese on 15
February 1942.
When the museum re-opens in February 2016,
it will dispel the myths and unveil the true causes
of defeat surrounding the largest capitulation
in British military history. Visitors can discover
how the 1942 underground command centre
functioned as a bunker replete with features such
as signals and air defence rooms.

Fort Siloso is the sole surviving preserved
coastal fort in Singapore built on Sentosa
Island in the 1880s as part of a ring of British
fortresses guarding the Singapore harbour. It
houses a museum where visitors can learn about
World War II in Singapore and Fort Siloso’s

With a collection of war memorabilia and coastal

The Old Ford Factory is the site where the British
surrendered to the Japanese on 15 February
1942. The Memories at Old Ford Factory retells
the hardships faced by those who lived through
the Japanese Occupation from 1942–1945.
The historical site houses a permanent exhibition,
“Syonan Years: Singapore Under Japanese Rule
1942-1945”, which traces the events leading to,

The National Healthcare Group Polyclinics’
(NHGP) Gallery of Memories was set up in
2002 and is Singapore’s first primary healthcare
museum that showcases and promotes the

of Singapore’s first privately funded hospital and

The Woodbridge Museum was established in
1993 to promote better understanding of the
scientific limitations and conditions faced in
caring for mentally ill patients in the past. The
museum depicts the history of the former Insane
Hospital in 1841 to the present Institute of
Mental Health with its 2,000-bed facility.
Featuring a three-dimensional model of the
old Woodbridge Hospital, post-mortem

Notes Museum is Singapore’s first and only
museum dedicated to currency and showcases
the evolution of Singapore’s currency from preindependence to post-independence.
