The beginning of something
SPECTACULAR………
XLAB’s heritage began in aerospace, the birthplace of
aerodynamics with founder Craig Turner. The physics of
aerodynamics and high strength aerospace materials were
incorporated in the design and technology of aircraft, and
tested in the wind tunnel, resulting in radical new designs.
The innovation seed was planted. The Triathlon experience
began when the innovative passion turned toward cycling,
and the first ever Triathlon mail order store was opened.
Ultimately, over 10,000 triathlon bikes were sold over a 15 year period. Craig Turner had time to think about
hydration needs and solutions when he rode coast to coast, over 3,300 miles with 91,000 feet of climbing.
HISTORY &
Still wanting to satisfy the innovative passion for
aerodynamic bicycle accessories, XLAB was formed in
1993. Craig also began writing the “Cutting Edge” column
in Triathlete magazine, and for six years, was an important
contribution to the ever growing sport of Triathlon.
XLAB PROGRESSION…….
New designs were born, resulting in many firsts for the
Industry. A radical one-piece aerobar hit the scene,
now firmly regarded as the go-to design for the Industry.
Always forward thinking, XLAB started to focus on
C.D. from Florida
aerodynamic hydration. More and more athletes started
to compete in longer races, using two standard bottle cages. XLAB introduced the first aero shaped dual,
behind the saddle carrier, the SADDLE WING - a hit, winning an ever increasing number of championships.
After extensive wind tunnel testing using the XLAB exclusive laminar Slip Stream vest, as seen in the picture,
showing the airflow around the rider, a new generation emerged - the now world famous CARBON WING and
the first ever anti-launch GORILLA cage.

TeCHnOLOgY ADVAnCeS………
Partnering with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) expert, it was confirmed that
XLAB’s positioning of hydration on the bicycle was optimal for minimum to zero drag.
Viewing the CFD results, XLAB shifted its focus to aerobar hydration and the way
the rider inserts and removes the bottle from the cage. The first production aerobar
hydration system, the tORPeDO was developed, hiding between the rider’s arms
reducing the drag to zero. The blue areas on the CFD image are ideal areas for
hydration & storage.

GORILLA - World’s First Rear Carrier Cages

Nearly all carbon cages on the market are designed for use on bicycle frames. At XLAB we decided that it was time to design cages for each location on the bicycle; Rear, Aerobar and Frame.
SPeCIfIC DeSIgnS
We optimize for each location: Grip Force to retain the bottle in the cage, the Inside Flare to ease bottle entry, the Access Angle that the bottle makes when entering the cage, and the Bottom Tab strength to hold
large bottles. The top hook is also optimized for its shape and position. Only the highest grade of Unidirectional and 3K Weave carbon fiber is used by XLAB in its carbon cages.
ReAR CAgeS
These come in two grip force strengths of 7 lbs and 14 lbs. The 7 lbs is the most popular and is suitable for good road conditions. The GORILLA Xt at 14 lbs is ideal for rougher surfaces and mountain biking.

Although the frame has typically been the storage location for water bottles, we decided to make many improvements.

The drag from a standard round bottle can be as much as 100 grams which can add nearly 2 minutes to an Ironman race. The XLAB AeRO tt
has half the drag. Although aero bottles have been available for years, they would often bounce out of the cages.
The AeRO tt has the strongest cage grip force and we added a deep groove to make it easy to remove the bottle.
SAVIng mORe TIme
Drinking around 20 ounces per hour can be time consuming. In order to reduce this time we developed the first true racing bottle. It had to be
clear to see the contents, calibrated so you could drink the correct amount every 15 minutes and have a fast flow rate. The design became the
AQUA-shOt and has become a top seller around the world. Pro-athletes Angela Naeth, Rachel Joyce, Bek Keat and others use the AQUAshOt.
SmALL fRAmeS, QUICK ACCeSS
It is often impossible to have tall bottles on small frames, so XLAB developed the sIDekICk cage. The cages allow for the bottle to be
withdrawn sideways with either the right or left hand. The bottle access speed is improved using the sIDekICk on any sized frame.

XLAB now offers cages to suit all purposes for Road, Triathlon and Mountain bikes. All cages carry matching graphics for a coordinated look. The

XLAB offers four heights of aero bags, 1.9”, 2.5”, 3.1” and 3.6”. XLAB aero bags are the most aerodynamic available today with the
