Adaptation Strategies for a Changing
Business Environment by Printing
Equipment Manufacturers
10:15 – 11:30 AM
Dennis E. Mason,
Principal,
Mason Consulting
Over the past five years,
new equipment sales
have lagged dramatically
for conventional printing
press manufacturers, and
manufacturers of in-line
and auxiliary equipment.
NPES data demonstrates digital print equipment
sales are trending upward while ‘conventional’
equipment sales are on a flat to negative trend. This
study will provide a qualitative and quantitative
analysis of changing business models for manufacturers of printing and post-press equipment
constituents for North America. It will evaluate
manufacturers’ revenue sources—total revenue, as
well as percent derived from sales vs. other new
revenue sources such as service, retrofits, rebuilds,
consulting services. Manufacturing sectors covered
will include conventional offset and digital presses,

bindery, post-press, and other pressroom equipment

sophisticated to conventional products. Before founding his consulting practice, Dennis was Vice President
of Sales and Marketing, and Vice President of Operations, for DS America, now known as Screen USA.
He also worked for many years at Rockwell Graphic
Systems, a major supplier of web and sheetfed presses

Built in 1803, this National Historic Landmark and
elegant example of Federal period architecture,
was designed for Manigault by his brother Gabriel,
who is also credited with designing Charleston’s
current City Hall. A striking spiral staircase accents
the impressive central hall which features rooms
that contain historic pieces from the Museum’s
collections, including American, English and French
furniture dating to the early 19th century.
Historic Tour: Aiken-Rhett House Museum
Cost: $10 per person
Time: Opens 10:00 AM, last tour begins at 4:15 PM
The AikenRhett House
Museum,
c. 1820,
is unique
for many
reasons, including remaining in the hands of family
descendants for 142 years! Charleston merchant
John Robinson built the house in 1820. Later, in
1827, William Aiken Sr. an Irish immigrant who later
was one of the city’s leading merchants became the
new owner. In 1833, his son, young William Aiken,
Jr. and new bride made the house their primary
residence. After extensive renovations, they created
one of the most impressive residences in Charleston.
William Aiken, Jr. was a successful businessman, rice
planter, distinguished politician, and later became
governor of South Carolina. In 1858, Governor Aiken
commissioned his cousin, Joseph Daniel Aiken, to
design and oversee construction of an art gallery, the
only one of its kind in the city. Today, many of the
exquisite objects acquired by the Aikens during their
travels throughout Europe remain on display.

it’s the perfect venue in which to gather with old
friends and new. Together, participants will explore
