Latvian Olympic
uniform
The Olympic Games are welcoming world's best athletes in London already
for the third time, still Latvian Olympians will compete in London for the first
time – in year 1908 the state of Latvia was not yet created, while in year 1948
it was no more – Latvia returned at the Olympic Games after the World War II
only in year 1992.
Latvian Olympic Team in London justly looks forward towards hopes
for good results – in 13 sports 46 Latvian athletes will take their part, half of
them making their Olympic debut in London, while a number already having
mounted the Olympic, World and European Championships podiums before.
The young and the experienced have seriously prepared for London during a
number of years, led by experienced coaches and supported by state, sports
organizations, sponsors and their fans.
Through less than a hundred years Latvian Olympians have won 20 gold, 40
silver and 20 bronze awards, while participating in the Olympic Games under
flags of different states. We are hoping to enrich this collection in London as well,
noting the fact, that the Games of the XXX Olympiad will see the participation
of already the 500th Olympian from Latvia.
I would like to wish Olympic accomplishments to everyone having earned
them and may the luck shine upon the strongest in these competitions of
world's best athletes, among whom I would like to see ours, as well. Everyone,
who participates in this struggle, who can overcome the doubts, moments of
weakness and control oneself in such a responsible moment as is the Olympic
Games, becomes a true Olympian.

History
Latvian Olympic Committee
After the Second World War, the athletes from Latvia could participate in the
Olympic Games (1952-1988) only as members of the USSR team.
During the mentioned period, athletes from Latvia, representing the USSR
team, won 19 gold, 29 silver and 14 bronze medals.
At the Games of the XVI Olympiad in Melbourne (1956) javelin thrower Inese
Jaunzeme was the first athlete from Latvia who became the Olympic Champion. Two Olympic Gold medals were won by Uljana Semjonova (basketball 1976, 1980) and Ivans Bugajenkovs (volleyball - 1964, 1968). Javelin thrower
Jānis Lūsis was successful on three occasions. He won a bronze medal in Tokyo
(1964), gold in Mexico (1968) and silver in Munich (1972 ).

The Olympic movement in Latvia set in motion at the beginning of the 20th
century, when Latvia was still a part of the Russian Empire. In 1911 the Baltic
Olympic Committee was established in Riga, yet it was under the legal jurisdiction of the Russian OC. Therefore in 1912, at the V Games of the Olympiad
in Stockholm, the Latvian athletes participated within the Russian team.
After the proclamation of independence of the Republic of Latvia in 1918,
Latvian athletes expressed their intent in the summer of 1920 to participate
in the Olympic Games in Antwerp. The request was refused, as at that time no
Olympic Committee existed in Latvia.
On the opening day of the Games of the XXIV Olympiad in Seoul, September
17, 1988, an appeal to renew the Latvian Olympic Committee was published
in the national
newspapers. On November 19, 1988, the activities of the renewed Latvian
Olympic Committee were officially agreed upon at a meeting of 483 delegates, having arrived from all over Latvia. To foster democracy in sport and
to guarantee participation of the athletes from Latvia in all international and
Olympic competitions
undeir their own
national flag, was
declared as the main
aim of the LOC.
Initiator of the LOC revival campaign, World
Champion in canoe,
Vilnis Baltins, was
elected the LOC President. In August 1991,
the Republic of Latvia

its meeting in Berlin took a decision to
re-establish the rights of Latvia in the Olympic Movement.
On April 23, 1922 the Latvian Olympic
Committee (LOC) was established.
Janis Dikmanis, an active sports
official of the time, was elected the
first President of the LOC. In 1923
the LOC received a notification from
the IOC that Latvia was accepted as
a candidate state of the IOC and was
invited to participate in the Games of
the VIII Olympiad in Paris in 1924, as
well as in the first Winter sport week
in Chamonix, later being renamed as
First Olympic Winter Games.
Latvia’s debut in the Olympics took
place in Chamonix in 1924. Latvia
was one of 16 nations which participated in the first Olympic Winter

Games. Its debut in the Games of the
Chamonix 1924
Olympiad took place in Paris in 1924.
Two years later, Janis Dikmanis, the first President of the Latvian Olympic
Committee, was elected as the IOC member.
Between 1924 to 1936, Latvian athletes participated in all Olympic Games,
except for the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid in 1932, and earned three
Olympic medals.
In 1940 the LOC activities were interrupted by the occupation of Latvia and its
illegal incorporation into the USSR.

On February 8, 1992, fifty-six years later, at the XVI Olympic Winter Games in
Albertville, Latvia again had its own delegation. LATVIA HAD RETURNED!
Since the LOK re-establishment, Latvian athletes have won 17 Olympic
medals – 2 golds, 11 silvers and 4 bronzes. The first Olympic gold for the
independent Latvia has been won by the gymnast Igors Vihrovs in the Games
of the XXVII Olympiad, in Sydney 2000.
Maris Strombergs becomes the first Olympic Champion in both – BMX sport
and Olympic history – in the Beijing XXIX Olympiad 2008.
