Newsletter No. 27 – 15th September 2016
Dear Parents
As the term draws to a close teachers are usually
preparing a class term report for next week’s
newsletter so that parents can read about what has
been happening in their child’s classroom throughout
the term. This term that report, along with photos,
will be on Connect rather than in the final newsletter
of the term. Several classes have regular weekly or
even daily updates of what is happening in their
rooms on Connect so they will have a very short
message to share with you. If you haven’t accessed
Connect before, or are having difficulties with your
password, please contact your class teacher or Clare
Brook in the Deputy’s office before the end of term.
Congratulations to all the PP-6 classes who
performed to such a high standard at yesterday’s and
today’s Edu Dance concerts. The children were
fantastic - all so engaged and giving of their very best.
This made for very professional, high energy and
happy entertainment. Thank you to the staff and
parents who have been so supportive of this
excellent program. A special thank you to Mrs
Hitchcock for the wonderful job she has done in
coordinating these weekly lessons.

Centenary News
Did you Know?
1954 saw a climax to the overcrowding problem
when enrolments hit 552 and the RSL Hall (old church
hall) was hired at two pounds per week. Eight rooms,
two hat rooms and the RSL Hall were now being used.
Two new classrooms were completed at the end of
1954, for use in 1955. However, even though these
rooms were completed, the two hat rooms still had
to be used for teaching purposes.
In 1954 Miss Caldow became the first Deputy
Principal of Como School and the P&C constructed
the War Memorial (on the site where the Early
Learning Centre is now located), at a cost of 120
pounds. It was officially opened by the Governor, Sir
Charles Gairdner on Remembrance Day (November
11), 1954.
Barry Cribb (1954 – 1960) recalls“I remember our ANZAC day service used to be taken
very seriously. The children never talked during the
service like they normally would at assembly . My
Father, Cyril Cribb, was the RSL representative for the
area and he would come every year for the service.
The service was conducted down on the school oval
at the (then) new ANZAC memorial.
It is amazing inside the P&C school hall – it looks
exactly like I remember it as a kid. Nothing seems to
have changed over fifty years! We weren't allowed
to climb under the hall because of spiders.”
In December 1955, the P&C requested that one of
the sheds be enclosed so it could be used as a
classroom. The Education Department considered
this unsuitable and suggested the P&C Hall be used
instead. The P&C objected strongly to this as they did
not build the hall in order to allow the Department to
shirk its responsibilities.
In 1956, the enrolment was 626 and two hat rooms
and the enclosed shed (funded by P&C) were being
used as temporary classrooms.
Free Dress Day: Prefect Fundraiser
Our Prefects will be holding a fundraiser on Tuesday
20th September. To help celebrate our Centenary
students are asked to come dressed in clothes from a
decade they like. The cost to participate will be a
gold coin. The Prefects will also be holding a 'pick the
baby photo of a Como staff member’ competition
before school, at morning recess and lunchtime on
that day, entry is $1.00. Old style games will be
played at lunch. All monies raised will go to the Fred
Hollows Foundation.
Invitation to Parents of EAL/D Students
I am hosting an informal afternoon tea on
Wednesday 21st September at 2.00pm in the ESL

Jo Hitchcock, EAL/D teacher.

The Virtues
Cleanliness
What is Cleanliness?
Cleanliness means washing often, keeping your body
clean, and wearing clean clothes. Cleanliness in your
mind is concentrating your thoughts on things that
are good for you. You can “clean up your act” by
deciding to change when you have done something
you aren’t proud of or have made a mistake. Staying
clean also means keeping your body free of harmful
drugs.
People's Choice
The Department of Education is encouraging all
parents and students to vote now for your favourite
teacher, principal or support staff member and give
them a chance to win $1000.
As part of the 2016 WA Education Awards, they're
asking students and parents to tell them who makes
a difference in their public school.
The staff member who receives the most votes will
be awarded the People's Choice Award at the WA
Education Awards 2016 presentation event on
Monday 28th November.
All school staff who receive a vote will be
acknowledged in The West Australian on World
Teachers' Day on Friday 28th October. Vote now at
thewest.com.au/competitions. Voting closes 5.00pm
Friday 23rd September 2016.

Canteen News
Canteen Roster
We recently nominated
our longest serving
volunteers for the WA
Canteen Association
Volunteer Excellence Award. Congratulations to
Leanne Pool, who made it into WASCA's Top 10
Volunteers! Leanne, thank you for all of your
previous efforts and your ongoing support.
The Como Cookout could not operate without
volunteers. 'Thank you!' to our most recent helpers
for their wonderful support: Tess Harris, Chantelle
Ranuaro, Glenice King, Om Kenyon, Ina Buman, Ingrid
Meyer and Tracey Walker. A special thank you to
Elizabeth Della Franca and Kellie McGrath, who came
running to help at last minute on Friday!
Our last Thursday Special (Baked Chicken Tortilla &
Apple Crumble) was a great success, with rave
reviews from the children. Thank you to Steph
Sofield, June Tribbick and Shelley Phillips for
delivering another delicious, homemade special.
We eagerly welcome more volunteer support for
Term 4. If you are able to assist us for 1-2hrs, once or
twice next term - on Wednesdays, Fridays or with
Thursday specials - please get in touch!
Summer Menu:
The Canteen Committee is working on our new
menu. To ensure ongoing viability of our canteen
service, it is important that our summer menu is
popular with both parents and children. You can help
us achieve this by taking a moment to complete a
quick, 10-question online survey. All answers are
anonymous. Please afford us 2 minutes of your time
and visit the link now. Thank you in advance!

the 16th September at 1.30pm. All are welcome.
