Hammond. Ms. Hammond will
hold a rare exhibition of the photos
she took on rue De la Gauchetière
that pivotal night in July 1990. The
images were taken as she was
being beaten and defending her

open-air exhibition will be presented for free until the 16th and
will pay tribute to this dark page in
our history. People who were at the
Sex Garage party or any of the
demonstrations afterwards, will be
attending the commemoration followed by the raising of the Rainbow Flag at 5:30 pm.
Fierté Montréal was established in 2007 after the city's prior
Pride festival, Divers/Cité, reinvented itself as an arts and music
festival. Founded in 1993 and now
defunct, Divers/Cité was credited
with putting Montreal on the international gay map, fueling a boom
in local gay tourism and contributing to both the development of the
gay village and the local gay community. Its Pride parade and postparade festival emerged in the
aftermath of the 1990 Sex Garage
police raid.
On Saturday the festival will
also host the annual Montreal Gay
Pride Community Day. The event
will take place from 11:00 am until
5:00 pm along Ste-Catherine St. E. The Gay Pride Parade will take place along Rene-Lévesque
in the Gay Village and will feature
presentations by dozens of community groups and parties, from a Pride Run in the morning to the
organizations. There's also a full slate of events and BlackKnight Party in the evening.

An exciting addition to the events will be the

Women and men from around the world who have

The raising of the Rainbow Flag, symbol of
the LGBT movement worldwide, is always an emotional moment during Pride. The ceremony on the
12th marks the official opening of the main site and
kicks off the program of free shows at Place Émilie-Gamelin. Gilbert Baker who designed the first
Pride flag in 1978, chose the symbol of the rainbow
saying, “We are all of the colours. Our sexuality is
all of the colours. We are all the genders, races and
ages.” He attributed symbolic meanings to each
colour (eight originally): pink for sexuality, red for
life, orange for healing, yellow for the sun, green
for nature, turquoise for magic and art, blue for
serenity and violet for the human spirit.

All around the world this summer, the rainbow
flag will be waving in the streets as LGBT communities celebrate Pride. Today the rainbow flag is (for
many cultures) a symbol of peace, diversity and
harmony, but the flag with six stripes is specific to
the LGBT community.
Montreal is one of the most open and diverse
cities in the world - and I am proud to be a part of
it. 'Coming out of the closet' should now be a celebration, not the painful experience many have experienced in the past - and we could thank the
generations that came before us, those who literally
paved the way through blood, sweat and tears, for
making it possible.
Our society has come a long way but there is
still oppression, harassment, persecution and violence in today's world - against people who are perceived as different, but everyone is simply another
colour of the same rainbow. And as long as this misconception exists, festivals, parades and events like
Montreal Pride will remain as important as ever. So
come on out, of whatever closet you choose, and
join in the colorful celebration of love, acceptance,
respect - and have a whole lot of fun.

Some (musical) notes

Beale Street at night
M
EMPHIS, TENNESSEE – Memphis, like Nashville, is a true
music city. Although Elvis Presley
is its best known favorite son,
Memphis is the place where blues
music got its start, and where soul
music was developed and nurtured to become
one of the music genres that is largely identified
as made in America.
During a recent press tour that I took in Memphis,
I couldn’t help but be surrounded and absorbed by
the spirit and sounds of the music that had its origins in Memphis, and later spread its sounds across
the U.S. and the rest of the world. Here are some
notes – musical notes, that is – during my visit
there.

Stax Museum
of American
Soul Music in
Memphis
Sun was not the only historically-significant record
label that was based in Memphis. Throughout the 60s
and 70s, Stax Records was the home of American
soul music, and was the label for such soul legends
as Sam & Dave, the Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes,
Booker T. & the MGs and Otis Redding. Throughout
its existence, Stax Records had an incredible 167 hit
songs on the Top 100 pop charts and 243 hits on the
Top 100 R&B charts, such as the memorable “Green
Onions”, “Soul Man”, “Midnight Hour” and “Sitting
on the Dock of the Bay”.
Although the label no longer releases new recordings, the spirit and legacy of Stax Records is celebrated quite vividly at the Stax Museum of American
Soul Music (www.StaxMuseum.com). Located at the
studios’ original site on McLemore Avenue, the museum, through its vast collection of recordings,
videos and its more than 2,500 artifacts, tells the
story of soul music in general and Stax’s major role
it played towards the development of soul music in
particular.
If you are a fan of soul – and pop – music, visiting
the Stax Museum is like taking a step back in time,
as you become a personal witness to the history of
soul music, from its origins in the small churches of
the Deep South, to Stax’s famed Studio A, where the
labels’ greatest tunes were crafted for soul music fans
everywhere. There are also plenty of interactive exhibits, including a database of every song Stax
recorded where you can take a pause and listen to
your favorite Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett recordings, or relive the glory days of the TV dance show

“Soul Train” during the 70s by moving to your favorite tunes on the Soul Train Dance Floor, or take a
trip to Stax’s nerve centre with a recreation of its Studio A, where there are several artifacts that were used
in the making of the label’s many hit records, including the organ that was used by Booker Jones for
Booker T. & the MGs’ 1962 number one hit instrumental “Green Onions”. And your visit to the museum won’t be complete unless you see Isaac Hayes’
breathtaking gold plated 1972 Cadillac car (valued
at the time at around $26,000), which was awarded
to him by Stax for winning the Best Original Song
Oscar for his “Theme from Shaft” (Hayes’ Oscar is
also on display at the museum).
And through its Soulsville Foundation, Stax maintains its mission to promote and preserve the legacy,
art and culture of American soul music through education. This is being done two ways: first through the
Soulsville Charter School – which is located next

and high school aged children; and second, through
the Stax Music Academy, an after school program
that gives at-risk youth the opportunity to get a musical education, especially learning about and performing the soul music that came through the walls
of the old Stax studios on McLemore Avenue. And
the academy’s students get the chance to showcase
what they learned to the public at the Stax to the Max

Tina Turner Museum exterior at Flagg Grove School in Brownsville, Tennessee
Interior picture: Anna Mae Bullock's (Tina Turner) graduation bio for her high school yearbook
In Brownsville, just northeast
of Memphis, a small whitewashed one-room schoolhouse located behind the Delta
Heritage Centre, doubles as a
small museum that pays tribute to another of Tennessee’s
famous native musical figures.
It is the home of the Tina
Turner Museum at Flagg

was where Turner (when she
was known as Annie Mae Bullock) attended school for most
of her formative years. When
the schoolhouse was about to
be torn down in 2012 to make
way for an irrigation system,
Turner was informed about the impending demolition, and made sure that the schoolhouse was
preserved. Through the efforts of the personnel
at the Delta Heritage Center, along with Turner
and her assistant, the preservation was made
possible, and many artefacts, concert footage
and memorabilia from Turner’s collection were

3. Sicilian wines, Sicily-Italy
Historically, Sicily has been a much-overlooked
region when it comes to quality wine. However, in
the last few years, quality has improved over quantity thanks to a generation of young dynamic winemakers and change of winemaking by the
established producers. Sicilian wines include lively
fruity reds made Nerello Mascalese and Frappato.
Also bolder blends are made with Nero d’Avola and
international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
There is something for everybody in Sicily.
4- Malbec from Argentina
Malbec goes extremely well with meat-topped
pizza, strong enough to stand up to sausage and
steak. A classic Argentine pizza is made up of white
cheese, slices of ham and a hefty dose of green
olives – here too, Malbec can shine. Be wary of too
salty toppings though, as Malbec’s rich tannins can
clash with the salt and make your pizza seem bitter.
5. Blaufranckish - Austria
Don't let the name turn you off. Over the past five
or so years, Austria has been making great progress
with its red wines. Blaufranckish, an indigenous
black variety, is all about the fruit — bramble fruit,
black cherries, and plums — with sufficient but

pizza wines.
6.- Beaujolais Villages or Mâcon Rouge - France
While I could easily stay in Italy, with so many
pizza-friendly wines, I am veering west to France
and specifically to the Gamay grape. Beaujolais, the
Macon, and Anjou (Loire) are great sources of
fresh, light-to-medium-bodied, fruity Gamay wines.
Gamay wines also have a delicious earthiness
which is another plus when eating pizza.

Wine Recommendations
August 12, 2015
Volpaia Chianti-Classico 2012
$25.30 SAQ Code: 10858262
Enticing aromas of sun-dried tomato and baked fruit with a mouth-watering juiciness, smooth texture on this classic Italian red wine. Medium- to
almost full-bodied with an attractive lean style for Chianti due to the high
altitudes where the vineyards are located. Elegant with great finesse.
Lovely long and aromatic finish. 92\100
Tasca d’Almerita Cygnus 2011
$21.25 SAQ Code: 11896519
This wine is named for the beautiful swans composer Wagner saw floating
at Villa Tasca that inspired him to compose the Parsifal while staying there.
Cygnus is the Latin for “swan” (cigno in Italian) and also the name of the
swan-shaped constellation.
Cygnus brilliantly displays notes of dark fruit with graphite aromas of
Cabernet and blackberry, mocha and cherry notes of Nero d'Avola. Additionally, aging in barrique give aromas of vanilla, tobacco, black pepper,
which enhances the complexity of this wine. Overall, it is rich, generous
and complete. 93\100
Heinrich Blaufränkisch 2013
$22.25 SAQ Code: 10768478
On the nose, deep aromas of blackcurrants, with Szechwan pepper. Dry
meat with tomato leaf. In the mouth, medium to full body with a nice
structure. Nicely textured with jammy flavours. 90\100.
