Highway Inn: A Taste of Old Howaii ighway Inn was established in September 1947 by Seiichi (19141994) and Sachiko “Nancy” Toguchi (1914-1975). Three generations later, Highway Inn continues its longtime tradition of serving quality Hawaiian and American foods to its many patrons. Originally born in Hawaii in 1914, the late founder, Seiichi Toguchi, was raised in Ginoza-son, Okinawa. When he returned to Hawaii at the age of 14, Mr. Toguchi began working as a dishwasher at the old City Café, owned by the Hamamoto family. Without any formal education, but fueled with a strong desire to improve his poor economic situation, Mr. Toguchi quickly understood the value of learning how to cook. When World War II began, Mr. and Mrs. Toguchi and their three children were interned in Japanese Interment Camps in Arkansas and California. At the end of 1946, the family returned back home to Hawaii and Mr. Toguchi worked hard to regain some financial stability. He came up with the idea of opening a restaurant that stemmed from a very simple and practical view: put food on the table to feed his seven children. In historic Waipahu, when sugar cane was king, Highway Inn first opened its doors on Farrington Highway. In 1960, Highway Inn moved to the heart of Waipahu on Depot Road, just below the old Waipahu Sugar Mill, where the former Big Way Supermarket and the famous Arakawa’s Department Store were located. In 1984, under the ownership of his son, Bobby, the restaurant moved to its current location on Leoku Street. In an effort to better serve its many customers, Highway Inn Seafood Market opened in 2000. Here we serve a variety of fresh fish, assorted poke and fresh produce, and now, poke bowls. Additionally, customers are now able to enjoy the unforgettable taste of Highway Inn anywhere on the island with Ho‘okipa Catering Services. Through the aloha, goodwill and support of its many family, friends, and loyal customers, Highway Inn continues to serve “A Taste of Old Hawaii,” that Seiichi and Sachiko Toguchi envisioned over half a century ago. Highway Inn thanks you for your continued patronage. We are truly grateful to all of our customers both new and old – from those who just stumbled in to those who have come as children and who are now bringing their own grandchildren. Mahalo for your patronage. We look forward to serving you in the years to come.
