200 on Waiting List
Artists, software developers, graphic designers, photographers, healthcare
specialists – the list seems endless. They’ re all waiting for a spot - some for up to
1 1/2 years - at 401 Richmond W. What attracts them? The location to start, and
the cost which the landlord has kept well below
market rate to encourage young entrepreneurs and
artists. Others are attracted to the great café,
childcare centre and art in the halls. Still others
love the profusion of green: a rooftop garden,
courtyard, hanging plants and hothouse violets.
But most say it’s a chance to share in a caring,
community-oriented environment. All in all it seems
people are looking for a place to connect with each
other, to be creative and productive. (For a tenant
perspective see this issue’s Profile – page 3). If
you would like a tour of this remarkable building
contact Lesley Soden at (416) 595-5900 (21). You
can also email us: [email protected] or find us
on the web: www.401richmond.net.

Website Design
In February three seminars were held at Loftus Lloyd Café (Studio 135), with web-savvy Sandra Lewis outlining how to access
the free Tenant and Events Directories in the 401 website (www.401richmond.net). In fact, as Marian Wihak (Studio 276)
learned, using these directories is quite simple, thanks to straight-forward online directions. Tenant pages are easy to create,
self-formatting and can be edited whenever revisions are required. They provide room for a logo, information and news about
activities, two images, an e-mail address and a URL (website address). Site visitors are able to conduct a search of tenants
who have submitted pages by name or category. In the Events Directory,
tenants can advertise exhibitions, launches, openings and other special
events in listing or calendar format. This allows web surfers to see at a
glance what’s going on at 401 Richmond throughout the year.
Although there’s room for everyone, there are just 17 web pages currently
up and running and a wide open calendar of events! Like other building
features, such as the outdoor courtyard and the early learning centre,
401 Richmond Ltd. has underwritten the cost of this project on behalf of
all tenants, to continue to foster our unique community of small businessowners, craftspeople, service organizations and artists. We hope every
studio will take advantage of this promotional opportunity, and look
forward to seeing online a complete picture of the vital 401 “city within the
city”, as described by CBC’s Max Allen. If you would like information on
how to fashion your free web page or access the site, call Sandra Lewis at

Don’t be deceived by the everyday subject matter. Rae Johnson
Johnson’s current exhibit of black
é until April 30th, is both compelling and
cats, lying, sitting, staring, on view at Loftus Lloyd Caf
Café
complex. Renowned for her Canadian landscapes, the award-winning artist treats felines as
abstract forms, exciting the eye with a dynamic interplay of shapes and colours. Surface is
also important to Rae who uses wood grain to animate the image. Amidst the animal oeuvre,
and in complete contrast to it, is one large outdoor scene. This painting, so peaceful in
appearance, underscores the quiet inner landscape that the cats create.
From the artist’s statement: The domestic cat has been linked with human consciousness
since it was worshipped as Bastet, the Egyptian cat deity whose sexual orgies were believed
to increase vegetable, animal and human fertility. In the Middle Ages, the cat came to be
endowed with the power of the devil. It was said that some women had the power to put their
souls into black cats. The Medieval Catholic Church dissociated itself from the instincts,
sexuality and, generally speaking, from the feminine natural element, and probably had much
to do with the vilification of cats. According to Jungian feminist, Marie-Louise
von Franz, author of The Cat, “... the black cat may be seen as the shadow
side of the Virgin Mary...”
Rae Johnson is represented by Paul Petro
Petro.
David
Plowden
A Time
of Trains
May 1-31, 1999
We are honoured to have the work of one of North America’s most
revered train photographers, David Plowden
Plowden, on exhibit at Loftus Lloyd
Café throughout the month of May. In light of Plowden’s industrial age
subject matter, it seems only fitting that his artistry would find a place in
our historic building. Drop by the café and check out his powerful images.

Susan Hedley of Studio 356
Studio Bello!
“I love this building and really
wanted to be in it,” exudes
illustrator/graphic designer
Susan Hedley
Hedley. A long-time friend
of Donald Quan (Studio B106)
and Lisa Keaney (Studio 256),
Susan had watched 401 in
different stages of repair back in
1996, and was drawn to its
community atmosphere. So,
despite a craving for light she
was willing to accept a basement
space (B08) before securing a
spot on the third floor (Studio 356).
The third floor studio was also dreary: dark green ceilings
and mangled floors that couldn’t be repaired. Ever the
optimist, sunny, stylish Susan flooded the place with light,
painting everything white. She then
added a touch of home – a cattle farm
outside Kincardine – by accenting the
room with trees and cowskinupholstered furniture. “I’m a country
girl,” she beams.
Such enthusiasm and an
entrepreneurial spirit gave Susan an
edge in promoting Studio Bello!, a
highly sought-after illustration and
design company. “People always ask
me about the company name [beautiful studio]. It represents
my love of illustration and passion for Italy – a place she
visits frequently to draw. It’s really appropriate for me.”
Making the decision to start her own firm came from a deepseated desire to be hands-on. A drawing instructor at
Sheridan College, Susan left education for business after six
years because, “my passion is making
things.” Despite numerous prestigious
awards to her credit - Studio Magazine,
Applied Arts Magazine, and UCDA
(University & College Design
Association) to name a few – the evermodest Susan claims, “I’m just starting
out.”
The key to her prosperity is loyalty and
care. Susan’s clients, mostly
healthcare providers (e.g., The Hospital
for Sick Children
Children),
childcare specialists
and educators, have
stuck by her for over
eight years. Even
those who’ve changed
industries remain devotees. “My interest is in having a few good
clients and taking care of them. People tell me, ‘You make us
feel like we matter’ ”.
Beyond values, Susan’s competitive
advantage rests in a combination of
talents she brings to every job. Studio
Bello
Bello! offers a complete package of
high-end illustration and design in
addition to savvy strategic planning.
“What I’m doing is simply solving
people’s problems,” says Susan. “Often,
a client has an idea but doesn’t know
where to go with it. I give them support
– a direction and a solution.”
Born to strive, Susan also excels at and is deeply committed to
academia. She graduated top of her class at Sheridan
College, receiving the award for outstanding academic
achievement (1983), earned a BA with
distinction from the University of Toronto
(Fine Art Studio/Art History), and went
on to post-graduate work at Camberell
College of Art in London. She has also
studied at the Instituto per l’Arte e
Restauro in Florence, and is currently
working towards her Masters in
Illustration at Syracuse University.
“It’s really important to spend your life being authentic,” says
Susan. “It means that there are no guarantees, no paid sick
days, no holidays. But in the end you’ve
done work that you’re connected with.”
As for her business, Susan draws a
parallel between its growth and the
evolution taking place in her workplace.
“That’s why I love 401 Richmond.
There’s a commitment to artists and it’s
run conscientiously.
There’s kindness,
respect and hard work.
The building perfectly
suits my sensibilities.”

Catch artist Judi Frost (Studio 277) at the
20th Annual One of a Kind Spring
Canadian Craft Show and Sale at the
National Trade Centre, Exhibition Place
March 31-April 4, 1999. Located in booth
H30, Judi will be exhibiting her garden
paintings and promoting her Toronto
Island summer workshops. Judi’s art (The
Place of My Dreams) is on view at
Harbourfront’s York Quay Gallery March
14 - April 25 and at the Rectory Gallery &
Café on Toronto Island April 7- May 3,
1999. Judi was also responsible for
organizing the first Terry Fox run on
Toronto Island, an event that drew
hundreds, including Fox’s brother, Daryl,
and raised $14,000. She took on the
fundraiser in honour of her friend, also
named Terry, and will back at it next year
(Sunday, September 29). Well done Judi!
Gwendolyne Hats (Studio 433)
participated in the Royal Ontario
Museum’s Textile and Costume
fundraiser Mad About Hats in
March. The event helped raise
awareness of ROM’s plan to
establish a costume collection by
2001. Gwendolyne Hats contributed one of their stunning hats to the
Silent Auction and exhibited their latest styles at the millinery boutique.
Composer, performer and multiinstrumentalist Donald Quan of
Q Music (Studio B106) is globe-trotting
again. Barely back from a successful
two-week tour of Taiwan, where he
performed for Taipei and I-lan City
government officials, Donald then
headed off to Peter
Gabriel’s studio in London
to produce flautist Ron
Korb’s latest record.
Liz Rykert of Meta Strategies
(Studio 206) spoke on Citizens
for Local Democracy at the
McLuhan Centre recently. Liz’s
talk was part of the Design
Visionary Speakers series.
Star-alert. Costumer Susan Dicks (Studio 360)
recently outfitted Mia Farrow in town for a movie-ofthe-week, Forget Me Never, and created shirts for
Denzel Washington in feature film Hurricane. Susan
was also commissioned to produce 120 stretch
pieces (10 ft each) for a Mazda display in Montreal.
The roof of the Olympic Stadium collapsed under
the weight of snow on the show and the order had to
be placed again. Good for Susan. Bad for Mazda.

If you’re in the Ottawa region stop by the
Almonte’s Mississippi Valley Textile Museum
to see a show of ‘wearable art’ by Kristen
Fahrig (Studio 394). Entitled What on
Earth! A Creation Myth for the Millenium,
the exhibit “challenges us to question how
we partake in the simple daily ritual of
dressing and undressing.” Fahrig’s work is
on view between May 27 and September
26, 1999.

Abstract artist John
Brown (Studio 260) received a
great review by Gary Michael
Dault in The Globe & Mail recently
(March 13, 1999). Of his show 10
Attempts to Imagine the Inside of My
Body at the Olga Korper Gallery, Dault said,
“Clearly, John Brown paints a very special painting.”
YouthCulture Inc.
(Studio 245) was
cited in
Maclean’s for
their expertise
on the Y [outh]
generation (How
Teens Got the Power,
March 22, 1999). The trend-tracking
company oversees publication of Watch
Watch,
a magazine aimed at 14-18 year olds, distributed
to high schools across Canada. They also produce
a hot new quarterly called Bang targeted to tweens
(9-12 year olds). You can pick up a copy of either
publication at their office on the second floor.
What better exposure
do you need? Adam
Shaheen of Cuppa
Coffee Animation
(Studio 104) scored a
lengthy article in The
National Post (March
17, 1999) including
front page of the
‘Financial Post’ section.
From it we learned that
Adam’s company was
responsible for the
opening titles of David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ,
recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival.
Congratulations Adam!
Paul Alexander
Esmeralda Enrique (Studio B104)
performed at the Juno Awards
(Copps Coliseum, Hamilton) on
March 7, 1999. The celebrated
flamenco artist danced to the
sounds of Jesse Cook & Natalie
McMaster who were nominated
for best instrumental album.
Esmeralda will also be
performing at the Tarragon
Spring Arts Fair May 28-29, 1999.
How does she do it? Fashion
designer Pam Chorley (Studio
257) is in the news once again,
taking front page of The Toronto
Star’s ‘at Home’ section
(February 28, 1999). Chorley’s
fabulous Victorian-style home
was featured as part of the
recent trend towards period
architecture and furnishings.
Speaking Out
The 3rd Annual Speakers’ Spotlight
Showcase took place on February
18, 1999 to a packed house at the
Design Exchange. The featured
speakers, including 401 tenants
d~Code (Studio 251), wowed the
crowd with their provocative
insights, intriguing thoughts and
inspiring stories. Speakers’
Spotlight (Studio 235) is thrilled to
have raised over $4,000 in support
of the Children’s Wish Foundation
of Canada.
Arts Toronto (Studio 365), a non-profit organization
responsible for ArtsWeek and the Toronto Arts Awards, is in
the midst of a comprehensive strategic planning process
that will result in an updated mandate, strengthened
programs and the likely addition of new services for the
cultural sector. Call for submissions for participation in
Artsweek will be early this year (May 7). Also, watch for new
Artsweek banners all over the city next Fall.
