CARVIN ENGINEERING DATA U7000/U7500 Wireless System INTRODUCTIONS Congratulations on your purchase of the U7000 and U7500 Professional Wireless System. These systems include a receiver and either a Lavaliere mic, a handheld mic with transmitter, a headworn mic, or a body-pack transmitter for guitar,. The receiver features true UHF diversity reception. Two antennas feed two completely independent RF sections on the same frequency. Automatic logic circuitry continuously compares and selects the superior received signal providing better sound quality and reducing the possibility of interference and dropouts. Both receivers are made to be mounted in a standard 19” rack (1U). The versatile body-pack transmitter is designed for use with condenser microphones as well as Hi-Z instrument pickups. Both the handheld and body-pack transmitters use internal antennae. Please note that in multiple-system applications there must be a transmitter-receiver combination on a separate frequency for each input desired (one transmitter per receiver). U7000 GETTING STARTED QUICKLY If you’re like most new owners, you’re probably in a hurry to plug your wireless system in and use it. Here are some brief instructions to get you going quickly. With the wireless system unplugged and the unit turned off, complete the following procedures: 1. ANTENNAS Assemble the two antennas to the BNC connectors. For the U7000 the BNC connectors are located on the front. For the U7500, the BNC connectors are located on the rear. For rackmount installation of the U7500, the extension cables provided bring the antenna inputs to the front of the receiver for mounting. 2. FREQUENCY CHECK Check the frequency of the system against the chart on the back page to ensure you have the proper frequency for your area. The frequency is marked on the back panel or bottom of the receiver. 3. OUTPUT CONNECTIONS There are two audio outputs on the back of the receiver: balanced XLR and unbalanced 1/4”. Connect the appropriate cables for your system. 4. POWER CONNECTIONS Connect the included AC adapter to the DC power input on the back of the receiver. Then plug the adapter into a standard 120 volt 60 Hz AC power outlet. 5. RECEIVER POWER ON Turn down the Level control of the receiver as well as the mixer. Switch on the receiver only. Do not switch on the transmitter yet. The power indicator will light up even though the transmitter is not on. With U7000 one of the diversity indicator LEDs (A or B) will also light up. 6. TRANSMITTER SETTINGS Slide the battery cover off of the transmitter and adjust the input switch to the appropriate setting; 1=Instrument, 2=headmic, 3=lav mic. 7. BATTERY SELECTION Insert a fresh 9-volt alkaline battery, observing the correct polarity. Reinstall the battery cover. 8. TRANSMITTER POWER ON The transmitter has a 3-position power switch; “Off”, U7500 REGULATIONS AND SERVICING This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Increase the level until the AF level indicator peaks. This indicates that maximum transmitter modulation without significant distortion has been reached. 10. SQUELCH To eliminate unwanted background RF noise adjust the squelch control. Hopefully, this will help get you started. Have fun with your new U7000/U7500 wireless system. RECEIVING INSPECTION—read before getting started INSPECT YOUR WIRELESS SYSTEM FOR ANY DAMAGE which may have occurred during shipping. If any damage is found, please notify the shipping company and CARVIN immediately. SAVE THE CARTON & ALL PACKING MATERIALS. In the event you have to re-ship your unit, always use the original carton and packing material. This will provide the best possible protection during shipment. CARVIN and the shipping company are not liable for any damage caused by improper packing. SAVE YOUR INVOICE. It will be required for warranty service if needed in the future. SHIPMENT SHORTAGE. If you find items missing, they may have been shipped separately. Please allow several days for the rest of your order to arrive before inquiring. POWER SWITCH Depress to power the receiver. The RED led indicates power to the unit. 10. ANTENNA JACK “A” Antenna connector for receiver ”A.” Attach the antenna directly or extend it with an antenna cable for front mounting. 2. LEVEL CONTROL Adjusts the audio level to your amp or mixer. If distortion occurs, reduce the level. 11. ANTENNA JACK “B” Antenna connector for receiver “B.” Attach the antenna directly or extend it with an antenna cable for front mounting. 3. SQUELCH CONTROL The squelch control is preset at the factory, but can be adjusted if you must use the system in an area with considerable RF interference. If there is audio output from the receiver when your transmitter is off, adjust the squelch control so the system will receive the signal from your transmitter but “squelch” or eliminate the unwanted background RF noise. This adjustment can cause a reduction in useable range of the wireless transmitter, so set the control to the lowest position that reliably mutes the unwanted RF signals. 12. DC POWER INPUT Use AC power adapter, which supplies 12V DC. 4. ACTIVE DIVERSITY CHANNEL LED (On U7000 UHF Receiver only) The A and B LED indicate which antenna signal is being used. This diversity receiver will automatically choose the stronger of the two. 5. AF LEVEL LED The AF level is displayed by an LED meter, which indicates the strength of the audio signal received. 6. RF LEVEL LED The RF level is displayed by an LED meter, which allows you to estimate the RF power with which a transmitted signal is received. If less than 2 LED, reception will become noisy. 13. OUTPUT LEVEL If the signal going to your amp or mixer is too loud or distorted, set the output level to Low. If you lack volume, set the switch to High. 14. FUSE Turn the unit OFF and unplug the power supply before checking or replacing the fuse. Use a philip screwdriver to remove the fuse holder. Replace the fuse with the same rated fuse. 15. UNBALANCED AUDIO OUTPUT JACK 1/4” phone jack. Can be connected to an unbalanced input of a mixer or tape recorder. 16. BALANCED AUDIO OUTPUT JACK XLR-type connector. A standard 2-conductor shielded cable can be used to connect the receiver output to a balanced input on a mixer. 17. FREQUENCY CODE The transistor and receiver must have the same frequency number. MOUNTING ADAPTERS For mounting the receiver in any standard 19” rack, attach adapters to receiver with screws supplied. 2. Position the receiver so that it has the fewest possible obstruction between it and the normal location of the transmitter. Line-of-sight is best. 3. The transmitter and receiver should be as close together as conveniently possible. 4. The receiver antenna should be in the open and away from any metal or cement walls. If in a rack, have the unit on top or angle antennas outward away from the metal rack. 5. A receiver cannot receive signals from two transmitters at the same time. 6. Each transmitter/receiver system operates on a factory-aligned, crystal co trolled frequency. Look on the back of the receiver to obtain the channel number. This number must match the transmitter if you purchase a replacement transmitter. 7. Turn the transmitter off when not in use. Remove the battery if the transmitter is not used for a period of time. Slide off the battery cover as shown in Figure A. 2. Carefully insert a fresh 9-volt alkaline battery, observing correct polarity as marked inside the battery compartment. The transmitter housing is designed to prevent incorrect installation of the battery. Do not force the battery in. 3. Replace the battery cover. BATTERY CONDITION INDICATOR The RED battery condition indicator (Fig. B 1) should light strongly with a fresh battery. As the battery weakens, the indicator will grow dimmer. When the indicator becomes very dim or goes out, there is little life left in the battery. Replace it at once for continued operation of the transmitter. TRANSMITTER ON SWITCH The transmitter has a 3-position power switch: “OFF,” center–in between ON-OFF aka “Standby” and “ON” as shown in Fig. B 2. When the switch is set to “On,” the transmitter produces both RF and audio. With the switch set to “Standby,” the transmitter sends only RF to the receiver, which prevents an on or off “pop” into the audio. When turning on the mic the led indicator will flash only for the time of switching on. If the led indicator remains lighted it means that the battery has low power and needs to be changed. INPUT CONNECTOR 1/8” input jack for Lavaliere mic, head mic, or instrument input. ADJUSTING INPUT SWITCH The transmitter has a three position sensitivity input switch (fig. A 1). The three settings are as labeled; 1 (low) instrument, 2 (mid) headmic, 3 (high) lav mic. Set the switch to appropriate setting. If set to high for the wrong mic, distortion or low volume will result BELT CLIP (Fig. D 1) Clip this to a belt, guitar strap or clothing. The clip is removable if not needed. While holding the upper part of the transmitter body, unscrew the lower body cover and slide off (Figure G). 2. Insert a fresh 9V battery. Be certain to observe correct polarity as marked inside the battery compartment. The transmitter housing is designed to prevent incorrect installation of the battery. Do not force the battery in. 3. Replace the lower body cover. Do not over tighten. TRANSMITTER ON SWITCH The transmitter has a 3-position power switch: “OFF,” center–inbetween ON-OFF aka “Standby” and “ON” shown in Fig. H 1. When the switch is set to “On,” the transmitter produces both RF and audio. With the switch set to “Standby,” the transmitter sends only RF to the receiver; the audio source is turned off. After operation the microphone must be switched off. When turning on the mic the led indicator will flash only for the time of switching on. If the led indicator remains lighted it means that the battery has low power and needs to be changed. This symbol is intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated “dangerous voltage” within the product’s enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock to persons. CAUTION RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK DO NOT OPEN This symbol is intended to alert the user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the literature accompanying the appliance. IMPORTANT! FOR YOUR PROTECTION, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING: WATER AND MOISTURE: Appliance should not be used near water (near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, etc). Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the enclosure through openings. GROUNDING OR POLARIZATION: Precautions should be taken so that the grounding or polarization means of an appliance is not defeated. POWER CORD PROTECTION: Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the appliance. SERVICING: The user should not attempt to service the appliance beyond that described in the operating instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. If your unit is equipped with a fuse receptacle, replace only with the same type fuse. Refer to replacement text on the unit for correct fuse type. HELP SECTION RF Interference If you encounter receiving interference (from other than an operating TV station), often it can be eliminated by adjusting the receiver’s squelch control, as described in this manual. Please note that wireless frequencies are shared with other audio services. According to Federal Communications Commission regulations, “Wireless microphone operations are unprotected from interference from other licensed operations within the band.
