RAIDER NEWS A Message from the Principal
WARWICK HIGH SCHOOL RAIDER NEWS Issue 2 Warwick High School RAIDER NEWS “WHERE EVERY STUDENT COUNTS” IN THIS ISSUE A Message from the Principal Second semester has begun. It’s a new year, new semester, new commitments. Each semester brings with it a different set of responsibilities that lead us to our intended goal. You will find that all the educators and students at Warwick continue to work toward their goals of excellence which comes from continued high expectations and a persistent message that all students will be 3 engaged: (E ) Education x Engagement = Excellence. We are still very excited. Writing and engagement continues to be the focus for this school year. We write in every class since research shows that a narrow lens on writing leads to increased academic performance in all areas. Our elective classes all participate in our preparatory measures toward improving SOL scores. One day per week, all elective classes work on an SOL concept. Our core classes are not accepting mediocrity. We are pushing students in our efforts to help them realize that they can do so much more than they believe. The English department is highlighting Performance Assessments. The math department is stressing algebraic and geometrical concepts. The social sciences department is accenting the importance of analyzing and exploring geographical, regional, cultural, and political perspectives. The science department is spotlighting student independence in labs. It is indeed an exciting time to be a part of the teaching and learning atmosphere. Our exuberance extends in and beyond classroom hours. While we work with students during classroom hours in large groups, small groups, and individual conferences, we also employ a few other improvement strategies and best practices that we know work. We teach to our strengths; we have Flex Fridays; we have Saturday School; we have lunch tutorials; we have after-school tutoring; and University tutors, to name a few. Both students and educators are working hard, being challenged, and ever seeking to do more. Our added focus of engagement this year reminds us each day of the immense importance of partnerships. Families, we need your help. We see where you have helped by stressing the academics. Ready, Set, Test!!! Students have been preparing all year for important assessments, including SOLs and industry certification exams. Find important upcoming test dates inside. Page 2 Page 3 Class of 2012 Graduation is quickly approaching. In this issue, you’ll find important information about this year’s celebration. WARWICK HIGH SCHOOL RAIDER NEWS | Issue 2 2 Students are taking more pride in their work. We have seen the improvement in behavior. Overall, students display a positive attitude. Our new attendance staff members, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Starks, need your help in the area of attendance. Help us by making sure your child is in school every day, on time. You know the value that careers and higher academia place on attendance. Students miss valuable instructional experiences when they are absent or late. We are working to remove obstacles. You are better and more equipped than we are to assist us in this area. We thank you in advance as we all strive to help students accomplish their goals. Gerald, join forces with Mr. Perkins to encourage students to remain focused so they can graduate on time. We stress the virtues of good citizenship each month, and we recognize students who have exhibited exemplary character traits. We are committed to students and their futures. Encourage students to join an athletic team or club or to participate in school activities. And, remember to attend athletic events and other school performances. Families, there is an open invitation to visit your child’s/children’s classes. Again, come observe, learn, and lend your expertise to the mission of Warwick High. As we work to develop the whole child, we continue to infuse Career Pathways in the fabric of the school. Our new College and Career specialist, Ms. Dennis, is there to guide students towards scholarships and college and career choices. We need everyone to remind students to visit the College and Career Center.
