Board a small, comfortable boat for a two-hour voyage up the Mekong River. Pak Ou Caves: continue upriver to visit the Pak Ou Caves, famed for housing more than 10,000 statues of the Buddha in a huge cavern overlooking the Mekong River. Because an image of the Buddha cannot be destroyed, for hundreds of years Laos’ damaged Buddhas have been retired to these caves. The lower cave holds the vast majority, but you will also get the chance to see the upper cave, the starting point for the one-hour trek to a local village. Before leaving the caves it is customary to make an offering and the locals who protect and maintain the site greatly appreciate any donation. The museum displays and sells a number of local handicrafts, and the centre is also involved in the research, preservation and documentation of cultural artefacts, as well as outreach and education projects, and employment development. The museum director will show you around and discuss the centre’s activities with you in further depth. Return to the hotel in the evening for dinner at Amantaka. SUGGESTED INDEPENDENT EVENING EXPERIENCE Hmong Night Market: if you wish to step out this evening on your own, take a postprandial stroll through the colourful stalls of Hmong Night Market, where local hill-tribe people sell their vibrant textiles and other handmade creations every evening. Open until 21.00. 12 DAY SIX Saturday, 11 March 2017 Included Meals: B L D SUGGESTED EXPERIENCE Alms Giving: if you wish, rise at 5am to experience the centuries-old tradition of giving alms to the monks, also known as tak bat. At sunrise, your guide will escort you to a spot on a nearby street where you can greet a procession of monks as they make their way to homes and shops to receive their daily rice, an event of great significance for the Lao people. For an even more intimate encounter, watch the smaller file of monks who proceed along the street outside Amantaka. Return to Amantaka to relax and enjoy breakfast before your 9.30am private transfer to airport (approximately 15 minutes). Important note: please bring two passport-sized photographs per person for your Cambodia visa. Enjoy lunch at Amansara, on your own. Spend the afternoon at leisure. Old Town: If you wish to independently explore around town, take a complimentary ride on one of Amansara’s remorks (tuk-tuk). Entering this way, you will avoid most other tourists initially and your first impressions of the monuments’ grandeur at daybreak will be relatively private. Angkor Wat has become one of the world’s most famous attractions, on a par with the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal. Built in the 12th century as the capital of King Suryavarman II’s kingdom, it is the largest and best-preserved of the Angkor temples, and the only one to have remained a significant religious centre (first Hindu, then Buddhist) since its founding. Breakfast: return to Amansara for a full breakfast and relaxation time. TODAY’S SCHEDULED EXPERIENCE You will be split into two groups for a special scheduled lunch each day. The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore Siem Reap. 1pm - Helicopter to Lunch at a Temple: experience Siem Reap from a private helicopter, whose flight path includes views of a temple complex that was once the centre of a large city, a sandstone pyramid and moat now subsumed by the jungle, and mountainous ruins. Land at Beng Mealea, and dine al fresco on Khmer specialities. The return flight takes you over Chao Srei Vibol temple, the Roulos group of temples, and Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s ‘Great Lake’. This huge body of water stretching across the northwest section of the country is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. During the wet season, the water inflow expands the surface area of the lake more than fivefold, inundating the surrounding forested flood plain. Markets, schools, churches, flower gardens, vegetable farms and even police stations literally float on its surface. 16 TODAY’S SUGGESTED EXPERIENCES Visit temples and other sites around Siem Reap as you wish with your private guide, meet up with your group for the helicopter ride and lunch. Ta Prohm Temple: the ruins at Ta Prohm date from 1186 and have been allowed to be reclaimed by the jungle. This atmospheric temple complex is a must-see on any visit to Siem Reap and offers amazing photo opportunities, as well as the chance to view the latest archeological discoveries made here, such as 2011’s two headless stone statues, which date from the 12th century and are the biggest excavated finds since the 1930s. Angkor Thom: in the 12th century Angkor Thom was an immense city and the capital of the Mahayan Buddhist king Jayavarman VII’s empire. The Bayon, the central temple of Angkor Thom, is a marvel of ‘baroque’ Khmer architecture, constructed between the late 12th and early 13th centuries as the official state temple of Jayavarman VII. The Bayon mixes both Hindu and Buddhist iconography and its several terraces contain 54 towers with façades of stone faces. Angkor National Museum: opened in 2007 and located a few minutes from Amansara, this engaging museum houses various Hindu and Buddhist statues and artefacts from the Angkor temples and surrounding area, scale models of different temple complexes, and exhibits. Khmer Angkor Workshop: meet local apprentices at this centre, which trains young disadvantaged people from the provinces in the techniques of carving sandstone and wood, as well as the production and use of some of the world’s most collectable silk. Return to Amansara around 5pm to freshen up before dinner. Meet in the lobby for departure at 6pm (45 minute transfer). 7pm – Private Temple Dinner: enjoy a private dinner of gourmet Khmer cuisine on the grounds of Banteay Samre. Drinks and canapés will precede your multi-course meal, and the evening will include a performance of traditional Cambodian dance. DAY EIGHT 17 Monday, 13 March 2017 Amansara, Suite (Siem Reap, Cambodia) Included Meals: B L D Breakfast at Amansara. TODAY’S SCHEDULED EXPERIENCE You will be split into two groups for a special scheduled lunch each day. The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore Siem Reap. 1pm - Conservatoire of Aspara Dance & Lunch: visit Ravynn Karet Coxen’s traditional Khmer dance school, Conservatoire of Aspara Dance, founded under the patronage of HRH Princess Buppha Devi. Ravynn began her programme as part of a humanitarian effort to deliver the essentials to the rural areas of Cambodia, including vaccinations, clean water, and education. Enjoy a traditional dance put on by the children of the school and receive a special lotus blessing. Afterwards, enjoy a gourmet champagne lunch. You will have an opportunity to speak with the children about their lives, and about what this sacred dance means to them. TODAY’S SUGGESTED EXPERIENCES Visit Banteay Srei and surrounding sites with your private guide, meet up with your group for lunch at the Conservatoire. Banteay Srei: about 45 minutes from Amansara (and next to the Conservatoire), Banteay Srei is a small gem of a temple built in the 10th century and nicknamed the ‘Citadel of Women’. A jewel-box of red sandstone, it is famed for its intimate size and the intricacy of its carvings. Landmine Museum: nearby is the Cambodia Landmine Museum, founded in 1997 by Aki Ra, a former conscripted child soldier of the Khmer Rouge who has dedicated his adult life to de-mining the Cambodian countryside and providing education and support services for landmine-affected children. Explore the museum’s fascinating garden of deactivated mines for a glimpse at how the devastating devices were hidden. 18 Old Market: Go to the Psar Chaa (Old Market), a unique and intriguing bazaar where one can hunt for wood and stone carvings, silk, Buddha images, and other hand-made Cambodian souvenirs in this wonderful vending labyrinth. The gracious Khmer merchants will help you find what you want, even if it means they go to a competitor. Prices are reasonable, but bargaining is still expected. Dinner at Amansara, on your own (included). Alternatively, try authentic Khmer cuisine at a local restaurant (not included). DAY NINE Tuesday, 14 March 2017 Included Meals: B L D Enjoy breakfast before your 9am private transfer to the airport (approximately 15 minutes). Fly by private jet to Manila, Philippines at 09.45am and arrive at 1.30pm. Lunch aboard your private jet. Upon arrival in Manila, transfer to an Amanpulo plane for the 2.30pm flight from Manila to Palawan (1 hour). 19 PHILIPPINES Set on its own private island in the Sulu Sea, Amanpulo is the quintessential tropical paradise. On arrival at this whisper-quiet retreat guests are greeted by cerulean skies and turquoise waters. Amanpulo offers an abundance of aquatic activities, including sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing, as well as beautiful stretches of deserted beach. On land, tennis courts and bicycles are complemented by nature walks, which take in the lush indigenous plants and myriad wildlife. 20 DAY NINE Tuesday, 14 March 2017 Amanpulo, Beach Casita (Palawan, Philippines) Included Meals: B L D Arrive at Amanpulo, Palawan, Philippines at 3.30pm. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Spa: enjoy a complimentary 60-minute afternoon massage at the Amanpulo’s Aman Spa, set in a series of wooden pavilions with views of the Sulu Sea (valid once per person any time during stay). AVAILABLE RESORT EXPERIENCES Additional costs may apply Sailing: Amanpulo keeps a variety of boats for islandhopping, fishing and sailing. The resort fleet includes a twin-hulled Hobie Sports 17, as well as smaller catamarans and two Lasers. Sailing lessons are also available. Windsurfing: the island’s sand-bottomed blue lagoon, located on the windward side, makes for world-class board sailing from December to April. During this period, the northeast trade winds blow, on average, at about 20 knots. Fishing: catch snapper and grouper at one of the resort’s favoured fishing spots or trawl for wahoo, tuna and mackerel. The resort’s seven-metre (25-foot) centre-console game boat is equipped with a four-line spread for game fishing. Snorkelling: paddle out to the reef in a Hobie ocean kayak, tie up at one of several buoys and take to the water from there. The reef facing the Beach Club is a popular stop. Hawksbill and green sea turtles, parrot fish, rays and a wide array of coral fish live in these waters. Snorkellers can also wade in from the beach. 21 Scuba Diving: the Dive Centre offers PADI courses ranging from introductory to Divemaster level. Amanpulo is ideal for novice divers, with its calm, clear seas in front of the Beach Club. More advanced divers can take advantage of the gentle drop-off to deeper waters. There are a number of fine sites on both sides of Pamalican, all just a few minutes offshore by boat. Certified divers should bring their certification cards with them. All scuba equipment is provided. Underwater lights and underwater digital cameras are also available. Divers must be at least eight years old. 6pm – Welcome cocktails and dinner on the beach. DAY 10 Wednesday, 15 March 2017 Amanpulo, Beach Casita (Palawan, Philippines) Included Meals: B L D Enjoy Amanpulo at your leisure. Lunch aboard your private jet. 22 JAPAN An urban sanctuary atop the shimmering Otemachi Tower, Aman Tokyo is a monument to the modern-day Japanese capital, a place where dynamism is tempered with serenity. History, commerce and culture fusetruly cosmopolitan, yet intrinsically Japanese, it offers fascinating juxtapositions at every turn. Gleaming skyscrapers reach for the heavens beside 19th-century palaces; humming intersections exist alongside quaint lanes lined with convivial yakitori-ya, ramen shops and shochu bars; state-of-the-art shopping centres overlook beautiful parks, pink with cherry-blossom in spring. 23 DAY 12 Friday, 17 March 2017 Aman Tokyo, Deluxe Room (Tokyo, Japan) Included Meals: B L On arrival in Tokyo at 3.05pm, private transfer to Aman Tokyo (approximately 30 minutes). Spend the afternoon as you please. 6pm – Welcome cocktails with special guests and private Koto performance. Afterwards, enjoy dinner on your own at Aman Tokyo’s fine-dining restaurant or at a local restaurant. DAY 13 Saturday, 18 March 2017 Aman Tokyo, Deluxe Room (Tokyo, Japan) Included Meals: B TODAY’S SCHEDULED SHARED EXPERIENCES Choose one of the following: Sushi Making Class: learn how to prepare sushi’s basic rice with rice vinegar, slice various fish and vegetable ingredients, and roll, cut, and display the pieces, before enjoying your own (as well as your professional instructor’s) creations for lunch. Lunch is included with this experience. Sword Fighting Lesson: Japan’s ancient samurai swords were once employed during battle, and their use is today considered an art form. During your sword lesson you will practise movements evolved from the techniques used by samurai in battle. Lunch: Enjoy lunch at a local casual restaurant of your choosing (not included). 24 SUGGESTED EXPERIENCES The rest of the day is yours to explore Tokyo with your private car, driver, and guide. Discuss with your guide what you would like to see. Tsukiji Fish Market: visit the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world; in fact, it is one of the largest food markets of any kind. Here you can discover more than 450 types of seafood – a unique experience offering an insight into a country obsessed with acquiring the freshest possible ingredients for its cuisine. We avoid the tourist queues for the daily tuna auction, instead strolling around the surrounding area of Jogai, where you can visit an Aritsugu store to browse the world-renowned knives. The best time to visit is in the morning, around 08.30-10.00am. Imperial Palace East Gardens: the palace was once the world’s largest, though now only the inner circle remains. Seeing the palace itself requires joining a tour that lasts over an hour; instead, we recommend heading into the beautiful East Gardens, which are open to the public. During cherry-blossom season, this is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to take in the sakura (cherry blossom), as the grounds of the Imperial Palace and nearby Kitanomaru Park are covered in a pink-white floral blanket during the peak of the blossom season. Ginza: Tokyo’s premier shopping district is brimming with department stores, boutiques, restaurants and coffeehouses. The department stores’ basement-level food courts are a must-visit for local delicacies, freshly packed bento boxes, exquisite teas and more. Akihabara: Japan’s fascination with technology, fashion, Manga and youth culture come together on the ‘Akihabara scene’. Stroll through the flashing pachinko or video game parlours, a street dedicated to musical instruments, and electronics stores showcasing the latest gadgets. 21–21 Design Sight Museum: visit this striking collaboration between two of Japan’s leading contemporary figures in the arts: fashion designer Issey Miyake and architect Tadao Ando. 25 Mori Museum: visit Roppongi to explore one of Tokyo’s cutting-edge art venues, the Mori Museum, located on the top two floors of the 54-story Mori Tower. Be sure to take the elevator to the 54th floor for terrific views over the city from the Mori’s Sky Deck. Kitchen Town: Kappabashi Dougu street, also known as Kitchen Town, is a famous restaurant and kitchen supply shopping district. Browse the bargains on cups, bowls, trays, pottery, lacquerware, chopsticks, sashimi knives and copious other items. Don’t miss Maiduru, maker of the plastic food found in restaurant display cases. Practically an art, these plastic models are made as real and accurate as possible and look delicious enough to eat. Shibuya Crossing: Visit Shibuya crossing, one of the world’s most heavily used pedestrian intersections. When the light turns red all vehicular traffic comes to a halt and the crossing is momentarily filled with a frenzy of criss-crossing pedestrians. Neon lights and enormous video screens create a lively atmosphere. Hachiko Statue: From Shibuya Crossing visit the nearby Hachiko statue, perhaps Tokyo’s most famous meeting spot and a popular tourist destination. Hachiko is a small akita dog remembered for his remarkable loyalty. In the early 1920’s a professor who lived near Shibuya station would come home to find Hachiko waiting for him at the station every day. The professor died in 192,5 but the dog would continue to come to the station to wait for his owner until his own death 10 years later. Cat or Bunny Café: a curious experience, unique to Japan, where you can sip a drink accompanied by animals. Return to Aman Tokyo at 5pm. Enjoy dinner on your own at a local restaurant. Please ask the concierge about reservations and transportation. 26 DAY 14 Sunday, 19 March 2017 Aman Tokyo, Deluxe Room (Tokyo, Japan) Included Meals: B D TODAY’S SCHEDULED SHARED EXPERIENCE Tea Ceremony: experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, chanoyu. The Japanese tea ceremony originated more than 1,000 years ago when Japan adopted the Chinese practice of drinking powdered green tea, and following Zen Buddhist beliefs. A traditional Japanese tea ceremony is a spiritual experience that embodies harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity. The ceremony is a choreographed ritual of preparing and serving Japanese matcha green tea; traditional sweets are also served to balance the tea’s bitter taste. The aesthetics of the ceremony are paramount: one’s attention must focus on movement and gesture; even the placement of the tea utensils must follow a certain method. In this lesson you will learn the subtle yet significant ceremony etiquette shaped by Zen Buddhism. Lunch: Enjoy lunch at a local casual restaurant of your choosing (not included). SUGGESTED EXPERIENCES Explore Tokyo with your private car, driver, and guide. Please note: You will tour with Mr. Hu & Mrs. He, and will share the private vehicle and guide. Omotesando Street: one of central Tokyo’s smartest boulevards, with broad pavements, tall trees and hip boutiques and cafés lending it a European feel. Omotesando Street is also a great place to begin a tour, by car or on foot, of the Aoyama neighborhood. Here you’ll find high-end global fashion, but it’s the cutting-edge architecture designed by world-renowned names, including Herzog and de Meuron, Tadao Ando and Jun Aoki, that is the real draw. 27 Nezu Museum: tucked away from the bustling commercial boulevard of Omotesando in the fashionable Aoyama neighborhood, this museum was established in 1941 by Japanese industrialist Nezu Kaichiro to preserve his personal collection for posterity. Today the museum is housed in a striking modern building designed by architect Kengo Kuma. Kaichiro’s collection of Japanese and other Asian premodern arts form the core of the museum’s collection, while donations from private collectors have helped the overall collection grow to more than 7,000 objects, including calligraphy, painting, sculpture and ceramics. A number of pieces are now designated as National Treasures. Harajuku: although Sundays are famously the day for Tokyo’s youth to flaunt their sartorial style, you can still get a sense of the unique local scene here along Takeshita Street; here, every afternoon, local teenagers swap their staid school uniforms for something a little more on-trend. Meiji Shrine: the shrine’s giant torii gates, surrounded by the lush environs of Yoyogi Park, are another of Tokyo’s iconic sights. Originally built in 1920, the shrine was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1958. It is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, who ruled from 1868 to 1912, presiding over Japan’s transition from centuries of shogun rule to imperial power. Shinto is Japan’s indigenous faith, with a uniquely beautiful reverence for nature. The shrine’s natural setting, amid the expanse of Yoyogi Park, is a rare sight. Tokyo Sky Tree: Head towards the Tokyo Sky Tree, currently the tallest broadcast tower in the world. Heald CEO & Co-Founder of Remote Lands Catherine is an adventurer, an Asiaphile and a serial entrepreneur. She describes her greatest fear in life as mediocrity, and her second greatest as boredom -- and the combination being the stimulus for Remote Lands. A former software engineer and technology entrepreneur, she considers herself lucky to have found her true calling in 2005, and to have been able to turn her life’s passion for Asian travel into her profession. Some of her most memorable travel experiences include having a private lunch with the Queen of Bhutan in her palace; a magical New Years Eve in Mongolia sharing a ger with a nomad family at -35°F; hiking to far-flung hill tribe villages off the grid in eastern Myanmar; off-piste skiing in Gulmarg, Kashmir in 1989; trekking alone in the Everest region of Nepal; taking a private helicopter up to view the peak of the third highest mountain in the world, Kanchenjunga in Sikkim; cruising in Siberia from the Arctic Circle to Vladivostok in a Russian icebreaker; chartering a private plane to visit remote corners of the Gobi Desert and eastern Mongolia; getting married in an Iban tribal longhouse in Borneo, a Hindu temple in Kerala and a Buddhist temple in Bhutan; and travelling solo across North Korea. Catherine (née Evans) graduated from Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, and then headed to New York to attend Columbia University (Barnard College). 1980 was the first year Columbia offered Computer Science as a major, and her instinct told her computers would become increasingly integral into business and life in general. She earned her BA in Computer Science in 1984 and then spent four years writing code for Wall Street’s LF Rothschild, Unterberg and Tobin while at- tending NYU’s Stern School of Business, but she left for Hong Kong before she earning her MBA. She lives with her husband, Donald Heald, a collector and purveyor of rare books and manuscripts, and their white Labrador, Burma, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and in Sherman, CT. Her proudest accomplishments include having been youngest female CEO of a publicly traded American company at age 33 (as Catherine Winchester); being featured onstage with Bill Gates in two of his major keynote speeches in 1991 and 1993; and finishing the 1985 NYC Marathon in 101st place with a time of 3:17. She still runs 40 miles a week, albeit rather slowly now, and credits running and the self-discipline she learned from daily training with being the foundation for all her achievements in life. 30 Client Agreement I, the client, acknowledge that I have voluntarily applied for the trip as specified above.
