Message from
the Northern Region Manager
Happy 2013!
I hope you
all enjoyed a
well-earned
summer break
with family and
friends.
Our last Northern
Connection was in September 2012,
so there has been quite a bit happening
in the Northern Region since then –
92 events across the region to be exact.
Across these events we have engaged
with just over 3,000 individual members,
with many attending more than one
event, for a total engagement of over
8,000 members. The NZICA team has
enjoyed working alongside members for
these events to make them a success.
Late August and September was the
busy season for Presidential functions,
where we honour our new and
milestone members, as well as our new
NZICA Fellows. Congratulations go
out to all our Auckland and Northland
members who were recognised in 2012.
The year was particularly special for
Auckland as we honoured Jim Hoare
FCA, who has just been made a Life
Member of NZICA. This is the highest
honour that a member can receive, with
there only being 15 Life Members at
any one time. It was very special to be
able to celebrate this with Jim at the
Auckland Presidential Gala dinner.
The social calendar included the
inaugural Auckland Quiz Championship
and successful Golf days in both
Auckland and Northland.
A new event this year across the country
has been the Regional Forums. These
were established as a direct result of
feedback from members during Fit for
Future 3 in 2011. Members told us
that they wanted a way to feedback
directly to NZICA leaders and to know
that feedback had been heard. We had
forums in Whangarei and in Auckland
with 50 and 150 members coming along
respectively. The forums were both
very informative and interactive with
great discussion between the panel and
members attending – on topics such
as the proposed merger, professional
development, communication and
Special Interest Groups (SIGs).
With the New Year now underway, I
am sure you are thinking about your
professional development for 2013.
Please keep an eye on our events portal
to view and book the courses that we
are putting on in your local area. Also,
let us know if there is an area that you
would like training in that we do not
currently cover.
The SIGs have continued to grow
in 2013, with record numbers of
attendees across the board. The
Northland Leadership Team has also
supported the establishment of a
SIG for Northland members based
in Whangarei. To accommodate the
Auckland SIG growth we have changed
our webcasting provider, returning to
the Adobe Connect Platform. This will
ensure a stable platform that can have
up to 1,500 members logging in to any
webcasted SIG meeting. The 2013 SIG
subscriptions are now open, I encourage
you to join a SIG, it is a great way to get
some professional development while
also networking with your peers. Please
visit the Auckland SIG pages at nzica.com
for all the details.
Finally, I would like to farewell a valued
member of our team. Julian Harrison,
our SIG and Events Coordinator, left in
late November to take up an events role
with The Edge Performing arts team.
Julian worked with many members over
his two years with NZICA and I wanted
to take this opportunity to thank him
for the outstanding work he did. I wish
him all the best in his new role.
The 2013 Executive Insight programme
saw 16 tertiary students spend 3 days
each in a host organisation. Thank
you to all the students and hosts – and
congratulations to the winner, Claudine
Ann Catral and her host organisation
Brightstar NZ limited. We need more
hosts for 2013 so if you are interested
please contact the Auckland Office.
Late October was election season, with
13 people running for 4 vacant council
positions in Auckland. There are 3 new
faces, with 1 existing councillor retaining
his elected position. Please turn to page 17
to see the full list of Auckland councillors.
At the same time we ran nominations and
elections for the Local Leadership Teams,
we have profiled our new Auckland and
Northland Leadership Teams on pages
5-6 and 13-14 respectively.
Happy 2013 and we look forward to
seeing you at an event or function soon.

Welcome to new faces at NZICA Auckland
Paul Sullivan
Emma Marr
Paul joins NZICA’s Auckland Office as the
new Manager Strategy Implementation. He has recently moved to Auckland from
Wellington and is looking forward to
exploring a much larger city. Paul will
mainly focus on ensuring Fit for the
Future 3 continues smoothly, analysing
member needs over their membership
“lifespan” and generally turning his hand to whatever
challenges arise. Paul has been working in Regulatory Quality
at The Treasury and Value for Money at the Ministry of
Social Development. Prior to that he had roles in utilities,
the United Nations insurance and keeps busy with a number
of not-for-profit directorships (he is currently on the board
of the Foundation of the Blind). He has a variety of interests
outside of work which (mostly) keep him out of trouble. Emma has joined NZICA as Tax Specialist
to manage the creation of the New
Zealand Tax module for the new
Chartered Accountants Program. Whilst
the first three modules of the new
Chartered Accountants Program, jointly
created by NZICA and the Institute of
Chartered Accountants in Australia
(ICAA), launched in New Zealand and Australia in February
2013, the New Zealand Tax module will be available from 2014.
Emma joins us from Vector Limited where she was a senior tax
advisor, she has also held positions in several accounting and
law firms. Emma is looking forward to working closely with
members of NZICA to develop a comprehensive tax module
that meets the needs of employers and future members.
David Blackwell
Gavin Leary
Gavin has recently come to New Zealand
with his young family having lived most
of his life in London.
Gavin joins NZICA in the role of Sales
Executive – Advertising as part of the
Journal Advertising Sales team having
previously worked in the UK for over 10
years in a similar advertising sales capacity.
Gavin’s primary responsibility and purpose will be to build on the
success of the award winning Journal magazine by developing
from scratch a new Work/Play section within the Journal. The
intention in time is for this section of the Journal to become
its own magazine supplement. Work/Play will feature exciting
features and articles relating to lifestyle products and services
aimed at the interests of our growing membership.
David joins us as SIG and Events
Coordinator with a background primarily
in sports and major event management.
After completing his post graduate
studies at the University of Otago David
relocated back to Auckland where he was
first employed by Auckland Rugby League
(previous owners of the Carlaw Park
precinct), before moving to Wellington to work coordinating the
official VIP programme of Rugby World Cup 2011.
Following the completion of the tournament held throughout
New Zealand, he moved across to the UK where his most recent
role was with the organising committee of the London 2012
Olympic Games. David sees his current role at NZICA as a great
opportunity to utilise his event management skills and transfer
them from the sporting environment to the corporate sector.
The first edition of Work/Play will be in the March 2013 Journal.

Letter from the trenches
Hello again. It been a very busy few
months here in the Northern Region
I’ve had the pleasure of getting out and
about and meeting more members and
attending some great events.
By far the most pleasurable thing I have
done recently is attending The Lion
Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme
Auckland regional awards events. The Lion Foundation Young
Enterprise Scheme is a one-year programme that gives secondary
students the chance to set up and run a small business. Each
team has had to form a company, research and write a business
plan and bring their product or service to market. It gives me
great pleasure to be involved in such a wonderful program and to
represent NZICA who are a national sponsor of the scheme and
of the Young Managing Director of the Year Award.
The businesses on display ranged from innovative composting
bins and zany lamps made from recycled plastic to olive oil and
many, many more. When talking to the pupils and listening
to their presentations, two teams really caught my attention;
Team Lumiere from Takapuna Grammar and Manurewa High
School’s Caring and Co.
Team Lumiere won both Excellence in Sustainability and
Excellence in Commitment at the North Shore event for their
lights. The students created more than 200 lights, made from
more than 400 Starbucks lids and 1,500 bags. Many of you may
have seen these zany lamps as the table centrepieces at the
recent AUT Excellence in Business Awards.
Caring & Co, a team from South Auckland’s Manurewa High
School, created their own extra virgin olive oil with proceeds
from every bottle sold funding local children through the Life
Education Trust programme (Life Education teach children
about the wonder of life, themselves, and other people, with
the aim of showing them how to reach their full potential) I
found this team fantastic in their readiness to engage with
people and their ability to speak about their business with
maturity and insight far beyond their years. The company has
been so successful; it’s funded enough spaces for every child
at a South Auckland primary school to join the Life Education
Trust programme. The company’s approach, attitude and
success lead to Caring & Co winning The Lion Foundation
Young Enterprise Scheme Company of the Year award and to
Caring & Co’s Managing Director, 17-year-old Lar Su’a, winning
the coveted NZICA Young Managing Director of the Year.
In early October I attended the University of Auckland’s
Department of Accounting and Finance 2012 Scholarship
and prize awards evening where NZICA sponsored both
scholarships and prizes for outstanding students (see page 11
for more details and photos).
More recently Christian Wilson, Director-Sales, and I attended the
Gradfest2012 at Unitec. NZICA sponsored of the following awards:
NZICA Best Overall Performance Bachelor of Business Accountancy
First Year Student – Jierong Guo
NZICA Best Overall Performance Accountancy Second Year Student
– Harveen Baja
NZICA Best Overall Performance Accountancy Third Year Student
– Salma Delara
NZICA Best Overall Accountancy Graduate – Shan Qi
In the employer space I have been busy visiting many employers
for several different reasons. Some visits have been around IT
checks for the roll out of the new online candidate area and
online learning environment for the new Chartered Accountants
Program, before the first users log on this year. More recently I have
been out visiting people to introduce the new AOC (assessment of
competence) pathway to the AT College and building awareness of
the excellent products and services on offer for NZICA members.
Thank you to all those members who have taken the time to
see me, especially those who have welcomed me when I arrived
unannounced as I was in the neighbourhood. It is always great to
speak with members and to get their feedback on NZICA and other
issues, be it a synopsis of the changing kiwi economy over the last 3
decades, which one member recently gave me, (very informative and
well received by this fresh immigrant), or just to have a quick chat
about the Red Rose thrashing of the All Blacks. Swing low sweet ….!
Till next time…

“Networking with Power”
NZICA Privilege Partner Westpac kindly hosted this unique event which is
the first in a series of collaborative events provided for members of both the

The event was a great success, attracting
83 young accounting, business and legal
professionals from across the city.
Simon Power, Head of Westpac Private
Bank and former Minister of Commerce
gave a frank and inspirational presentation
sharing insights into his early career and
experiences. Drinks, dinner and live music
followed at the Britomart Country Club
where young members from both
professions enjoyed the opportunity
to network in an informal and friendly
environment.
To enquire about joining the Young
Accounts SIG please contact David

Many thanks to Westpac who provided
the stunning venue and catering for
this event.
The exams are over
let’s celebrate!
The Young Accountants SIG invited candidates who had just
sat the marathon six hour PCE exam on 26 October to the
Foodstore for a few drinks to rejoice and breathe a sigh of
relief that another milestone on the path to gaining their

PD and pinot
on Waiheke
NZICA Auckland has introduced a programme of
full day courses to be held on Waiheke Island. A short 35 minute sail from the Auckland CBD, the Waiheke Series provides
an opportunity to mix in a little pinot and sun while completing your
professional development needs (not to mention taking advantage of the
breath taking views and award winning food on offer.)
The inaugural Waiheke course was
held at the end of September at the
award-winning Cable Bay Vineyards. The
day had all the essentials of a typical
spring day on the island: crisp clean air,
a light breeze and gentle sunlight. The
power to influence – extended edition
was presented by Cherri Holland who
educated attendees on the best way
to get messages across in sensitive
situations. This included practicing
verbal skills and understanding how
others think. Before heading back
to Auckland, the group enjoyed a
wine tasting and networking session
overlooking Cable Bay with the city
skyline in the distance. Look out for
further full day courses to be held on
Waiheke in 2013.

Northland Leadership
Team Chair’s Report
Welcome to 2013! I hope you all
managed to get some well-deserved
rest and recreation over the holiday
period and are ready to start the New
Year with all the challenges it will bring.
What a year 2012 was for the Northland
Leadership Team. I would like to thank
my Leadership Team members for their
invaluable contribution throughout the year. We have all
been very busy in this inaugural year of the “Local Leadership
Teams” that were voted in as part of the F4F3 changes. Thank
you too, to our Regional Coordinator “extraordinaire” Emma
Rankin. She has done a fantastic job, organising our local PD
and SIG events, Presidential Dinner and Awards Night, Regional
Forum and the Golf Tournament. These events have been well
represented by our members, thank you to those members
who attended. It has been rewarding to see so many familiar
and new faces come to these events.
Our most recent event was our annual “Golf” afternoon and
Christmas Dinner. Thank you to those members who attended
and had a lovely (or was that frustrating!) time trying to get
that little white ball in the hole! A fun time was had by all,
and fortunately the weather held out for us. Thank you also, to
NZICA Privilege Partner Westpac, Jerry Clayton BMW and NZ
Tax Trading Company Ltd for your generous sponsorship.
We hope you, our members, have enjoyed the events we have
held and look forward to more. If you have any ideas you would
like to put forward for future events for our Leadership Team to
consider, please let us know. Your input is invaluable in assisting
us to provide meaningful events for our members.
Our focus is to improve engagement with our members,
and I think we are well on the way to achieving this with the
development of our local “Generalist” SIG which delivered two
very informative meetings in 2012. We have had a reasonably
good response to our SIG meetings and it is a great networking
opportunity for members also to enjoy a drink and nibbles and
socialise with your colleagues.
Thank you to our SIG committee and Emma for procuring our
speakers and organising these events. We aim to deliver four SIG
meetings per year, so keep an eye out in the emails for our first
SIG event for 2013. We are also in the process of starting a Young
Accountants Group with the first event proposed for just after
Easter, so all you ‘Young Accountants’ watch out for this meeting
in the email notifications. We would love to see you attend and
get to know your fellow members.
Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me
as Chair of our Leadership Team/Branch Committee over the
past three years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Chair
and have learnt a great deal being part of our wonderful
Institute. It is now time to hand over the reins to our next
Chair, Adelle Allbon CA. Congratulations and thank you Adelle
for taking over.
Best wishes to all our Northland members, and I hope you all
have a productive and prosperous 2013.
Shiralee McLean CA
Northland Leadership Team Chair 2012
Sadly, Shiralee McLean has stepped down from her role
as Leadership Team Chair. NZICA Northland would like to

strong leadership has seen Northland remain a high performing
region with high levels of activity and engagement. Shiralee will
remain on the Northland Leadership Team for 2013 with Adelle
Allbon taking over the reins as Chair.
NORTHland
Leadership Team 2013
Nominations and voting for the 2013 Northland
Leadership team took place between September and
November 2012.
As a result of this process, the Northland Office is proud to
announce that the following members will form the 2013
Leadership Team (LT) for the Northland region.

in both corporate and compliance accountancy.

On 5 December NZICA Northland had the pleasure of
hosting the annual 9 hole Ambrose Golf Tournament

Sundry prizes for spectacular golf
The Pines Golf Club in Parua Bay provided a picturesque

the threat of rain was present, most of the 35 playing managed
to stay dry for the duration of the tournament.

A lot of fun was had by all on the course, with Greg Atkins’
drink rounds ensuring everyone was kept in the festive spirit.
After spending a couple of hours completing the course

SIG event a success
The newly formed Northland Business Development Special Interest
Committee did a great job of organising the second SIG offering created by
Northland members for Northland members.
Stephen Ganley, Karen Bell and Peter Byers worked closely with representatives from
Thomson Wilson Law to provide a relevant legal update for Northland members.
With 32 Northland professionals in attendance, feedback was positive with attendees
gaining value from the content and enjoying the opportunity to network with peers
at the post event drinks.
In an effort to deliver more relevant content to Northland’s Corporate, Public and
Not-for- Profit sector members, NZICA Northland piloted participation by webcast
of the November meeting of the popular Auckland based Company Accountants SIG
at NorthTec’s interactive learning centre. The session, which was attended by 25

Region Forum
Accounting
teachers update
Auckland’s inaugural Region Forum was held on
27 September with the purpose of bringing key
stakeholders together for an open discussion on issues
affecting members in the region.
This annual one-day event is aimed specifically at
secondary school teachers of both the NCEA and CIE
curriculums and provides a valuable opportunity for
teachers to keep up to date with recent developments in
the accounting profession.
The event held on 29 August, attracted 35 teachers from
around the Auckland region and across the decile spectrum.
Bob Cooper, NZICA Sales Executive, updated delegates on
developments and plans in the secondary school space
during an interactive session which opened the floor to lots
of feedback and ideas from teachers on how NZICA can best
support them in their role.
The forum provided the perfect opportunity for the 145 members
in attendance to communicate their needs and preferences
relating to NZICA service delivery and to receive a brief update on
NZICA strategy and key activities. Key themes discussed were the
merger rationale (costs and benefits to members), issues around
admitting and maintaining members, the difficulty and cost of
mandatory CPD requirements and reinforcing that both SIGs
and online forums are a useful way of engaging and fulfilling CPD. The question was also raised around what NZICA was doing to be
relevant for the changing demographics of members in Auckland.
2012 NZICA President Richard Austin FCA, NZICA Board Chair
Graham Crombie FCA, NZICA CE Terry McLaughlin FCA, Auckland
Leadership Team Chair Michael Prasad CA and local Council and
Auckland Leadership Team members were all on hand to mix and
mingle with members following the formal part of the event. The
Region Forum will be an annual event, so please keep an eye on
your event emails and www.nzica.com/events for details in 2013.
Some of these ideas are currently being worked on and
developed for implementation in the 2013 academic year.
Sue Keats, Senior Manager – Policy and Quality Assurance
with NZICA provided an overview of the new Chartered
Accountants Program and pathway that many current
students will be embarking on in the near future. Teachers
were also treated to an insight into the NZICA Code of Ethics
by NZICA’s Assistant Director – Professional Support, Allan
Duffy, whose case study dilemma created a high level of
interest some hot debate.
By far the biggest draw card on the day’s programme, and
who lived up to all expectations, was Professor Grant Samkin,
from the University of Waikato and his insightful examination
of the AFRS Framework Concepts and their application in
the classroom.
If you are interested in taking part in this year’s accounting
teachers update, would like to know more or be involved in

UNCOVERED –
TAX IN AUCKLAND
Peter Vial leads the tax team which
is made up of Stephen Rutherford,
Jolayne Trim and Lindsay Ng who
are based in Auckland and Aylton
Jamieson and Carla Feakin who are
based in Wellington.
The tax team has six main functions:
Relationship with Inland Revenue
The Tax Team looks after NZICA’s
relationship with Inland Revenue. We
meet with different groups (eg Policy
Advice, Office of the Chief Tax Counsel,
Operations) regularly and update them
on our members’ concerns.
Tax policy
We comment on policy proposals and
Issues Papers and raise policy issues
with Government officials that need
addressing. We make written and oral
submissions to Parliament on all tax bills.
Member queries
Members can submit questions to us
via e-mail on [email protected]
or call us through the customer service
centre. We don’t provide specific client
based tax advice – in most cases we will
refer you to relevant commentary, other
resources or an appropriate contact in
the IR, or a tax or legal specialist. If your
question raises a matter that has wider
application to taxpayers nationwide we
will escalate the issue within IR.
Tax Advisory Group
The Tax Team works with the NZICA Tax
Advisory Group (TAG) that represents
members with a particular interest
in, and passion for, tax law and policy. We and the TAG meet regularly with
the Minister of Revenue and senior
representatives from Inland Revenue
and the Treasury.
Auckland based Jolayne Trim, Lindsay Ng
and Stephen Rutherford
Seminars and presentations
The Tax Team prepares and presents
seminars around the country on topical
tax issues and areas that are of interest
to our members.
Extension of time arrangement
(EOT)
Every year NZICA renegotiates the EOT
agreement between the IR and tax
agents. The latest EOT Agreement can
be found on NZICA’s web site.
How can we help?
The Tax Team is here to support the
members of NZICA. We are often
successful in resolving members’
concerns and issues that relate to their
clients. Our successes are also successes
for our members and their clients.
We can be stronger and more effective if
you keep us informed. Let us know:
>your experiences with Inland Revenue –
particularly if they are good, but also
if you have an issue you would like
to discuss
>if you have technical or policy issues that
you are finding difficult
>your views on proposed changes to tax
law and policy or IR practice and policy
>suggestions for tax seminar topics.
