I might be meeting an artist one minute and a politician the next, with interviews, phone calls and emails in between. I was an artist myself for 10 years and that gave me my work ethic; you don’t have regular hours and weekends don’t really feature. The range of what we do at the Serpentine Gallery is so broad my working wardrobe needs to be a combination of authority and approachability, so I tend to wear a lot of tailored pants or dresses that are mid knee or below. When I was a young adult, no one considered a career trajectory but I was always ambitious, always going the extra mile. The Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is the most extraordinary role model – he’s 103 and still working. Exercise is an important part of my day. I have three dogs and striding round the park with them is unbelievably relaxing. To be with nature is a vital counterbalance to city life. The summer is an incredibly busy time for the Serpentine, so I look forward to the calmer winter months when I can spend more time with my five sisters. ‘‘I was always “I love bold costume jewelry like big chunky bracelets and a man’s watch.” ambitious, always going the extra mile” SHOP Julia'S STYLE4 ” MOST WANTED Uptown girls will love Proenza Schouler’s latest take on the PS1, while Theyskens’ Theory has downtown cool covered with punchy neon trims SHOP NATURAL WONDers4 Their kaleidoscopic knitwear has had the fashion world in a spin for over 50 years – we celebrate the enduring allure of Missoni O ANGELA MISSONI n seeing a Missoni collection for the first time in 1969, pioneering fashion editor Diana Vreeland famously exclaimed, “Look! It’s a dance with who I want PHOTO: Arthur Elgort to be, who I might be, who I am. I love dressing. I love an excuse for three or four changes a day. I live in Shropshire, and one of my favorite places in the world is home. I’m not really a very festive person but I love that turning point in the year. It’s a very reflective time for me. I spent Christmas in India last year which was extraordinary. ‘‘You’ve got to have good DANCING shoes. But there are times when you just have to kick them OFF!’’ It’s much easier for me to give a gift, but also I love receiving them. I’m always incredibly grateful when a gift is really thoughtful. It’s not a question of just giving something new – it’s really got to be a part of somebody’s life. What I wear one day affects what I wear the next. I don’t really have a uniform; it’s like a high-speed version of what happens on the runways. I’ve had some amazing presents over the years. SHOP our picks4 holiday muses 31-year-old Jen is the New York hipster and muse to Proenza Schouler that everyone wants to be friends with For me the holidays are about people coming together. It’s not about a specific place, so long as I am surrounded by family and friends eating a yummy all-day meal I’m happy. The best gift to give and to receive is a book. You can never go wrong because there’s always something new to learn. I grew up on the Upper East Side, so I love Central Park – especially the day after it’s snowed. The huge PHOTO: © Tierney Gearon Alice in Wonderland statue is the most gorgeous shape when it’s covered in snow. Never buy a present for someone that you wouldn’t want yourself. Obviously I think about that person but giving a gift should be about your love for the object as well as the person. My favorite Christmas movie is National Lampoon’s European Vacation. I know it’s not traditionally festive but it was always on TV during the holidays when I was a kid. I know every single word to that film. I’m a sentimental dresser, when I grow to love someone I connect with their work so much more. Recently I’ve met Richard Nicoll and Christopher Kane and I’ve known Proenza Schouler for years – they all have so much integrity and follow their own rules. Perfect Presents Our picks for Jen ‘‘I just love women who dress with a sense of humour. I don’t know if I’m that woman but I admire her’’ SHOP our picks4 PHOTO: Damon Heath for Figaro Japon holiday muses Perfect Presents Our picks for Tali Face of Burberry Prorsum and Acne, rock royalty Tali is destined for great things, and she’s still only 18 I spend Christmas in the English countryside with my family. We stay in a beautiful old house in Sussex and go for long walks in the forest and eat dinner by the fire. My rocking horse Riad is my favorite present ever. I was given him when I was one and I still have him in my bedroom – my baby sister Lyra Bee loves to play on him. ‘‘Style is natural CONFIDENCE, it’s not all about the clothes themselves but how the person inside brings them to LIFE’’ I think that it’s far better to give than receive. It doesn’t take much to share things with others, but the good feeling you get back from it is huge. London is my favorite city for fashion. It’s non-conformist and has such an eclectic mix. If you went out wearing a pirate costume no one would bat an eyelid. I love the style of Florence Welch, Anna Della Russo and Dita Von Teese. I also like people who embody the elegance of their era like Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. My style changes depending on where I am. For example when I’m in Ibiza I always dress in a relaxed way, which is the feeling that I get when I’m visit the there. I wear hats a lot. I think they bring guide character, confidence and completion to an outfit. GIFT SHOP our picks4 This week’s global hotlist of film, books, music, beauty and more fashion NOVEL STYLE Is it a book?
