President’s
Message
Roger Trendowski
I am honored to write my first message
as The Arc of Monmouth’s new Board President.
Having served on the board for 10
years, it is my pleasure to assume this new
role.
I wish to thank those who participated at our
June 26th Annual meeting: members of The
Arc, families and friends, and staff. Your
active support both financially and through
volunteer time is critical to the health and
welfare of our members and continued operation of our organization.
The board of directors and staff also wish
to provide a very special recognition to the
Circle of Friends members and volunteers
who are celebrating their 20th anniversary.
Congratulations for a job “well done” while
having great fun along the way.
I accepted the position of President of The
Arc because of your vote of confidence and
because I’m impressed with the range of
The Arc’s services and the quality of work. I
am also grateful for the assistance they provide to my daughter and son-in-law, Carissa
and Larry, who many of you know. They are
learning to live independently in an apartment, shop for groceries, pay bills, work at
jobs, use the bus for work and participate
in the recreation department’s “Circle of
Friends”. Their successes are directly attributable to the services offered by The Arc
of Monmouth.

Goodbyes to persons you value are hard. We have had some occasions
to say “goodbye” to some of our favorite people recently. The Arc of
Monmouth is very fortunate to have had Bob Gura as a member of our
Board of Directors for a long period of time. Bob first joined the board
in 1984, and served as President the first time from 1993 to 1995. He
took a short break from the Board several years ago, and was invited
to rejoin. He served a two-year term as President again a couple of
years ago. He has had several stints as Treasurer starting in 1987. Bob
has been a valuable presence at Board and committee meetings and
has supported events such as the Winter Glow Ball and the Golf Classic. Bob retired from the Board as of June 30. His sensible input on
leadership issues and his sense of humor will be greatly missed. Thanks
very much for everything you have done for The Arc of Monmouth, Bob.
We have also, sadly, said “goodbye” to our Dorothy B. Hersh High
School. The school operated in The Arc Center since 1990, and before
that was known as the Adolescent Education Program and was housed
at our Work Opportunity Center in Long Branch. Anyone who ever saw
the interactions of school staff and students or attended one the graduation ceremonies, shows, or fundraising events at the school knows it
was a special place. Always there was a sense of a shared, supportive
learning community. The teachers and staff fostered that supportive
atmosphere. We sadly say goodbye to the staff. We deeply thank the
school employees for their work with the Hersh High students, and wish
them great success and happiness in the future.
As we embark on the start of FY 2013, I wish to thank all of the donors,
supporters and friends of The Arc of Monmouth. Your support is crucial
to maintaining our vital services for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Thank you.
President’s Message (continued from p.1)
Over the next few years, The Arc will be facing many hurdles from government funding sources, competition and changes in the needs of our
members. As a result, we need your help more than ever before.
You all can help by giving us your input… responding to our questionnaires, talking to staff, and contacting us via email or phone. We want
to hear from you. Family and friends can also help by volunteering in
the numerous opportunities: sometimes your personal time, sometimes
with your resources. Recent events where we always can use more assistance include the Golf Classic, 5K run and Walk, Art Exhibits, and so
on. We can always use help in some of the service areas too, for example at the thrift shops, at the Work Opportunity Center (WOC), etc.
For those who have helped in the past, thank you. For those who can
contribute more time and talent, thank you.

Board Spotlight
The Arc is pleased to welcome Father F. Hank Hilton
to the board of directors.
Father Hilton is the brother of the late Judith Hilton, who was first served by The Arc of Monmouth in
the early 1960s. He holds a Ph. D from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, a M.Ed. from Harvard
University, a Th.M. and M.Div. from Weston School
of Theology, and a B.A. and M.A. in Economics from
Fordham. Father Hilton resides in Atlantic Highlands and in Metuchen where he is Parochial Vicar
of Saint Francis Cathedral and teaches Economics
at Rutgers.
Over the years, he has been involved with The Arc
of Monmouth in many ways, ranging from volunteer
duties at the summer camp, Special Olympics programs, youth group and tag sale fundraisers to bus
driver for a variety of day programs. His dedication
comes full circle with his new board position.
Concurrently, The Arc has a new fund established in
his sister Judith’s honor. The Judith Hilton Transportation Fund provides free travel to individuals
in need of travel to Recreation’s Tuesday Night Socials. To donate to this fund, please click “donate”

May 5, 2012 was a cool, damp day-perfect for runners, but a real hair
frizzler for our walkers! Early morning saw over 50 people running the
professionally timed and recorded 5K through the streets of Tinton Falls.
The top male and female runners were Joseph Rooney of Howell and Teresa Wilbert of Wall.
After the race, over 200 Walkers took to the
track after a breakfast supplied by Wegmans of
Manalapan and Starbucks in the Grove, Shrewsbury. Walkers get hungry and they were more
than satisfied with the hot dog lunch provided
by the Lodges of the 17th Masonic District.

Throughout the day, Meridian Health’s Dr. Bernard entertained the children while DJ Nicky, one of our served individuals, provided great music
and a wonderful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Assemblywoman
Caroline Casagrande and Executive Director Mary Scott inspired our walkers at the starting ceremonies.
Over 300 people turned out at Liberty Park II in
Tinton Falls to raise nearly $26,000 for health
care, employment and other vital programs at
The Arc.
Special thanks to the 40+ volunteers who assisted with the day’s events,
and for the support of the Tinton Falls police, Office of Emergency Management, EMS South & the Wayside Fire Department.

Golf Classic Recap
by Ginny Otley
The day began bright and sunny on Monday, June 11 for the Third
Annual Edward M. Rosell Arc Golf Classic at the Jumping Brook
Country Club. Although the sun decided to stay behind the clouds for the
rest of the day, rain did not make an
appearance and 72 golfers enjoyed a
barbeque lunch before hitting the links.
At the end of the day we had lots of winners!
First Place Team – Team Roselle
Long Drive – Colleen Ciecura (Womens) and Phil Brinkman (Mens)
Closest to Pin – Tom Scavelli
The day concluded with cocktails and a wonderful buffet dinner
accompanied by a few words from the

Play Ball!
On June 30, over 100 friends of The Arc attended a BlueClaws baseball game at First Energy Stadium in Lakewood. The excursion was part of the BlueClaws “Community Partners” program, where nonprofits receive a
portion of each ticket they sell to the game.
At the same event, 20 volunteers from The Arc worked in the stadium’s
concession stands to raise additional funds for the nonprofit.
Special thanks to The Anabel Foundation and The Arc of Monmouth board member Francine Catanese, who generously purchased tickets on behalf of served
individuals who would not otherwise have been able to afford the excursion.
But Wait! There is still a chance to attend a BlueClaws game and support The
Arc of Monmouth. Our next outing will occur on Friday, August 24 at 7:00 pm. For $10 tickets, please visit
www.arcofmonmouth.org/blueclaws or call (732) 493-1919 ext. 125. A supervised trip, including transportation, is available through the Recreation Department for $35 per member. Call Recreation at (732) 493-0225.

Pizza Party
Socialization and recreation are a very important part
of the work we do at The Arc of Monmouth, so we
were thrilled when Thommy O’Brien of Fair Haven,
accompanied by Jack Privetera of The Anabel Foundation, approached The Arc about throwing a recurring
pizza party for individuals served by The Arc.
The inaugural party was held
on Monday night, March 19 at
the Knollwood School in Fair
Haven, and was attended by
nearly 80 particpants from
residential programs at The
Arc.
Thommy and Marisa O’Brien
coordinated the event along
with Jack and several of
their friends, providing pizza, sugar-free desserts and
drinks and music. Thank you to everyone who made
this event possible!

closely with the club
providing the supervision for the evening to ensure
it is a smoothly run event.
Club members are already planning and looking forward to next year’s 30th Spring Formal. It’s going to
be fantastic!
Disability Policy Seminar
Now more than ever, it is critical to be informed about national issues that impact people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Board president Neil Fleishman, self-advocate Roxanne Oka and Associate Executive
Director Kathy Mullery traveled to Washington D.C. in April to attend the Disability Policy Seminar hosted by The
Arc of the United States and four other national advocacy organizations.
Individuals spoke of the many threats to essential services and programs such as Medicaid and Social Security.
The goal was to inform legislators how much of a “lifeline” these programs are for people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Neil, Roxanne and Kathy met with representatives from Congressmen Rush Holt and
Christopher Smith’s offices to speak to them about our concerns and to
ask that they do not support cuts to these essential services.
For information on the Disability Policy Seminar and to read legislative
fact sheets on topics such as education policy, employment, the Affordable Care Act or current issues in federal funding, visit www.thearc.org.
We will continue to share important legislative alerts as issues arise.

The 2nd Annual Resident Picnic
by Cynthia Steets
Question: what happened on September 22, 2011 in the pouring, soaking rain?
Answer: The First (Annual?) Residential Picnic in Wolcott Park in Eatontown!
Not to be discouraged, over 70 participants from all residential programs at The Arc of Monmouth attended the
2nd annual picnic in Wolcott Park on June 14th. It was a sunny, comfortable day for an outdoor event that
featured dancing and a BBQ with hotdogs, salads and desserts. Some other
highlights were ball-catching, board games, visiting with friends, basketball,
taking walks and polishing up on golf swings.
Nick Nellegar, Chief of the Charcoals, Guru of the Grills, got a tan this year, in
contrast to the soaking he endured last year. Nick’s such a great griller that the
weather somehow does not affect his delivery of perfectly cooked food!
Rob Cordasco, Associate Manager from Virginia Manor, commented: “Everyone residents and staff, had an excellent time with activities that suited them well,
from golf to dancing!”
Michele Ricciardi, Associate Manager from Marc
Manor, said, “I know my residents were talking about the picnic for days after
and how much fun they had. I met and got to know residents and staff from
other houses, which was very neat. Something that really stuck out was how
involved everyone was; you would see staff walking over to different tables and
interacting, residents talking to other residents and staff. It was a wonderful
afternoon and it ran smoothly.”
The picnic planners/workers (Tom, Peggy, Peach, Nick, George, Donna, Dawn,
Cynthia) want to thank all staff for transporting our residents, bringing delicious desserts, and for leading fun games and activities. Thank you to our special guests, Mary Scott, Kathy Mullery, Suzanne Liberi and Neil Fleischman.
Students with I/DD Perform in Brookdale Community College’s
Spring Dance Recital by Allan Cohen
Keep Achieving (Kach) at Brookdale is a college program for individuals with I/DD. It is a joint venture of Brookdale Community College and The Arc of Monmouth, partially funded by the Walmart Foundation.
Shannan Coomber, a student in The Arc of Monmouth’s Kach program and Brookdale’s Modern Dance II class, participated in the college’s May 5 Spring dance recital. Shannan was joined by fellow Kach student James Smith
for one of her numbers, and was part of an ensemble in her other.
Professor Doreen Laperdon-Addison, who instructs the dance classes at Brookdale and directed the recital, stated afterwards: “It was a pleasure having
Shannon in class and watching her and Jimmy perform on Saturday. Seeing
Shannon and the joy she derives through dance is inspiring for everyone.”
Ms. Laperdon-Addison means what she says. On Wednesday, May 23, Ms. Laperdon-Addison presented a check to The Arc of Monmouth/Kach program.
The Dance Club, which uses their recitals to raise funds for the club, was so
inspired by Shannan’s participation that they decided to donate those monies to The Arc of Monmouth in honor
of her participation. Everyone at The Arc of Monmouth is extremely proud of Shannan, and we are very grateful
for the Dance Club’s generosity.
Pictured in photo, l to r: Dance Professor Doreen Laperdon-Addison, The Arc of Monmouth Associate Executive Director Kathleen Mullery, Dance
Club President Crystal Stephens Monsanto, Individual and Family Supports Director Sarah Logan, Keep Achieving (Kach) at Brookdale Student Shannan Coomber, Peer Mentor Glynnis Tan and Kach Coordinator Allan Cohen.

The Power of Art
Volumes have been written about the healing power of art, and the importance of art in public schools as a catalyst
in the development of student’s minds. At The Arc of Monmouth, art is incorporated into nearly all of the agency’s
programs, and recently, all programs showed this power in full force.
The Work Opportunity Center and Adult Services programs create arts and
crafts projects on a regular basis. The Recreation department takes many
trips to performing arts venues. The adjacent article describes the dance
journey of two students in the Kach
college program. Of course, the most
obvious example of art at The Arc is
in the Employment program, which is
operates the Red Horse Art Gallery at
Freehold Raceway Mall.

However, on Tuesday evening, June 26,
art was the focal point of the agency’s Annual Meeting.
Art Show Coordinators Thea Strong,
Michael Turner and Nan Owen
For several months, Employment’s Thea
Strong and Nan Owen have been collecting artwork from participants in all departments. They were guided and assisted by Michael Turner, a dedicated volunteer
who used the art samples to create a catalogue of art for the Annual Meeting.
“The quality of the artwork is astounding,” commented Thea Strong, “which is why
we felt compelled to transform the simple art exhibit into a juried show”.
At Ms. Strong’s suggestion, art judges were enlisted from some of the Red Horse
Gallery’s partner agencies. Vanessa Young of VSA Arts NJ and Sandy Taylor and
Lisa Marie O’Connell of the Monmouth
County Arts Council were on hand to
present art awards in a variety of categories. Every participant was a winner however, and came home with a ribbon.

Over 140 guests attended the meeting,
which included dinner, the art show, board elections and an overview of

on the occasion of their twentieth anniversary.
