The event has taken on greater importance because of the recent incidents within

Dear Friends,
Although I could not join you today, I am happy to add my support for the CT Against
Violence Bridgeport Summit.
As a father of two young daughters, I know how important it for our children to be safe in
our schools and communities and am delighted to recognize the important role of CT Against
Violence in the City of Bridgeport.
The prevalence of drug abuse and violence is a challenge that millions of people face in our
country, but these problems among our youth present especially serious concerns with severe
and potentially deadly consequences. One step towards preventing this growing epidemic is
to ensure our teachers and schools have the necessary tools and funding to successfully
alleviate bullying, violence and drug use among students. However, it is equally important
that we, parents and community leaders, take part in this effort by providing a support
network at home and communicating with our children about the risks and dangers of drug
use and gun and gang violence. By working together, we can effectively address these issues
so the youth of our communities can focus on what is important - their academic success and
development as young adults.
I thank CT Against Violence for its work to put a stop to youth drug use and violence in our
state, and will do my part to continue promoting programs and legislation that will help our
children become more aware of their actions and encourage care and respect in our younger
generations.
Sincerely,
j
Jim Himes
