In doing this, OCE fosters the training and development of the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs and is a key partner with Ontario’s industry, universities, colleges, research hospitals, investors and governments. The Toronto Financial Services Alliance (TFSA) is a unique, public–private partnership dedicated to growing Toronto region’s financial services cluster and building it as a “top ten” global financial services centre. Established in 2001, TFSA is a collaboration involving three levels of government, the financial services industry and academia. A champion of leading-edge technologies, best practices and research, OCE invests in sectors such as advanced health, information and communications technology, digital media, advanced materials and manufacturing, aerospace, transportation, energy and the environment including water and mining, and agriculture, agri-food. OCE is a key partner in delivering Ontario’s Innovation Agenda as a member of the province’s Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE). Funded by the Government of Ontario, the ONE helps Ontario-based entrepreneurs and industry rapidly grow their company and create jobs. Working collaboratively with industry and government, we build international awareness of the advantages offered by the Toronto region and we work with financial services companies from around the world that are exploring business opportunities in Toronto. We lead an integrated strategy with three main objectives: • To set, drive, and execute cross-sector priorities for the growth of jobs and investment in the Toronto region financial sector; • To promote awareness of the advantages of Toronto region’s financial services sector and its importance in order to grow our domestic and international reputation as a global financial services hub; • To identify and pursue initiatives to sustain and enhance the competitiveness of Toronto region’s financial sector as an attractive business environment and location for talent. oce-ontario.org To leverage the financial industry’s global reputation for stability, we have established the Global Risk Institute in Financial Services. We are delighted to be hosting this gathering, along with the Toronto Financial Services Alliance (TFSA), to bring together select representatives from Ontario’s financial institutions, leading researchers from our colleges and universities, and technology companies and start-ups interested in innovation in the financial sector. This presents an excellent opportunity to begin identifying and building the working partnerships that can lead to made-inOntario solutions for addressing both individual business needs and industry-wide challenges. Previously, Tom was the CEO of the Accelerator Centre (AC) at the Waterloo Research and Technology Park and Associate Vice-President of Commercialization at the University of Waterloo (UW) and Director of Commercialization - IT & Communications at the University of Toronto. His career also includes more than 30 years in the IT sector including positions as Managing Partner at Catalyst Partnership; founder and CEO of Momentum Systems; founder and CEO of Applied Development Corp., and President of Canadian Data Processing Corp. His education includes a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Henley Management College/Brunel University in England, an MBA from the University of Toronto, and an Advanced Post Graduate Degree in Management Consultancy from Henley Management College. Tom has also completed his certification as a corporate director by the Institute of Corporate Directors and holds the ICD.D designation. Janet Ecker – President and CEO, Toronto Financial Services Alliance Janet L. Ecker is President and CEO of the Toronto Financial Services Alliance (TFSA), a growing public-private partnership dedicated to building Toronto as an international financial services centre. With government and industry support, she has also established the Global Risk Institute in Financial Services to leverage the sector’s global reputation for stability, as well as the Centre of Excellence in Financial Services Education to capitalize on the region’s talent advantages. The Centre has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as a best practice in collaborative public-private partnerships. A former Ontario Finance Minister and the first woman to actually deliver a budget in the province, Ms. Ecker also delivered significant public policy reforms as the Minister of Education, the Minister of Community and Social Services and Government House Leader. Before entering public life, Ms. Ecker was the Director of Policy for the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the doctors’ regulatory body. She currently sits on a number of boards and agencies and is also a member of the Ontario Finance Minister’s Economic Advisory Panel, the Premier’s Advisory Council on Government Assets and C.D. Howe Institute’s National Council. A frequent public speaker and media commentator, she was recognized as one of the “Most Influential People in the World’s Financial Centres” by Financial Centres International in 2010 and received a “Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award” from the Women’s Executive Network and the Richard Ivey School of Business in 2003. In 2014, she received the “Excellence in Leadership” award from the Transformation Institute for Leadership and Innovation. In 2012, she received a Queen Elizabeth II, Diamond Jubilee Medal for her public service. Ms. Ecker is also one of the founders of Equal Voice, a national, multi-partisan organization working to elect more women. Kevan Cowan – President, TSX Markets and Group Head of Equities, TSX Kevan joined the Toronto Stock Exchange’s Canadian Dealing Network in 1997. Prior to that Kevan was a partner in a major Canadian law firm. Since 1997, Kevan has been closely involved in the transformative changes that have occurred in the Canadian public markets, serving as Director of the Canadian Dealing Network, Senior Vice President of TSX Venture Exchange, Senior Vice President, Business Development of Toronto Stock Exchange, and President of TSX Venture Exchange. Kevan assumed his current role in 2008, and is responsible for the equities business of TMX Group, including Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, TMX Alpha, TMX Select, and related trading and issuer services. Kevan is Chair of the Toronto Financial Services Alliance, and on the board of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC). Page 7 Biographies Roger Moryoussef – Vice President, Application Operations & Services, Sunlife Financial Roger is a 30 year IT executive veteran specializing in Insurance, financial and data domains. Roger held various senior positions in Application Development, Database Services, Data Management, E-Business and Call Centre Services He currently leads Application Operations and Services for Sun Life Financial Services Recognized as an industry leader in Data and Information Management, Roger is accountable for Sun Life’s application operations which include maintenance, support, business continuity and compliance for all Enterprise Services applications. Roger also leads all aspects of Information Management Services including data architecture, database management, Business Intelligence Services and Capture, imaging, workflow including all big data initiatives. Nominated 5 times and a two time winner of Sun Life CEO award, Roger was awarded McGill’s highest academic standing. He also received the prestigious "IBM honours award" and is a winner of several external innovation industry awards in data with the most recent being an innovation award for the industry’s best data integration solution. Roger’s designations include Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI) which he earned with Distinction. An avid golfer and reader, Roger has two children and lives in Richmond Hill Ontario. Avi Pollock – Vice President, Innovation and Strategic Planning, RBC Avi Pollock has more than 20 years of experience as both an entrepreneur and intrapreneur. He has a strong track record of successfully building early-stage companies and implementing transformational initiatives in large, complex, multi-stakeholder organizations. As RBC’s Vice President, Innovation and Strategic Planning, Avi leads a team of 30 and is the lead strategist for RBC’s global Technology and Operations (T&O) organization. He also spearheaded the creation and rollout of RBC’s enterprise social network - branded RBC Connect. His Applied Innovation team has an enterprise-wide mandate to stimulate innovative activity by identifying and validating emerging technologies and opportunities that have the potential to drive client value and differentiate RBC from its competitors. Prior to joining RBC, Avi held executive roles in sales, business operations, and acquisition strategy for technology companies in start-up and growth phases. He previously held the position of EVP, Professional Services for a TSX-listed technology company. Avi resides in Toronto, Canada with his wife and two sons. Mark Wai – Vice President, Architecture & Strategy, Aviva Canada Inc. Mark Wai is a Vice-President at Aviva Canada, responsible for the Architecture, Digital and Enterprise Information Management. Reporting to the EVP of Aviva Canada, Mark oversees program strategy, execution and alignment between IT, business, enterprise projects and Aviva Group (based in UK). Prior to joining Aviva, Mark spent 20+ years in the financial and insurance industry with strong focuses on large scale business transformation, business-aligned technology strategy, enterprise architecture and business application development. Working closely with IT and business stakeholders, Mark has helped several large corporations successfully align their business, operations and technology environments – with track records of resulting in improved business profit, increased customer satisfaction and increased operational efficiency. In addition to corporate work, Mark also spent two years running a family business in the retail, luxury market. Mark has worked in many diverse industries and has extensive international experience. In particular, Mark has spent more than a decade working in US as a senior IT technologist and business executive. Mark has a Computer Science degree from Carleton University and a MBA degree from Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario. Mark is an avid endurance athlete and has run multiple marathons including the prestigious Boston Marathon. Mark has experience serving as a director on several Boards, both in public and private sector, most recently Ontario Puma Foundation (non-profit) and a private equity fund that develops commercial real estates. Page 8 Attila Barta – Director, Head of Architecture Wealth Management, BMO Attila Barta is a technology executive specialized in enterprise architecture and enterprise data management for Financial Services, Telecom, Healthcare and Government. Dr. Barta is a transformational element with excellent track record in setting up IT organization and moving them into operational phase as well as transforming existing IT organizations into high-performing operations. Dr. Barta is technology thought leader with a background in computer science research providing organizations with technology guidance for near and long term; establishing organizations to be on the wave of change in the 3.0 business environment, enabling them technology competitive advantage and providing them new business and market share opportunities. Dr. Barta is the founder of one of the first web shopping portals WebCat (1998), co-founder of EXIP - Executive Information Portal (2000) a social media collaboration tool for executive advisers based on semantic modeling and web collaboration, co-founder of ToX – The Toronto XML Server (2001), a native XML dbms as well as co-author of TurboXPath (2002), a stream query engine. Dr. Barta made significant contribution to IBM intraGrid (2004), a precursor of the cloud computing. Pat Horgan – Vice President, Manufacturing, Development & Operations, IBM Canada Pat leads business operations for IBM Canada including CIO, Supply Chain, Real Estate, Procurement, Corporate Citizenship and Government Programs. In addition, he provides leadership to the IBM Software Lab organization and the Microelectronic Manufacturing Plant in Bromont, Quebec. Both of these are the largest of their kind in Canada, holding world mandates. Pat participates on many Boards, including being 2013’s Chair of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, also on the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business, the Ontario Brain Institute, NRC Emerging Technologies, SSHRC and Research Matters. He also is on the board of local organizations such as York Region HR Council and Southlake Regional Health Centre. Pat is an Ivey Business School graduate and holds a CPA designation. Juan Luis Suárez – Director, The CulturePlex Lab, Western University Prof. Juan Luis runs the CFI-funded CulturePlex Lab at Western U. His background includes a PhD in Philosophy, a PhD in Literature, and a Global Executive MBA (IE Business School). His research deals with lean big data, human behaviour, digital innovation, cultural analytics, creativity and entrepreneurship. He is an international speaker and consultant on issues related to digital strategy, the digital revolution and its impact on organizations, and 360º digital view of the customer. He is the co-founder of startups MilaoLanguage and SylvaDB, a lean big data solution that gives the power of big data to the domain expert. He has numerous articles and books on several areas of research, and he has been the recipient of awards like the Polanyi Prize, the Early Research Award of the Government of Ontario, the Leaders Award of CFI, and several grants by SSHRC, Ontario, and Western U. Tony Bailetti – Associate Professor, Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University Tony Bailetti is the Director of Carleton’s Technology Innovation Management program (www.carleton.ca/it), Chair of the Lead to Win Council and Executive Director (Acting) of the VENUS Task Group. He holds a joint appointment in the Eric Sprott School of Business and the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Tony was presented with the 2011 Ottawa Innovation Community award from the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI). Tony’s research, teaching, and community contributions support the ecosystem approach to innovation for the purpose of creating technology jobs, launching and growing technology companies, and attracting investment. Tony has published in Research Policy, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, and R&D Management. He has supervised over 60 graduate level theses and projects. Tony Bailetti was born and raised in Peru. He received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in 1973 and 1976 respectively, from the University of Cincinnati. Tony joined Carleton University in 1979. Today he is a proud 34-years Carleton veteran and Ottawa resident. Tony has four children and six grandchildren. They are the treasures of his life. Page 9 Biographies Fei Chiang – Assistant Professor, Department of Computing and Software, McMaster University Fei Chiang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computing and Software, Faculty of Engineering, and is the Associate Director of the MacData Institute at McMaster University. Her research interests are broadly in the area of data management, with a focus on data quality, text mining, data privacy, and information extraction. She received her M. Math from the University of Waterloo, and B.Sc and PhD degrees from the University of Toronto, all in Computer Science. She has worked at IBM Global Services, in the Autonomic Computing Group at the IBM Toronto Lab, and in the Data Management, Exploration and Mining Group at Microsoft Research. Tom Coleman – Professor, Combinatorics and Optimization, University of Waterloo; Director, Waterloo Research Institute in Insurance, Securities and Quantitative Finance Professor Thomas F. Coleman holds the Ophelia Lazaridis University Research Chair at the University of Waterloo. The focus of this chair is on the design of efficient optimization methodologies targeted to a variety of scientific and industrial applications. In addition, Coleman is the director of WATRISQ, an institute comprised of quantitative and computational finance researchers – over 40 faculty members and their associated graduate students – spanning several Faculties at the University of Waterloo. From 2005 to 2010 Coleman served as the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. He was one of the two founding deans of the UW campus in the UAE. Prior to 2005 Coleman was a professor of computer science at Cornell University; he was a faculty member in the Computer Science Department at Cornell University for 24 years, 1981-2005. In the period 1998-2005 he was also the director of the Cornell Theory Center (CTC – a supercomputer applications center). Coleman founded and directed CTC-Manhattan, a computational finance academicindustry-government venture located at 55 Broad Street in New York. Coleman is the author of two books on computational mathematics, the editor of six proceedings, and has published over seventy journal articles in the areas of optimization, applications, automatic differentiation, parallel computing, and computational finance. Coleman is currently on the editorial board of several professional journals. Coleman had developed, with colleagues, both freely-available and commercial software for optimization use and application. Benjamin Alarie – Associate Dean and Associate Professor, University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, Project Leader, Blue J. Legal, Using IBM’s Watson to Master Canadian and International Tax Law Benjamin Alarie, M.A. (Toronto), J.D. (Toronto), LL.M. (Yale), is a professor and Associate Dean, First Year Program at the Faculty of Law of the University of Toronto. He researches and teaches principally in taxation law and judicial decision-making. Before joining the Faculty in 2004, Professor Alarie was a law clerk for Madam Justice Louise Arbour at the Supreme Court of Canada. Professor Alarie convenes the James Hausman Tax Law and Policy Workshop at the law school and recently completed a three year term as President of the Canadian Law and Economics Association. His publications have appeared in numerous academic journals, including the American Business Law Journal, the British Tax Review, the Canadian Business Law Journal, the Canadian Tax Journal, the Osgoode Hall Law Journal and the University of Toronto Law Journal. His research has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. He is coauthor of several editions of Canadian Income Tax Law (LexisNexis) and was awarded the Alan Mewett QC Prize for Excellence by the JD class of 2009. In 2012, Professor Alarie led the faculty’s adoption of a new JD grading system, in which the law school community decided to replace its legacy grading system with a modified honours-pass-fail system (student reception of the change). In 2013, as co-chair of the JD admissions committee, he led reforms to the JD admissions process to make the system more sensitive to differences in the quality of applicant prepration for the study of law and to be more proactively inclusive of students with varied personal experiences (student reception of the change and other coverage). In 2014, as co-chair of the law school’s curriculum committee, he helped lead a successful effort to transform the first year of the JD program. As Associate Dean, First Year Program, Professor Alarie is overseeing the implementation of the new first year curriculum in the 2014-2015 academic year (details). Page 10 Paul Howarth – Senior Manager, Cisco Investments, Cisco Paul joined Cisco in 2004 and has held various roles in Sales, Partner Operations, R&D and Innovation. In these roles he was part of the key product launches in IP Communications, Collaboration and Data Centre. Prior to joining Cisco Paul operated a managed services business focusing on SMB customers, and spent 16 years with Bell Canada in Operations, Customer Service and Sales. In his current role Paul is part of Cisco’s Corporate Investment team focused on Canadian investment opportunities and helping to grow an ecosystem of enterprise and industrial internet startups. Before joining Cisco’s Corporate Investment team Paul was Canada’s R&D and Innovation Development Manager responsible for increasing Cisco’s relevance to Canadians, and Canada’s relevance to Cisco, through R&D and Innovation partnerships with Governments, Universities and the Private Sector. 1QBit – Andrew Fursman, CEO Andrew is the CEO and Co-founder of 1QB Information Technologies (1QBit), the world’s first software company dedicated to producing applications for commercial quantum computers. Andrew studied Economics at the University of Waterloo and Philosophy and Political Science at the University of British Columbia prior to completing post-graduate programs in Technology Studies at Singularity University and Financial Engineering at Stanford University. Andrew was a founding partner at Vancouver-based VCC firm Minor Capital, co-founder of Satellogic Nano-Satellites, and co-founder of Cloudtel Communications. Borrowell – Andrew Graham, Founder and CEO Andrew is co-founder and CEO of Borrowell, a Canadian marketplace lending platform serving consumers with good credit scores. He leads a dynamic team dedicated to bringing better rates and service to borrowers as well as attractive returns to investors. Before founding Borrowell, Andrew led the insurance business at PC Financial. During his tenure, the business saw record growth and became a leader in online sales. He has also held roles in corporate strategy and mergers and acquisitions. He graduated with an MA from the University of Edinburgh and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Eidosearch – Steven Zhang, Co-Founder and CEO Steven is an internationally renowned expert in information processing technologies. He is also a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Finance, Ryerson University. He is the Founding Director of Communication and Signal Processing Applications Laboratory (CASPAL), and has served as Program Director of Graduate Studies, Ryerson University. Steven is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE Signal Processing letters and Journal of Multimedia. Steven received a B.S. and Ph.D. in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University, and holds an MBA (with Honors) in Finance, Economics and Entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His expertise is in the areas of signal processing, multimedia content analysis, computational intelligence and pattern classification, and applications in bioinformatics, finance, and marketing. He holds several US patents and has published extensively in top academic journals. He has working experiences in both high-tech industry in Silicon Valley and hedge fund industry in New York. He frequently consults for biotech companies and investment firms. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, Canada, a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. He is the general chair for MMSP’15, the publicity co-chair for ICME’06 and program co-chair for ICIC’05 and ICIC’10. He served as guest editor for Multimedia Tools and Applications, and the International Journal of Semantic Computing. He is a tutorial speaker in many international conferences such as ACMMM2011, ISCAS2013, ICIP2013 and ICASSP2014. Page 11 Biographies Tulip Retail – Marlon Rodrigues, Head of Marketing Marlon is Head of Marketing at Tulip Retail, where he works with retailers and partners to define the store experience of the future.
