Clay tiles, for example, were originally introduced by a group of Arabian craftsmen who later taught Indian craftsmen how to make them. This method of making clay tiles for roof production quickly spread to Burma and other northern regions of Thailand. The Lanna people later adapted the tile size and shape to better suit the local materials available, ultimately giving birth to ‘‘earthenware”, which is still greatly used today. The Lanna architectural style that incorporates Colonial design, which was brought in by British timber sellers looking to do some forestry business in the north, is aptly called ‘‘Colonial Lanna’’. However, if a mixture of architectural design is drawn from any of the ethnic groups separately, the style is then named after it, such as ‘‘Tai Yong Lanna’’. The old architectural style was slightly redesigned to produce a ‘‘Lanna Contemporary’’ design, which proposes a sense of Lanna qualities but focuses more on space, form and of the times that change over time. The upper north regions of Thailand including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Prae, Payao and Uttraradit possess a prominent identity that is visible in its lifestyle, hospitality, food, dress, architectural design, rich history and cultures. For more than a century the trade relations between the Lanna people and foreigners created an opportunity to relay and introduce a unique culture and architectural style. This diverse and changing culture was originally derived from southern China who later teamed up with other craftsmen from Arabia, Sri Lanka, India and Persia, then passed through Malamang (Burma) before finally ending up in the Lanna region. Over the decades the Lanna people have applied several art elements to combine well with the customs and cultures of each era perfectly, which has now become its own and unmistakable identity. Introduction Although a few of the hotels highlighted in this book have been renovated from the original structures, they still manage to preserve the true concept of Lanna design, while the remaining hotels are relatively new structures built to look like the authentic and ancient ‘‘Lanna’’ or ‘‘Colonial Lanna’’ style buildings. The definition of a small hotel is an accommodation that comprises of no more than 80 rooms. The editorial team have put together a collection of small hotel profiles in the three most northern provinces – Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son. Since the topography of the North is mostly elevated, hilly and amongst forests and streams, every hotel in the region is designed to withhold a sense of nature by using materials that blend harmonisingly with the picturesque locale. All hotel designs express the local northern identity through its decor such as art pieces, Lanna handcrafts, wood furniture, basketry and products made from woven cotton fabrics. The architectural theme runs like a thread throughout the whole property, completing and harmonizing the experience of cuisine, design and hospitality. There is a wonderfully timeless quality to Rachamankha. Its sense of an ancient era was fully intended by the architect, who did not want to create something new, but instead explore the classic designs of Lanna temples and ancient Chinese residences. And all of these elements are enhanced by the extensive use of Asian antiques and object d’art. Rachamankha is a small boutique hotel with just 25 rooms set around two enclosed courtyards. The colonnaded walkways and the central ‘‘sala’’ (pavilion) give the guestroom courtyards an ecclesiastical air. In the research stage of the project the architect, Ong-ard Satrabhandu, visited and studied many old Lanna temples, during which he came across an old ‘‘wiharn’’ (prayer hall) that was marked for demolition. Immediately recognizing the importance and rarity of the structure, he bought the entire property. The ancient structure became the central sala – a quiet and atmospheric space that acts as a private lounge for hotel guests – and it was rebuilt to its original form; all of the timber, columns and even the rich, red finish are original. 15 A3 I 26 Type: Boutique Resort Style: Contemporary Lanna Room type: 45 Rooms; 25 Standard Rooms, 17 Deluxe Rooms, 2 Tamarind Suites, 1 Spa Suite Room rate: 4,200 to 12,600 THB Facilities: Restaurant/ Car Rental/ Babysitting Service/ Boutique/ Pool & Spa Architect: Ong-ard Satrabhandu Tamarind Village โรงแรมแทมมารีนวิลเลจ เชียงใหม 27 28 The pool is set in the courtyard, an area that is filled with tropical plants and flowers and surrounded by comfortable recliners with parasols. All Tamarind Village rooms exude a rustic ambiance with a casual yet simple elegance. Each room is decorated in a fresh contemporary style that draws on the rich traditions of Northern Thailand’s tribal people, as well as Chiang Mai’s vibrant design community from the runners to the throw rugs and accessories. Tamarind Village is a unique and charming boutique property nestled in the heart of historic Chiang Mai. Surrounded by ancient temples and quaint shopping streets, this resort takes its name from the magnificent 200-year-old tamarind tree that shelters the hotel in a shady embrace. Set around a series of garden courtyards, the 45 rooms reflect the rich ethnic diversity of Northern Thailand using fabrics and patterns drawn from the various tribes of the region. 29 A7 I 50 Type: Boutique Hotel Style: Colonial House Room type: 8 Rooms Room rate: 3,500 THB Facilities: Pool/ Restaurant/ Gallery/ Internet/ Library Architect: Tri Yaan Na Ros Architects Office โรงแรมตรีญาณรส โคโลเนียล เฮาส Tri Yaan Na Ros Colonial House 51 52 Each unit is designed to be a two-storey twin house with the typical structure found in Chinese commercial homes. Each unit also features architectural designs from various other cultures like the arch doors from the West, accordion doors from the East, molded lime ornamentations from China mixed with Western-style patterns, and Thai Yuan molding techniques. There are 8 rooms in total, each decorated with colonial style furnishing, a four poster bed with canopy, dressing table and old Thai style closet. Other decorative items include authentic patterns and shapes used to dress ancient pots, Chinese porcelain flower pots, silverware and lacquer ware which are displayed in an antique cabinet. Chiang Mai has long been a favorite holiday destination for millions of visitors from China, India and Burma. Due to the rich cultural interrelation, the architecture and outdoor design of Tri Yaan Na Ros Colonial House reflect the proud and deep history of Chiang Mai, and as a result, the establishment was presented the ‘‘Best Conserved Structure Award 2004’’ by the Lanna Architect Association and Chiang Mai municipality. The building’s unmistakable character combines influences from Chinese architecture, native Lanna lifestyle and Continental architecture. The chambers also portray the strong influence of traveling missionaries, Chinese customs and Lanna culture, which can be seen in the teak furniture and grand decorations. 53 A8 I 58 Type: Boutique Hotel Style: Contemporary Lanna Room type: 29 rooms; 20 Deluxe Rooms, 8 Junior Suites, 1 Manathai Suite Room rate: 3,800 to 4,400 THB Facilities: Pool & Spa/ Pool Bar/ Fitness Room/ Restaurant/ Babysitting Service Architect: David Paul Shrubsole โรงแรมมานะไทย วิลเลจ Manathai Village 59 A12 I 80 Type: Hotel Style: Modern Contemporary Room type: 13 Deluxe Rooms Room rate: 2,800 THB Facilities: Pool/ Coffee Shop/ Massage Architect: Sukanya Chotisukan เกตะวา สไตลิช โฮเต็ล Ketawa Stylish Hotel 81
