"The bridge presents itself
from here in all its beauty,
perhaps more beautiful than
any other bridge in the world.
Through the arches one can
see the Neckar as it flows
towards the rolling plains
of the Rhine."

Heidelberg
There is a magic inherent in Heidelberg which draws millions of people
from around the world into its irresistable spell.
The beauty of the location and the architecture of the city speak for
themselves: the mysterious castle ruins and the picturesque old town
nestled among the wooded slopes of the Oden Forest, through which
the river Neckar wends its way to the plains of the Rhine valley:
it was this that also lured the German romanticists of the 19th century
to Heidelberg where they immortalized the city in their poetry, music
and painting.

Today, the charm of Heidelberg’s Old Town is coupled with the most
modern scientific pursuits. Over 30,000 students study at Germany’s
oldest university, founded in 1386 and meanwhile one of 11 universities
of excellence in the country. These young people from all over the world
give the city ist youthful, cosmopolitan and international flair along
with the 12 million people who visit Heidelberg annually.
In 1797, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spoke of Heidelberg as being
"something ideal", Mark Twain wrote in the 19th century of the "utmost
beauty possible." And in the 21st century, the young author Sasa Stanisic
waxed: "Only cities where olives are grown can dry so beautifully after
the rains as in Heidelberg."

Dear guests,
Heidelberg is one of the top destinations when it comes to superior medical care in Germany.
Over 600 years of medical education and research at the oldest university in Germany
garantee that. Heidelberg’s eminent international reputation in the field of medical research
is further enhanced through cooperative work with outstanding research institutions such
as the German Cancer Research Center, the Center for Molecular Biology Heidelberg, the
Max Planck Institut for Medical Research and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.
More than 10,000 highly dedicated employees in over 40 clinics and departments are responsible for making the University Clinic Heidelberg not only one of the largest but also
one of the most successful university clinics in Germany. Together with the Medical Faculty
of Heidelberg University, it has also become an international drawcard. The Medical faculty
of the University of Heidelberg is not only the oldest faculty in Germany, it is ranked amongst
the best in the world – one of the reasons that Heidelberg University was nominated as one
of the eleven Elite Universities in Germany.
The city of Heidelberg itself offers the best possible environment for patients and their
relatives. Located where the Neckar flows into the Rhine valley, surrounded by the green
hills of the Oden Forest, the historic baroque backdrop of the Old Town throned by the
majestic castle, the youthful cosmopolitan flair of the romantic student town – all contribute towards making a visit to Heidelberg as pleasant and comfortable as possible for all
involved.
This brochure is designed to give you a brief overview of the fields of expertise in patient
care at the University Clinic, recommend hotels which specialize in accommodating the
families of patients, and provide information as to what Heidelberg has to offer during
your stay here.
The Service Team of the Heidelberg Marketing GmbH is here for you. We want to make
your stay as interesting and pleasant as possible, so please contact us and let us help make
your wishes come true.
Welcome to Heidelberg!

Hotel
Bayrischer Hof
S
The hotel in the heart of Heidelberg combines tradition
with modern amenities and is the ideal place for an
unforgettable visit to the gorgeous University, which is
Germany's oldest. The hotel is located in the city center,
making it the perfect base for visiting Heidelberg and
its unique landmarks. The Bayrischer Hof, founded in
1856 and one of the oldest buildings in the vicinity of
the Bismarckplatz, was renovated in 2008. The hotel
offers all the modern comforts and facilities. In April
2014, eight newly renovated luxury apartments located
about five walking minutes from the hotel were acquired
to extend hotel capacity. Since 2016 we offer another
apartment nearby our hotel.
"Dear Guests and all those who are considering visiting us in the near future.
Somebody once told me that time is a like predator stalking us for the duration of our lives. I prefer to think of it as a companion on our travels, reminding
us to enjoy every moment, because this moment is all we have. What we leave
behind is not all that important, but what we've seen and experienced is what
counts. I wish you a pleasant stay at the Bayrischer Hof and a speedy recovery."

NH
Heidelberg
The NH Heidelberg is located in the peaceful suburb of Bergheim,
only a few minutes from the Old Town, the Castle and the historic
university. You can take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the
Neckar river just around the corner from the hotel. We have 174
rooms which are housed both in the new wing and the historic
section of the former Heidelberg Brewery building. Some of the
rooms retain a classical look while others have been furnished in a
more modern style. It is rumored that the spirit of the old master
brewer, Friedrich Kleinlein, lingers in the lobby, but we can not
promise that you will meet him. However, we do promise that you
will be able to relax body and soul in our fitness studio and spa
area. Flooded with daylight, our 600 m² lobby is a great place to
sit back and enjoy our free WiFi or simply celebrate the day.
"The NH Heidelberg is a blend of the historic charm of an old
German brewery and the modern comforts of an NH hotel. Our
guests love our generous breakfast, the proximity to the sights
and the shops in the Old Town, and they especially love our first
class service. Our friendly and capable staff put your comfort and
well-being as their top priority. That is the philosophy of the NH
Hotel Group in all of the over 380 hotels world-wide."

Special Activity Programs
Botanical Garden Heidelberg
The Botanical Gardens of the University of Heidelberg, one of the
oldest in Germany, were originally established in 1593 as a "hortus
medicus" for the cultivation of medical herbs. Nowadays, this institution is important for its contribution to botanical studies. The
greenhouses contain unique plant collections (e.g. Old and New
World succulents and orchids). Walking along the outdoor sections, visitors can enjoy the fascinating vegetation of the raised
bog, heath bog, alpine garden, weedy vineyard as well as a "systematic section".
Experience Heidelberg with its triad of the Castle, the river and the
Old Town in a unique way. Take a boat ride, a guided tour of the
town, a shopping tour, or a trip on a Segway. We have compiled
a number of exciting and interesting offers for you to make your
stay as pleasant as possible.
Of course we can combine our special activity programs with overnight hotel stays as complete packages for you. We are here to help
make your wishes come true!
Please contact us – we would be delighted to talk with you in person.
Experiences
Zoo Heidelberg
Find the red panda hidden in the branches or watch our elephant
males taking a dip - there is a lot to see in our zoo: Majestic lions,
elegant tigers or our "cuddly" brown bears, comical meerkats,
ancient giant tortoises (a century of lifetime experiences in every
shell!), our gorilla family or the cool chimpanzee gang - just a
sample of our wide variety of fascinating animals.
Shopping
Heidelberg’s famous shopping mile takes you through the middle
of the Old Town: Over one kilometer in length, the main street is
one of the longest pedestrian malls in Germany and full of temptations at every turn – from individual owner-operator shops and
department stores with a wide product range to branch stores of
international labels.
But also in the little side-streets peeling off the pedestrian mall
and in the suburbs of Heidelberg there are surprises waiting on
every corner: here you will find antiquarian bookshops, galleries,
young boutiques and quaint little shops.

Taking a boat tour through the narrow Neckar valley, with its hillsides full of vineyards and deciduous forests, is quite an experience.
It is also possible to book tours in combination with guided tours
through the Old Town or the monastery.

enthusiasts to get to know its many faces.

Special Exhibition: "Reiselust" (wanderlust) in the Kurpfälzisches Museum.
Travel is not a modern phenomenon. We have always been mobile, even though the destinations and
reasons for travel have changed over time. The exhibition at the Kurpfälzisches Museum presents a
multitude of objects and documents which bear witness to the love of travel throughout the centuries
– pilgrim badges, luggage, souvenirs, postcards and advertizing posters.

classical music: Heidelberger Frühling (Heidelberg Spring) celebrates its 20th season in 2016 with
roughly 120 events. Every year the festival envelops the romantic German city in a four-week musical

33rd Heidelberger Stückemarkt (Play Market) – host country Belgium
A marathon week of contemporary theater in Spring – that’s the Heidelberger Stückemarkt. This year
the famous festival once again presents new theater pieces and their authors, groundbreaking esthetic
approaches, talks and discussions with the artists. With a language barrier dividing the land, its colonial history, as well as the multicultural city of Brussels which serves as the capital of the European Union,
Belgium is an exciting place to reflect on Europe’s present and future society.

Heidelberg Castle Illuminations with Firework
Every year the legendary Castle Illuminations capture the imagination of thousands of people – very
few cities offer such magical nights every year in June, July and September. Bengali flares slowly bathe
Heidelberg Castle in a mysterious red firelight, as if the ruins were on fire once again, reminiscent of
the past when, in 1689 and 1693, the troops of the Sun King Louis XIV burnt down the Castle, leaving
behind nothing but the now world-famous ruins. When the "flames" of the glowing Castle slowly die
down, the second part of the spectacle begins – the brilliant fireworks over the Neckar. The Elector
Friedrich V first had the fireworks staged in 1613 in order to provide a fitting welcome for his newlybetrothed wife, Elizabeth Stuart. These fireworks laid the foundation for later festivals of light held in
the night sky over Heidelberg – one of which being its 400th Jubilee in 2013. The banks of the Neckar
and the Philosophers’ Walk around 10 pm are the best locations from which to watch the Castle
Illuminations.

things, spectators can look forward to the popular musical "Kiss Me Kate", the reproduction of the
most beautiful romance in the world "Romeo and Juliet", the children’s play "Freund Till, genannt
Eulenspiegel" (Master Tyll Owlglass). And of course, the Castle courtyard will once again be transformed
into a concert hall under the stars for a series of inspiring concerts.

Heidelberger Bachwoche (Heidelberg Bach Week)
The Heidelberg Bach Week is celebrated every year in the days leading up to the anniversary of Johann
Sebastian Bach’s death. For 29 years, the anniversary has been devoted to a subject which ties Bach’s
works to other areas of music, art or religion. In line with the theme "Bach and the World", interpretations of Bach’s music from Africa, the Far East and South America can be heard this year.
The Bach Week ends with a "nocturnal" organ concert – a particularly stirring moment, when on the
anniversary of Bach’s death, the last tone sounds out shortly after midnight in the Heiliggeistkirche.

Heidelberg Christmas Market
The aroma of roasted almonds, cinnamon and hot chestnuts waft through the winding alleyways of
the Old Town. It is Christmas time in Heidelberg – the Heidelberg Old Town revels in Christmas magic.
The six squares in the Old Town and "Germany’s most beautiful ice-rink" open against the impressive
setting of the Castle, and in the blink of an eye the market fills with the people of Heidelberg as well
as many regional and international guests. The atmosphere is captivating – the stalls nestled idyllically
amongst the historic squares of the Old Town shed a warm glow along one of the longest pedestrian
malls in Europe. The Heidelberg Castle Christmas will cast its spell again this year with a blaze of lights
in the famous Castle’s Garden. For a very special experience, visit the Christmas Market in the "Kloster
Stift Neuburg", which is held on all four Advent weekends at the monastery across the river.
